English title: If The Moon Won't Hold You
3.5 stars rounded down to 3

A modern romance starting from middle/high school to adult age. The FL Cen Ning, and her mother are taken in by the Yan family when their dad dies, due to an old family friendship between the two families. The Yan family is a military family, and that's reflected in the ML Yan Xingzhi as well, who joins the military after graduating high school.

Technically the ML and FL are engaged due to an agreement between their grandfathers when they were born, but since it's not anything official, neither of them take it seriously. Rather, it's used more by the the other kids in the complex to make fun of the ML. There's a 5-6 year age gap between them; when the story starts the FL is just starting her first year of middle school while the ML is already a 3rd year high school student.

The story is pretty standard. The FL has a timid and shy personality, and the ML helps her out on multiple occasions when she gets bullied. Because of this, she develops a very early crush on him that remains with her into her high school and college years. To her, Yan Xingzhi is the moon in her world that had guided her and provided her with warmth and confidence, hence the title of the book.

However, due to a conversation she overheard, she believes that the ML isn't interested in her at all and tries to move on in college with a senior from the photography club. This leads to additional misunderstands on the ML's part, that she likes this senior and not himself. I know it shouldn't be too easy for the two leads to get together, but honestly the misunderstandings went on for a little too long and I felt myself frustrated with both of them.

I was especially frustrated with the FL. Clearly the ML treats her differently and more gently than anyone else, but she's so stuck in her conviction that he can't possibly like her that she doesn't consider the reason for why he treats her so well. And when he finally does confess, she's convinced it's out of gratitude for saving his life rather than because he actually likes her. Very frustrating.

The FL's photography experience also went too smoothly. The way the author describes her is that she's super talented and is able to catch the attention of world renowned photographers with her self-taught skills. She even wins a prestigious photography youth award at one point. I personally felt like it was too much.

Overall this story was okay but not anything special. Just a standard growing up and falling in love story centered around two people who each want to pursue their dreams.
