One human heart will save them all.For ten years I’ve listened to my Grandmother’s warnings; Don’t be too loud, don’t stand out, and, most of all, don’t be Chosen like my mother had been. To be dressed in white and presented to the beast that prowls the misty forest surrounding our village. To be a sacrifice that protects our people from the beast’s wrath for another decade.
My mother’s cloak still hangs in the square, preserved as proof of the last sacrifice made. Where once it was white, as they all start, it’s now stained with the last of her blood. It’s all that was left of her.
My sister, too young to remember when they’d taken my mother away, doesn’t take our grandmother’s warning to heart as she should. But I have. My entire life, I’ve behaved and watched over my reckless sister so we can both avoid our mother's fate. Until I’m betrayed.
Fate Chose me, but I’m more than a sacrifice to the beast prowling in the woods. He’s more than I ever expected, and he’s hungry for more than just my blood.
Prowl is a short story, little red riding hood retelling. It's dark, spicy, and introduces you to the Aphotic World in its beginning.
“Enjoy life while she can since no one is promised safety when the wolf comes to call.”
“I’m a mess, but, for the first time in my life, I feel whole.”
This book is SUCH a tease. I am desperate for more. Yet, at the same time, I’m fascinated by how much the author was able to convey in less than 50 pages. Does this set the stage for her broader series? Possibly. But even as a short standalone, is is a masterpiece.
Prowl is a fascinating fairytale retelling of. Brothers Grimm classic. In a small, rural town, a decennial ritual known as the “Choosing” demands a sacrifice in exchange for the safety of the citizenry. One human is given to the mysterious ‘wolf in the woods,’ a very real nightmare memorialized for all to see in the twin square.
Our FMC, Isabella, knows the Choosing all too well. Ten years prior, it claimed her mother, leaving her and her younger sister Grace with the grandmother. Isabella and her sister are reminded of this loss daily; the red cloak worn by each sacrifice hangs for all to see from the statute of a wolf, And as the as 10th anniversary approaches, that tattered piece of clothing will become more than a symbol of ritual. Soon, a new red riding hood emerges…
Elsewhere, our beastly MMC, Euric, is also grappling with the Choosing. He, however, plans to derail tradition to protect his people. While wandering the forbidden forest, he crosses paths with Isabella. Could she be the solution to all his problems? The mistaken identity trope helps justify their initial interaction, but soon, instant attraction and kidnap catalyze an enemies to unlikely allies to lovers story for the ages.
Beyond the expert pacing and the smüt, the book also feels like an adventure for fans of Ice Planet Barbarians, Rowe, or The Beast. All Isabella ever wanted was to save her family and the future of her town. And Euric solely endeavored to protect his pack. While reading, it becomes clear the two are not so different after all.

“I'm going to thoroughly enjoy devouring every bit of you, Little Lamb. And if you try to run off to your granny's, then I'll just have to eat her, too.”
This Little Red Riding Hood retelling was short but packed a punch! Every ten years the humans offer the beasts in the forest a female sacrifice. After wondering into the forest in a fit of anger wearing the red cloak of her sacrificed mother, she runs into a Lycan beast. He is ready to sacrifice her to the Goddess but things unexpectedly change. Despite the story being short I felt that I got everything I wanted from the characters and the story. I would recommend this if you enjoy loose retellings, steam, and short stories.
I love the concept behind this telling of Little Red Riding Hood. It’s a great short story that I would love to see fleshed out into a full novel. Like the Big Bad Wolf, I would completely devour it.
(I hate myself a little for the pun-filled review, but oh well…)
So far - even if its short - this is my fav LRRH. I love retellings and I found a lot good one but never RedRidingHood ones… even if the shifter / Red setup can be a great shifter story it NEVA is… but this really was a great setup. I would have enjoyed more with some extra (not too much) teasing as an enemies to lover plot bit still it was okey. Giving (3.5 —>) 4 as I expected less but exceeded my expectations…
Quick yet satisfying read. A retelling is nothing new but the twist of this story is. I have read many books that are 5 times longer yet do not end nearly as satisfying. Well done and looking forward to reading more by the author
This Little Red Riding Hood retelling is incredible. It’s a nice, light, quick read that introduces us into the world that lives inside Elizabeth Myrvas head. It starts with introducing us to Isabella, the main character, who has lived her life literally in the shadows, filled with fear of being Chosen like her Mother was. After being betrayed -in a way I won’t spoil for you- she runs off into the woods, where the Big Bad Wolf is happy to find her. The twists only get better from there in this short, spicy, and captivating one hour read. This is definitely a book that you’ll want to read over and over again. It’s easy to digest, immersive, and really sets you up with a great feel for what Elizabeth Myrvas' world is going to bring to us. I will be reading this again and following this author for more of her writing. I can’t wait.
What fantastic writing fairy tale of Red Riding Hood! I have to give kudos to this author to be able to convey such a great world build and plot in such a short book! This actually had vibes of the movie Red Riding Hood, but instead of the wolf invading the village l, the village must sacrifice a citizen every 10 years to be slaughtered.
I'm glad I came upon this book, though it's a short novella! The story was great, and and steamy, I'm definitely going to be reading other books by this author.
I'm in love with this retelling of Red Riding Hood!! Isabella was able to see beyond the wolf and love and accept him for who he really is. A gentle and very passionate giant.
This is exactly what I’m looking for in a dominate Lycan/werewolf book. It’s a creative retelling of little red riding hood along with a unique twist on lycans spicy scenes that I haven’t seen before personally. Definitely worth the price and a quick, delicious read.
