Confronting the Enemy

Rate this book
What do you get when you don’t care about anything but winning?

A confrontation that turns everything into a battle for victory.

Chance
Chance McCellan didn’t have many hardships. In fact, his life had been paved in privilege since before he’d even been born. A Sands Cove child, and a Windsor Academy baby, Chance had always been able to get away with murder. Still, he wasn’t the only one. His entire family were able to do whatever they hell that they wanted, and that was something that Chance had always taken advantage of.

Despite his charmed life, there’s one regret that has haunted him for three years, and not one to let life control him, Chance finally decides to do something about it. Though he’s never been the type of guy to apologize for himself, this goes beyond an apology. With his keen mind, exemplary fighting skills, and unrelenting nature, he dares anyone to try to stop him.

Nothing will stand in his way of her.

Harper
Harper Crosby didn’t let life’s hardships get her down. In fact, the harder that life knocked her down, the stronger she was when she got back up. Though she lived in Sands Cove and went to Windsor Academy, that didn’t mean that she had immunity from the harsher side of life. With only one friend to her credit, that was enough for Harper because people were crappy. Just look at her parents.

Despite her determination to remain positive, there’s one experience that she can’t shake, and it’s not for lack of trying. For three years, Harper’s been doing her best to move past other people’s opinions of her, but words did have the ability to hurt, regardless of that stupid Sticks-and-Stones limerick. With her pride, dignity, and intelligence in her corner, she’s focused on ignoring the past once and for all.

She’s focused on ignoring him.

When it’s been three years and there’s no stopping the final confrontation…
After trying to make things right for three years, Chance is no longer willing to sit back and wait. With time not on his side, Harper Crosby no longer has the luxury of going about her business, acting like he doesn’t exist. It’s time to bring out the big guns, and he’s really good at doing that.

After trying to ignore what happened for three years, Harper quickly realizes that ignorance is no longer an option for her. When Chance McCellan throws down the gauntlet, she’s torn between picking it up and throwing it at his face or walking way. Little does she know that walking away isn’t on the table.

Even though Chance knows that Harper will never forgive him, and Harper knows that Chance will never change, hate is just as powerful as love when mistakes have been made. However, when two people are fighting for the rest of their lives, nothing is off-limits in the pursuit of victory.

There's not much to add to my bio, I'm pretty boring...LOL. My favorite thing is to read and, last year, I decided to trade in some of those reading hours and try my hand at writing. The experience has been one of the best things I could have ever embarked upon. It's turned into a hobby that is fun and thoroughly enjoyable. When I'm not reading or writing, I'm spending time with my family or friends.

While I liked this book, the MMC being a disgusting manw h o r e for two plus years after he realized he loved the FMC ruined this book for me. And I used the word disgusting because he was so sleazy about it. At least that’s the impression I got from it. This author never satisfactorily explained why he kept messing around with every willing chick that entered his line of vision for so many years. And truthfully I can’t even figure out how he would have had time to stalk the FMC and have that extensive a s e x life and still do school and family and his fight club and workout to maintain all his sexiness all at the same time. Smh.

So like I said, this book was ruined because the MMC was never exonerated enough to actually be a lead in a romance story. I did like the effort he put in to win the FMC especially after such a huge f#€k up. But it simply wasn’t enough. Not for me.

I loved the FMC though. She was sweet and I liked how she tried to make herself independent of the wealth she already came from. I would definitely reread this book for her alone. Normally my desire to reread a book would make it a good book but not in this case. I was simply invested in the FMC that much. Good luck.

NEW UPDATE 1-2024

I read this book when it came out and I have since reread it many times since. I just wanted to add, that besides this author’s constant repetition of the extensive characters backgrounds and talents, the author also kept referencing the year abroad thing that all the seniors at this rich kids high school were mandated into participating in. However, everyone in this senior class was the same age. So if the MMC and his family are the ONLY ones who had the clout enough to flout the year abroad requirement, then the FMC and her friends as well as the side villains would ALL have been out of the country doing there year of independent cultural studies and NOT in the same year as the MMC who was 18 dying/waiting to graduate.

Continuity red flag right there. Smh.

Meh. Ok, sooooooo they can't all be winners..........this one was just a 1/10 Cray Cray than resurrecting the enemy and resisting the enemy.

The angst is a little contrived. Chase (freshman) was in the middle of getting his d!ck sucked when Harper (freshman) came to find him about a school thingie a bobber. He gets mad about it and tells her shes just mad because she's fat and ugly and shell never end up like a trophy wife like other girls 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔😭😂💩

So she goes out and gets her virginity taken (sounds mucho like resisiting the enemy book 6🙄) by someone else and he's mad about it.

There's so much back and forth with her wanting nothing done with him nd him always getting mad. He fights her guy friend who is new to the school and the new guy becomes Harper's best friends bf......this added nothing to the story but okur 🙄🙄🙄

Uhhhhhh I literally just read this book and I'm blanking on what the big angst was....oh yeah! She overhears some dudes saying that chase is with her because of a dare that he wants to be with a fat ch!ck 😒😒😒😒 and the ow Peyton is spreading those rumors. She also pulls chase into kiss when Harper is going to the bathroom and she sees them kissing.

Meh. So much back and forth. It had none of the drama that really makes my heart race and feel teary eyed like the last two next gen books 😣 maybe maddoxs book next will be better? I love the hackers 😏

Chance was lovely! He’s the only one so far that I feel cared for his girl. He tried very hard to show that he loved her instead of just saying that she was his. Although, he did do that too! But in an endearing way.

I’m actually looking forward to Maggie’s book. She’s a badass. Here are some words of wisdom from her.

“Even if he is a dick, Chance loves you,” she stated seriously. “And even if he didn’t, men deserve no less than women when it comes to violating their personal space. She kissed him when he didn’t want her to kiss him, and that makes her just as unworthy as any guy who forces himself on a girl who isn’t interested. Not all predators are men, Harper.”

Excerpts:

Chance looked me up and down, and scoffed, clearly seeing me as beneath him. “Well, of course, you do,” he huffed. “Look at you. It’s not like you have a choice. I seriously doubt that any man is going to be picking you to be his trophy wife.” Everything in me froze. I knew that I wasn’t pretty. I wore glasses and was overweight. I knew that I wasn’t striking with my plain brown hair and brown eyes. I knew that boys didn’t see me as anything special. Still, to hear it confirmed from one of the most gorgeous boys that I had ever met…well, it hit my self-esteem like a sledgehammer to a rundown building that was nothing but a neighborhood eyesore. I took a step back, blinking the tears away, praying that they wouldn’t fall in front of this boy. When I did, something changed in Chance’s expression, and his eyes rounded in…well, I wasn’t sure, but I didn’t care. “Harper, I’m s-” “Forget it,” I rushed out, my voice betraying my wish to appear strong. “I’ll…just forget it.” “Harper-” I turned and fled like a coward, hoping to never have to talk to Chance McCellan again.

***

The problem was that I had hurt the girl in a way that you just couldn’t hurt girls. While females were stronger than men with what they were capable of enduring, knocking down a girl’s self-esteem was unforgivable. I knew this, and that was the reason that I’d never told my parents about what I’d said to Harper that day. My father absolutely adored my mother, and if I’d told him what I’d said to Harper, he would have killed me because my careless cruelty would have broken my mother’s heart.

***

“I spent the entire weekend with her and didn’t see her naked once, Dad.” I could feel my hands begin to shake with maddening regret. “Either the lights were off, or she kept her shirt on, and do you honestly think that I don’t know that I deserve that? As we move forward, do you seriously think it’s not going to tear me up inside whenever she second-guesses the dress she has on? Do you think it’s not going to rip me apart whenever she orders a salad in front of me, instead of a burger? Do you think I don’t realize that I may never know what my wife looks like naked? That she’ll probably lock the bathroom door when she showers, or never put on a bathing suit?” I ran my hands down my face. “Harper is never going to believe me when I tell her that she’s beautiful, or the only one, or even that I love her. Trust me when I tell you that I’m more than paying for what I said to her three years ago, Dad.”

***

Cheating wasn’t done in our family, and though I hadn’t technically cheated on Harper, another girl’s lips on mine had felt close enough. The fact that Payton had tried to violate what I had going with Harper had me hoping that she took a blade to her wrists by the time we were done with her. Another girl had put her hands and lips on me, and I couldn’t believe how disgusted I felt about it. This disturbing feeling gave me a whole new appreciation for women who have been sexually violated before. While I’ve always known that it was wrong, and that those kinds of men didn’t deserve to live, Payton’s audacity had just cemented my opinion on the matter tenfold.

***

“Harper is fat, and wears glasses, and isn’t even pretty!” I had my hand wrapped around Payton’s throat, her body pushed up against the block wall separating the lockers from the emergency fire extinguisher section of the building. “Say one more thing about Harper again and I will fucking ruin you, Payton,” I snarled down at her. “I don’t care whether you agree with it or not, or that you thought this was something more than it was, but I am in love with that girl, and if you ever say another foul word about her again, I will end you.”

***

My plan was to have her follow me to college, get married, have a shitload of kids, then die in each other’s arms when we’re ninety. I wasn’t about to let her fuck my plans up now.

***

“I’m never going to believe that you’re attracted to me,” she went on. “And why would you be?” Her eyes raked over my body in disbelief. “Look at you, Chance? Why on earth would you ever settle for someone like me?” I was in her face as soon as she finished her sentence. Glaring down at her, I said, “I’ve already told you about that shit.” Her brown eyes started to water, and I wasn’t entirely sure why. “I don’t know how to look at you and not see the picture that you painted of me that day reflected back in your eyes.” That nearly sent me to my knees. Taking her face in my hands, I said, “I will regret that for the rest of my life, Harper. I know that doesn’t help you, but it’s the truth. I didn’t mean a word of it. I was younger, stupid, and you had interrupted a blowjob for a school project. I never meant to hurt you. I…” My forehead dropped on hers. “Baby, I’m so fucking sorry.”

***

“You’re going to be the first girl that I’ve ever cum in,” I told her, and her face blushed with embarrassment. “You mean…you want to have sex without a condom?” she asked cautiously. I shook my head. “No. What I mean is that I have never cum inside a girl before, even with condoms.” Her brown eyes blinked with surprise. “I have always pulled out, then jacked myself off into the condom. I’ve never even had a girl swallow. You’re going to be the first girl that I have ever cum in, and you’re insane if you think that I’m going to let you get out of sharing that experience with me.” “No girl in her right mind would ever sleep with you without a condom, Chance,” she whispered, her breath hitching as my hand slid under her shirt. “It’s dangerous.” “I’m as healthy as a horse, baby,” I replied. “And it doesn’t matter how many girls came before you, Harper. You’re the first and only who is going to get the real Chance McCellan in her bed.”

***

Age didn’t mean shit when you found your person, and Harper was my person. As regretful as it was to say, I’ve fucked enough girls in my life to know that Harper was the one. She was the only girl who has ever made me want more than a quick fuck, and that meant something as far as I was concerned.

***

“I’m scared,” I finally admitted, tears making it hard to speak. While I wasn’t on an ugly-cry rant, I was still crying. “I know,” he said. “I know you are, baby, and I take full responsibility for that.” Chance dropped his forehead on mine. “But if you would just trust me, I swear that I will spend the rest of our lives proving you wrong about me, Harper. I just need one more chance.”

***

“I’m sorry, baby,” he said. “I’m so fucking sorry that I…helped that insecurity grow into something that isn’t true. You’re fucking beautiful, and I’m just sorry that I’d been too stupid and immature to see it back then.”

***

“You’re the only one,” Chance said, his hot breath against my neck. “There will never be anyone else for me, Harper. I know it in my soul, baby.”

***

“Growing up in a family like mine, we’re taught something at a very early age. It is my responsibility to take care of you physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually, Harper. My responsibility as a man extends beyond just making sure that you have a roof over your head, food in your tummy, and clothes on your back.” His arms tightened around me. “If you’re not happy, then I’m not being the man that my parents thought they raised.” His lips found the side of my neck, and silent tears coursed down my cheeks. “Believe me when I tell you that nothing matters more to me in this life than your happiness, Harper. I live for you, baby.”

🅾HAAAAARD PASS

⏺H and h have known each other for a few years.
⏺H develops feelings in the timeline of the book , not b4 that.
⏺H is a manwhore.
⏺H has an ALMOST intimate scene with OW at the beginning of the book , the blowjob is interrupted by the h.
⏺The H berates h saying that she's a fat arse and will NEVER end up a trophy wife like the other girls. (Like trophy wife is something to be proud of!?🙄)
⏺The h gets angry at H for saying this and goes and looses her virginity to some other guy.
⏺When the MCs finally get together , they don't cheat , and there is SHIT-LOAD of OW(the name's Peyton) drama , who spread rumors that Chase is with the h because there is a bet going on among his friends as to who will sleep with the fat girl.
⏺Didn't care how it ended.

So the H is a big manwhore and their first altercation together is when she caught him getting head from a random female. He snaps at her telling her she is ugly and will never be a trophy wife. The h, being a bit hefty, is hurt and feels self-conscious. H regrets his words and wants to apologize but she won't have it. After stalking her for several years he makes his move and lays his claim. Of course she just sees him as this manwhore and doesn't trust his intentions. He needs to put in the work to convince her to be together. A jealous friend and some evil gossip almost ruin everything. It was refreshing that this book didn't follow the same Enemy series recipe: where the H fucks up because he is misled.

I thought this book was on the sweeter side in comparison to the rest of the Enemy Series.
The book starts with Chance having already messed up, and the rest of the book is him proving to Harper that he deserves another chance and that he genuinely cares about her. I liked that about this book. There was more groveling and redemption because there was already tension in their relationship.
I also liked that Chance dealt with Harper's insecurities at her pace because he is the cause of them.

CHANCE and HARPER

Chance lost his ‘chance’ with Harper 3 years ago, when he very cruelly commented on her body and her lack of ‘traditional beauty’. Harper who is already conscious of her body and image, hates him ever since, and pretends that he doesn’t exist.

Chance was immediately ashamed of his behavior and wants to apologize but she ignores him and has continued to do so for the past 3 years.

But now its their final year and Chance, who has followed her and learnt every tiny detail about her for the past 3 years is madly in love with her, and he’s a McCellan, who will get the girl.

"You’re the only girl in this entire town who I will not leave alone, Harper.
You’re the only girl in this entire town who is worth chasing. So, if you think that I’m going to let you get away again, you’re very mistaken, baby.”

But Harper doesn’t believe him, she wants nothing to do with him. Chance is a man whore and why would he be attracted to her, after all the things she said.
She will never forget her actions due to his words and what she suffered at his words.

“I don’t care about fair, Harper. I only care about being with you. I only care about making you happy. I only care about you forgiving me. I only care about you.”

But Chance, makes sure he is everywhere she is, he manipulates and becomes her lab partner, is in four of her classes, makes sure he sits next to her every time, crowds her at lunch, even goes head-to-head with her friends when they stand up for her.

We want a good girl that knows when to be bad. And we want to be the only one that she’s bad for.”

But they way he wins her heart is AMAZING... he recites each and everything he has learnt about her from her nail paint, what she eats on particular days, her hair style, her favorite subjects, her academic extra-curricular activities. He knows she wants a puppy; she hates coffee and all the little things that you can only know if you have followed and stalked your love.

But there are jealous forces that want to rip them apart, and Harper believes them due to her insecurities, but Chance will win. He will prove his innocence, clear all misunderstanding, destroy their enemies and get his Harper back.

This story is actually milder that Ramsey Jr’s as well as Dash’s, but no less intense and beautiful!

PS: The scene with Liam McCellan is GOLD!! I love the dynamic, the relationship and it’s just lovely to visit the old characters. The dialogue of his remorse and his realization of harpers issues is heart breaking.
