About the author

Marguerite Germaine Marie Donnadieu, (4 April 1914 -3 March 1996) known as Marguerite Duras, was a French novelist, playwright, screenwriter, essayist, and experimental filmmaker.

Her script for the film Hiroshima mon amour (1959) earned her a nomination for Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards.

All of Duras's novels are disturbing. With their simple but infinitely evocative sentences and soul-striking repetitions, the words of the great Marguerite touch something profound inside us; they scratch and tickle somewhere in them eminently. They are intimate, and in this, they sometimes feel badly closed wounds or taboo and unformulated desires.
Of all her novels, "Agatha" is, however, the one that troubled me the most, embarrassed me, and disgusted me the most ... No doubt because it is about incest, the taboo of taboos. Still, if 'I appreciated the style and if I perceived its grandeur, I did not really like this novel, and I closed it with pleasure, happy to have come out of it ... It is one of those stories that we are pleased to get rid of, how glad we are, when we wake up from a nightmare, to realize that we are alive and that it was just a bad dream.

ELE. – Está realmente um tempo de uma extrema suavidade, tendo em conta que o Inverno vai chegar e que o nosso amor vai partir para uma viagem de uma tal dor que será como morrer.

Quem acha “O Amante” um livro problemático é porque não conhece “Agatha”, a peça onde Marguerite Duras aflora o derradeiro tabu. Agatha e o irmão vivem há muitos anos, desde o verão em que ela tinha 18 anos, uma relação proibida, um “amor criminoso”. Desde aí voltam com regularidade à casa de férias para consumar esse “amor culpado”, mesmo já estando casados com outras pessoas. Pela última vez, encontram-se na vivenda Agatha para se despedirem, visto que a irmã considera que só a partida para o estrangeiro poderá pôr fim aquela relação incestuosa.

ELE – Então o seu corpo vai ser levado para longe de mim, para longe das fronteiras do meu corpo, vai ser impossível encontrá-lo e vou morrer por causa disso.

I have owned this book for at least ten years, perhaps much longer. Even though I had read several of Duras' books and really enjoyed them (Hiroshima mon amour, le Vice-Consul, La doubler, Les petits chevaux de Tarquinea), for some reason, I have not read this till now. Once I started reading it (it is a play; very short), I could not put it down. The dialogue is amazing. I had to read it aloud, at times! It is also troubling as it deals with incest: a brother and a younger sister. And I just realized that it was made into a film directed and screen-written by Duras herself. Interesting, Yann Andréa, the young man with whom she lived for about 16 years (on and off till her death, as I recall) is in it. I have not watched yet but it is available on You Tube so I'm planning to do so.
