I loved reading this book. The story kept my interest from beginning to end and I couldn't wait to get to the next page. Nancy Warren is a great writer and I would recommend her all the way. Fun ride, female-mystery, paranormal and cozy mystery. Well written series. I can't wait for the next book.
What happens when a newly turned cranky vampire has a book released posthumously? Why throw him a book launch so he can secretly enjoy the release of course! What could possibly go wrong?? Humor abounds once again as Quinn wrangles vampires, witches and tries to keep all hidden from the normal folk around her wee Irish town which becomes harder to do when you invite a slew of people to town for a book launch of an undead author who is not at all pleased with his undead status nor of the events the unfold during his book celebration! Once again, Quinn finds herself entangled in murder, mayhem and more with a side of books! If you haven't started this series yet, you are definitely missing out! You will love the audio as the stellar narration really brings the book to life!
4.5 Book source ~ Kindle Unlimited Joint Review with Bea from Bea's Book Nook
Plot
AVR: I think this plot is a bit tighter than the first two books. At least, it seems to run along at a quickish pace as Quinn gets down to the business of launching a “dead” author’s last book for him and then trying to figure out who the murderer is. Not of the author. He’s already a vampire. The murder is tied to the book launch though so Quinn, being a curious person, has to stick her witchy nose into the investigation. I admit, I did not have it figured out until the wrap up. So, good job!
Bea: I agree that this story was much tighter. In fact, I feel like Warren hit her stride with this story; I said something similar for the second book and the writing has only improved. It was tight, it was smooth, it flowed, and it was engaging. Quinn's involvement in investigating the murder made sense. It was also interesting to read the behind the scenes details of setting up a book launch. The story has a good mix of mystery, humor, and a little action.
AVR: I agree! I'm looking forward to more in this series.
Characters
AVR: Since this book centered around one of the vampires I didn’t see much of the rest of the villagers or even the vampires except for Lochlan, Bartholomew and Oscar Wilde. Was Oscar Wilde a dick in life? Because he’s a dick as a vampire. I like Karen, the new owner of a B&B. She also owns the shop Granny’s Drawers. And Biddy O’Donnell, the dead witch introduced in the last book has a running part in this story. She’s kinda frightening. But mostly annoying, except in a good way.
Bea: Vampiric Oscar Wilde really is a mean person. I know that real Oscar Wilde had a sharp tongue and vampiric Wilde does not disappoint. Branson, the vampire author getting the book launch, is quite bratty. Quinn had far more patience for him than I did. There weren't as many characters this time round, which was nice, but there were a handful of new ones. While there wasn't much development of the regular characters, all of them, old and new, were sharply drawn and distinct. Biddy is incredibly annoying; she really got on my nerves. I tried to have empathy for her situation but oooh, she made it hard. She is a compelling character though ,and hopefully Warren will make good use of her.
AVR: Oh, yeah. Branson is definitely bratty. Yikes. And Biddy? I would have sent her back to her dirt prison. Quinn is much more patient than I would ever be, family or not.
World building
AVR: The world doesn’t progress overly much in this one. I did learn a lot about how books are published and marketed though – even if it was from the viewpoint of a “dead” author. And it looks like the tiny village of Ballydehag just might be growing some soon so the world can be expanded.
Bea: Like Carol said, there wasn't as much building this time around. I would love to see more focus on the village. So far, it seems to be a stereotypical Irish village. Then again, I know little about real Irish villages. Either way, I'd like to see more use of the setting in the stories. Warren did make use of some public land, conversation land it seemed, and that was nice to read about.
AVR: Oh yeah! I forgot about the mention of the Wild Atlantic Way. That sounds like something I'd like to do if I lost about 80 lbs. Or maybe I could lose that doing it. Hmmm...lol Come to think of it, I'd like to do the Appalachian Trail, too. But that is a whole lot longer and I think a whole lot more mountainous. Eeek
Romance?
AVR: Is there a bit of romance in the air with Quinn and Lochlan? I can see it heading that way. I was actually hoping Dr. Milsom would be the love interest, but he seems to be taking the same path as DI Ian Chisholm in the Vampire Knitting series. Maybe someone else will come along? I’m not really feeling it between the witch and the vampire.
Bea: I vote no. Not every series needs a romance. That said, it would be nice to see a middle-aged woman get a romance, and like Carol, I would prefer to see Quinn with the doctor. They seem a better match. I'd rather see Lachlan and Quinn be friends but not lovers.
AVR: Agreed!
Overall
AVR: Overall I really enjoyed this 3rd installment of the Vampire Book Club. Well, except for the possible stirrings of witch/vampire romance. I want someone else for Quinn. The murder kept me guessing and the rest of the book kept me engaged. This is an easy read that entertains.
Bea: This was my favorite of the series, short though it is. I like this series and I hope we are in for more stories.
AVR: Yes! I hope we get many more stories in this series.
Side Note
AVR: I want to mention how much I dislike the new covers of the books. The original covers fit the character as written so much better. Quinn is supposed to be a dark-haired middle-aged woman. The woman on the new covers don't look like that at all.
Bea: I'm not convinced that it isn't the same model. If not, there's a strong resemblance. She does look younger on this cover, and that's a shame. The main character is middle-aged and the cover model should reflect that. The character's age is part of her experience.
AVR: I don't think they look alike, but the new covers do show an obviously younger person and that's just ugh to me. Actually, I think she looks more like how I picture Karen.
As I said with the first two books in this series, this delivers exactly what you expect it to. Still very similar in execution to Nancy Warren's other series "The Vampire Knitting Club." The mystery portion of this cozy mystery was well thought out and I enjoyed continuing on with the colorful cast of characters we've come to know. I also enjoyed seeing Quinn and Lochlan's budding relationship grow. If the series continues, I'm sure they'll become an item.
This one was actually enjoyable. It was a quick read and the mystery was pretty good. Quinn agrees to hold a book launch party for the new vampire Bart Branson who can’t let go of the fact that he is newly undead. Bart wants to be out there with his adoring “fans” and has a hard time letting go. Quinn has to learn the art of promotion, working with publishers, advertisers, ordering books in bulk, errors, etc. Soon his ex wife shows up and wants to profit of the book launch and a “newly discovered manuscript” when the ex-wife Candace, is found dead, there’s all sorts of suspects, including Bart, a ghost writer, publicist, and more.
Quinn and Lochlan set out to solve the murder. Meanwhile, Quinn is trying to deal with her great, great, great whatever, Biddy..
2020 bk 379: Quinn agrees to hold a book launch party for recently deceased and newly made vampire Bartholomew Branson. Learning to work with publishers, publicists, advertising, bulk book ordering, internet pre-sales and present Quinn with challenges, but the best is yet to come. Bartholomew is incensed when his money-grubbing former wife turns up, and then when a ghost writer appears from America. What's a vampire to do? Somebody else did it for him, when the morning after the launch it is discovered that someone was murdered. Who did it? Why did they do it? and Who benefited? All traditional mystery questions to a paranormal fun mystery read.
This is a terrific series with intriguing characters whose relationships continue to deepen as the mysteries, big and small, drive the plot forward. Since this book delves into the publishing world, I imagined Ms. Warren rather gleefully using her first hand knowledge of the twists in “the story” behind the stories.
Although it was my pleasure to receive this ARC, it was completely my choice to share my honest review.
This series just keeps getting better. I'm loving getting to know the characters more. so much drama in a small irish village, and so much going on that no one knows about! witches vampires , spirits! undead writers. Great fun. I can't wait to see what happens next .
Another fun entry in the author's Vampire Book Club series. I really hope there are more in the series (as well as her other two), but for now it looks like I'm caught up.
A Spelling Mistake is Book 3 in the Vampire Book Club by Nancy Warren.
I really LOVED this book! The mystery was so well written and kept me guessing until the very end!
Bartholomew Branson is a published author that is recently undead and a new vampire. He is feeling down because his last book, A Killer In His Sights, is getting published posthumously and he is upset that he can't take place in any of the excitement that comes with a launch party.
Quinn steps in and plans a launch party at The Blarney Tome bookshop in the village of Ballydehag that Quinn runs. While he can't be present he can watch from a distance.
When Bartholomew's ex wife shows up with a surprising unpublished manuscript, things go bad!
I won't give away any spoilers, but a murder occurs and The Vampire Book Club is on the case.
The characters are well developed complex and interesting. The mystery is so great and I loved the story of a book launch within a book.
Loved the story. New vampire Bartholomew is in a slump and irritating all the other vampires. When our heroine, the bookshop manager, offers to order 200 copies of his latest book, published posthumously, Bartholomew takes the offer and runs with it. Expands it. Makes it an international book launching event. Then his ex-wife shows up, makes an outlandish claim, and is murdered. This was a great who done it with lots of suspects. Very enjoyable read.
Bartholomew Branson, a bestselling crime author is gutted there’ll be no launch party for his 17th and latest novel ‘A Killer in His Sights’.
It’s awfully hard to attend a soirée when you’re dead, and a vampire, but it doesn’t stop him winging about his career ending.
He lives, along with a group of other vampires in a small Irish coastal town, Ballydehag, where witch Quinn runs the local book shop The Blarney Tome, and the weekly vampire book club.
At this particular book club Oscar Wilde likes to remind him of his place, but Bartholomew just calls Oscar an “Irish windbag.”
As a book lover, avid reader and a writer myself, I recognised many of the character traits which have been exaggerated for the purposes of the story, and it's fun to play spot the writer-type.
There’s loads of humour in these books, and though Quinn the witch normally ends up investigating a dead body in the town with sexy vampire Lochlan, it is the banter between the dead geriatrics that makes the books so fun.
Two recently added characters, old witch Biddy, addicted to the Antiques Roadshow and 16th century vampire Thomas Blood, are great comedic relief against the darker moments in the novel, involving murder and greed.
Quinn is gaining confidence in this novel and finding her place in this quirky village.
It's sideways linked to her other series Vampire Knitting Club with Lucy and Rafe, and we sometimes get crossover between characters.
As with the first series, I'm now addicted to this one.
It's full of danger, strange antics, humour and potential romance.
Celebrity thriller author and newbie vampire, Bartholomew Branson, bemoans the fact that his last book, publishing posthumously, leaves him unable to attend the launch and gala. Quinn Callahan offers to feature the book in the front window of The Blarney Tome, her bookshop. Before she knows it, Bart has arranged for the launch of his book to be at her bookshop with his British editor and publisher agreeing to attend. Lochlan Balfour, the seeming leader of the vampires has offered the ballroom at Devil's Keep, the home of the group of vampires. Meanwhile Karen Tate has finally opened O'Donnell Bed & Breakfast just in time for the launch. Candace, the despised ex-wife of Bartholomew turns up with an American literary agent in tow claiming to have an unknown Branson thriller. A grubby American stranger also attends and is ejected from the gala. When the wife is found dead at the B&B with the manuscript gone, Quinn and Lochlan hunts for the killer. Could Bart in a rage have killed her? What about the literary gents or the grubby stranger. Also, why does every television in the new B&B only play Antiques Roadshow? This series is just a joy to read. Quirky with an unique plotline, I can't wait for more of middle-aged American, Quinn Callahan's adventures in tiny Ballydehag, Ireland.
Nancy Warren’s books bring me so much joy! - Especially if you want to escape for a moment and want to give yourself some nice relaxing reading time! Nancy’s books are the ones I really look forward to!
In This 3rd book of the Vampire Book Club series you will find out how well the lovely bookstore keeper Quinn has adjusted already to her new life! Even with some ancient ancestor who isn’t quite ready to move on and who has plans for herself that won’t make Quinn’s and other’s life easy, Quinn will have to rise to the occasion!
The question will be, is the lovely Quinn up to the task and will the help of the handsome alfa vampire called Lochlan Balfour be enough to safe an newly started B&B from going under as a cursed murder place?! Will the true culprit be found in time before bad reviews will make an end to this newly started Inn?
A must read if you want to find out more about this exciting sleuthing adventure Quinn and Lochlan are about to embark on! I surely enjoyed it a lot and couldn’t put this book down for a minute! I can’t wait for the next one!
A true cosy mystery filled with enjoyable in-depth characters, set in a lovely Irish village with a dash of magic, mystery and mayhem ♥️
A Spelling Mistake, Book #3 in The Vampire Book Club, by Nancy Warren.
Once again Warren delivers a great story. Set in Ireland, his series abounds in mythology and gorgeous scenery. In this episode, Quin is hosting a book launch for an author who recently died off the coast line near the small village where Quinn now lives. Of course, the author didn't exactly leave this plane of existence, as he is now one of the undead and a member of the Vampire Book Club. When his ex-wife shows up claiming to be in the possession of a heretofor unknown manuscript written by the supposed dead author, and then turns up dead the next morning, the race is on to identify the murderer. Was it the undead author? Was it one of the literary people who came to the book launch and were staying at the same bed and breakfast as the victim? Who is the real author of he manuscript and where is it? Quin and Lachlan have there hands full trying to solve the mystery while keeping the existence of the undead a secret.
A fun plot that is well paced, we'll edited and proofed. There are lots of twists and turns, making the final reveal of the guilty party a fun surprise. And no cliffhanger ending, making this a near perfect read.
They get better so I hope there are more to come..
Quinn Callahan, witch, is living in Ballydehag in Ireland after getting into deep water with the powers that be. She's settling into her new life running The Blarney Tome bookshop for Lucinda who has been transferred to England by the same powers that be.
Having hidden the fact that her seven, or is it eight, times great grandmother Biddy O'Donnell is freely wandering around the town she's not able to explain to Karen, who's turned the O'Donnell house into a b&b, why her TV sets randomly turn on and always play the Antiques Roadshow but what is more difficult is how she's going to deal with the events arising from Bartholomew's book launch.. especially when his ex-wife appears and claims to have an unseen manuscript to release posthumously that Quinn knows he didn't write.
When she's murdered in the b&b and the manuscript disappears Quinn's in a race to discover the truth before everything is blown open as Bartholomew rages, the ghostwriter runs away and there's dissention amongst his old team..
Disappointed that there isn't another book to follow this one.
A Spelling Mistake by Nancy Warren -- worth the read!
This is the third installment in Ms. Warren’s Vampire Book Club series and she doesn’t disappoint. Quinn Callahan, a middle age witch that has been sent to a small town, Ballydehag, in Ireland due to a witchy no-no for use of magic (see the first novel for details) is settling in to running the local book store that comes with a book club that happen to be vampires. One of those vampires is the recently undead thriller/spy novelist, Bartholomew Branson. Bartholomew’s last book is to be released and Quinn hosts a book launch event.
Cue the distraught widow of Bartholomew arriving to the event to turn things up side down. A new local B&B is the center of a murder and a haunting of TVs that are obsessed with Antiques Road Show.
Can Quinn help solve the death before the wrong person is charged with the crimes? Take a read and find out.
Ms. Warren’s books are a delight to read, no bad language or gore and refreshing that it is telling a story with a touch of romance. Heavy handed in charm. Well worth the read.
''I glanced at him. 'You’re going to a lot of trouble for ten euros.' 'I always find it isn’t the amount wagered that’s interesting, it’s the bet itself.'"
Quinn Callahan, owner of the Blarney Tome, has taken on vampires, witches, familiars and everyday folk, but can she deal with egos as the recently turned author Bartholomew Branson's last novel, posthumously published, will make it's debut in the tiny village of Ballydehag.
Infighting publishers, agents and family all square off in this fun take on "Author author, just who is the author!" In this, the third in the series, Nancy Warren again proves her ability to be a master storyteller. Whether it's contemporary romance or paranormal cosy mysteries, Warren spins a tale with complex characters and un-putdownable puzzles that keep the readers' interest and clamoring for more . Highly recommended 5/5
[disclaimer: I received this book from the author and chose to read and review it]
What you have here is a dead author (now a vampire) who is part of the Vampire Book Club and who has his final book coming out which, unfortunately, has a rather embarrassing mistake on its paper cover.
His greedy ex-wife shows up at the party thrown in his honor claiming to have an unpublished manuscript of his.
Meanwhile Karen plans to open a B&B which will host the party. A somewhat disheveled American shows up (the party is in England) and gets kicked out of the party.
Then there's another murder, there's a thief stealing non-book things and so it's up to Quinn and the vampires to find out who the killer is, where the missing manuscript is, who the thief is and get all of this done before the people in the party are allowed to return to their homes.
I especially liked the ending to this one and the fact that Quinn was able to sell every copy of the book she had pre-ordered.
A Spelling Mistake is the third book in the spin-off series Vampire Book Club by Nancy Warren. I had really thought that I could not like as series more than the Vampire Knitting Club but as this series continues with A Spelling Mistake This is becoming my new favorite. I have come to identity with the newly County Cork resident Quinn Callahan. No matter how much she tries to keep a low profile, she is always in the mist of things.
This whodunit involves the undead but also the not dead. Writers, readers, a turn of phrase, and humor galore, maybe even a hint at romance, too. No explicit violence or gore or bad language to be found in this cozy paranormal mystery. This is good, good escape reading from beginning to end.
The publisher/author gave me a complimentary ARC of the book which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
A Spelling Mistake is the third book in the delightful Vampire Book Club series but it is also a perfect stand-alone. Witch Quinn Callahan reluctantly agrees to host a posthumous book launch for recently turned Vampire and author Bartholomew Branson. Little did she know that it would lead to murder. This cozy mystery is packed full of colourful and interesting characters which include witches, vampires, familiars and a resurrected witch who was hung and buried over 300 years ago. I definitely recommend that the previous books in this series are read first to truly appreciate these fabulous characters but it is not necessary to enjoy this book. I thoroughly enjoyed it and definitely recommend it to all paranormal and cozy mystery fans.
A Spelling Mistake by Nancy Warren The Vampire Book Club Series Book Three Quinn Callahan has let herself get sucked into something big. A launch party for Bartholomew Branson's new book, one that he'd written before he became one of the undead. The author was so down about missing out on the launch...she felt bad for him.
Of course, nothing works out as easy as it should. Oh, the launch was met with great enthusiasm from fans, his former agent and publisher. And it was helping Karen out with her newly opened B&B. But, a few unexpected guests and a murder complicate things for Quinn.
I found this series thru Seasoned Magic: A paranormal Women's Fiction Anthology. The .5 book for this series was in it and I was hooked. Not only are there little stories going on in each book with relationships that are made in Ireland but there is the big who mystery that I have found a little more difficult to figure out than cozy mysteries. I applaud the author for this. I hope this is not the last book in the series as these were page turners and I found myself reading way to late on week nights and weekends. I just couldn't stop on a chapter at an appropriate time because something good was happening on each chapter leading me to keep reading. I am so impressed I am going to read other series by this author.
Set in a beautiful Ireland (not been myself but the description is making me want to go!), with a growing group of people - witches, vampires.....murder! Our heroine is a witch, not young but still in her prime.....thinks outside the box. As with Nancy's other books, we grow to know the characters and make our own opinions. This book has another murder, who did it...? Form your opinion then you will be going fishing with the red herrings! Great book again in this series. as usual, Nancy grabs your attention and I couldn't put it down, even trying to make it last..... the murder was done by someone I thought might have done it, then no.....and crikey it was!
When Quinn decides to help her vampire friend things turn into a real nightmare. Bartholomew Branson learns that his last book before his demise, and being turned into a vampire, is being released he becomes depressed that he can not be part of the book launch. So Quinn decides to contact the publisher and see if they would be willing to have the book launch at her small Irish book store. When they respond that they would be delighted everything seems to be wonderful. Until his ex wife show up and announces she has a new unpublished manuscript. Then she is found dead. Who would have wanted her gone?
