Michaela Vandehey’s reality show win transformed her from the girl whose own father ignored her into a pop singer loved by the masses. But fame has proven hard to keep. To bolster her floundering career, she heads to Wisconsin to snag a collaboration with the iconic rock band Awestruck. There, she meets bass guitarist Philip, a dad whose devotion challenges her skepticism about love and family.
Whatever faith Philip Miller had died with his wife. Now, “Amazing Grace” is nothing but a lullaby to sing to his children in her memory. Thanks to Awestruck, he can provide privileged lives for his kids, but he has no intention of finding love again. If only he weren’t so drawn to Michaela.
When he falls for her despite himself, Michaela learns the dark secret that threatens his family’s future. The grace they’ve heard so much about might grant them the fresh start they need, but to begin again, they’ll first have to sacrifice what they hold most dear.

Emily Conrad writes contemporary Christian romance that explores life’s relevant questions. Though she likes to think some of her characters are pretty great, the ultimate hero of her stories (including the one she’s living) is Jesus. She lives in Wisconsin with her husband and their energetic coonhound and two lop-eared bunny rescues. Learn more about her and her books at emilyconradauthor.com.
Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits, who forgives all your iniquity who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's Psalm 103:2-5 ESV
First a warning, then my thoughts: Yes, this is a Christian fiction book, and contains things some people may find offensive such as drug & alcohol abuse and mention of past casual sexual relations. Both Philip and Michaela are not Christians at the start of this story....BUT most importantly, it also shows how God can turn a life around when we surrender to His leading, fall as broken people on His love, and just how far His grace extends.
Lord, thank You that we are never, ever too lost for You to find and rescue. (Emily Conrad, author)
This was hard for me to read in many places because I saw the destructive lifestyle one can live outside of God's mercy & grace. When someone chooses to excuse sin & deliberately live a lifestyle that is pleasing to oneself only, it can lead to heartache and regret. Though I've never made the kind of choices Michaela or Philip did, I still did my share of sinning before I became a Christian. So I could relate to how sin can coax, tempt, and how we can crave it over what is good and right.
The character growth in this story was slow at first, but I also understood why the author did it that way. Philip & Michaela have many deep waters to wade through to get to that hard-won happily ever after in both love & life, and I felt the detail was needed to flesh them out. Each layer was peeled back and revealed two very flawed people. Both of them were trying to fill those empty places with things that were temporary, and in the end, still left them wanting. I appreciated Gannon, the band manager, who was not only the voice of reason, but also one who was not afraid to share his faith in God. He was an encourager, the steady presence and the one Michaela often turned to.
Don't put your soul or your peace of mind up for sale, no matter how high they bid. (Gannon)
This is a gritty, raw, poignant redemption story that will hit you in the gut, remind you of the muck God took you out of, and the beautiful life He's given you because of His great love & unending mercy. I think you'll find a picture of two people who desperately needed God to be able to come though the other side of grief, messy pasts, and destructive lifestyles to finally find true freedom and clean hearts to have a bright future. The ending of this story was absolutely beautiful!
The one line that really stood out to me & reminded me of how much God loved me in spite of my past was this:
God's been offering you love this whole time, Jesus died to win you.
*I received a complimentary copy from the author and was not obligated to leave a favorable review. All opinions are mine. *
To Begin Again (# 3 in the Rhythms of Redemption series) is a roller coaster of emotions. Emily Conrad's continuity of characters through out the series helps to bring the books to life. To Begin Again depicts how our relationships and trust in others is challenged internally and externally, where we question everything and many times come up short of ourselves, but never short of God. This book is a journey where you can see the possibilities for Michaela and Philip, where truth is subject to how you spin your story. I wanted to dive into the book and steer the characters toward making good choices and find happiness, but Emily did an amazing job of getting the characters where they needed to be in their time. Just as you think it has ended you find it has only just begun.
A must read. To Begin Again I was privileged to receive an advanced copy from the author.
Emily Conrad has a way of crafting a novel that pulls you in and places you in the shoes of the characters. Philip and Michaela have some deep hurts they're holding onto and that has carved a path they're not sure they even want to deviate from. Two flawed characters who meet and attempt a path to happily ever after. In To Begin Again, they learn what true love means, the Source, and how their lives will change. If you want to see hard subjects handled by with the grace of God, then this series and book is for you. You'll close the book challenged and changed for the better.
*I received a complimentary copy from the publisher. My review was not required nor influenced.
What a heart tugging addition to the Rhythms of Redemption series! If you have read the earlier novels, you will be anxious to know what is going on in bass player Philip’s life. And if you have not read the earlier stories, I believe you could probably jump in and understand the storyline in this novel, you just won’t have as much of a connection with the other band members when they occasionally show up.
To Begin Again delved into the gritty world of fame, but it mostly highlighted the struggles that two people were trying to overcome as they made their way through lives that often left them feeling as if something substantial was missing, regardless of the level of celebrity they achieved.
I felt like I balanced a thin line for the first half of the story between liking the two main characters and being so sad and frustrated for them regarding certain decisions that were made. Both were non believers and their faith journeys were definitely a driving force in the last portion of the book. However, both of these people carried significant hurt with them, which drove their decisions and sometimes destructive behaviors. Both Michaela and Philip were very good at justifying their decisions to themselves, which is something that is very human and relatable.
I really enjoyed this story and loved seeing the change in both Philip and Michaela, even though that change was slow and a long time coming!
(4.5 stars)
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Emily is one of my favorite Christian writers. She writes truth honestly. And this has been the hardest book in the series to read because it dealt with so many painful issues: drug and alcohol addiction, lying, death, talk of casual sexual relations, irregular families, hurting children and dysfunctional people.
This is a story of pride, of the whys of what we do, the reasons we are motivated to do those things and whether what we are doing is worth it.
I love this series. I never thought a series about a band could hold such a draw. I do think the leader of the band, Gannon is the glue, the way he becomes a counselor, mentor, confidant and is a 'tough love' kind of guy.
For Philip and Michaela the lessons learned were that: 1.) Love is what it's all about but it must start with God's love for us and ours for him and 2.) God's timing is perfect.
The song, Amazing Grace was a recurring theme in this book. The lines “ once was lost “ and “saved a wretch like me” were spot on.
I love this series, do not want it to end, but hopefully Tim and Matt will each get their own story!
I was given an advanced copy of this book but the opinions are entirely my own.
To Begin Again is a story that tackles a lot of heavy topics--addiction, single parenting, the death of a spouse, and dysfunctional upbringings, just to name a few. It is also a story about trying to handle all of these challenges on one's own, with little in the way of community and nothing from God, and how soundly our own efforts to do so can backfire. However, "Amazing Grace"--both the song and the reality--are threaded throughout the book, pointing to the hope that truly can be found through faith.
Of the three books so far, this one was the hardest to read, even though its characters' struggles are the ones I can relate to the least. It gets pretty dark at times. Maybe because of this, the romance between Phillip and Michaela seemed less prominent than the romances in the previous two books. It's definitely there, but these two have a lot of ground to cover before they can achieve any sort of stable relationship. Their ending is very hard-won, and, while unexpected, I agree with the author that it is my favorite of the series so far.
I read the first book in this series and wanted to know more about the rest of the characters as well! The author reached out to me and asked if I’d like to review the next books which do tell about the characters I expressed interest in. Of course, I said yes!
So now we find out the story of Michaela and Philip. They’re two flawed people. Neither starts the book as a Christian so do know that there is going to be talks of drugs, sex, abuse, etc. It’s done tastefully and not in a lewd or overly descriptive way, but rather in a way that just brings light to what is going on and some of the sin in their lives that might inhibit them once they become Christians.
There are hard subjects covered here. The whole book is going to hit you in your gut and make you feel all the feels. Honestly, I had so many feelings through this book that I was a bit wrung out when I finished it and needed a bit of time to process what I’d read.
The characters develop slowly at first but then they move quickly and keep you reading. I loved this book and can’t wait for the next installment!
If you’re looking for a theme in this book it is that you can be clean. Think of the hymn Amazing Grace and being washed clean. I highly recommend you read this book but please read the series in order!
Add in two adorable little children (they’re Philip’s) and one woman who is scared a bit from her own past (yeap that’s Michaela) and you’ve got a bit of an extra loop thrown into the story that you’re going to love! I’m all about children!
I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.
To Begin Again is written by Emily Conrad. This is book three in the Rhythms of Redemption series. The series is one that you will not want to miss. One of the things that I really like about this author is how she writes flawed characters. They have issues, baggage, hurt. I always appreciate reading stories that contain real feeling people,
In this story Michaela Vandehey has become an overnight success with her reality show win. She has some baggage dealing with her father who never seemed to notice her. Overnight, she becomes a pop star and suddenly she is noticed by everyone. However, she does not want her 15 minutes of fame to end so she goes to Wisconsin to record with Awestruck.
Philip Miller who is the bass guitarist for the band has lost his faith. He lost it all when his wife died. When he sings "Amazing Grace" to his children, it's nothing more then a song to him. He does not feel the power behind it anymore.
These two broken people are drawn to each other. They seem content with decisions that they have made. Both of our characters are not faith believing and it was good to see how God worked on them throughout the book. The author reminds us that God does all things in his timing, and that timing is perfect. The author also reminds us that we cannot love another fully without loving God first.
This book is so well written. I love how it captured the heartache that goes along with fame. I recently got to know this author through a previous book tour, so I was happy to read another story in her series.
Thank you to the author, for allowing me to read a copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.
To Begin Again is the third book in the Rhythms of Redemption series by Emily Conrad. This can be read as a stand-alone, but I would highly recommend reading the first two books in the series first as each one builds upon the other.
This entire series is absolutely beautiful and heartbreaking all at once, especially this book. The characters are so raw and real that you can feel their pain with them.
Phillip is a widower who is barely keeping it together for the sake of his two small children. He's turned his back on God and puts distance between him and anyone else. Until Michaela comes in and starts knocking down his defenses.
But she's hiding behind a mask of insecurities from her childhood and compromises she's made in order to stay in the competitive pop star world. Phillip and his children give her hope that a loving family is possible.
But, Phillip and Michaela need a lot more than their attraction and hope of a family to mend their broken hearts.
I honestly loved this book so much. I've already gone back and reread the parts that I highlighted. Emily Conrad knows how to write gritty, flawed characters struggling to find their way in life. Amazing grace (not just the song, though it was a big part of this book) and redeeming love are powerfully woven throughout this entire series.
Emily Conrad has crafted one of my favorite series. I have enjoyed all the stories about Awestruck's band members.
Bass player, Philip, is a single dad trying to overcome the loss of his wife to cancer and be everything to his two children. No one has super-human energy and Philip tries to cover his failings and feelings with painkillers. Shattered is his faith in God.
Philip's secret isn't hidden from Michaela who knows a thing or two about the music industry since she won a reality TV show and is clinging to her own stardom and not to God. Re-energizing her career leaves little time for attractive Philip and his darling children, yet she and Philip have a chemistry. if only they would stop long enough to let it grow.
Conrad creates a true-to-life story about the dangers of addiction--to drugs and to fame. When Philip reveals his addiction, Michaela helps him get clean until life gets in the way again.
I enjoyed this pull and tug romance that shows how deep and wide God's love is for each of His children. We also see the wedding of John and Erin.
I can hardly wait to see where Awestruck goes next. A compelling read.
I received an advance copy of this story, but all of the opinions are honest and my own.
To Begin Again by Emily Conrad Rhythms of Redemption Series Book Three After Matt Visser was fired, widower Philip Miller replaced him as the bassist in the band Awestruck. It was a great move. And now that all the members had moved to Wisconsin, Philip had a stable home for his daughter and son. So besides finding the right nanny, it was going well. There was one other issue, but it was something Philip thought he had under control and well-hidden. Michaela Vandehey needed this collaboration with Awestruck to help reach her dream of being on top of the charts with her songs. Gannon had been a mentor for her when she was on the reality show where he was one of the judges. And Michaela had won. But some bad choices had set her career back, and she needed to get ahead again. And, since Philip was the only single member, she decided to cozy up to him to help her convince Gannon to do the duet. They both knew of God but had turned their backs on Him. Philip held it against God for not healing his late wife, Clare, of her cancer. Michaela just liked to be in fame’s light. Such an inspirational series. I love all the stories and characters. https://justjudysjumbles.blogspot.com...
Oh my. Emily Conrad has hit it out of the park again with the latest in her Rhythms of Redemption series! Philip and Michaela are so realistic—flawed humans seeking fulfillment in all the places the world tries to draw us to, when only God can truly provide that fulfillment. The trials, addictions, successes, more failures, and struggles are so realistically portrayed. I alternately was touched, angered, frustrated, and hopeful for them while I rooted for them to come through it all. Even the reactions of the other characters in this book were so on-point to how us humans react to certain situations (trying not to give any spoilers!). Emily Conrad is a skilled author, making her characters so real. I’m greatly looking forward to the next book as well, truly invested in seeing what happens next with Awestruck’s musicians. (Although I had already pre-ordered this book, I was given the opportunity to receive an advanced copy. All opinions I have stated remain my own.)
This story is as beautiful as the cover! Philip and Michaela are not your typical Christian fiction characters who are just meant to be together and only need a little nudge. They have deep struggles and need God to change their lives or they will only be bad for each other. And that’s why this story is so beautiful. God’s love knows no bounds and can reach Philip and Michaela no matter how far they have sunk. Michaela’s character quickly latched on to my heart. Everything inside of me wanted to give her a hug and protect her! Emily is an incredibly talented writer, and her depiction of God’s redemption and grace sings true throughout the entire story. She delivers a love story to root for, characters that touch your heart, and a plot line that pulls you in and makes this book a must read. I received an advance copy from the author, but I loved it so much I also pre-ordered my own physical copy so I can loan it to my friends!
I always enjoy Emily Conrad's novels. To Begin Again touched a special place in my heart because of how tenderly, realistically, and compassionately it deals with the topic of addiction. There are no quick or easy answers to the story problem because addiction doesn't have a quick or easy solution. The characters struggle. Before their faith is rooted in Christ, they make many poor decisions and reap the consequences. Conrad handles the sensitive issues with grace, not letting her characters off too easy but always holding out the message of hope found in Christ. I was eager to read to the end because I needed this couple to find their happily ever after! If you like messy lives, impossible choices, and stories of redemption, you'll love To Begin Again.
*I received an advanced copy from the author. A review was not required.
"In a healthy relationship, both people change in ways they can be proud of."
It was painful to watch Michaela and Philip flounder in their brokenness. I found myself almost wanting to pray for these two fictional characters to step into the arms of the Savior they both ignored.
I suppose that's what makes good Christian fiction. Engaging characters that you can identify with (in some of the broken ways I wish I couldn't) -- characters that become so real you talk about them with your husband over dinner.
"The things the world tries to pass off as love tend to be something else."
This story explores love, ambition, addiction, brokenness and wandering (to name a few) in a compelling way. The ending surprised me in all the good, and realistic, and miraculous sort of ways that happens when we invite God into our story.
Emily Conrad has done it again! With each addition to the Rhythms of Redemption series, I say to myself, "Okay, I think this is my favorite!" To Begin Again features a flawed hero and heroine that honestly aren't all too lovable in the beginning, making it a romance we can all relate to with our own sins and shortcomings. But both Philip and Michaela have redeemable qualities, and with some artful character development, I couldn't help but root for them to help each other overcome doubts, insecurities, shame and strongholds.
Doing what she does best, Conrad tackles some subjects many authors shy away from. This third book in the series is a raw and honest story that deals with addiction, death, grief, doubt, and difficult medical diagnoses. Yet each of these issues are addressed gently, carefully and, most of all, full of hope.
I received an advance copy from the author, and have pre-ordered copies for the other Emily Conrad fans in my life. My opinions and review are entirely my own.
I tried to love this book featuring Philip and Michaela but just didn’t love it like the other three. From the start, both people had such large issues to overcome that I couldn’t see them ever righting things in the span of one book. I was glad to see at the end they allowed time to pass so they could feasibly end up together, but both of their conversions happened so suddenly that it didn’t feel real or likely. To me, I would have rathered they focus on Philip’s addiction and the band. Since it had been such an issue with Matt in the first book, it was weird to me that they seemed to gloss over things once it came out. Maybe it was too much for one book. Regardless, I’m excited for the final book about Matt!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This is the toughest book of the series. The focus here is on Philip, the bass guitarist for the band who walked away from his faith after his wife died leaving him with two small children. Michaela is an up-and-coming pop star who has no faith and has made bad choices to promote her career.
Most readers can identify with some of what Philip and/or Michaela are struggling with - addiction, career advancement choices, anger with God, grief, child-rearing questions. Money in a bank account can't help with these types of issues, and the author handles them with a deft hand.
Family friendly, though some themes may be difficult for some readers. I enjoyed this book and would highly recommend the series to everyone.
To Begin Again is the forth book in the Rhythms of Redemption series, although it’s labelled third with the addition of 1.5 focusing on Philip, the bassist for Awestruck and Michaela, a pop star struggling in the world that comes with fame. Conrad’s written a powerful, messy romantic story with flawed characters that grow as they face their struggles. I just love this series and the messages woven through the storylines. "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. Psalm 103:2-5, ESV"
Emily Conrad keeps luring you in with her stories on each of the band members of Awestruck. Each story makes you wanting to know more about each character and drawing you into their personal struggles. This 3rd book Michaela is searching for love through fame not realizing that it is only God who can fill the void in her heart. Philip is fighting his demons of being a widower with 2 kids who need him but but feels like he keeps failing them while hiding a secret addiction hoping not to get caught. Neither one of them feel worthy of love and redemption. Read more to see how they let go of their preconceived thoughts of live and acceptance. I can't wait to read more.
This is Book 3 of the Rhythms of Redemption series. Philip is a band member of Gannon’s group Awestruck, and Michaela is a pop music start. He’s not really looking for new love since he’s still recovering from his wife’s untimely death, and she has family issues a mile deep. Addiction is a big player in this story. Since addiction has been a huge problem in my life too, this story resonated more deeply with me than any of the other books in the series. I was rooting for these two characters even though their problems persisted throughout the book.
Wow, what a rollercoaster ride! The two main characters, Philip and Michaela, sure take us on one. Between their pasts they are troubled with, current issues that are life changing and personalities that sometimes make you cringe, this is a ride! For God, nothing is hard, but you certainly feel like He had to work hard with these two. The emotions in Philip's story run rampant, so strap yourself in and get ready to ride. I received an advance copy from the author as well as preordering a copy of my own to read again and share.
I’ve loved every book in this series and each of them were emotional reads but this is the one that brought on the most tears. I ended this book still in tears. It was so moving. It’s probably my new favorite. (Lina and Matt’s story was my first favorite-I read that one out of order. To be fair, I love all the couples of Rhythms of Redemption so choosing a favorite now that I’ve finished the series was hard!)
I’m going to be honest here and say I really did not like these characters at all! However, I’m glad I kept reading because I liked them much better in the end and the transformation they both went through was powerful, especially Philip. This wasn’t my favorite book in the series, but it was good and I adored the children!
I overall enjoyed this book but still wanted more out of it. It got deeper than I thought it would which I liked, but I wish their had been more happy moments as well. It felt like they were small and very few. Loved the ending and how it was ultimately about God!
4.25🌟 this book deals with heavy topics like substance abuse, death and cancer. Phillip and Michaelas story wasn't an easy one. it dealt with heartbreak and navigating through it all.
