Millicent, Evie’s new secretary, has set a high bar, making the task of hiring a new lady’s maid more difficult than it needs to be. Despite doing their best to hurry the process along, Evie and Tom are side-tracked by mysterious goings-on in town. Someone is up to no good. As Evie and Tom follow the trail of clues, they stumble on a plot to ruin a high-ranking member of society. However, offering their assistance could backfire on them.
To make matters worse, Lady Evans – Evie’s previous lady’s maid – has landed on their doorstep with the most disturbing news. To think, Evie had planned the trip into town as a respite from all the troubles that seem to come her way…
Evie is interviewing prospects for the position of Lady's Maid. Millicent is doing her best to scuttle the process, even though she has received a promotion. After one of the interviewees is arrested for murder shortly after her interview, Evie steps in to find the person responsible. Caro has made her way back, and it seems there may be some drama coming her way.
With Millicent now her secretary after Evie's last secretary proved rather less than suitable for the post Evie's interviewing for a replacement lady's maid.. but Millicent has decreed that this should be done in a public house and with some rather off the wall questions.
Merrin/Meerin (some corrections are required throughout the novel) Smith is interviewed and Evie's not inclined to give her the position until she's rather out of the blue arrested for murder.. whatever happened after the interview? And why ever did she refer the detective to Evie?
It's all hands on deck and race to see if they can solve it before the police do.
Book 15 finds me back on track with Evie Parker, Countess of Woodbridge. Evie is called to clear the name of a young woman who applied to be her Lady's Maid. Shortly after interviewing with Evie the woman is arrested for killing one of London's most notorious Russian emigres. Evie is also worried about the Dowagers and her grandmother Toodles. They are being far too quiet. The topper is the return of Caro, now Lady Evans, fleeing her "beastly" husband. This series never fails to make me smile and laugh. I did arrive at the solution before Evie in this entry to the series, but it's the characters and surroundings that are the key to the series. Thoroughly enjoyable.
Well I will say that at least in this one Evie has a good reason to involve herself in the investigation. But once again the killer is plucked out of mid air with an ending that is rushed. Also why on earth did Lady Evans show up? The flimsy reason for her leaving her husband didn't make any sense given she played absolutely no role in the solving of the crime. I mean what the heck was the point? Also in numerous moments throughout the book Millicent is called Caro - which was a bit confusing - a little more spell checking and editing would have helped. But not much.
Another adventure with all the usual participants involved! Another murder, wrong party arrested, so the intrepid group interfere, as usual. Much more talking than action, however.
A fun read. I love the many characters in these books and Murder in the News is no exception. So happy Caro was back along with the grandmothers. They are always a good addition to the stories.
This is a good murder mystery with mischievous characters and cloak and dagger type of characters .Good fun banter with dry humour and sass and drama.❣️🤨🧐🕵️♀️💃🏻😉🙀
Great read!!! The story is really a good one, didn't figure out 'for sure' who the killer was, so nice ending;-) As always it was well written and I will read more and I do recommend it!
