Six months ago, Stacey kicked her lying husband out of their bed. They made promises to each other. Promises that didn’t include lonely nights and lonelier days missing the man who slept on the couch. Something had to give. She knew that as sure as she knew her former client’s death was murder. Wray’s nights under the same roof as his wife and sons were numbered. Every time he left, he wondered if she’d change the locks while he was at the fire station. He couldn’t change the past, but he hoped they still had a shot at a future. Until she tells him it’s over. Making a rash decision when she’s emotional is a bad idea, but Stacey never expects it will put her family at risk. Keeping Wray home is the best way to protect their sons, even though he threatens her heart. As for the man who threatens her life, he’ll get exactly what he deserves.
USA TODAY Bestselling Author Mary E Thompson spent most of her childhood wishing she had a few less curves. She hid in the pages of books because her favorite characters never cared what size her clothes were. Now, neither does Mary, and she writes stories that celebrate women like her. Real women who have curves, chase dreams, and find love, because we should all be happy, no matter our dress size. Mary spends her non-writing time with her husband and two kids, watching too much TV, cheering for her hometown football team (Go Bills!), and hiding chocolate from her family.
Stacey is dealing with a lot - two little boys, a marriage on the rocks and constant concern for her charges at the shelter where she works. When one of her ex-clients is killed, she is determined to prove the woman's husband did it. The cops are useless, merely giving lip service to her. Evidence needed, warrant, lawsuit avoidance, blah blah blah.
Stacey's husband Wray just wants his family back, estranged due to a huge error in judgment on his part. He screwed up BAD. Her late-night activities lead him to think she's having an affair. Thankfully wrong, but probably more welcome than what she was really doing.
A great story overall but Stacey did a LOT of things a responsible parent wouldn't do. Admirable but crazy. I was on pins and needles to see what she'd get herself into next. The ending nearly broke my heart as a child's illusions were shattered. Sets up the next story in the series. Damon and his mole in the NFPD are going down!
I have read quite a few of this authors books now, I generally just rate the books I read but every once in a while I get a thorn in my paw lol. I genuinely enjoy her stories but some aspects of the plots have me questioning human behaviour. So with this book loved the characters (we have met them has secondary' in F.BOMB series) the plot was solid for the most part but the responses of the characters in some instances was a little baffling, e.g. Coming across criminal activity and not involving the authorities asap they go to the trouble of recording the incident but then take the time to get back to their car and drive back across town to the police station. It's hard to believe someone who has a little knowledge of how the system works due to the job they have and the people they are surrounded with that they would dilly dally, but my biggest sticking point was the fact that a civilian would put themselves in danger tracking a criminal by way of a phone then going into a building to confront the bad guy with zero skills. When they could of just placed a call to report suspicious activity when the police are already looking for said criminal and could of used this information to go pick them up. There a few niggles like this one throughout some of this author's books though, like I said I enjoy the stories just some bits are a little too unbelievable for me but at the end of the day we read to escape and these stories are fiction not fact, fingers crossed that there are more good than bad points for the rest of this series rant over lol happy reading peeps.
I wanted to like it, but the characters were really frustrating. She wears a mask (come on!) while investigating killers, alone, with no experience, even after they threaten her husband and kids? The same character who spent months being mad at her husband for doing something stupid and putting his family in danger? That doesn’t make sense. Then there was clear exposition that Vera was told by the police about an event, but then the main character went and told her the same thing, and the news was a surprise to Vera. Sloppy writing and editing. I also thought the husband should have received an apology from her after she did essentially the same thing she was going to break up their marriage over. A frustrating read with unbelievable characters.
Stacey and Wray have been happily married for years but after Wray gets in over his head with a gambling debt they find themselves sleeping in separate beds and questioning the strength of their marriage. After one of her clients is found dead Stacey is determined to prove that the abusive husband is at fault. As she searches for the truth she gets a glimpse of the real danger she’s inserted herself in and turns to Wray for support. The emotional distance between Stacey and Wray is heartbreaking, but watching them reconnect and learn to trust each other again is beautiful, and hot. There is something extraordinary and intimate about a married couple rekindling their romance and passion.
wasn't sure what to expect, but this was page turner, Stacey and Wray are having martial problems trust being one. but when one of her clients is killed, Stacey will do everything in her power to get the man she believes who murdered her client to pay. unfortunately it puts her and her family in harms way, it does bring her and husband closer, but she may not be alive to rejoice in that.
loved it. . I received a free copy of this book am voluntarily leaving a review.
This was an okay read but there is a lot of previous history behind the break up that is alluded to. If the author had started with what happened earlier, it would have been better. Then the reader would have known the extent of their problems. Stacey was too reckless with no real suspense or consequences. And although she seemed to be back with her husband it ended with a cliffhanger! Sorry but it wasn’t good enough to want to read book 2.
A book based on a counselor for domestic violence victims. Stacy and her partner are partners in running the shelter and DV Shelter. Both of their partners are city service men who work for the police dept. And fire dept. There is suspense and confusion with Staff's home life as she has taken a victim u see her wing before she is killed by her husband leaving her teen daughter to live with her father, the man who killed her mother, HOLLY.
An enjoyable first book. This is a new author for me and I enjoyed this book. The story is full of drama, action, suspense and it will keep you interested to see what will happen next with Stacy and Wray. Their journey is a roller coaster ride of emotions. I am looking forward to read the next book.
Wow! I enjoyed reading this book. Full of mystery, action, suspense and danger. Staceys marriage is falling apart because of her husband's lies and financial problems. But her job as a domestic abuse counselor is really keeping her busy and putting her life in danger. Definitely would recommend reading this book. I was given an advanced reader copy and I voluntarily leave this review.
A well written perfectly paced story pulling you in from the start. I am falling in love with this series even with this being the first in the series. It is a standalone read with plenty of action to keep your interest. This was about Stacey and the struggles with life. A murder she tries to solve which gets her in danger so you can't put it down.
The couple are having marital problems, and the wife is chasing a murderer, so lots of suspense. I enjoyed this story, and felt sympathy for the marriage problems. I recommend this book to readers of romance stories.
I Liked the romance in the book. I Loved that Wray was still in love with his wife and he stilled protected her and their sons. And I am glad that Stacy gave Wray a second chance and they became a family again. I liked the suspense in the book too. I liked the book.
ngl, i couldn't finish this, i just felt really tired while reading. i understand the way she felt but i felt bad for them and the kids, idk, i couldn't finish it.
Really enjoyed the action in this story. Stacey and Wray are going through a very rough patch in their lives. She's a mama bear that will do anything for her family.
Had a great story with a little spice. Exactly the short story I wanted to get into after a book hangover. I will definitely check out the other books in this series.
