We love a sex positive, trauma informed, pro-sex work read!
For the non witches, I totally recommend if you have some sexual trauma to work through, are uncomfortable with your own relationship to sex, or don’t know what kind of sex you enjoy. (You can ignore the witch stuff, there’s still a lot of great info in there)
For the witches, a great book to discover and explore the relationship between yourself, others, and the greater universe. So many tarot spreads, affirmations, journaling questions. Totally going to be something I can find myself going back to and referencing a lot.
This is hands-down the best guide to sex magick I have read. Gabriela Herstik has such an engaging writing style, and it's clear that she knows her stuff about the "divine erotic." All of the other sex magick books I have read mainly focused on cishetero relationships, even if they claim not to be. However, this book was genuinely inclusive and full of juicy suggestions. I know a lot about BDSM and while I'm familiar with most of the practices mentioned in Sacred Sex and Kink, I appreciate her including them anyway and encouraging others to explore themselves in that way! I would definitely recommend this book to any witches interested in integrating sex into their magick.
This book is a gem for anyone who knows their way around tarot. Even if you don't, it will be a great guide if you're inclined to the esoteric. As the title suggests, it revolves around sexuality, divine masculine and feminine and figuring out your needs (or what you didn't know about yourself).
It can be a great guide for anyone who's a r*pe survivor, especially if you were in tune with your sexuality, but became afraid after a particular event. It can help you get back to yourself again, and this is part of our life we shouldn't shy away from (we should at least try healing our trauma, be more open to suggestions, or simply explore what it has to offer).
This was a fantastic read. If you are considering working with sex magic or delving deeper to explore your own sacred sexuality, Gabriela does an incredible job of offering you some options, including several opportunities for self-reflection and setting boundaries along the way.
10/10 recommend if you're even remotely interested in sex magic, even if you aren't sure you're ready to fully set down this path just yet. :)
i really did not like this, i fail to see how sex is a "spiritual" practice like that. i feel like effort is being invested badly here, why not go read some philosophy to grow your mind, instead of reading all this ridiculous sex-related astrological mashup, and say that's you being enlightened, not you just following having an obsession/addiction with sex. being nice/ethical should be a religion, not having more sex.
i read this because of the author's podcast (Love, Lust & Magick) , which i also found terrible, and quite triggering. the same values that generated the podcast, which is strictly connected to this book), generated this book. i do not wish to give spoilers about the book, but here is a bit about the podcast:
i’ll start with this: episodes start with “blessed be sluts” - since when is being a “slut” something positive? this is incredibly superficial. very shallow values are presented as something relevant to follow. this interviewer (the author of this book), and people joining this maybe, are looking for more people to validate superficial values for themselves. i feel strongly that it’s better to invest time into reading philosophy, rather than in any of this meta-astrological ridiculousness. i really had to comment on this, i think this is making people care less about the right things, while this is one of those things preaching that you’ll get "good place points" (tv show reference) if you follow it. this is also hypocritical, like that, and in other ways too, for example: while “beauty standards are rooted in capitalism” (ep. 3) and that is something not worth following, all this witch-aesthetic is also a beauty standard/trend, that some can’t let go of or would wish to follow, and they want you to follow it, since these people here in these interviews, including the interviewer, need to be validated and hired (it’s important) as consultants or gurus, or put in charge of a trendy/selling podcast…it’s a lot about selling witchcraft, so some people can make money from it.
now, i don’t think logic and hard work should be trumped by any astrology prediction. here it is, i’m a Scorpio, born on 11.11, and a Snake (chinese zodiac), is that why i succeeded/failed in life? like that, it would just be ridiculous, let’s be honest.
“the word ‘god’ is so triggering to me” (quote to keep) part was another example…if “to me ‘god’ and ‘goddess’ are the same” why be so triggered, spiritually enlightened person? how about this: the word ‘creator’ is neutral, a man or woman can be named as the creator of a painting, for example, so we can use ‘god’ as in ‘the creator’. can this be less “triggering” now? also, has anyone asked god what god would wish to identify as? :) has god showed up in person to speak, or are people still speaking for god, as god-themselves. that is triggering to me, just saying. also, we need to admit, if there is a god, a creator, it’s gonna be the same truth for everyone here, you’re not gonna be able to pick to be part of a reality where the creator looks the way you wish, because you can’t be flexible and accept something you don’t like. this is common, i think, as part of spiritual beliefs where people delude themselves into thinking they get to just live and exist by default, without earning infinity, which would imply effort towards things they might not like or find difficult (like ethics, true lack of selfishness, not craving people’s attention through your clothes…just some examples…”but i dress hot for me” is a popular excuse when you don’t wish to stop, ep 3). back to “the oppressive god” that “we as a society have come to seek the approval of”…well, what’s wrong with that, seeking approval? maybe the fact that you wish to be and do things god the creator would not approve of, and you don’t like that. (un)fortunately you can’t pick the existence, or non-existence (if that sounds more appealing), of god. ask yourself this more: are you sure god would like to give you life forever, based on your thoughts and actions? thoughts and actions matter, because you can hurt others, and yourself, with them. why would you wear a “hot” (hello, and “welcome back sluts”, from the beginning of ep 3) dress out to tempt a random man away from his partner? stop? the “we are here to have a human experience” and “being human is divine” are things people wish were true, to validate toxic desires, let’s debate this more, since “I just want a debate on god”. this life was a test, to get infinity, make sure you don’t fail because you want to have sex with other people’s people and look “hot”, it’s common. grow your brain, learn some ethics and philosophy, go do truly difficult things, because you don’t wish to fail at life.
now, at the end of the episode/interviews, the interviewer tells you where you can pay for more witch services from her and where you can add some ads in the available spots, she needs to make some more cash. “blessed be sluts” - what a beautiful selfless creation, this reality show. more of the hits: “i love a d*ick pic”, “masturbation is a way to get closer to goddess” (are you sure “goddess” would like for people to get closer like that? that’s just your human sex addiction telling you the “divine” wants that from you. how about that? obviously you say you disapprove of buddhism because “your desires are the root of your problems”, what buddhism says, needs to get a “that’s patriarchal”, because you wish to follow your addiction…why would you want to meditate by looking at a d*ck?! this is in ep 2. what kind of person would a person be classified as if they spent 20 min looking at a d*ck and called that religion/ spirituality/ enlightenment…wake up, religion around a male symbol, a d*ck, is a male desire, this is that “patriarchy” that’s being named as wrong by you…oh, and they also mention a book basically named the d*ck’s kiss, which is meant to be a spiritual practice…obviously men want oral sex to be a spiritual practice, and the followers need to feel like heathens if they don’t follow it religiously…this show is not being sarcastic about this, i feel i need to be). in conclusion, let me add this, from ep 1: “witchcraft and magic are, in my opinion, the top ways to not live a boring life” (religion and spirituality advert, sarcasm), why resolve feeling bored, when you can just avoid it by practicing some witch magic. this is, in my opinion, toxic. the book and the podcast are similar, based on the root values.
Sacred Sex: The Magick and Path of the Divine Erotic by Gabriela Herstik is hands down her best book yet, and easily the best book I’ve read on the subject. Herstik masterfully combines history, spirituality, and modern sex magick in a way that’s both inclusive and empowering, creating a guide that is both profound and practical. This is not just a book about sex or magick—it’s a comprehensive guide to embracing sexuality as a sacred path and reclaiming it as a powerful aspect of the spiritual journey.
What truly sets this book apart is the depth of its content. Herstik covers a wide range of mystical traditions like tantra, kundalini, and Kabbalah, while also integrating tarot, rituals, and journaling prompts to deepen the reader’s connection to their own sexual power. The interviews with sex workers and therapists provide real-world perspectives that add richness and nuance, making it feel holistic and well-rounded. Her emphasis on honoring personal boundaries, shedding shame, and finding joy in sacred self-expression makes Sacred Sex a truly transformative read. It’s a groundbreaking, must-have resource for anyone looking to infuse their life with the divine erotic.
I mainly wanted to read this..Well..to be honest, I had the AI read it to me. I wanted to do this because any sexual conversation makes me uncomfortable. Honestly, I would like to be more comfortable but I think the principle of what disturbs me about such talk is when it's not someone I'd consider being with in that way. I love my friends but I don't want to hear it. Plain and simple. Times when friends have talked about it are burned in my brain. Anyway, with this book it still felt like a private conversation the way id prefer. also I liked using the AI reading as a way to make myself clean my room a bit every night
I found this book to be more interesting than most of the "newer" witchcraft books that are out now. It has a lot to explore within it, I came into reading it with a pretty healthy idea and understanding of myself and my sexuality and still found some helpful rituals and practices. The writing is super personal and relaxed, which makes it very easy to read. I think there is value in getting more in touch with your body and your craft. In my reading of it I skipped around A LOT, because I did start to get a tad bored and felt it has a slow start. It's more of a workbook than a sit down and read word for word.
This is the best book I have read about sex magic! I was suggested to this book and I am forever grateful 🖤 This is a great book for beginners, people already following this path, and pros. You learn something new OR learn something to update.
Really great and important book about sex! Non-witches can safely enjoy this one, too. I think if you have a lot of religious trauma... definitely read this one. It'll help. As others have pointed out, it does get a bit repetitive, but still a great read.
This book is DENSE. It is absolutely overflowing with information. This guide is so thorough and inclusive, if you need to know about the path of Sacred Sex I would definitely start here!
I liked this book a lot and I don't think there's any other book out there that's in its same vein. Loved the nuanced approach to sex magic that I've heard sprinkles of in other books and really appreciated a deep dive. The only thing I didn't love was the amount of journal questions and affirmations! I love journal questions, and affirmations, especially in her other books, but I eventually got a bit burnt out by them. Which is strange because I loved her book 'Embody Your Magick' which is a guided journal thats 5/5⭐ in my opinion 😅. Still a must read though!
Focused a bit too much on sex magick/wicthcraft for me - was assuming it had more diverse topics based on the blurb but it just touched on those briefly.
