Fans of Babymouse and Owly will love this early graphic novel series about the everyday adventures and high jinks of Reginald “Reggie” Guinn, a little kid penguin with a big personality!
Reggie is just like any other always looking for fun and adventure! But Reggie’s curious, playful side sometimes gets him into trouble. Like when he tries to give himself a haircut before picture day…and ends up gluing his feathers back on his head! Or when he sneaks a mouthful of cookie dough from the kitchen…then feels the sun baking cookies in his tummy! Or when his babysitter puts him on a kid leash while they walk to the park…and he rebels by acting like a dog!
Kid Penguin is a collection of six silly stories that explore kid-friendly themes, all through the eyes of a lovable, spunky penguin.
This beginning graphic novel is cute. It's a little chaotic but I think kids enjoy that when they are reading. My main issue is when books have anthropomorphic animals as the characters but then other animals as pets (in this one the main character is a penguin and then you see other characters are elephants, ducks, etc. but then there are pet dogs), it just feels weird to me. Like, why is that animal a pet and not humanistic. I guess it's kind of like Pluto in the Disney-verse haha.
Anyway, cute beginning graphic novel but wasn't actually too memorable for me. So while I would consider purchasing for my school library, it's not a must have.
🐧My Favorite Detail: Reggie’s personality! Reggie’s character is so believable and fully realized! It’s like I know him- his humor, temper, spunk, creativity, and his struggle to manage his childlike impulsivity getting him into some quite literally- sticky situations. He has become real beyond the book for me, like part of Reggie’s personality lives inside of me, where I catch myself wondering “what would Reggie think of this?!” I absolutely love him, I love Jen’s work, and I know kids will too! 🐧
Reggie is a mood. Or just a young child, honestly there's a lot of crossover.
Reggie is a funny, slightly mischievous little penguin. He gets up to all sort of mishaps because life is sometimes a joke being played on you, but also because he himself has a tendency to overreact and escalate situations while trying to fix them.
Even so, none of his mischief is malicious, he walks to the beat of his own drum, and only ever tries to do his best. This was a funny intro to comics for a young child. I'm curious to see what Reggie will do next.
Reggie is such a fun relatable character! My 7 year old loves the book and can’t wait for a sequel! The illustrations are adorable and perfectly reflect the animated personality of the main character. The stories are short and great for young readers. My daughter sat and giggled the entire time she read and reread the stories. Now she points out Reggie anytime we see the book at a store or library. The character has definitely left a lasting impression.
Reggie is living life as a kid penguin and experiencing all the fun and injustices of growing up - the itchy clothing tag, school pictures, and much more. I've been waiting for this to be released and was so happy to get my copy.
This early graphic novel (with chapters!) will be gobbled up by young readers.
BEWARE: may cause belly laughs and frequent rereading!
My 5- and 7-year olds had so much fun reading this book over and over again! I love the way the book is split up into short, silly stories that my kids could really relate to. Great for bedtime reading! We are all eagerly looking forward to book two!
Reggie is such an adorable character and each chapter is so sweet and funny! Jen de Oliveira definitely know how to do kid humor. Can’t wait for book #2!
I dont usually read graphic novels but this one wa really cute. Its very easy to read and very funny. Reggie is relatable to kids. He gets into some funny situations that make you laugh.
I read Jen de Oliveira’s graphic novel Reggie again today and couldn’t stop laughing and grinning. Simply adorable, and an absolutely perfect readability level for 1st-2nd grade readers.
This book is so cute and fun! I love Reggie's stories, and now I want to check him out in webcomic form. He's funny and a typical kid, and I think kids will really relate to the incidents.
Hilarious!!!! He's a kid penguin who acts like a kid!!! Love his character and personality!!! I never quit laughing!!! All kids (and kids at heart) will love this!!!
