This counts as my review for the whole Haikyuu!! manga
”You don’t win alone. That’s just how it is.”
READ FOR: best character developments and themes that I have ever encountered READING LEVEL: Level 1-3 out of 5
*All of my reviews are as spoiler-free as possible unless stated otherwise*
I don’t think I’ll ever have enough words to express how much I love this manga and anime series but I’ll try anyway. But I just need to make it known that this has changed my view in anime and manga forever. I caught up with this manga in the last 30 or so chapters but I won’t say much to avoid spoilers... but it was crazy.
It made me laugh, cry, fall in love, think, and honestly... what else do you need in a series? I can keep going on and on about this series but honestly I think you should just read it for yourself. I really don't think you'll regret it.
When someone asks me what the plot is, honestly, all I can say is “they play volleyball” HAHAHA… but it’s so much more than that.
PLOT: ★★★★★ The plot was so well thought of from the very beginning and when I re-read the manga I can’t believe the amount of foreshadowing Furudate actually placed. My mind was so blown… I just. No words. I am seriously in love.
ART STYLE: ★★★★★ The art style… *chef’s kiss* especially in the later arcs. There were so many matches but even then Furudate never failed to leave me breathless at each one.
CHARACTERS: ★★★★★ The character development here is THE BEST. HANDS DOWN. that I have ever come across. I fell in love with the so many characters in this series that I did not even think that was possible.
The character relationships... the character dynamics... their mindsets... they are all so perfectly well done and realistic GAHHHH I've said this so many time throughout this review BUT THEY JUST MADE ME FALL IN LOVE SO EASILY. I can't pick my favourite one but hinata and kageyama just hold a special place in my heart.
This connects to the themes but my favourite thing that was done with the characters here was that each one of them embodied a theme or a message that the author wanted to get across. Those are spoilers so I won’t really talk about it but just know that it was one of the main reasons that made me go so crazy about this series.
*cough* hinata kageyama atsumu sakusa bokuto kita noya ushijima tendou tsukki suga kenma kuroo *cough* +++
Note: if you think this series is focused on only 1 team... you're in it for A RIDEEEEEE
I'm getting chills just looking at and remembering these panels ^^
THEMES: ★★★★★ Honestly I basically thought the themes were just gonna be “teamwork” and “friendship”… while it is all that, Furudate sensei was able to make it even deeper. And the symbolisms? You are not ready.
I think the one that was focused on the most was “It’s not always about winning, it’s about growth”. But there were also so many smaller things that lead up to that bigger point: (1) we get our strength from others, (2) but you also need to make yourself dependable, (3) there is always room for improvement, (4) working hard is good but overworking yourself isn’t, (5) you are built on the small things you do everyday, (6) an ace's back should be an inspiration to your teammates (hi bokuto), (7)+++
The way I wrote it was very straight to the point but I was amazed at how Furudate tackled the so many messages that I received from this series.
PACING: ★★★★★ THE TIMING. OF EVERYTHING. JUST MAKES SENSE.
It’s so realistic that I want to cry. (I actually already did… a lot of times.)
PAGE TURNER: ★★★★★
You should understand that I made this review weeks after I finally calmed down about this series cuz I was really going crazy about it HAHAHA if you have finished this series too or met me while I was reading this, you know what I’m talking about ;)
I'll keep this series close to my heart until the grave. You cannot convince me otherwise.
I'm hooked. Sure there's a bit to much slightly-BS philosophizing, but the action scenes are great, the integration of the characters is well done, the plot is propulsive, and the idea of high performance sports as physical and mind games is well explored. Time to go and read the first 42 volumes.
**Thanks to the artist, publisher, and NetGalley for providing me a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
1. Daichi, Asahi, and Suga's face when Hinata were praised by the audience were priceless. Dads' super proud moments.
2. Furudate-sensei finally revealing Tobio's backstory. And I'm not okay. Now we know what makes him so fixated with winning :"( Honestly, this very moment is the most perfect timing to reveal it. I have no words for Furudate-sensei except: freaking. genius. I love you Furudate-sensei.
3. I love how Kenma, Tōru, and Tobio share the exact same grudge against inanimate objects (gravity, atmosphere, sand) and find it incredibly cUTE hngggh—
4. Bokuto"normal ace"moment 🥺🥺🥺
5. 👉🏻 BOKUTO BEAM HELL YEAH— 👉🏻
6. AKAASHI KEIJI HHHGH U CUTIPIE BEAUTIFUL CINNAMONROLL—
7. —and the next one is the final volume what else should I do in life damn,,,,,
Finally, some backstory for Kageyama!!! His relationship with his grandpa was so cute. And it figures that he'd be obsessed with volleyball basically since birth. 😆 Got to see some more old characters in this volume, too, which made me happy! Miya Atsumu used to bug me so much, but he's starting to grow on me now... (I can't believe I just said that!)
"If you get really good..I *promise* you…somebody who's *even better* will come and find you."
It is amazing seeing EVERYONE come full circle and grow so much since we saw them back in high school! I mean, I KNOW they have grown because of the time skip, but we didn't really follow anyone except Hinata during that time so seeing everyone even better now is pretty amazing.
Absolutely loved seeing Astumu shine a little bit more in this volume and see him REALLY go to the next level! His serves are scary…*nervous laughter* (Glad he's on my favorite team! LOL!) Also, KITAAAAAAAAA!! He looks so handsome grown up!! *wipes tear* And second also, loved the way that Osamu supported his brother. <3
I didn't think I would, but I really loved hearing Kageyama's backstory. It was a little bitter sweet, but seeing how HE specifically has come full circle and how his teammates have (and had) his back was heart-jerking. That was a very very very good chapter!
Also, we finally get an answer to the question I've been wondering along! Who won the nationals before the time skip?! That chapter was also very good and it's amazing (I know, I sound like a broken record LOL) to see how the past has shaped all these guys now. <3 (That winning score from Bokuto was EVERYTHING!!)
Lots of really good moments in this volume even if it wasn't as cloud nine-ish for me. (This still VERY good!) We still get to see some new appearances from old teammates/opponents(!!!) that were AWESOME, get a "sorry" from Ushijima (LOL), a "stupid sand" from Kageyama (LOL), Atsumu blaming Hinata for a certain person getting "awoken," and some fun moments with the crowd involving Bokuto! (That scene with the King was whoa!!)
I can't believe I'm going into the final volume! :o :o :o
I'm absolutely not ready for this to be over, and I still have one more volume, but I already gotta say this manga and this story has been one of the most amazing experiences in my fucking life.
I loved the personal chapters, it was so fun getting so see how some of the players have grown over the years. Bokuto's was my favorite, of course, but shockingly enough Atsumu's was really good too. I wish that Kageyama's backstory had been put in earlier in the series cuz it doesn't hold as weight now (in my personal opinion), but it was still interesting to read. Furudate continues to one-up himself in terms of paneling and the action is as intense and fun as ever. Only one volume left, I don't want this to be over, but I'm so pumped to see the end.
My heart feels so full seeing my boys constantly growing and working towards their dreams!
I absolutely loved that this volume dedicated each chapter to a different character! Delving further into their passion for volleyball, and their dedication to bettering themselves and their craft.
This series inspires me to grow like no other - seeing other people work hard towards their goals and reap the rewards motivates you to work just as hard toward improving yourself!
The power with which I love this series is truly unmatched. I adore the growth that we have seen in all of the characters throughout the series. I also love seeing the glimpses of everyone effected by both Hinata and Kageyama throughout the series!
