There is a secret counterterrorism unit for the Italian government known only as "The Social Welfare Agency." Its mission: to rescue troubled girls and turn them into heartless cyborg assassins using the latest advances in cyber-technology. The newest inductee into the Agency is a second generation cyborg called Petrushka, who may just be the Agency's most powerful operative yet. Petrushka is given an impossible trial-by-fire mission, together with her handler Alessandro, to foil an assassination attempt. Can she prove she's got what it takes in an impossible mission she may not even survive?
This volume has Petra and Alessandro as the cover and I know this will be focusing on them. And I really enjoyed it a lot! In this volume, it raised the question of the cyborgs' 'love' for their handler. It's a fact that their love stems from their loyalty to their handler and their loyalty is due to their conditioning. So a lot of people determined that their love was 'planted' on them. Not a real emotion, but a forced one.
In this volume though, Petra just proved that her love for Alessandro isn't just a consequence of the conditioning. As a cyborg, she was made to be extremely loyal, not even a single word of displeasure out of a petty anger. They were programmed that way, or else the mental repercussions are quite severe.
Alessandro's past caused him to not trust anyone, afraid that he will once again get abandoned. His dislike on red headed ladies comes from that. And because of his defense mechanish of pushing people away and not letting them beyond the line he set, even he didn't let his cyborg come too close. But Petra couldn't have that. To prove that her feelings are real, despite the backlash, she outright curse him, and good on her! I was actually so proud of her at that moment.
Because of this volume, now I wonder if the other cyborgs' feelings are the same as Petra. Maybe it's true that their feelings are one of the effects of the conditioning, but that doesn't mean the love would remain 'forced' all throughout. It's kind of weird though, when it comes to other fratellos because of the huge age gap. I don't mean that the other fratellos should be paired romantically with each other. Like how Rico's feeling is more reverent than romantic love, and how Angelica's love is more to a father figure than anything else. But what I think is that the loyalty is a certain point of the conditioning but their love is a subjective feeling, romantically or not, even for cyborgs like them.
And I'm not going to praise the art again. I'll just let you see and admire it for yourselves.
Once again, a pretty solid volume. So glad to see the personal side of the newest fratello.
