A gothic romcom between a cursed duke and his flirty maid, which inspired the new anime!
When the duke was a young boy, a witch made it so that any living thing he touched died. Unable to cope with such a cursed child, his family sent him away to live in an old mansion. Now a young man, his only companions are an elderly butler and his childhood friend, a buxom, blonde maid named Alice. Despite the fact that touching the duke means instant death, Alice is constantly teasing him, getting close and flirting mercilessly. But even though Alice loves to make the duke blush, her affection for him is the real deal. Can the two figure out a way to break the witch's spell?
Yasushi Inoue (井上靖) was a Japanese writer whose range of genres included poetry, essays, short fiction, and novels.
Inoue is famous for his serious historical fiction of ancient Japan and the Asian continent, including Wind and Waves, Tun-huang, and Confucius, but his work also included semi-autobiographical novels and short fiction of great humor, pathos, and wisdom like Shirobamba and Asunaro Monogatari, which depicted the setting of the author's own life — Japan of the early to mid twentieth century — in revealing perspective.

This volume was much better, in my opinion. The last two have just not caught my attention fully, but this one had a lot more of it. Maybe it's the introduction of new mysterious characters while also the plot took some big steps. I'm now curious about the next volume!
I am so use to seeing the main protagonist be called the Duke, that I forgot his actual name is Viktor.
A witches loses sight of her friend and stumbles upon the grounds of the estate. With the plan to steal from there and run, she happens to see the Duke in the snow shoveling it, trying to find Alice's lost earring. He appears to pass out and when he comes too, the stranger has melted the snow and found the earring.
She spends some time with Alice and the Duke, stating that her name is Cuff before transforming into a bat and leaving.
Sometime later, her friend Zain appears. He gets a crush on Alice, but it is clear that Cuff and him like each other. They agree to take Viktor to the next Sabbath, hoping to gather some information on the witch that cursed him.
Alice also has information involving her mother she wants to know. This gives the implication that Alice's mother may have been a witch or at least involved with them in some way. There is little information but Viktor hasn't completely lost home.
I really enjoyed this volume. As much as Viola annoys me it seems she has some feelings are on when it comes to her brothers and mother when it comes to the way she was treated. In their own way, Viktor and Viola have feelings of being alone.

I definitely linked this one better, and it seems like they are putting in more effort to break the curse. Fingers crossed they are able to eventually break it.
