Upon realizing what her feelings are for Kurokawa, Fujishiro confesses to her! Kurokawa, however, is taken aback. This isn’t the Fujishiro she knows and admires! What will happen when her own feelings well up—and explode?
Fujishiro told Kurokawa her feelings, but Kurokawa isn’t really ready to deal with that, nor what it says about her. As the past and the present crash into one another, the future is the only thing left to decide, but will two failures wind up as one success?
What Failed Princesses has done spectacularly well is play the long game, but keep it interesting at the same time. When the whole thing comes back around at the end, it really comes back around and it drags all the baggage and intimate moments with it.
It takes a strong story to paint your lead as the villain, and Kurokawa absolutely fumbles the ball here. Her happiness with Fujishiro is based on an ideal of her friend that has slowly been falling apart and, in that moment, she wishes away her time in one brutal outburst.
What the story eventually points out is that Kurokawa hates herself and she loved the version of Fujishiro that hated her. But becoming friends made Fujishiro want to change herself, which is absolutely a compliment, unless you don’t think you’re worth anything.
These two failed, but from two different perspectives, which is the brilliant crux of this series. Fujishiro failed because she gave up her persona to be better and worthy of Kurokawa. Kurokawa failed because she let one little comment ruin her entire sense of self worth. The latter is just one of the truest explorations of how something innocuous can eat your whole life away if you let it that I have ever seen.
That’s a lot to overcome and this might be the only ‘they get together and the book ends’ story where I was still pretty happy with it. Don’t get me wrong, the epilogue is brilliant and I would take a whole additional volume of that (and apparently there’s an extra volume we aren’t going to get, sigh), but this is a healing process that takes time and makes sense that it does, even if I grumble about it some.
It doesn’t wrap up any other potential couplings, it doesn’t address everything (although at least one conflict moves to an uneasy truce after somebody realizes the why of things, a great touch), but what it gives is so good. When our leads finally have that conversation, you’ll know the one, it is a shouting match that just… levels out in a beautiful moment.
Yes, it’s emotionally over the top at times and tears fly all over creation, but Failed Princessess has always had such a perfect grasp of its characters and the story it wanted to tell that the way it blends everything into this last volume is without reproach.
I want more, that’s clear, but it is definitely from the side of ‘this was too good to stop right here’. As far as a denouement, it handles the central conflict like a masterclass in sowing all the seeds you needed and then reaping them at the exact right moment.
It’s not my favourite yuri series, no, but it’s definitely in the top 3 or 5. A little extra would have sealed the deal, I suspect, and if we ever see that bonus volume I can imagine it going up against Bloom Into You and Even Though We’re Adults for my highest praise.
5 stars - six volumes and it never disappointed me in the slightest. Not even once.
Man, Izumi might be one of my favorite side characters in manga. The way she deals with Kurokawa was great. We get some confusion and poor self image that Kurokawa has to sort out. Then she is ready to confront Fujishiro and it is so well done and touching. The ending is what I hope for the MCs but I wish there had been a bit more closure for the side characters. I have heard that there is a volume 6.5 so I will need to check that out. A good conclusion to a series that started off a little ho hum but ended well above average for me. I loved the artwork, especially during the more emotional moments.
Yes! So good. I really loved this manga. Everytime a new volume came out, I had to go back and re-read the others. Not because I didn't remember what was happening. It was just that I enjoyed reading them so much. Fujishiro is still my absolute favorite. I loved her and Kurokawa's story. All the side characters as well, even Miki! I would love to hear more about her and Maho. Great plot, great characters, and great illustrations!

I did not expect these characters to make me cry as I reading but I did.
When you hate yourself, it is hard to believe that people could like you let alone like you in a romantic sense. When you are content watching from afar. You never really know what people are going through. I liked the characters were able to tell each other what they were really feeling. The first few chapters of the volume, were really emotional.
The scene where Kurokawa Kanade hugs her younger self was so beautiful. So was the scene when Miki was angry and blamed Kurokawa for taking Fujishiro Nanaki away. I hope one day we get a chapter where Miki redeems herself and maybe her and Nanaki can be civil, even though Nanaki has changed.
I did love the cute chapter at the end where Nanaki kisses Kurokawa every time she calls her by her last name.

Ah what a good finale!!!! I honestly might reread the series cuz my memory is a bit hazy on the plot since it took me so long to finish the series. But holy crud it was so good. It tied everything from the other volumes so nicely and provided not just a cute romance but a really good character study into the two leads. My one gripe I think it was a bit too dramatic, Kanade basically screaming for half the volume I swear, but honestly that just made me more invested. It was sooo dramatic I was like “OH HOLY SHIT” the whole time. I loved seeing the characters grow and navigate themselves and their relationship. And the art is pretty stunning too! Also there should have been another volume, apparently there’s some extras but I don’t think they’ve been translated. So I will try to track those down.
This volume unfortunately ends in my biggest pet peeve for shojo manga, in that our two leads get together literally on the very last page. The volume itself is good as Kurokawa deals with a lot of issues I can relate to as she grapples with Fujishiro's feelings, but I really wanted to see these two dating beyond the short, though quite cute, epilogue we got. Just kind of a shame and brought the series down a bit for me.
That all said, I did enjoy my time with this series as I basically read all of it this week. It's a solid enough yuri story with some nice fan service about mid-way through that I wasn't expecting at all. I just wish it had gone at least a few more volumes so we could see all the plotlines have a solid wrap up.

This was a sweet ending! I might even read the continued version online. Reminded me a lot of the webcomic The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn't A Guy At All and also a little bit of Heartstopper. light, fun read and glad I picked them up on a whim!
