There can’t be a more alluring title than ‘Selfie’, we all understand it and probably have all done them ( and still do 😁 )
The book is a high speed thriller that literally does start with a ‘Selfie’ but then with a back story leads to very much more
It’s a tale of temptation, urges and what happens when you give in to these and things don’t go as planned
It includes very current ( not Covid ) issues and manages to bring them into the story and show how horrific these things are in the modern world
It pulls no punches and is honest in it’s look at human nature and relationships, it has also humour and I really loved the Columbo joke
There are a lot of characters and because of the story a lot of mixing and matching within these characters so take a minute every so often to make sure you have them all sorted in your mind
It is a great, dark, scary, very scary read and told well by this brilliant author who again ends on a shocking note

I adore Stuart James. His thrillers never disappoint. NEVER.

I follow Stuart on both Goodreads and Facebook. Through the wonderful power of social media, I was able to receive an advance copy of his latest thriller, Selfie. It’s set to release on August 12, 2021. I have just four words to describe this:

GO. BUY. IT. NOW.

I was sent the book on Monday morning around 10:00 AM CST. It’s now 24 hours later and…I’m done. I read it. All. In less than 24 hours. I cannot tell you the last time I did that. Oh wait, yes I can… it was when I read another book by Stuart.

This book blends a new trend with a standard format for a thriller. The daughter is playing the Selfie game while in the car. Basically, she takes pictures of herself with cars in the background and then shares them with her friends. Best pic wins. Except she doesn’t really see what’s in the background of one picture, and her father does. The result is an ensuing game of cat and mouse with a twist that I never saw coming tying to an urban legend.

Stuart then weaves multiple story lines together like a true master. Seriously, other authors have tried to weave things together and the reader just ends up lost and confused. But not Stuart. Oh no. He masterfully weaves each story line together in a fast-paced, you don’t even want to put the book down to go to the bathroom, kind of way.

As the characters develop, your alliance shifts between them all. You will run the gamut of emotions in every chapter and your brain will be blissfully exhausted in the best possible way at the end.

Peter, Sam, Billy, Nadia, Mia, Lucy, all of the characters will get under your skin and you will find yourself wandering the house with the book in hand, reading while trying to feed your children with one hand, only partly paying attention to what your spouse is saying, tripping over things and worrying only about breaking eye contact with the words on the page.

What I hope I’m conveying is that this book is not one you will put down. Until the end. And then…well… I’m not going to spoil anything for anyone.

How many of us take ‘Selfies’ on a regular basis ? Lots of us I would imagine and obviously thin nothing of doing this. Well in this new book by Stuart James a young girl takes what she thinks is a harmless selfie which opens up a massive chain of events with lots of consequences.

Oh my goodness what an absolute roller coaster of a read this was. Usually when I’ve finished a book I write my review up immediately, however in this case I had to wait until my heart stopped pounding and I came back down to earth. This author sure knows how to write a book which will send your pulse racing and your heart beating faster at the end of very chapter. I couldn’t turn the pages quick enough to find out what was going to happen next. An exhilarating read which I thought was simply fantastic.

This was my first Stuart James book and, sadly, my last! I persevered to the end hoping it would get better but, honestly, it was dreadful! The plot was very far fetched. The writing style very repetitive with an over use of metaphors, not enough pronouns and unlikely humour. It reminded me of telling a child to go and write a ‘good story’ and they go over the top!

I couldn't finish this one. I found it very far fetched. So much was going on that I just could cope with it. I like the idea of the girl taking the selfie an thought a good cat and mouse chase thiller would happen which would be fine but all the other stuff was unnecessary in my opinion and that the reason I stopped around 100 pages in.

First read of mine by this author. Started out amazing. Everything you want in a thriller/horror story this book had. I was hooked.

Then we get about halfway done and it all changes. Plot goes haywire, characters galore - it was too much for me. Too many subplots with time splits (I couldn’t even keep up). This book could have been much shorter if things weren’t repeated and all the subplots were cut. Would have probably been a 5 star read without those.

A teenager taking a selfie captures an horrific photo which will put her family in danger. You'll never take a selfie the same again...

I liked it, it was a good story but there was parts that were better than others. The ending lacked something for me, the twist didn't really do anything. The teenager daughter Lucy was more annoying than anything, which really did not help me feel sorry for her. I also couldn't understand how throughout the kidnapping and their loved ones going missing, they were joking about and acting normal?

This had the opportunity to be amazing but personally didn't keep me gripped or have the effect it could have had. However, others will enjoy this one more than me, it's always worth giving it a try!

Thank you to Stuart James for the advanced reader copy of Selfie in exchange for my honest review.

Matt’s daughter Lucy is passing time in the back of the family car by snapping selfies with passing motorists in the background, swapping the best photos with her friends online. Then a car being driven erratically almost causes a collision. When Matt stops for fuel, Lucy shows his some of the photos. One driver looks familiar, but he can’t mistake the image of a lifeless, beaten, woman’s body in the passenger seat. As they exit the filling station, he sees the car with the erratic driver parked outside. Is the driver the man in the photo? And what has happened to the woman? What follows is a tense, cat and mouse chase for survival.

I found Selfie to be a well written, twisting, story which examines how far we would go to protect the ones we love, and what we would be prepared to do for their safety. The story expands to include Matt’s best friends and their respective wives and partners, as well as a few others, but it doesn’t get bogged down with too many characters competing for page space. There is just enough backstory to fill in the gaps, and the right level of creepiness from certain players.

I found myself liking Matt, although his attempts to shield his daughter from the knowledge of what was happening did become frustrating, as she was clearly no fool and starting making connections herself.

I will not ruin your enjoyment of this book by commenting on the story any further, so I will conclude by saying that I did not want to put this book down once I had started reading. It was that good. I recommend Selfie to anytime who wants an unputdownable, fast paced, book that builds the tension towards the inevitable crescendo. I gave Selfie five stars, and look forward to my next Stuart James book.

Disjointed and badly written

It’s not often I give a book a one star rating, but this was so so bad. Some reviews have said it’s an on the edge thriller- but I found it completely disjointed like the author had got different ideas and plots and then just bunged them together! The main premise of the story, a teenage game of taking random selfies had very little to do with the rest of the storyline. The descriptions were like a GCSE English exam- how many metaphors can you cram into a paragraph? the characters were completely unbelievable in their actions and language and the whole book was like a car crash.
I was bored and had no interest in the plot as it jumped all over the place with loads of inconsistencies throughout the story.

How far would you go for friendship?

Stuart James has done it  AGAIN.

This book is like one of those films, on which you need to concentrate on, and if you blink you will miss something! and even though there is a lot going on, the author through his writing keeps you on track.

There is a great cast of characters, and although there are quite a few characters that you need to get your head around, each of them has their own part to play in the story.

Within the first couple of pages you are in for a fast ride and just as you think you are slowing down towards the conclusion “bam"! The foot is back on the accelerator. I almost thought I had worked out what was coming towards the end, but it definitely was NOT the ending I expected.

I read this in less than a day because I became so immersed in the storyline and I didn’t want to put it down.

If you like a book where you can get totally lost within it’s storyline and feel invested in the lives of its characters then this is definitely a read for you.

Just one word of warning; next time you take a selfie check what is going on behind you!

Incredible! I adore Stuart James’ novels and this did not disappoint. Full to the brim with twists and turns which kept me on the edge of my seat wanting to find out what was going to happen next. I thought the ending was spectacular a real cliffhanger which leaves you shocked and wanting to know more!

Would recommend to all thriller fans, this is exhilarating, tense and exactly what you would expect from a top thriller author.

This was a fabulous thrill of a roller coaster! Selfie had me hooked at the beginning and never let go. What a smashing storyline that was expertly woven and delivered seamlessly.
And OMG those characters! Some I loved and some I loved to hate. Can’t say enough about this book! Highly recommend!!

As soon as you pick up a Stuart James book you know you're in for a roller coaster ride of a read & Selfie didn't disappoint in the slightest!

With an original storyline & a plethora of characters who we see develop further as the story unfolds, Selfie is a compelling, gripping thriller that you will not want to put down.

Lucy Benson is sat in the back of her father's jeep, playing a game called Selfie, the aim being to capture other cars in their images. Capturing a terrifying image, Lucy & her father find themselves running for their lives 😱

Many thanks to @stuartjamesauthor for my gifted ARC copy in return for my honest review.

Matt and his daughter Lucy are heading away for a break, intending to meet up with Matt’s wife. On the drive, Lucy entertains herself by taking selfies. One of her pictures captures something she shouldn’t have seen in a passing car – and soon the driver is after them. This book is fast-moving and action-packed, with some very nasty characters. SELFIE drew me in swiftly and kept me turning the pages with its many twists. If you liked Stuart’s other books, you’ll love this.

Wow wow wow!!!! I absolutely love Stuart James’ books and this one was by far the best (they are all awesome tho). I read it in two sittings and stayed up til gone twelve the first night as I couldn’t put it down. You are able to connect with the characters and really get into their story. The twists and turns throughout the book are both fantastic and nail biting and you really don’t know what is coming next. The twist at the ending was spectacular and you just can’t see it coming. Altho I couldn’t wait to finish it to find out what happened in the end Im now really sad it’s all over and my connection with the characters and plot has ended. Fantastic thriller I highly recommend.

As soon as I read the prologue in this book I just knew I was going to be totally hooked….and I wasn’t wrong!
The way Stuart James writes his books is second to non, giving you such a tense and gripping ride as you tear through the pages of the book.
What I love about this book is the fact that there is so much depth to it, as in it’s not just all about the main story, there’s so much more going on within it. It really makes you think about the characters and what might be beneath the surface with them.
My words will never do justice to describe how much I love this authors work, and how tense reading his books makes me.
Another fabulous book from this fabulous author.

Here comes the old age task of writing a review worthy of a book by Stuart James.

When you pick up a book written by the creepy genius that is Stuart, you know you are in for a rollercoaster ride. You automatically know by that name on the cover that you will be creeped out, damn right shocked and in absolute disbelief at the twist he never fails to give.

Not only is this book packed with the thrilling and creepy moments, you also see friendship, family and love. The bond between Matt and his daughter Lucy is nothing short of beautiful and heart-warming.

Another absolute belter by Stuart and of course I cannot wait for the next goosebump giving book by him!

Hold on to your hats on this rollercoaster ride of horror!

After reading and loving Stranded last year by Stuart James, I was very excited to read his new book Selfie and honoured to receive an early copy. Full of suspense and plenty of murderous moments, prepare for a scare!

We start with an innocent lad’s weekend away followed by an innocent girl, taking an innocent selfie and later we meet another innocent girl enjoying an innocent day out with her friend in Brighton. A lot of things in this book start seemingly innocent, but unfortunately, they all lead to disaster and have each person running for their lives!

We meet a mixture of characters in this book and whilst initially I wondered if I’d be able to keep up with who was who and the switching of stories, I soon got used to everyone and followed the book with ease.

The writing is fast-paced which is exactly what you want from a suspenseful horror. I love how Stuart crosses that line from thriller to horror, providing the jumpy moments, the blood and gore and I love how he isn’t afraid to kill anyone off! No character is safe! Haha!

I won’t lie to you the story is totally bonkers, but aren’t all horrors? That is what we love about them. I’m thrilled that this book also contains a moment that every great horror should contain and that is that there’s always a girl running up the stairs when she should be running out the front door!

If any of you follow Stuart on Facebook and Instagram, you will know how much he loves to watch anything scary and also how he loves a bit of a joke and a laugh too. All of this shines through in this story as you’ll find in amongst the scary suspenseful bits there is also some humour too.

Hostel meets The Cecil Hotel! An entertaining and enjoyable read! I will definitely be studying the background of every selfie I ever take now!

Thank you very much to the author Stuart James for my copy of this book.

This book was just something that intrigued me on Kindle Unlimited, so I downloaded it and decided to give it a read. Although it was quite interesting, I can't give it any more than two stars. It was just all over the place! There was actually too much information that I couldn't keep up with, and the fact that each chapter goes to a different person was so confusing. I found myself forgetting what happened with each character last time because it was quite a few chapters ago! I kind of struggled to get into this book, I just wanted to know what happened at the end. And it was kind of anti-climactic the whole way through. It was good, I liked the story and the constant twists, but I wouldn't really recommend it. Normally when I'm reading a book I can't wait to get home from work so I can read it, but I found myself forgetting that I was even reading this book, and more than anything I just wanted to finish it so I could get on with my next book. It's a shame to feel this way about a book I had so much faith in and was really enjoying at the beginning; it just didn't grip me like most books of this genre do. I'm not disappointed because it was good, I just feel like it could have been better.

My 5*review
Stuart James never disappoints and #selfie is no exception.

When Matt and his daughter Lucy go away for a luxury spa weekend with his wife Nadia following them the next morning everything was perfect .
Lucy is playing the ever popular Selfie game in the back of the car sending the best pictures to her friends.
What Lucy doesn't realize is that she has accidentally taken a picture that will change their lives completely.

A month previously Matt and his three best mates from school go away to Brighton for a much needed lads holiday and stay in the Blaire hotel. Matt,Sean, Peter and Billy just want to unwind, play in the casino and get drunk a perfect lads break.

After Matt drinks to much he heads off to his room leaving his friends to enjoy themselves little did he know that Billy was going to do something that would turn everybody's life upside down.

Stuart is a master of writing a book that will absolutely blow your mind. With every turn of the page every chapter you read the book just gets better and better and believe me you definitely didn't see the end coming.

3.5 stars rounded up! SELFIE starts strong with the compelling story of Matt and Lucy, a father and his pre-teen daughter headed for a weekend getaway with plans to meet up with Matt's wife at the hotel. Lucy is incessantly taking selfies, but she tells Matt it's a game she and her friends play...there must be other people captured in the image. When Matt realizes Lucy has taken a photo of something and someone she shouldn't, the plot starts off on a deadly game of cat and mouse. However, that action was superseded by many sub-plots and alternating timelines that honestly impeded by enjoyment of the main plot. I will say that the author circled back to the original cat and mouse game of terror that I found so thrilling and left me with a satisfying end. Thank you so much to the author for an early e-copy to review.

A clever story that starts from a simple selfie taken in the back of the car, and soon evolves into a tense, action-filled drama that you can't put down. Four friends meet up for a lads' weekend, which has disastrous consequences for everyone.

As usual with a Stuart James book there are some unexpected twists and a few gruesome scenes, and the story keeps you hooked as secrets are revealed and the characters start to mentally fall apart. It makes you wonder what you would do in a similar situation. Loved the ending too, totally unexpected.

Oh my goodness, this book is creepy good! But you may never take selfies again! Matt is on a get-away with daughter, Lucy when she takes a selfie but manages to catch an unknown driver in the background with something suspicious in the front seat. And so it begins...a nightmare for many couples as we see a "boys night" go wrong, blackmail, revenge and retribution. What could be spookier? References to Ouija boards (yes, I had one in my youth), crystal balls, and kidnappings all had me cringing and putting this down as it got dark (best read in daylight)! But I'm a sucker for James and his books as I've never been disappointed! So beware...but read it for sure!

Fabulous book! Stuart James never fails to bring it! That twist at the end is what makes me love his books every time! The characters were very believable, and the fact that it was applicable to today's generation of telephone users is downright scary! But I will read every book that he writes. I love to be scared half out of my wits. And every time I am! Another winner Stuart!

My first read by this author and wow it packed a punch. The storyline is original in the fact that a girl takes selfies but what is captured in the background?? Something terrifying…

I loved the characters especially the relationship between father and daughter Matt and Lucy. There are lots of twists in this book which keep reeling you in and became quite creepy. I couldn’t work out where the story was going and loved the ending a fab read

I will definitely be reading more by this author

If you love thriller/Horror books then Stuart James is the only author you need!
Holy crap yet another outstanding book. Every time I thought I knew where this was going another M Night Shyamalan twist appeared keeping me on the edge of my seat.

Every book I have read by Stuart James has been fantastic and a struggle to put down and this one didn’t let that trend drop.

His previous book, turn the other way, gave me a fear of White Vans, and well this one now will certainly have me thinking twice about hotels!

This book literally draws you in, and before you know it you’ve done nothing all day and it’s dark outside. I cannot recommend this book and this author enough!
