The summer was supposed to be a reset. A chance to fix the mess I made by allowing my past to control my present.
I was supposed to finally find a way to heal my broken pieces.
But, like everything else in my life, expectation is far from reality.
When my plans are shaken up in the form of five incredibly attractive men, I can’t be too upset. They help me to see that my trauma doesn’t define me. Like there is more to me than just surviving.
While their friendship confuses me, there is something more there I can’t quite figure out...
Gray is the one. Their one. Their fated mate. But circumstances keep Rip, Reid, Mitch, Dean, and Chance from being upfront about their connection with the beautiful girl who has stolen their hearts. Every day is a fight to keep from taking what is theirs, no matter the cost. But how long can they really hold back when their souls burn for hers?
Waiting to Ignite is book one in a slow burn new adult fantasy romance series with multiple love interests. Gray has a lot to learn about who she is and where she really comes from, but first she has to survive the summer and the intriguing guys who guest star in her dreams at night. Not to mention someone, or something, has a special interest in her as well, and they aren't looking to date her.
3.5 stars! I enjoyed this book; however, I would have liked more of a plot that related to why Gray was special and her destiny. The high school drama overshines the paranormal aspect almost becoming repetitive. Grey and the guys had 'electric' chemistry that I would like to see explored more in the next book. Reid's character was by far my favourite. That being said I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
This was the worst book I have read this year. Actually it started of good: The Prologue is a glimpse into another realm, where six men meet with a seer to hear about destiny. The seer tells them, that the princess will have a girl who will rescue this and other realms. They are overheard by the princess and a spy, who works for the bad guys.
Then it turns into urban fantasy and I am using the term more general because actually very little UF like happens until the end. The whole book is about Gray (and believe me in-between I could not remember the name of the FMC, even though it is unusual). She is raised in our realm. She has a backstory which she refers to before she was rescued three years ago by her grandmother where we know that she was abused in any way possible. But even though she made it through this time in the system, she is a happy girl and the author has to refer to the abuse to remind us of the though time. She lives with her grandmother and her younger brother, who was equally abused in the system.
In summer school she meets five guys who she actually likes and have feelings for. They are her guardians and boyfriend to be from the other realm. She also meets a human guy. All of them are of course build, gorgeous and all the stereotype descriptions you can come up with if you read some rh books. Also the author starts stereotyping the guy, one wants to spank her and one needs to be in command and so on.
While the five guys have to wait until she ignites to tell her anything we already see that this book is now about relationship drama. Five guys want the girl but are not allowed to make a move because of the prophecy and the human guy makes a move.
And at the end the house she lives in goes up in flames, her brother and grandmother are trapped inside. Her grandmother dies, Gray ignites and saves her brother and end of story.
Even though I wrote some short summery here the story was stereotyping the guys, had a strange FMC, with an abuse background and suddenly her hormones are interested in six guys and she never had therapy? Not really believable. Also the drama was very constructed. So no I really did not like the book, and I really should have just returned it to kindle and be done with its without finishing it.
Ok, I loved parts of this book but others were tougher for me to read. Gray is the main character and I love the five guys that she belongs with. I also love Finn, her boyfriend she meets while she means her five guys. I just didn’t enjoy the pain the guys felt while she was with the boyfriend. I think the author did too good of a job making me fall in love with the main group. I think my issues with the book are more my own issues with not liking her being with someone else when she has a harem who want her. I still want to read the next in the series, I’m just hoping the plot line with her harem is a little more defined with less pain in book 2. Heck, I’ll take her getting the boyfriend and the harem. #whychoose
I really enjoyed this book but at the same time had quite a bit of trouble getting into it. I’m not really sure what was wrong as sometimes the story sucked me in and sometimes I felt myself skimming it at times. I’ve been in a bit of a book slump so it could have just been me.
The one major problem I had with Grey at times was how oblivious she could be when it came to the guys. Especially considering her past I feel like she would be more in tune to how the guys felt. I’d really like to see more development of her character later in the story. Now, the guys are just smoking and I absolutely love their characters as well as the insight we get sometimes. I’d definitely like to hear and learn more about the guys world as we never really hear anything about it so it’s confusing to say the least.
I’m excited to see where book 2 takes us and hopefully we get more knowledge about the guys world too.
This was a uniquely different fantasy story. I loved the characters and world building. It’s a slow burn so don’t expect steam but it for sure has the sexual tension that makes you want to scream at the FMC. I can’t wait to read more.
This was such a great debut novel!!! Gray is my complete girl crush I absolutely adore her! And lord help us the men in her life are straight fire 🔥 like damnnnn could they be any hotter! Chance is probably my favorite just because he’s so dang broody and was being such a pain in the @ss. The guys are great and watching them hurt really was a punch to the gut. We got a glimpse of what Gray and Charlie went through in their younger years and it literally had tears streaming down my face. I can’t wait for the next book in this series I need to know what happens!
This actually started off pretty good. I was interested in the fmc and ready to get to know the guys. There is a lot of telling about the day to day, or micro details of a scene. I skimmed a lot of the story after about 46% and contemplated different at abt 64%. I made it through but probably won't continue. I kinda don't like Gray and the guys' actions are weird. Throw in another love interest outside the harem and it just rubbed me the wrong way. I literally cringed at their sences together and skimmed whole characters re them. Didn't miss anything because nothing really happens in the story. There were personality shifts that didn't make sense and overall just didn't enjoy it.
Let me start by saying this is a good boo. However, one issues kept bugging me. The guys are supposed to be 17 when Gray is born but then they talk about being in the shifter wars 80 years ago. I had a hard time getting past 34 year old men acting like teenagers and lusting over a 17 year old girl for most of the book. Once I just decided to ignore that and pretend they were her age it was easier to deal with.
The guys were good and I like Gray. I very much wish there had been more information about their realm though.
I'm conflicted about this book. The author did a good job setting the foundation of the story but I also thought it was a bit too wordy. ( At least 100 pages could have been shaved off the page count. ) Even though it was close to 700 pages, and despite the alternating POVs, I didn't really feel like I got to know the guys in the book. It was interesting that the FMC had a boyfriend but I still wasn't a huge fan of that turn of events. Will most likely read the next book in the series.
(DNF @~55%) Well, I had a review written, but God forbid I switch tabs for a second without the page on the Goodreads app resetting itself when I go back to it. My original review has disappeared and I wish this book would, too, and now I'm even more irritated with the time I wasted on this crap. I'm sorry to the author, but this was just awful; it was incredibly painful to read and it needs a LOT of cleaning up. Every page was full of very cringey writing and awkward dialogue, made even more awkward by the lack of contractions.
Some things in here made me think this was published back in the early 2000s, but I was startled to find out that this was published in 2021. Are you sure? Maybe this was written 10 years ago but it was only published a few years ago with no editing. Do teenagers really still say "amazeballs" with a straight face? And why did one of the guys have a haircut that sounded like a "Karen"/emo combo? --"His hair was even blacker than mine falling to his chin in the front [f]ading around to a shorter crop in the back."
Am I just reading that wrong? I don't think that's in style for any gender or age group in the 2020s, except for a few middle-aged white women who are very determined to keep that cut. More power to them, but I still think that haircut is incredibly misplaced on a very masculine guy with an obnoxiously muscular body.
I hated the heroine, too, especially her body-betraying syndrome coming into play pretty early on. From where I stopped reading, she'd just had a flashback/nightmare about people coming into her room at a past foster home and they were presumably about to assault her when she woke up. Then she hears one of the guys singing and is suddenly narrating about her panties melting or something as if that intense PTSD nightmare hadn't just happened. No. Just stop.
There was also way too much inner dialogue that was hard to muddle through and I just couldn't get a read on her character, even halfway through the book. Maybe the author was going for a more realistic, multi-dimensional character, but it did not work in this case. Fix yourself, girl.
Excellent book - amazing debut novel and a really great start to the series!
I was absolutely hooked. Grey has so much depth and an amazing (and sad) back story for a 17 year old. All of the guys in her “harem” are also incredibly unique and well developed and we really fall for them all throughout this first book.
Unfortunately, the boys aren’t allowed to let Grey know anything about their real history or herself or it will ruin everything they are working towards, no matter how desperately they want or feel the need to, and they have to keep their hands to themselves. It’s killing them, watching her flirt with another guy!
Based on this, and the book description (series description), I can’t wait to see what is to come as this is a reverse harem situation and she is destined to “be with” all five of these incredible, god-like specimens! I sure hope there is a lot of steam ahead!!
Spoiler alert - the ending is a little bit of a cliffhanger and there is something big that happens, so when you get there, be prepared!
I really liked the story, and the guys. I was irritated from time to time about how oblivious Gray seemed towards how the boys acted towards her, but could get over it. Nearing the end, I got a bit frustrated because I don’t feel like I know a lot more about the world and plot than I did in the beginning. The guys were nicely worked out, they all really felt as different people with different personalities, which is always a win for me! The writing is easy to read and I didn’t really notice many mistakes (maybe sometimes a little word here and there) that made it into the final. I’m definitely buying the sequel because I’m superinvested and want to see where the story goes.
I absolutely loved this book!! Gray and her brother Charlie live with their Grams. Their mother died when they were little and their dad abandoned them. After being in the foster system for years, their Grams finally finds them and takes them in. She loves them and does all she can to help them. Not to mention, for a grandmother, she's feisty as hell! Lol Gray meets the guys - Rip, Reid, Chance, Mitch and Dean - during summer school. She becomes a part of their group and they all grow into a unique dynamic; as a group and individually. Watching them get to know each other, seeing how they all interact and compliment each other was absolutely amazing. And talk about a cliffhanger?! I cannot wait for book 2!! Kudos EJ!! You hit this one out of the park!!
Waiting to Ignite is book 1 in a series, and ends with a slight cliffhanger.
I always love a good fantasy book, and hidden secrets are so fun to unravel. I was immediately hooked on Gray. She is a relatable character, easy going, bored by summer school(who wouldn’t be?). When she meets 5 hot guys, she doesn’t know what to think. They act protective, and flirt, but yet, they stay away.
There are so many GREAT things about this book. The guys, the other people around Gray, and how they act, so many things happen that make me curious and suspicious.
Then, the heat. While this book is a slow burn, whew, the burn is still there. There are scenes that will still make you fan yourself, even when there is no more than kissing in this book, which has a purpose, too. While this book was YA in print, the undertone is there for NA, the potential to steam the pages QUITE evident. Makes me anticipate what the author has prepared for the future books!
Amazing debut novel, I’m looking forward to seeing everything in the future!
Story 📖: 4.5/5 addictive, definitely a must read Heat 🔥: 2/5. Only a few kisses shared, however the hints from the flirtation is there for major flames Darkness 🖤: 3/5. There are things Gray has experienced that aren’t explained, plus there are hints to evil lurking, ready to strike.
Love that this book is long as I'm a fast reader. It is very well written. Amazing story of Gray and how she meets guys at summer school. Her grandmother wants her grades higher so sents her of. She is awkward due to living in foster homes earlier because her grandma couldn't at the time. At summer school she meets 5 guys, Reid, Rip, Chance, Dean and Mitch. She is important to them but they can't tell her. They are waiting for her to come into her powers but it's getting very difficult. Awesome book that took me by surprise. Happy I've read it and can't wait for book 2.
Loved it! Absolutely brilliant book, and a fantastic build up to Gray joining her harem. I found it hard to read when she fell for Finn, not realising she has 5 guys who are destined for her I felt all of their pain watching the woman they are destined to be with in the arms of another, and I was torn because Finn is just so nice!!! I think it would be easier if he was horrible! The ending was filled with devastation and relief, I cant wait to see how Gray gets on in book two when she realises the guys are meant for her.
Wow! First off let me say that this was incredible! The characters were so well written and built up that you felt like you were right with them. I am obsessed with even the side characters. You just fell for all of them, it was beautifully done. The storyline thou slow burn had so much heat that I was sweating lol. I adored everything about it and can't wait for book two to catch up with Gray and the guys!!
This book was wonderful I didn't want to put it down. Great debut book by the author and a fantastic start to a series. Grey(FMC) is just starting to come into her own but is still strong because of surviving past experiences. Her guys are all unique and I feel we will find out much more about them. The supporting characters are wonderful too. Can't wait for book two so I can find out what happens next.
A coming of age urban fantasy story, about a girl destined for greatness and waiting for a cosmic event to unlock her powers and allow her to be with her chosen 5 (soul)mates. The mc - Gray had been through a lot, and her story is drip fed throughout the book, which is nice. It feels like we are being slowly allowed to get to know her and her pain. The magic hinted at throughout the book is tantalising spare, hopefully there will be more of that to come in later books. The guys are lovingly named the god squad and I can certainly understand stand why, I’m looking forward to learning more about them, as I feel there could be huge story potential.
Imagine that your entire life you’ve been hidden for a greater purpose. But...during this...you suffer from the worst of humanity’s depravity. Gray is special. She just doesn’t know it yet.
She’s a Princess of another world, meant to save it and change her world for the better. 5 men are asked to be on the look out, wait for her , look for her. They’ve found her but there are rules to how they can approach her. The rules are : no kissing, no sex, and they can’t tell her the truth or they will never bond with her.
So...how do they get to keep her ?
Y’all this book is super slow burn but EJ can do something with words that makes you squeeze your thighs together and feel heat for days. I can’t wait for the next book!
I loved every second of this book. There was little to no steam, but that's okay because it totally fits the plot and the characters and makes the emotions that much more important. 🥺🤍 I don't usually read books that don't have steam, but this one. So. Worth. It. If you're looking for a really good storyline, this is definitely a good choice for you. 💯👌
MC says she is a loner who doesn’t like crowds and is freaked out by people… then almost immediately is totally fine and acting flirtatious with a bunch of guys she met yesterday. Felt rushed and lacked any impact it was trying to make. It had a lot of wrong info about summer school and how it is run which strangely bothered me. She is surprised when others are not sexually active when she explains hers was from trauma. Her trauma didn’t seem to impact her much and as much as she talked about her brother she only spends time with him twice and both times she invites her friends to join, very selfish. Getting the guys prospective was frustrating because they are supposed to be way older and had to wait longer yet they have no patience and expect her to act a certain way with them then storm off when she doesn’t. The only actually good character was Finn until he was written off over drama he didn’t even do. Also what was that last chapter? It took a major left turn into the magical in a negative way.
One of the best books I have read. I can’t wait for the next book to come out to see what happens next. I feel in love with all the characters. I can’t decided who I want her to end up with! The story just pulls you in and I couldn’t put the book down until I was finished.
Awesome start to the series!!! You won't want to put this book down once you start. The characters have a way of pulling you in and making you love them. This slow burn will have you begging for more. Can't wait for book 2!!!!
I loved this book. Gray is a special girl that has had a hard life. She has to go to summer school and ends up meeting her sexy men. She is shy and not very good with people. This is a story to read. Can't wait for book 2.
This book is well written and has a wonderful plot about a young woman who has survived so much pain and suffering just to end up in... summer school?! Luckily she meets 5 new friends who adopt her into their little group. Five very very attractive male friends who make her skin tingle when they touch her. What is going on?! This book takes on the viewpoint of Gray, the main protagonist, but we also get a few glimpses through the eyes of her five male companions. So many questions. So many answers. So many more questions to be answered in future books! I am an impatient but diehard fan after the first book in the series. Read for yourself and see the realms at work.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Not a book I usually read but I must say I couldn't get enough of it, yes it's a slow paced but I thought very sensual as everything was based on looks and words I cant wait for more of Gray and her non harem. I voluntarily reviewed this book.
Omg is all I’ve got to say about it! I won’t spoil it for others but I will say this- boom 2 needs to hurry and get in my possession! I can’t fathom having to wait any longer than the 3 minutes I just spent stating at the last sentence of book one. I need to know what happens next! Amazing read!
So overall, I liked Gray and the book, but I’m the end I was left feeling like this was a long prequel and we get introduced to the characters but don’t get any answers. I’m intrigued by Gray, Fin, Rip. Reid, Mitch, Chance, and Dean. If/When she has to leave to go to the other realm, I hope she somehow gets to take Charlie, Finn, Tanner, and Leanne. I also didn’t like that the 5 guys couldn’t really talk to her, and the pain that this led to for everyone. I am invested and intrigued enough that I will be watching for book2, but I really hope we get more answers.
