CSB Harmony of the Gospels is a synchronized reading of the Gospels based on the work of John A. Broadus and A.T. Robertson with each Gospel writer's account of events side-by-side. In addition to the harmonious layout, articles and commentary notes are included to provide deeper understanding of the four Gospels and the harmonized account of the life and teachings of Jesus.
CSB Harmony of the Gospels features the highly readable, highly reliable text of the Christian Standard Bible® (CSB). The CSB captures the Bible’s original meaning without sacrificing clarity, making it easier to engage with Scripture’s life-transforming message and to share it with others.
This edition was a great opportunity for Holman, but it was poorly executed. The title itself is a misnomer, as this is really a "Synopsis" of the Gospels rather than a "Harmony." I knew this going into it, and I picked it up specifically because I knew it was really a synopsis, which is of greater academic value than a harmony.
This edition has a variety of articles by different authors. Most of those articles are fantastic; a few of them were not so great and included fallacious arguments. Many of them also included basic spelling errors. The editors of the volume consistently presented the Matthean priority view (a minority view). I will admit that they had some interesting arguments, but I remain unconvinced.
The biggest weakness of this edition is the study notes on the synopsis itself. The study notes themselves remain largely unrevised from an older edition based on the HCSB. I figured that the purpose of the study notes would be to assist with comparative synoptic studies, yet rarely ever did these study notes provide insight into the emphases, differences, and similarities of the four gospel writers.
Despite this, it was still nice to have the pericopes of the gospels in parallel synoptic format. The formatting is not as clear as in Aland's edition, but Aland's edition is also not as widely available as this one.
