A well done fan tribute to the cuisine of this imaginary world, with references to the food traditions of several European countries. Lovely just to look at and read the story. Lots of soup and stew recipes. A couple very yummy looking gingerbread recipes. And much more.

Uwielbiam!

I should probably preface this review with the fact that I don't cook or bake. I don't like doing it and I am not good at it (the former might be the reason for the latter). As a consequence, I have only skimmed over the recipe instructions while reading this book. I also have not eaten any of the food made from this book (though it is full of sticky notes marking recipes that I am interested in having my husband, who does enjoy cooking, make for us to try).

That said, this book was a lot of fun to read, following the culinary adventures of narrator as she travels the world of the witcher. Written in the first person, in a journal style, you really get a feel for her as a person and her entries are sprinkled with fun references to the game and books (more so the games) plus amusing references to our world outside of the witcher sphere.

The art and photographs are beautiful and really evoke the setting. I enjoyed how each location had its own art style for the page border and chapter heading.

Overall it's a beautiful and fun read, even if cooking isn't your forte.

The ONLY reason I deducted a star is that you're going to have to do some specialty shopping to make the stuff in this book. Nearly every recipe requires a spice or meat that you can't find at the box store. BUT. This is the gold standard for fandom cookbooks. Dishes with enough familiar elements to be mouthwatering, and yet tweaked enough to feel like something from a witcher's table. The narrator has a plot of her own, which lends a story element I enjoyed. The photography is gorgeous. So much love went into this book, and it shows.

Cute, recipes look great and not overly complex, and offer both an entirely from scratch option as well as store bought options (ie. making your own sourdough). The narrative of it being like a culinary travelogue was really cute and fun.

I don't have a lot to say about most of the recipes (yet!) but I loved the wholesome introduction written by the authors, and the foreword written by the creator of this universe. Both encourage you to try any of the yummy dishes suggested here, and provide helpful tips to keep you motivated.
I found the "plot device" pretty cute. Our narrator is a cartographer chronicling her culinary adventures on the several regions of the Witcher world. Through her eyes, we are introduced to the different and unique regional traditions, and hear curious legends and myths, sometimes featuring beloved characters.
I only tried a couple of recipes so far, but the actual results have not been too far from the enticing pictures in the book! Also, the instructions are pretty detailed, so even a noob chef like myself is able to follow through. They were tasty too, so I'll be sure to try some of the many I have bookmarked. All in all, this was a perfect Christmas gift!

Random favorite bits:
- Chicken sandwich recipe. Dijkstra reference :D
- "'Wind's howling,' muttered a white-haired man looking for a dry corner near the gate" - You can just hear these, in a particular white-haired man's voice
- "... and the city's humble savior, the Crimson Avenger..." Our hero triumphs again! Very well placed in Novigrad's The Chameleon, the Inn owned by our dear Dandelion.
- "There, we witnessed the exciting conclusion of the Great Beauclair Gwent Tournament" GWENT MENTIONED! TIME FOR A REPLAYYY!! ANOTHER ROUND OF GWENT!!!
- "... and another about a brilliant rat that ran Beauclair's most prestigious tavern, creating culinary wonders from the simplest ingredients" right after a Double Veggie Ratatouille recipe
- "... based on the recipes of the legendary elven chef Ra'mses Gor-Thon" ah yes, known for his Sand-witch I'diot technique
- "... I listened to the story (...) of how Geralt of Rivia came to be the property's owner, transforming the run-down estate into a once more respected and prospering one." I love how it's canon that you spent an obscene amount of hard-earned money to customize your Corvo Bianco DLC home. Only missing a reference to the giant painting of naked Geralt, right at the entrance, for all guests to enjoy...
- All of the Kaer Morhen recipes :') From Geralt's omelete for Yennefer, to Ciri's porridge, and Vesemir's stew, all the fan service is there at the end. I appreciate this section was framed with our narrator finding a mysterious jornal with these recipes, as there really wouldn't be any justification for her to actually go there.

My first impression is that this is very wordy… prosey. But then that is exactly what reading an Andrzej Sapkowski book is like.

Right off the bat though, I wish I didn’t fear making sourdough starter. I love a good sourdough (like the rest of the world, I started to make one during lockdown, but I was pregnant, and I just couldn’t handle feeding it without wanting to vomit. I haven’t tried since.).

And I don’t even like kale, but the first actual recipe has me wanting to make it for my workday lunches. (The White Orchard Inn Groats with Bacon)… I even already have some Pearl Barley in my pantry.

Somehow I completely forgot that I was taking notes while reading through this, and I do mean reading.

If you hate those cooking blogs that have an entire backstory before you finally get to the recipe, do not read this book. I found it delightful, but I cannot believe how long it took me to read a cook book as I was only able to read one page at a time whilst doing other things. Normally I flick through a recipe book rather quickly all in one session. I really did actually like that _every single_ recipe had a page worth of story to go with it.

Well done. And actually a few recipes that I would happily try.

I made every single recipe in this cookbook!

I stumbled across The Witcher Official Cookbook: Provisions, Fare, and Culinary Tales from Travels Across the Continent in a bookstore and, being a fan of the novels and particularly the video game The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, bought it on a whim. Also on a whim, I decided (after owning the cookbook for several months and barely touching it) that I would work my way through the entire thing, all eighty-one recipes.

No joke, that was one of the best decisions I ever made.

I was no more than a passable cook before I started this project, hesitant and unsure of my culinary abilities. But the way to get better at anything is simply by doing it, and in the process, I found the fun and the satisfaction that come from improving a skill. I’m still not a master chef and never will be, but I’m miles more competent than I was, much more confident, and much more adventurous. The thought of attempting something new in the kitchen now fills me with excitement rather than trepidation.

Aside from my personal growth journey, this is a genuinely fantastic cookbook. It’s SO. MUCH. FUN. The recipes are varied and clever, with an emphasis on cooking from scratch, so if you’re newer to cooking, this might be your first time making your own soup stock or working with rising dough. (Due to the involved nature of many of the recipes, however, this book is not a good resource of someone looking for quick, low-effort meals.)

The book takes heavy inspiration from The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, and the sections of the book are organized not by type of food, but by the locations in that game, in the order you explore them: White Orchard, Velen, Oxenfurt, Novigrad, Skellige, Beauclair, and Toussaint, with a Kaer Morhen bonus chapter at the end. The recipes reflect the tenor and tone of the locations as well: hearty Polish food in Velen, fancier meals in the cosmopolitan cities, Scandinavian-inspired food in Skellige, French cuisine in Toussaint. There’s also a fun “story” tying the book together about a Koviri cartographer trying out all manner of local dishes as she travels the Continent, and the whole thing is filled with truly beautiful photographs bound to make a reader salivate.

This cookbook does have a few flaws. Most egregiously, the recipes fail to list overall estimated preparation and cooking times. Instead, cooks must review the recipe steps and do their own math. This can be a real problem with a recipe requires hours or even days of prep; cooks should definitely read through the whole recipe several times before attempting it, as even recipes without wait time tend to involve extensive prep or cooking time. I hope future editions of the book might rectify this, as it would be a very easy adjustment.

As for the recipes themselves, I certainly enjoyed some more than others, and I’ll say which ones in my individual recipe notes below, but there were very few I disliked and none that I regretted trying. The book has a great variety of items to prepare—appetizers, main courses, desserts, and beverages. I personally found the appetizers and main courses to be the standout dishes; the desserts were good but not often ground-breaking, and while not all the beverages were alcoholic, enough were, and I’m just not much of a drinker.

Be aware that most of the non-dessert recipes are not vegetarian, let alone vegan. Multiple recipes require ingredients not easily found, at least in the average American grocery store. I got very familiar with farmers markets, Asian supermarkets, my local butcher shop, and a Polish food store I’m lucky enough to live near. There were a few specialty items I ended up having to order online, and a few cases where I simply could not find an ingredient and was forced to make a substitute.

Overall, I loved this cookbook. I loved my experience reading it, exploring it, and trying things out. My journey with it was some of the most fun I’ve had in a long time, and ignited a new passion for preparing food. I had such an awesome time with it, and I hope other readers and cooks will too!

Pros:
• Great variety of food and drink items, with multiple cuisines represented
• Varying levels of difficulty and complexity, good for amateur or accomplished cooks
• Recipes are easy to read and follow, and often offer guidance on what to look for as a dish approaches doneness
• Beautiful photos and ambience throughout
• The “story” told through recipe introductions and bonus content is fun and engaging
• Made with obvious and genuine love for the world of The Witcher, particularly The Witcher III: Wild Hunt

Cons:
• No overall prep/baking/cooking time listed for recipes
• Several recipes call for unusual or hard-to-find ingredients, with few substitutions suggested
• Not vegetarian or non-drinker friendly

I will unfortunately hit the Goodreads character limit for reviews before I can fit all my recipe notes here. But I will list out my favorite recipes from the book:
• Chicken Sandwiches with Kaedweni Stout Marinade
• Temerian Sourdough Multiseed Bread
• Willoughby Roast Chicken with Nuts and Herbs
• Mahakaman Zalewajka
• Campfire-Style Baked Potatoes
• Leftover Potato Bread
• Sorcerer’s Beef Stew with Zerrikanian Spices

Beautifully ilustrated. And very tasty. Dishes vary from quick little dishes to full course meals. It has everything you'd wish for. There are soups, breads, sweets, cakes, toppings, and even elixirs and beers. Stuff you can prepare under an hour and other that will take days to make. Whole cookbook is made as some sort of a diary of a traveler. hero's perspective is interesting and sometimes silly. A great book to have if you are a fan of the series (books or games. We don't talk about netflix adaptation)
My personal favorite is racuszki. I HAVE NEVER MADE MYSELF A BETTER RACUSZKI. THEY WERE GONE AS SOON AS I TOOK 'EM OFF THE PAN 💀💀 (very recommended) also Gulasz wołowy z Bażanciarni FOR THE LOVE OF GODS IT TAKES SOME TIME BUT ITS 100% WORTH THE JOB.

This is a very interesting idea. It's visually appealing, great little anecdotes for each recipe, and can yield some really tasty dishes. Some of the recipes call for ingredients that I would consider challenging to find, which can make preparing for the meals difficult. Overall, not bad at all for a literal cookbook.

Lisioł. Oficjalna książka kucharska.
.
Czy Lisioł lubi gotować? Zależy od nastroju i przepisu, a propozycje z „Wiedźmin. Oficjalna książka kucharska” autorstwa Karoliny Krupeckiej i Anity Sarny bardzo przypadły Lisiołowi do gustu. Czy lisia kuchnia to przetrwała? Niekoniecznie w jednym kawałku, ale było warto!
.
Dlatego Lisioł machnął odpowiednie piwo, poprawił eliksirem – w sumie to trzema – i przystąpił do spania w chlebaku. Obiad może poczekać. Międzyczasie dobre wróżki zrobiły kisiel na winie (łapki lizać),a nawet tartę gruszkową pełną słodyczy oraz dobrych wspomnień.
.

This cookbook instantly caught my attention because it is based on a novel-turned-video game and eventual show. I find most cookbooks based on fictional entertainment media intriguing, if nothing else. This one is quite good. I cooked several recipes from this book. After the first, I kept going, with mains and desserts alike; all were quite tasty.
The recipes are organized by region within The Witcher universe, rather than by dish type (main, appetizer, dessert, etc.), which makes navigation slightly more difficult, but it’s easy enough to work around this by using the index or simply browsing the book. The pictures are gorgeous and draw the cook in. Not only are the food photos enticing because they show the dishes looking delicious, but they are also presented as though the reader is there, at a pub, castle, forest, or fortress.
The recipe instructions were easy enough to follow, though not designed for novice cooks. They are laid out in a clear step-by-step manner. Many of the recipes assume the cook already has a certain level of skill. No skill level is stated, so it’s better to read through the recipe first and then decide if it’s within your skill set. Cooking times were accurate for the most part. The vast majority of ingredients were accessible, though a few had to be sourced online. The recipes in this book have a distinctly Eastern European flair, and I do not live there, so some ingredients were not readily available. There are mostly mains and desserts, some drinks, and a few small dishes that could serve as sides or possibly as appetizers. The dessert recipes turned out the best for me; all were well worth the effort, and some required quite a bit of effort.
This cookbook is best suited for intermediate cooks who have a love of hearty, robust foods. The recipes are both appetizing and filling. Unless you are feeding more than four people, there will be leftovers.
I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys cooking, The Witcher, or anyone who enjoys immersing themselves in good food with a bit of whimsy.

Úvod knihy si do parády zobral sám Pán Sapkowski, vysvetľuje svoj vzťah k vareniu a prezrádza čitateľom, ktoré recepty zo Zaklínačovej série v tejto knihe nájdeme.

Belosad, Velen, Oxenfurt, Novigrad, Skellige, Beauclar, Toussaint, či Kaer Morhen. Každý kraj ma však zároveň svoj folklór, zvyklosti a chute.

Kniha je absolútne nádherne spracovaná. Okrem úžasne nadekorovsných jedál tu nájdete fotografie typické pre daný kraj zo sveta Zaklínača. A orgován samozrejme tiež nemôže chýbať.

Jól tagolt könyv, minden ismerős helyszínt bejár minden vidék saját ízeket, alapanyagokat és hangulatot kap, ami különösen izgalmassá teszi a könyv felépítését.
A könyv megjelenése is figyelemre méltó. A keménytáblás, igényes kivitel és a részletgazdag illusztrációk tökéletesen hozzák a Vaják-univerzum hangulatát.
Összességében a The Witcher hivatalos szakácskönyv nemcsak a rajongóknak ajánlott.

It's actually very well writen. The recipes are detailed and uses common ingredients that I can easily gather (which is not case of Warcraft cookbook). I tried few recipes and they were tasty and I loved them, also I felt the immersion of the world. I like that it uses recipes from Polish culture and some of them have been cooked commonly in Poland.
Only thing I'd do better is sorting the recipes. It is sorted by regions but when I search for specific recipe it can be a pain in the ass, much better would be sorting by a type of food.
Otherwise, excellent cookbook.

This was an absolute blast to read through the different recipes, which varied based on region and even person, from the Witcher world! A lot of recipes sound absolutely delicious, but I can't enjoy some of them based on my own food allergy, but that shouldn't stop anyone else from looking through this cookbook and finding something they could enjoy.
