The last title in this series - a feminist coming-of-age re-telling of the historic events leading up to the formation of the famous Preston female football team the Dick, Kerr Ladies. It’s 1920, and the Dick, Kerr Girls football team have a new member training with them! Martha - little sister to Hettie and Freddie - has finally been given her chance to swap street kickabouts with the local lads for the chance to play alongside the world’s best female footballers. But Martha has more to worry about than keeping up with the older girls. She’s dealing with new and confusing feelings; things at home are hard; and the future of women’s football in general is under threat. Are Martha’s dreams - both on and off the pitch - too far out of reach?
ll Together Now is the third book in the Dick, Kerr Girls series by Eve Ainsworth. Based on the true story of the Dick, Kerr Ladies - one of the earliest known women’s football teams, this story is set in 1920 and follows Martha, the newest team member of the Dick, Kerr girls football team.
The youngest member of the squad, Martha starts training with the girls and makes new friends, including Lily. Lily is one of the stars of the team and Martha finds herself drawn to her new friend. But outside of football, Martha has other things to worry about; her dad is ill and women’s football is being threatened.
Although this is part of a series, it was easy to read as a standalone story. It is an interesting story in terms of the establishment of women’s football and starts to look at some of the battles that they had to face in order to be allowed to continue to play.
In my opinion this is the best book of the series!!
It shows the struggles as the younger sibling, it shows the what Martha has to go through figuring out her sexuality, dealing with loss and coping with the aftermath
