Sera Dwari is a brilliant chemist and a deadly assassin who will stop at nothing to expand her family’s empire.
With her criminal father’s guidance, they’re slated to dominate the drug industry with her creation: Devil’s Breath. There’s just one, handsome, smooth-talking problem. Cassius Batista. Sera is tasked to kill the billionaire unknowingly funding their venture. She plans the job, anticipating every outcome. The one thing she didn’t see coming was…love. But betraying her father isn’t an option.
Cassius Batista is not naïve. When his brother introduces him to the alluring Sera he knows something is off. She is everything a man could want in a woman. But Cassius didn’t reach the top of the food chain by playing the fool. Sera is hiding something and he is determined to break through her icy facade.
The line between truth and fiction blurs for them both as the stakes reach lethal levels. Their courtship is a dangerous game. It can only end one way—someone has to die.
Sera must choose between two men. The one who raised her and the one she’s fallen for.
Family may be forever, but is love worth risking it all?
Lang Johnson is an author of dark and steamy romance. She concentrates on crafting tales with strong female leads, explosive action scenes, and a diverse cast.
In her free time, Lang enjoys the more adventurous side of life and loves diving, snowboarding, back-country camping, and roller skating.
I just created two whole new shelves for this story: dark and brilliantly bonkers. (That is DARK in ALL-CAPS, be warned!)
Content warning for graphic violence, various kinds of child abuse, emotional and physical abuse of adults, hard drugs, basically everything you can think of.
Reading this book was a rollercoaster ride and I kept envisioning it as a super dramatic film or TV show with a twisted, badass heroine and a cinnamon roll hero. (A ruthless cinnamon roll who fit this universe, but a cinnamon roll nonetheless.) You guys are probably aware that combo is catnip for me, so I was having an excellent time.
This story subverted a lot of tropes of the genre in a way I found fun and fresh. Finally, I adored the heroine's relationship with her best friend. Go into this prepared for a wonderful amount of mess and gore, but also lots of gooey feelings. Enjoy!
4 stars, this book is for lanalogan and romajuliette shippers and I enjoyed every page of it.
"There are some who can live without wild things, and some who cannot. [...] Just don't fall in love with me, Cassius. I'll only break your heart."
Sera Dwari is a new money woman, a smart chemist, and a skilled assassin with one weakness: her father. She takes missions, one of them is to kill Cassius Batista, a billionaire unknowingly funding their project in a new drug called "Devil's Breath". She plans his murder but from the moment she met him, she knew he was a good person so instead of killing him they fall in love instead.
When the woman is an assassin that is on a mission to kill her love interest but falls for him instead then you just know it will be a HIT. While I started reading this I knew I would love the assassin girl because I love reading about women fooling men, I eat it up every time. That's why I'm comparing it to lanalogan from The Mindf*ck Series because in this book the guy also has no idea he's falling for a killer, especially his. My other comparison is because there's some kind of new drug that comes out, forbidden love. After all, Sera's dad hates Cassius so it was similar to a few These Violent Delights themes for me.
This is Lang Johnson's debut novel and I'm shocked because she wrote such a great main character, Sera Dwari is just so smart, and skilled, but also thoughtful, relatable, and loving. Cassius was also amazing, the fact that she wrote a character whose body doesn't respond to fear shows how smart this author is because it explains so much in this book, it really seems like the kind of book the author gave A LOT of thought and research before writing.
When you look at the cover you might think there's a lot of smut in this book but there's barely any since Cassius wants to have sex with Sera only if she falls for him. So I swear the cover might be suggestive but this is more of a suspense romance than a smutty one. I adored this, it was an unexpected read for me but I'm so glad I read it and I wish others would meet SeraCassius too because now I'm OBSSESSED.
So, the Taylor Swift songs for this book are 'Vigilante Shit for Sera, because the girl DOES dress for revenge. And also 'The Great War' because it shows the obstacles she and Cassius have to face to be together. But let me say this: I read most of this book listening to 'Cinnamon Girl' by Lana Del Rey.
Come chat with me about books and Taylor Swift on my Twitter .
i got the special edition paperback from steamy lit con last year and never got around to reading it but oh my god i’m upset i waited this long!
Sera and Cassius are so cute. He is an adrenaline junkie and she is an assassin who is only soft for her SHITHEAD father. 🫣 Sera is hired to kill Cassius but she falls in love instead 😂
the whole book happens in like two weeks so you kind of have to suspend disbelief a little but i still loved it.
Cassius is not a hoe which i loved. he doesn’t do casual but he also doesn’t do relationships, he’s committed for a few weeks and then breaks it off before it gets serious but it’s also rare for him to be IN these types of situations, he’s a guy that likes sex with a connection so it’s been a while for him. now for Sera….she was basically raised to use sex as a weapon so while she’s had many lovers (including a woman after her first date with Cassius that was fade to black) she never let go enough to fully enjoy it.
the ow scene with Sera and the ow is after her and Cassius’ first date she was feeling too many things so she called her old hook up Ruby and said to be naked when she got there and then the next chapter is Cassius seeing Sera, Ruby, and Sera’s best friend at a breakfast place where he finds out that she slept with the ow and he’s like “i don’t care that you fucked her, i’m pissed at why you did it. none of the bodies in your bed will replace me.” or something like that and honestly…..kudos to both of them because i support women’s wrongs and i just love Cassius.
there was also an ow that wanted to sleep with Cassius that his brother invited back to their hotel but he shut her down and his brother slept with her 🤢
for all the plot, this was pretty low angst because Cassius is just so understanding about everything and he really loves Sera 😂😂😂😂
this is my first book by this author, but i will most def be reading more ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Foreword PR is honored to be working with Lang Johnson for her debut release of Devil’s Breath! Devil’s Breath is a seductive, forbidden love, femme fatale, dark romantic suspense standalone. Visit here to find out how you can read early: Devil’s Breath
I received an ARC and I’m leaving a honest voluntarily review. Sera was a complicated woman. She was trained to be a ruthless business woman and Assassin. Her father Lorenzo always manipulated her to get him out of trouble. In her newest assignment all the players have a different motive. She and Cassius had good chemistry. The book was a perfect balance of suspense, mystery and romance. I’m looking forward to reading more from this author.
Okay this was awesome. Our FMC, Sera, is a badass assassin who also is a genius chemist and created a new drug that is going to sweep the market. Our love interest, Cassius, is a potential investor to the front that will be producing the drug. However, Sera is tasked with seducing and killing Cassius in order to get access to his 400 million dollars. Along the way we have intense action scenes, witty banter, and confessions of undying love.
We sorta lose the whole premise that the drug Sera created, Devil's Breath, is supposed to take over the streets since it's eventually announced that they really only created this business opportunity to lure Cassius in as an investor and get access to his money. It's actually used as a way to assassinate people instead of being micro-dosed and used to get high. But with the way the story is written, you kinda forget that and it just fades out naturally. There's not much spice but the emotional connection between Sera and Cassius makes up for it. Definitely a great read!
You know those days where you are outside, but it is overcast, doesn't seem too hot, nor too bright? Then by the time you come inside and you look in the mirror and realize you are now basically a lobster? You didn't realize you were getting sunburned because it was so slow it just kinda crept up on you? But at the same time, the good new is, that tan is going to look SO good? That is the type of slow burn for Lang Johnson's Devil's Breath. It is SUCH a great read. If you are looking for a couple of morally gray characters who are searching for their next leap then you are at the right place. Cassius is a thrill seeking, intelligent, billionaire. Sera is a wickedly smart assassin on her next assignment. There is crime, there is intrigue, there is a sweet slow burning passion that will keep you hot and excited for each page.
This book was so well done. A female MC strong and sexy. A male MC whose not afraid of embracing his feelings, without being sappy. Sera and Cassius were well written. Their chemistry was fantastic. Their stories gritty and real. I loved the well-conceived plot that was layered and well-executed. I appreciated the action sequences that highlighted so well how it's no longer a man's world. Romantic suspense is not my typical read, but if they're all like this, I'll read more!
Damm!!! I absolutely devoured this one!!! I can’t believe this is the authors first book!?? She absolutely killed it!! Everything about it is 5 stars all the way. We start with absolutely fascinating characters….. they have such depth to them that you instantly want to know all about them…. Sera is fierce intelligent and a straight bad a** but also has soft side that only few see. Cassius is well…. Perfection! I loved how he “saw her”. You can feel their connection leap off the pages. The story itself was addictive and you find yourself NEEDING to finish it. Lots of twists and tunes they kept me on the edge of my seat! I am in love with this and will absolutely read more from Lang in the future.
I loved the book. The mind games were very entertaining. I liked that Sera stayed as a strong female character throughout the novel and Cassius as the male lead had actual depth. They complement each other even if they start on opposite sides of the law. I stayed up trying to finish the book as I wanted to know the ending. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I stopped on chapter 13 when the heroine went and slept with her female friend after her first date with the hero. The hero learnt about this, he wasn't even jealous. He said something like : I don't care that you slept with her but why you did it.
So, we have a hero who is not jealous and possessive when the heroine sleeps with others and a femme fatale/assassin heroine who sleeps around even after meeting the hero. I don't care about the reasons.
I thought I would find another amazing heroine like Lana Meyers in Mindf*ck, but no.
Not for me.

Cassius is a billionaire who is in NY visiting his brother to help him in his new business , and it is there that he meets the mysterious and seductive Sera. Sera is a businesswoman and also an assassin, and she has been hired to rob and kill Cassius. What she didn't count on was starting to feel things for her target, but when her father puts her between a rock and a hard place, Sera will have to make the most difficult decision of her life. ❤️❤️❤️ The plot, the characters, the tug of war between the two characters. Sera is fascinating and Cassius, how can she not fall at his feet? I would love to read more about this crazy couple who love risks.
“Why ask me out if I’m a femme fatale?” Cassius shrugged. “As Aldo Leopold said, ‘there are some who can live without wild things and some who cannot.’” “And you cannot?” “No, I cannot,” he replied with quiet steel. “There’s a lot to be said about those who haven’t had all the rough ridden off them.”
“Don’t pull some territorial, alpha male bullshit on me.” She tossed her hair over her shoulder. “That won’t go over well.” Cassius’s eyes darkened like clouds before a torrential downpour. “You don’t get it, do you? I don’t care that you fucked her. The reason you did it is what pisses me off.You think all the bodies in your bed will stop you from thinking about me? I promise you it won’t.” Sera’s breath caught as his fingers pressed against the hammering pulse on her neck. “Feel that? Feel how much I affect you? You’re scared of getting close to me. You push me away because you know there’s something between us.” His mouth hovered over her ear. “That makes you a coward.”
I’m always keen to try out author’s I’ve never read before and when I read the blurb of this book, I just knew that I had to give it a chance. I’m a total sucker for a good romantic suspense novel and that’s exactly what I got with this book. I was pulled into this story from the very beginning. The author had me hooked straight away and wasn’t willing to let me go. Thankfully, I was a very willing passenger on this great ride. The story flows along quickly and is full of action, intrigue, danger and suspense. Added to that is an almighty blast of angst as the two main characters, would be assassin Sera and her would be victim Cassius top toe around one another. Set in the dark underworld of drugs, this is dark and raw in parts but is a fantastic read that I just didn’t want to put down. It is most definitely with the 5 stars that I’m giving it.
Devil’s Breath is the debut novel by Lang Johnson. I didn’t expect to get so swept up in this romantic suspense- but loved that it did- the author certainly produced a captivating and action packed adventure that surprised me, in the best possible way. We have a feisty female assassin, who also happens to be a genius when it comes to chemistry. She’s developed a new drug that is set to explode onto the market. Then we have the billionaire investor who’s funding the show, who has a price on his head. What happens when chemistry ignites along the way? We get a very intriguing story that will ensnare your attention right from the get-go! Looking forward to more from Ms. Johnson. Happy Reading!

This book was amazing! I read it in one sitting and enjoyed every second of it. I really liked Sera's character and I liked that she was realistic given everything she had to go through. I loved how Cassius constantly tried to help her and supported her no matter what and I liked how while I was reading I could sense when her character was being developed more and I really liked who she was by the end. I also really liked Cassius' character and how he wasn't just the typical 'nice guy'. His character had actual depth which is something I enjoyed. Also the representation in this book was amazing! I loved that the characters had different sexualities and ethnicities and that they actual talked about serious issues like mental health and sexism because those aren't topics that are usually explored in a dark romance book. The plot of this book was super interesting and I liked that there were equal amounts romance and plot in this book instead of one outweighing the other and the plot twist really surprised me which doesn't happen very often so I was very happy about that as well. Overall, I absolutely loved this book and would recommend it to anyone who likes dark romance, mafia romances, or just morally-gray women in general!
This was a really enthralling read! I honestly wasn't expecting to like this one as much as I did but just a few chapters in I was hooked and could hardly put it down! Not only is this book sexy, it is full of shocking twists and turns every few chapters. It was thrilling and kept me on the edge of my seat. This is my first time reading this author before but I plan on coming back. This book was fantastic! I would definitely check for triggers though if violence and blood is one for you though.
RTC but I really enjoyed this book. It always kept me super interested and on the edge of my seat because I waiting to see what would happen next. This book just really fascinated and I just wanted to read more of it. This book was just so enjoyable to read and I had a lovely time reading it. Also, special shutout to Sera who was a lovely heroine and whom I adore with all of my heart, she was such a well fleshed out character and I love everything about her.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
This, I think, is a solid 3.5 stars. I would have love to give it a 4 but I think despite the writing style and characterisation, something still fell short.
When I figured out the main couple/relationship trope - assassin chemist girl x borderline psychopathic but morally good guy - I was hooked. I think Sera was an incredible character, and I loved seeing her in all her badassery. And of course, who wouldn't love Cassius. He was perfect .... though, some might say (me) he might have been too perfect at times. Things seemed to go really well for Cassius, all things considered. Nothing ever really went (too) wrong for him, and he always came out as winner in whatever he does. With his brain condition making him a complete daredevil, while also being this Prince Charming type, Cassius lacked flaws that would have made his character have a lot more depth. Nevertheless, his character remained interesting till the end.
My only one gripe with the book was that it wasn't as dark as I thought it would be. Sure, it was quite gory and there were plenty mentions of blood. But in terms of questionable relationships, Cassius and Sera were pretty fluffy most of the time. In fact!!!! It wasn't smutty either. They have like two major scenes, and then one that was like ... closed door. I can't lie, I was really expecting something more.
In all, I think this is a good book to get you out of a slump. It's pretty short, so you'll breeze through it and the writing style is enticing enough that it's both simple and beautifully done.
This book was so new and fresh! It was a smooth read from start to finish and this isn’t even my kind of genre but man did I LOVE IT! Lang made the characters so understandable and don’t even get me started on THE BAD ASS WOMEN IN THIS BOOK! It’s dark, it’s spicy and it’s the perfect escape. I highly recommend 🥰🙌
Oh my goodness this is such a fantastic read. I have never read anything by this author and when I saw the synopsis it piqued my interest. I absolutely loved the complex characters and the story. Definitely worth reading and I can’t wait to see what comes next.
I very much enjoyed this book. Sera was a main character unlike almost any I've read. Cassius was definitely the quintessential romance novel hero. It kept me on edge. The pace was a bit off in some spots. A bit slow in some and very fast in others. But overall I really enjoyed this book. I received an arc for free in exchange for an honest review.

First and foremost, I'd like to talk about the representation in this book. It was done so beautifully! I always wanted to see brown and black characters in action books this way. The way Lang Johnson just has her characters exist is utterly amazing.
While I do like 3rd person P.O.V's, certain chapters didn't seem to flow as easily as others. A lot of the time, it felt quite repetitive. Some information just felt like it was being spoon fed to me. I think it's okay to leave a little mystery to your characters. Or even give the reader clues about what type of person the character is or is supposed to be. Readers are smart even when they think they not.
Speaking of characters, I loved the idea of Sera being this smart and calculated businesswoman by day and this sexy and cold badass assassin by night. If anything makes my heart melt, its women killing men. Even Cassius, who I expected to be one of those harsh males, was loveable from the beginning.
I enjoyed how Sera's character development could not only be seen, but felt throughout the happenings of the book. I went into this book supporting her all the way and to see her get the ending that she did, just makes me really happy.
