Greg Coco mined letter collections and diary entries to produce this short but insightful and utterly fascinating anthology that demonstrates the humanity of the soldiers who marched to and fought through the great campaign and Battle of Gettysburg in the summer of 1863.
It is unfortunate that Gregory Coco is no longer with us. I had him as a park ranger for programs at Gettysburg, but I do not remember him because I was a little kid. However, we are fortunate to have his books and they are currently being republished (Thank you, Savas & Beatie!). This book was a fun read. Coco provides anecdotes of the common soldier and their experiences during the Battle of Gettysburg. If you are looking to read interesting stories, this book is for you. It is a light read but you obtain fascinating stories. I question the John Burns story that on day 2 Confederate sharpshooters shot at him while he was in bed for revenge for the previous day, but it is still an interesting story. Highly recommend!
