Ich liebe ja Detektivgeschichten und Cosy Crime, daher war ich neugierig auf diesen ersten Band einer für mich neuen Reihe.
Die Protagonistin ist eine 29-jährige angehende Detektivin aus Österreich, gerade frisch getrennt von ihrem Verlobten und enterbt von der reichen Mutter. Mit der teuren Reise im Okzident Express erfüllt sie sich einen langgehegten Wunsch. Und prompt stirbt in ihrem Waggon ein Mann. Es sieht nach einem Spinnenbiss aus, aber kann das sein?

Mag sein, dass es keine große Krimikunst ist, die hier erzählt wird, aber mich hat die Geschichte bestens unterhalten.
Es war nicht superspannend, aber das erwarte ich von einem Cosy Crime auch gar nicht. Die Story war unterhaltsam, rätselhaft, kurzweilig und interessant. Ich mochte sie. Und ich werde diese Reihe fortsetzen und freue mich schon auf den nächsten Band.

Mmm...I was expecting something more, I have to admit it.
The reference to Agatha Christie, the train, the snow in the surrounding landscape... made me imagine a fascinating scenario and if the author was good at inventing a mystery completely different from that by our great Agatha, however she was unable to make it captivating and engaging.
___ THE PLOT __ Penny Küfer, aspiring private detective, has just completed her first week of detective training.
After being disinherited by her mother and abandoned by her boyfriend, she has only one consolation left: the much-dreamed-of trip on the Occident Express, the most luxurious train that has ever traveled the European rails.
On the train we find also the owner of the train itself, Mrs. Madeleine and her family. It's clear right from the start that the rich members of the family hate each other, but when the first to die, does it so right before Penny's eyes... she takes the opportunity to investigate.
___ THE MAIN CHARACTERS___ Well, I liked Penny.
Very young, around 20 years old, she's not afraid to roll up her sleeves and live her life without her mother's money and pursuing her dreams. She is nice and enterprising, but she doesn't pretend to be the bravest or smartest, she simply tries to do her best and puts passion into what she does.
The male counterpart for half the book is the good doctor who together with her ascertains the cause of the deaths and formulates the first hypotheses, in the second part of the book we have the charming inspector, also in his early twenties and new to the profession.
I also liked the inspector, who is not the classic policeman who thinks he knows everything and doesn't want detectives around. He lets Penny help him.
___ WHY ONLY 3 STARS ___
As I was saying the inspector lets Penny help him, BUT HERE I have to blame the author: Penny practically does everything and the author could have left some of the interrogations and intelligent deductions to the detective.
1) It is neither credible that Penny, without any experience, discovers the whole truth on her own and acts with self-confidence, nor that the inspector doesn't even ask a question, leaving Penny to do it.
2) I myself had got from the beginning how (through what) the first two murders had occurred.
3) halfway through the book I had already rightly hypothesized who the culprit could be (only 3 suspects remained and 2 were too obvious to be, they would have immediately been investigated by the police).
4) In the last chapters Penny explains "how and why" the crime was committed, but it was already clear from all the author's explanations and from all Penny's explanations to the inspector, so it is a useless repetition.
5) I expected Penny and the young inspector she feels attracted to, to have at least a small romantic exchange.
___ CONCLUSION ___ The book entertained me for a couple of days, it wasn't bad, but it didn't captivate me, it didn't make me want to read the sequel and unlike books that engage me, after finishing reading I don't miss the characters.
Maybe the next books in the series are better, but I don't think I'll read any more.

This book is a warm, rich tribute to the Golden Age of mystery novels. It takes from Christie and Conan Doyle and updates the atmosphere, giving the reader the same snug luxurious feeling while adding futuristic elements that fascinate and entrance.
The Occident Express is a byword for luxury travel. Leaving Vienna for Paris, it takes on board only a very few passengers in almost royal state. It may move in the opposite direction to the Orient Express, but it is no less exquisite. From the robot concierges to the quilted cushions on the elegant couches, the train oozes comfort.
Penny has had the worst week of her life. Her rich aristocratic mother, having found out that she has enrolled in a detective training academy, has publicly disowned her, and her snobbish fiancé, faced with her straightened circumstances, has abandoned her. But she has decided to carry on in spite of them.
Her passage on the Occident Express was the last thing she bought on her mother's lavish credit card. She determines to enjoy the trip and then carry on with her studies. Unfortunately, things don't go quite according to plan...

An diesem Buch hat mich leider wenig überzeugt. Die Figuren waren sehr flach, der Plot überhastet erzählt und die Protagonistin, die sehr unrealistisch gehandelt hat, scheint am Ende sogar hellseherische Fähigkeiten entwickelt zu haben. Das Setting wurde nicht genutzt und ist damit beinahe verschwendet, denn es hätte, ganz im Stil Hercule Poirots im Orientexpress, eine einzigartige Geschichte erzählt werden können. Am Ende wechselt plötzlich die Perspektive, um auch noch eine überhastete Liebesgeschichte zu erzählen... Alles in allem keine überzeugende Geschichte.

Brilliant
I loved the characters and definitely the setting. The Pippi Longstocking I grew up with was perfect and the “bad guys” amazing.

I’d actually rate this 3.5, because I figured out most of the major murder components in the first 90 pages. I did find the link to Pippi Longstocking amusing!
Penny has a wealthy background and an ideal fiance’. However, her grandmother disowns her when she insists on enrolling in a detective school, and her fiancé then dumps her. Penny had booked an excursion and paid for an excursion on the elite Occident Express Train before she was disinherited, and the incredibly wealthy, genius owner likes her! One of the wealthy sons tries charming Penny, but dies under mysterious circumstances, on a train isolated by a massive snow storm.

Hightech-Zug und Spinnenbiss
Nachdem Penny Küfer von ihrem Verlobten verlassen und von ihrer Mutter enterbt wurde, verbringt sie ihre - auf absehbare Zeit wohl letzte - Luxusreise im mondänen Okzident Express. Leider wird es kein Erholungsurlaub für sie, denn auf der Fahrt von Wien nach Paris liegt ein Toter in ihrem Abteil. Nach einer ersten Woche Ausbildung zur Privatdetektivin bietet ihr die Leiche die Möglichkeit, den Fall zu klären. Und das gelingt der Krimiheldin in ihrem ersten Abenteuer auf ihre spezielle und furchtlose Art.
Ich habe dieses Hörbuch als Freiexemplar von Saga Storify erhalten, was meine Rezension allerdings nicht beeinflusst. Das Aquarell des Covers zeigt das Profil der rothaarigen Detektivin und den Luxuszug, der gerade über eine hohe Brücke fährt. Der Schreibstil ist flüssig, die Kapitel haben eine angenehme Länge und tragen als Titel die exakte Uhrzeit dieser aufregenden Zugfahrt.
Die Stimme der Sprecherin Sarah Dostal ist sehr schön, allerdings ist ihre Betonung recht eigenwillig. An sehr vielen Stellen hatte ich den Eindruck, als hätte ein Computer einzelne Wörter zu Sätzen zusammengebaut. Es dauerte daher wirklich sehr lange, bis ich mit der Erzählstimme zurechtkam, zu distanziert und gefühllos wirkt ihre Erzählweise. Die Geschichte an sich ist nämlich interessant und kurzweilig. Der Titel und das Setting sind an Agatha Christie angelehnt und versprechen spannende Unterhaltung.
Das Buch hält dieses Versprechen in gewisser Weise. Handlung und Motiv sind nachvollziehbar, die Charaktere lebensnah. Die Protagonistin Penny ist in ihrer unbekümmerten Art sehr sympathisch und als angehende Detektivin gelingt ihr das Isolieren und Verhören der Verdächtigen recht gut. Somit ist nicht nur der Titel an Christie angelehnt, auch die Methoden der Ermittlerin ähneln jenen ihrer Protagonisten.
Insgesamt bietet das Hörbuch solide Unterhaltung, wäre mit der passenden Betonung der Sprecherin aber sicher ein größeres Vergnügen gewesen.

Penny hat das Glück eine fahrt im Okzident Express zu haben nachdem sie sich von ihrem Verlobten getrennt und ihrer Mutter nicht mehr akzeptiert wurde. Sie ist angehende Detektivin und noch am Anfang ihrer Ausbildung doch was passiert wenn im Zug ein mysteriöser Unfall passiert einem Passagier das Leben nimmt?
Ich fand das das Hörbuch interessant ist, es aber ein bisschen Spannung fehlt. Trozdem würde ich es jeder Zeit wieder hören. Ich finde auch das es gut in das heutige Zeitalter passt.
Mir hat Penny (Hauptcharaktär) sehr gut gefallen da sie sehr realistisch beschrieben wurde und nicht so gehoben wirkte auch wenn sie das früher mal war. Sie war mir sehr symphatisch.
Der Ort an dem sich diese geschichte ausspielte hätte meiner meinung nach auch etwas mehr beschrieben werden können.
Aber alles in allem fand ich es sehr gut und vergebe hiermit 4 von 5 Schneeflocken:)

This was a cute cozy mystery. No gruesome bloody deaths, which I was thankful for. I did like the first half more than the second, mostly due to the writing style. I don't like it when the author keeps repeating things like "who could it be" and "why would they do that"?

She goes ahead with a pre-paid scheduled trip on a high-tech luxury train in Europe. And when a man dies in her cabin, on a snowstorm stranded track, Penny decides to investigate on her own. More deaths occur, and the situation on board becomes more intense, even as a policeman finally arrives. Will he and Penny solve the crimes and find the murderer? Will he and Penny fall for each other? Well yes, because it is a cozy mystery, ha ha.

Murder on the Occident Express was a fun cozy mystery. Twenty-nine year old Penny Kufer's fiance left her and her mother disinherited her. Since her passage on the Occident Express is already paid for, she embarks on the Vienna to Paris trip alone. Madeleine Salmann, owner of the Occident Express and members of her family, are also taking the trip. When two of Madeleine's sons die mysteriously, Penny goes into sleuth mode. A week ago Penny started a fifteen week course to become a professional detective and she is eager to use what she's learned. I liked the setting of this book and the characters. The author made the case that any one of four people could be the murderer. I liked the flow of this book and kept reading to see what happened next. I look forward to reading future books in this series.

Murder on the Occident Express by Alex Wagner is the first book in the Penny Kufer Investigates series. Penny Kufer, after completing her first week of detective training, takes a trip on the luxurious and innovative Occident Express, only to find herself caught up in a murder investigation. An interesting classical style murder mystery but set in a very modern environment with innovative technological gadgets. I loved Penny's determination and curiosity. An enjoyable and captivating book that would appeal to Agatha Christie fans.

For me, this was only o.k. There's a lot that is a bit unbelievable, but, even suspending disbelief, several major 'discoveries' were obvious to me well be for the investigator realized the truth. I kept waiting for some twist that never came. So I basically had the thing figured out by halfway through. The writing was competent and the editing, fortunately, was fine. But there wasn't enough in this first volume to compel me to continue the series.

Should have DNFed, but it was an easy skim. So many things wrong or inaccurate. A police officer who had just finished training would not be an inspector. The author misuses amateurish for amateur (as well as nauseous for nauseated, but that's a lost cause).
SPOILER ALERT: When did the killer have time for assignations with her lover if she was essentially at her employer's side 24 hours a day? Why were the victims killed in Penny's suite rather than their own?

Quite an interesting book
Instead of an older detective, like Miss Marple or Sherlock Holmes, Penny was an apprentice detective. She hadn’t learned all the aspects of her craft and was relying on her instincts and quick mind. This was a welcome difference to other detective stories I’ve been reading.

Groaner of a novel.
This book is so badly written, I'd appreciate a refund. I only finished about 6 chapters before I jumped to the end for the ludicrous finale. From badly chosen adjectives to amateurish errors (Europeans do not call their mothers "mom") and clumsy sentence construction, I'd advise passing this one over.

Although some parts were quite implausible, the storyline was quite unique with a variety of characters. I did not warm up to our heroine but the plot carried the book well enough for me to want to finish. It was an enjoyable read about three mysterious murders on a snowbound train. Indeed a cozy mystery.

A Very Exciting Mystery
This is my first book by Alex Wagner, but not my last. This book kept me guessing throughout all of the twists and surprises that were hampering the investigation. The characters were all realistic, with some likable and others hateable. A wonderful adventure. I hope to read more about the investigations of Penny Kufer in the near future.

First of her mystery books I have read and it was a quick and fun read, reminiscent of Agatha Christie mysteries. This one finds a new PI in training on a train trip from Vienna to Paris. When family members of the train’s eccentric owner are found dead, Penny uses her skills to solve the mystery.

Delightful new detective
Penny is a bright new presence and she has not completed her training! I really enjoyed the characters and the solution was presented in a fashion that would have made Sherlock proud. Looking forward to more adventures.

Fast paced and fun
Enjoyed the main character. This is a good first book to the series, will definitely read more. If you like to guess who done it, this is a fun ride on a train to keep you guessing.

As a lover of Agatha Christie's writing, I really enjoyed this book! Penny is a great character and I anticipate she will be more fun and smarter as time goes by!
