Rate this book
It’s all come down to this. With the Decepticons gaining ground and the Autobots at the brink, the war for Cybertron careens to its climax.

Before now, the planet had known peace for 2,000 years, but there are those who remember the last war, and would bring that knowledge to bear to end the current one. Will more than secrets be unburied? Then, Arcee, Windblade, and Chromia mount a desperate rescue mission that finally reunites Optimus Prime and Bumblebee, but is it too little too late?

Even as the Decepticons lay siege to the last Autobot stronghold, new dangers emerge that threaten the entire world. Insecticlone swarms. Rust worms. And a great evil reborn... Exarchon, the Threefold Spark.

Just like that, the conflict is rearranged. With Exarchon’s reappearance, battles evaporate, victories become moot. Nowhere—and no one—on Cybertron is safe. The Autobots face a is Cybertron even worth saving? And if so, can Optimus and Megatron set aside their rivalry to do it?

Collects Transformers #37–43, War’s End #1–4, and Fate of Cybertron , from writer Brian Ruckley and artists Anna Malkova , Jack Lawrence , and Andrew Griffith .

I was born and brought up in Edinburgh. After studying at Edinburgh and Stirling Universities, and after a good deal of displacement activity (varying from spending three months in the rainforests of Borneo trying to record the dawn chorus of gibbons to briefly working in a tea warehouse / factory), I moved to England to enter the world of full-time employment.

As much by luck as judgement, I had a series of on the whole enjoyable and interesting jobs, mostly based in London. All of them save one have been in the charity sector, and at various times they have involved extensive overseas travel, environmental and community projects, nature conservation and fundraising.

Writing was a big feature of my childhood, and has ebbed and flowed as a spare-time occupation ever since. I sold a couple of short stories in the 1990s, but didn’t really start thinking seriously about writing novels until the 21st Century had got underway.

At the start of 2003, I turned myself into a freelance consultant on environmental projects, partly in order to devote more time to writing; since then, the writing side of things has taken over almost completely.

I am now back in Edinburgh, where I live with my lovely wife, and miss the excitement of London only a little, and only occasionally.

A rushed finale to IDW’s reboot. Not terrible by any means, I love the worldbuilding and politics of Cybertron, but there were so many characters in this series and so few of them developed into people I cared about by the end. There’s tons of material I hope the franchise explores again when they have the time to flesh everything out again, but it put into stark focus that whoever gains the Transformers rights next would do well to show some restraint regarding how big the cast gets.

All in all, this was a pretty decent ending to the series . The last two volumes (5+6) tied the series together neatly, and felt more focused than most of the earlier volumes.

I still think this series suffers from let's-put-as-many-unknown-characters-in-here-as-possible syndrome. I don't hate that, per se. IDW1 did it in most of their arcs, especially the exRiD and MTMTE/LL. But in IDW1 all the characters had a reason to be there, they all had their own (mini) histories and they all grew in their roles, no matter how briefly. This was barely the case with IDW2 - characters are thrown in willy-nilly, and while there are a few that stick around and start playing bigger roles, we don't really get to know most of them (and their personalities hardly stand out). I enjoyed the few spotlight-like issues, but it wasn't enough. Character development is the one thing that makes TF incredibly fun for me, so I hate that it was lacking. Made the comics feel flat.

That said, the world-building was nice, and pretty well done. I also think the quality of the art was more consistent than IDW1 (which had both incredible and terrible art), although it rarely really wowed me.

The IDW run of Transformers comes to an end and it hasn't grabbed me as much as I would have hoped. But it's good to see how the Autobots end up on the Ark and plenty of the original G1 Transformers get some page time.\

Optimus Prime and his Autobots face off against the Decepticons as well as Insecticlone swarms. Rust worms and Exarchon. Their enemies are numerous, but they've got Prime! What else do you need?

A faster pace than the last collection and the loose ends are tied up.

Now, we just have to wait to see who gets the rights for the next chapter in Transformers history. And it will all begin again.

Felt sorta rushed, likely due to publisher IDW losing rights to publish transformers. Sorta disappointed, but it wraps up in the expected way of setting up leaving cybertron and heading out on the Ark. I guess satisfied, but I’d have liked a more epic type wrap up that didn’t feel so obligatory.

Good lord this entire contunuity was boring. I didn't care about a single character beyond "hey, that's a neat character design".

Extremely forgettable. There are some good moments, but overrall they are drowned out by the slog that is the entire story.

Not going to reread it again.

Such an underwhelming run. More happened in the Beast Wars series that was 1/4 the length of Ruckley's plodding narrative.

The story ends

This was a fun series ending with a “save the best for last” vol 6. It was Transformers through and through and I recommend it to anyone who considers themselves a Transformers fan. It’s a David meets Goliath type of story with a bit of a twist in the end. Very enjoyable.
