QUIET, PRETTY THINGS [2022] By Megan Stockton
My Review 5.0 Stars Out Of 5

I became a fan of newcomer Megan Stockton after reading her most talked about novella “Bluejay”. Subsequently, I have purchased and read several of her works to include this one. Stockton states that she wishes more readers knew about this book released in early 2022. It is an incredibly dark and riveting crime thriller, certainly not in the same vein as her prior books that I have read and lavishly praised. I was surprised that Amazon has only 41 Global Ratings (4.5 Stars), but more surprised that this novel has only 66 ratings on Goodreads with a matching 4.5 Star average.

The author is right. More readers need to not only know about this book, but to read it! In this outing, Stockton showcases her extraordinary versatility and range. Megan Stockton moves seamlessly and flawlessly among the genres, writing Extreme Horror-Splatterpunk to high octane crime suspense thriller to refreshingly original occult horror tales. Her narrative style is beautiful, poetic at times, but is invariably addictive and riveting.

In the small community of Whitebranch they make the startling discovery that a serial murderer is walking among them. In this unusual serial killer thriller, the reader is privy to the first-person perspectives of the two senior detectives, their newest enthusiastic recruit who is still learning on the job, and also through the eyes of the coroner who has functioned as a forensic medical examiner for the police department. The author also dedicates entire chapters to the sociopath they are desperately trying to stop.

The Whitebranch Chief of Police is named Pat Welch, and she is in somewhere in her fifties. Significantly, Pat gives free reign to her admittedly seasoned Detectives.

The two experienced detectives are long-time partners and friends, David Polanski and Quentin Robichaux. The thing is…as people say…both of these two veterans of the police department knew that they were dealing with a serial offender when a dead girl is found with a game piece on her body. An unsolved murder of a girl six months prior had a similar calling card. While the detectives speculate about it being a fluke or a coincidence, or hey, maybe it was the work of a copycat since the information about the game piece had been released to the press.

The two veterans and their young inexperienced rookie soon wake up to the unpleasant reality that they are all clueless with no leads and a body count that is spiraling out of control.

It is when the POV shift to the perpetrator that the reader feels the discomfort and disorientation of seeing through the eyes of a sexual predator. “Rion” is his name, but the reader instinctively feels like that it is not his given birth name, but rather some kind of made-up moniker. “Rion” feels that he is omnipotent, and in total control of the “game”.

Deen Paltro, the unquestionably astute and intuitive Medical Examiner must point out to the investigating detectives that the lack of penetration did not mean that the murders were not sexually motivated.

“It’s always sexual…The girls were all strangled, suffocated. There’s a climax to asphyxiation.” “Just because there isn’t always penetration doesn’t…”

Robichaud cut off the input from Deen immediately, and belligerently. He half-yelled that he did not need to know (what Deen had to say). He just wanted to know the killer’s motive. What made him tick? The third victim on the autopsy table was Ji-Su, the friend of Detective Polanski’s young daughter.

Paltro was aware that the young new recruit was smart, analytical and creative. Torres asked the Medical Examiner pertinent questions, and he wanted to provide input into the investigation…. if only Robichaud would refrain from belittling him and shutting him out at every turn. It was at this juncture that it became all too clear that the killer was stalking the lead investigator (Robichaud). The detective made it clear in the morgue that he was more than eager to play the killer’s “game”.

Quinten (Robichaud) fully believes that it is he who must play (and win) the serial killer’s “game”. His ego is all-encompassing and deadly to everyone around him, his co-worker’s, his family, but most of all to the string of young women who would pay the ultimate price for Quentin’s complete lack of intuition and insight. It is difficult to digest that the cop is seeing a therapist for heaven’s sake. His long-suffering, ignored wife Emily loves him, but similarly suffers from his absence, both his physical absence when he is literally not there, but conversely his distance from her when he is physically standing beside her.

The serial murderer we know as “Rion” spends time before mirrors attempting to perfect the facial expression which would signify concern, harmlessness, but fails to convey or project anything benign from his “flat and lifeless” (might have been black) soulless eyes.

The senior detective Robichaud is clueless about any commonalities between the girls and no concerted effort is made to investigate this potential angle. The medical examiner Paltro has some dark secrets of his own and he shares with Robichaud that it is something about the eyes that draws in the predator. There was something subliminal, a vulnerability that the killer was able to see.

The most memorable part in the book to me was the conversation between the rookie and the big man Detective Quinten Robichaud. The young guy wants to talk about what everyone is calling “The Wildflower Murders”. Torres (“Lucas” but Robichaud did not know the rookie’s first name…and that hurt him the most) was outspoken, candid, frank, and even argumentative. Torres pleaded with Robichaud to call in some expert help, the state police or the FBI. Robichaud kept reiterating the (serial killer) is nothing new, just a killer, just a man, and he would make a mistake. Torres’ pleas and solid arguments fell on deaf ears. Torres tells him:

“He’s leaving a trail of dead women and we’re just following along behind him. So do you get it? Or do you just not give a f---, Robichaud?”

This has to be the most disturbing serial killer thriller I have ever read, and it will be remembered, Robichaud uses the press to get to the killer, but the approach backfires and “Rion” escalates and implodes. The Chief of Police knows she gave Robichaud the rope and he hanged her with it, in addition to all of those who died…

Ultimately, Rion’s psyche fractures and the girls with the flowers commence to haunt him relentlessly. Robichaud comes for him. Their confrontation will be impossible to forget.

Finally, this is one of those novels where had it been a group read that feedback would have been great. In my mind it was about the sin of pride. “Quiet, Pretty Things” was among the most disturbing serial killer novels I have ever read. The bleakness of the end was like evil was a dark shape toasting the fallen Rion and Robichaud. The writing is sinfully sharp and incisive and the message etched clear to the reader. The novel deserved five stars for its terrible trip into desperation and hopelessness.

Quiet, Pretty Things is written from both a serial killer's perspective and the detectives searching for him.
I really enjoyed the book; I just wish it was written totally from the killer's POV. His mind was twisted and interesting. I could have played in that dark pool for much longer. The cops really didn't do it for me.
This is my second Megan Stockton book. Lovely, Dark & Deep is one of my favorites of the year, and I'm excited to read more of her work.

Suspenseful & Intense!

Small backstory:

The town of Whitebranch has been hit with bodies of women turning up dead with puzzle pieces found on their bodies as it seems a serial killer is stalking the town. As detectives race against time to track down the killer they are hoping that they are able to catch him before they have more bodies piling up!

That is about all I can give on a small backstory without giving away spoilers so if you want to know more then go read this book!

Thoughts:

This book just blew me away as I love a great detective/police procedural story and each chapter was for a character in the story which centers around the detectives trying to solve the case and there are also chapters of the killer with his thoughts as well.

Everything meshed together perfectly and I loved the characters as well. I felt that the author just grabbed me and threw me into the story as I could feel everything that the detectives did as they were trying to track down the killer. The visuals of what was unfolding in the story was just laid out as I could see it all in front of me like it was on a movie screen.

This was my first time reading this author and it won't be my last as I loved this book which will be going on my favorites shelf. Giving this book five "Thriller Chiller" stars!

I read Megan’s book, Bluejay, and absolutely loved it and her writing style. I also got to hear her gross out story at authorcon, which was amazingly disgusting and repulsive, but ultimately my favorite one of the night. This book was nothing like the two short stories just mentioned, but just as amazing, and shows her range of writing skills and talent.

The main characters were very well done and I got to know each of them as the pov changes between them. First we are introduced to the Quinton, who is my favorite character. He is an an average detective with an average life and far from any hero I’ve ever read about. Then we meet the serial killer Rion, who likes quiet, pretty things. It’s a wild and fun cat and mouse game throughout the entire book.

A fantastic read, great storyline, wonderful characters, and a ride that keeps you so engaged from the beginning until the very end.

I listened to this on audible, and the narrator was wonderful and kept me engaged throughout.

NOTE - while searching for a photo of the cover for the audible version, I noticed there is a movie! I will definitely be giving it a watch soon!

Amazing Read!

I finished this book a few days ago and have been sitting with it and just processing it since then. I feel like there's no way I can really do it justice with this review, but I'll make my best attempt. What I noticed most about this book is how realistic the characters felt. I could feel their emotions and understand their motivations. Several characters came to feel like old friends, which made some parts of the book even more brutal and devastating. It was the little details that I felt really added to the authenticity of this novel. Tidbits such as over-enthusiastic spaghetti eating, or annoyance at a murder victim who just won't stop making noise, really brought out the nuances of the characters.

Megan Stockton has created an enormous amount of tension within this novel. So much so that I caught myself starting to nibble my fingernails - I habit I kicked more than 20 years ago! The cat and mouse game between the murder and the detectives was perfection! I have already grabbed myself copies of all of her other work, and cannot wait to read them. I cannot recommend this book enough. Do yourself a favor and read this! You can thank me later.

This is my 1st book by Megan Stockton and it wont be the last. Quiet, Pretty Things is serial killer/cop thriller that intrigues from the beginning and doesn’t ever let up. The character development is fantastic, as you follow the story from the view of the psychopath, as well as a few of the cops. You’ll empathize for the victims & cheer for the poor cops who seem horribly outmatched as the deaths come fast and furious with very few clues provided. There is a great cat and mouse game taking place all while the killer devolves. Stockton doesn’t hold back either, she will piss you off with a few emotionally gutting scenes. Recommended reading for sure.

Lordy, Lordy this book ends with a bang. This story flows so smoothly and heartbreakingly. The characters are very well written, both the protagonists (who are not perfect super cops, but much more real and vulnerable), and the bad guy (who is a Ted Bundy type of charming, unexpected serial killer), From beginning to end this is a riveting and compulsive read. Very good.

First read of 2023!!
Can we please talk about this book written by Megan Stockton?!?! 🤯🤯🤯

A small town, a line of murders, and full blown mystery, detective work, & absolutely hands down the best damned book I had read!!

She captivated every character, every aspect, every detail all the way down to game pieces and these emotions that the officers, the victims, the killer felt!

I can’t wrap my head around this book and I’m literally…in awe and gasping on what else to say, other than, if this is not on your list to read, you need to move it IMMEDIATELY!!

- I read this as an ARC from the author. My thoughts and opinions are all my own and not influenced by whether I paid for the book or not-.

I adored this book from beginning to end. In fact, when I finished it I was highly tempted to turn back to the beginning and start over. The characters weren't perfect, they were flawed as we all are. The POV switches are well done, the story line is unique, and it is definitely one of my favorite murder mystery books! Will definitely reread

Knockout ride!

I cannot say enough about how good this book is. The entire plot & the way it was written from different character's points of view is something I love. She really wasted no time getting the action going while simultaneously introducing the characters.

Her characters had a certain special something that I don't come across very often. I'm used to reading books where the characters are relatable and you really feel for them. This was altogether different. She got their thoughts down in such a way that you felt like you WERE them. You felt their frustration, their excitement, their relief, their fear, their love, their pain, their resignation, their desperation, even their madness. It was an amazing experience.

Watching her plot unfold from each character's perspective was done oh so well. Even I was frustrated at times and wanted to yell at certain characters. I can't say about what. I'd hate to spoil the surprises. There were no holes, no strings to tug on. She wrapped everything up beautifully.

And once she floored it, she didn't let up. I could almost feel where things were headed yet I wasn't quite sure. And I wasn't wrong.......but I wasn't right either. She took me to the dark side of humanity. A side that's maybe inside all of us under the right circumstances. I was nearly breathless by the end of the book.

This will not be my last read by Stockton. Her work is superb.

If you don't know who Stockton, you must not be following Indie Horror because this woman is EVERYWHERE! I had to see why she was so popular, this story wasted no time at all in answering the popularity inquiry, she is a great writer. I found myself really enjoying the first 80% or so, but as it progressed towards the ending I felt it derailed a bit and the ending felt rushed and a little anti-climactic for me. I also didn't get the resolve I was hoping for regarding two things happening in the book, but cannot go into them here without spoilers. I felt there were some really nice Horror segements in here, with one of them referencing Doubting Thomas that was absolutely brutal and stands out to me. The authenticity of the killer and how he operated, plus the research the author put into the realisticness of effects on a corpse were imperative touches that also did this one a solid. Overall, a good tale, I'm very interested to see Megan's other wares.

The audio portion of this was narrated by David Hull who really brought the book to life I thought. I couldn't help but picture Duane Jones (Ben from the original Night of the Living Dead) when listening to the narrator's voice which added in a fun dynamic for me since it is my all time favorite film!! I really loved how he did the radio segments which is one of the things that sold me for NotLD as well too, ironically enough. He did a great job with this one. I could sit and listen to him all day.

I mean, this book was amazing!
Starting from the fact that one of the main characters is a serial killer which is always a bonus for me!

The story is very entartaining, keeping the reader wanting to keep going. This is also cleverly done through the use of different point of views that helps the reader having a clear timeline and putting the pieces together without seeming forced.

I particularly liked the complexity of the characters with their faults and emotions which is not usual, as we generally see only one angle of the actors in serial killers stories. These are people which are very relatable and beautifully portrayed by the author.

There are several twists along the way which I didn't expect given we have all point of views along the story. And the ending is truly jaw dropping, so satisfying and frustrating at the same time which is testament to how good Megan Stockton is! Comparable to a Shakespearian tragedy really!

I listened to the audiobook version and it was really good, and a truly immersive experience at times!

The author was so kind to give me the audiobook code and this is my honest review.

In a small town, a handful of detectives investigate a series of murders where the killer's calling card is a floral tile from a matching game.

This is not a police procedural, nor does it fit into any standard mold of a thriller/suspense/crime novel. This is set apart from all of that. What sets it apart is the fantastic character development. These characters are so real, you feel like you know them. You feel what they feel which makes the tension of the story all the more palpable.

Dive deep into the mind of a serial killer, if you dare. He is sinisterly charming which makes him all the more terrifying. This book will make you want to purchase something for self defense and make you a little more distrustful of strangers, especially the unassuming ones.

I can't say too much for fear of giving anything away that makes this book so special and superb. You will just have to pick it up and read it for yourself. It will chill you to your bones and haunt you long after you close the final page.

Thrillers and mysteries are not what I have been drawn to lately. However, this is definitely an exception. Fast paced and intricately executed, Quiet, Pretty Things is a masterful entry into the thriller genre. As always, Megan writes deep and engaging characters and that is what drives the story. This book doesn't rely on twists to keep the reader interested. You come to care about these characters and their plight. The fact that one of the POV's is the killer, makes the dynamic between them and the detectives even more impactful.

One thing Megan is never afraid to do, is kill off main characters. People that would normally be safe in another author's thriller, do not have that same luxury when Megan is telling the tale. No one is safe! The suspense created by realizing that any character could be taken out next is phenomenal. This is not so much a spoiler in my opinion, as it is a warning. Do not get complacent while reading this book.

Highly recommend, but be prepared, you will be devastated.

Compelling story, strong characters - some you want to be friends with, at least one you want to occasionally punch in the mouth. Don't get too fond of your favorites. No one is safe in this world. I got more and more invested as the story went along, so much so that the last few chapters fairly broke my poor little heart. This is my second Megan Stockton book, and it's NOTHING like the first, Bluejay which totally traumatized me, but shows her versatility. You definitely can't put her in a box. And now I'm on to my third.

I only had one issue. I listened to this one, and I didn't love the narrator. He pronounced things in a way that drew me out of the story here and there and was a little too laid back for the intensity of some of the action and dialogue.

5 stars!!!

Quiet pretty things is a murder, slasher story (IMO) and kinda graphic, I won't lie. (Not Duncan Ralston/Aron Beauregard graphic, but still). I thought it was pretty scary, serial killers are HUMAN monsters, after all...

This story was amazing. A serial killer is stalking a small, rural town and his MO is so unique. As you can see from the cover, (to me they look like Mahjong pieces), he leaves small pieces behind at the scenes of his murders. You see the killer's POV as he cat and mouse's the detectives, as well as the detectives' POV as their fears and egos take precedence and prevent them from calling in help.

lol...I suggest you read the book...and then watch the movie!!!!

It's on amazon...going to rent it now. Came out in 2022.

I'll admit that I started this book last August. Then my dad died, and I had to put it down because it was a little too realistic, and I needed to slip into a world that was nothing like this one. Ultimately, I picked it back up because of the positive reviews I'd heard. I'm glad I did. The story was solid, the characters are well fleshed out, and the pacing was great. I felt it ended a bit abruptly, but that didn't affect my enjoyment overall. A solid 4 stars.

Solid serial killer thriller with gore, on-page killing of a dog, some of the worst bits left to your imagination with fade-to-black.

Good, immersive characterisation for most of the MCs, and I liked the serial killer's POV!

This was a thrill ride from start to finish. The story held my interest with a great plot and well thought out characters. Megan has crafted a truly evil psychopath on the level of Ted Bundy, and I loved the fact that he was unapologetically evil. The story culminated in what I felt was a flawlessly written chase scene that kept my eyes glued to the page.
