As the second son of the most notorious Mafia boss in Italy, I’d always wanted to make a name for myself.
I wasn’t the kind of man who waited around for scraps.
I was proactive, wanting a better life than the one I’d grown up with.
But crime was all I’d known. It was who I was at the core.
So I made a plan:
Go to the States and steal the Bianco’s territory.
I was on a mission, determined for nothing to distract me.
Until I met her.
The daughter of the enemy.
She was too innocent for me—too sweet for my liking.
Yet I couldn’t get her out of my head.
Rosa Bianco obeyed her father, just as every Mafia Princess should.
That was until she met me, the darkness to her bright shining light.
I had to have her.
I had to destroy her.
I had to save her from myself.
She had no idea that I was going to take everything from her.
I’d destroy the life she’d come to know. I’d eradicate those around her.
There was only one question that remained:
Did I destroy her too, or keep her all for myself?

meet the Baretta patriarch so you can drool over him too
I’m completely and utterly captivated with Luca Baretta. I’m so glad we were able to experience his story. I was devastated by the events that took place during the opening of Lorenzo Baretta, and have always wanted more. And I can honestly say Lorenzo’s parents had a love story that was destined from second they laid eyes in each other. Watching the way Luca broke his own rules to save his Mia Topolina from face planting, to seeing him wake her up 🥵 then to have her flip the script and take what she wanted from him… talk about perfectly matched. But in the end it was how he changed his entire everything to ensure she was safe and his. I was utterly smitten. With each book I fall deeper in love with the character this author brings into the world.
I first read this story as part of the extremely limited release charity anthology COERCED (that is no longer published).
Hmm. This was so close to being good, but little details kept getting in the way. He just comes off as being so clueless and sort of stumbling his way into things. Which, if he’s going to be a domineering arsehole, you sorta at least need him to be a competent and generally correct domineering arsehole. Otherwise… meh. Then he seems to not even be sure if he wants Rosa to live wayyy too far into the book. If it was a longer book, or a different style of book, sure, but it was like ‘huh? didn’t he already fall for her?’. His reason for wanting to take over sooner was because she was going to be married off, and so yes, he makes all the right noises about making sure nobody else touches her because she’s his. Except… his actual reason is that if someone else touches her then in his mind she won’t be his anymore, and I’m sorry but. No. Nope. Do not like a man who will drop a woman (with whom he apparently has a soul connection with) if another man touches her. So yeah - just lots of little details that didn’t work. Also some bleh fat shaming stuff with the dad. He was evil, but not because he was fat, ya know? Oh - and then at the end it turns out that the next book is about his son, who takes over once Luca is dead… so… cool… alright then.
*read this short story from the Coerced anthology*
okay so i’m…not impressed. i find that not just for this short story, but for SO many others, they often tend to have no sort of connection or chemistry between both main characters. there’s so much plot and action going on that it seems that authors simply forget about any type of romance, connection, possible realism and more.
specifically in this case, this novella just fell so flat for me and it didn’t feel fun to read at all. Rosa, the fmc, clearly has no idea what the sentence “be your own person” means and Luca, the mmc, clearly has no idea what the words “personal boundaries” mean. also, the whole mafia aspect? complete. shit. Luca is your typical wannabe son of a mafia leader or upper boss who thinks he’s the shit because of who his dad is and how he got Rosa wrapped around his finger after fucking her while she slept.
all in all, i’m most likely going to forget about this novella by tomorrow and it was definitely not a memorable read whatsoever.
What can I say this is the first book I’ve read of Abigail Davies I’m ashamed to say but my God I loved it. Yeah I’ve started backwards and read Luca before Lorenzo mainly because I saw that it was a novella and I needed something quick but gritty. And this didn’t disappoint. From the opening chapter I was captivated and knew I wouldn’t put this book down. I was even a little sad when it ended but knowing that Luca got his Mia Topolina in the end had me so happy! I’m ready to drown myself in the Abigail’s mafia world of the Baretta family! She definitely has a way of sucking you in and I can’t wait to get stuck in to more. Five stars for me!
Whatever Abigail writes I am there to read it so when I spotted this short novella set in her Mafia world I jumped right in. Luca is ready to take on his own part of world and doesn't want to be let heading up his division of the family.. but what he doesn't expect is a stunning girl to cross his path. Rosa can't wait to get out from under her dad's clutches but knows deep down that it will take something drastic to make that happen..and a random trip in a cafe one day changes all that. Would love to read more more more about these guys!
3.5 stars. Luca Beretta is determined to make his mark and to claim territory in the United States so he can settle down and make his own home. He hadn't anticipated that he would be interested in Rosa, the daughter of the man whom he plans to take down. While a short novella, it had just enough to build up the characters and their background and for Luca to demonstrate that he is in charge, bringing Rosa into the fold by her own choice.
Super short read. Epically short. I'm not sure what the author was trying to do. Everything happened so quickly. From what little there was, I did like Rosa. Luca was ok, but again, there wasn't much at all to go on. I'm hoping that the next book at least has some actual development with the plot, characters, and overall storyline. This book wasn't bad. Just didn't have much of anything.
to be fair it was closer to 2.5 stars but also i feel like i should have read others in this series because i really just did not care or have any attachments to literally anyone or anything. i mean it was like 70 pages so like i didn’t expect too much but i thought at least y the end i would have some emotion lol
I'm a fan of Abigail's work and Luca has started this new series with a bang! He's decided he wants to be the boss and run the mafia the way it should be run, as a family - and nothing is going to stop him....
Luca Beretta is the gripping and gritty prequel to the brilliant Unseen Underground dark mafia series by Abigail Davies, and I loved it. I was so excited to read the patriarch’s story and I wasn’t disappointed!
A pretty interesting start to this series. A quick read on how Luca got his Lady and his territory. I for one am glad things played out the way they did! I'm reading for the next book!
A very quick 80 page prequel novella to the Beretta series. You are introduced to the Italian mafia taking over America. Not sure yet if I will read the rest of the series.
This is just a very short novella about Luca and Rosa, who are Lorenzo, in book 2's parents. It was short but packed a lot in it and some history behind the Beretta family coming into power.
