I am woefully behind in reading & reviewing An Alaskan Family Thanksgiving, but don’t let the word ‘thanksgiving’ in the title deter you from reading it now. It’s one of the sweetest stories I’ve read, and it’s just as good in winter or spring or summer as it is in late fall.
When I read that this story took place in a senior living apartment complex in Palmer, Alaska, I was so hoping we would get to hang out with Bonnie and her quirky group of friends, aka the Mat Mates. As soon as Adam is halted by a woman with orange-streaked white hair and a broomstick to allow geese to cross the street, I did a little bookish clap of glee because I just knew the Mat Mates were on the scene! And I was right! Oh how I loved getting reacquainted with these dear, funny ladies – and also with Lauren’s goats who treat us to a hilarious yoga session once again.
Adam and Sunny are about as polar opposite as two people can be, at least at first glance. Adam’s job with his father’s investment company requires him to be all about the bottom line. And his newest project – the senior apartments in Palmer – is turning out to be more of a money drain instead of a money maker, even if it is for noble reasons. Sunny, on the other hand, has a name to match her bubbly personality, and it’s easy to see how much she loves her job as the activities director. In fact, it’s easy to see that it’s not just a job to her – she pours her heart and soul into it and into the residents. In return, they are a family to Sunny and her adorable daughter Piper – and vice versa. It’s inevitable that Adam and Sunny will clash over their cross purposes (and then of course fall in love anyway), but I loved the way that the author turned this plot point on its head so that it wasn’t as predictable as maybe it first appeared to be.
The result is, as I said, one of the sweetest stories I’ve read in recent memory. The way the community rallies together, the way that Adam teaches Piper about photography, the way he and Sunny fall in love, the way that friends become family and family become friends… and especially the way one unlikely person changes the outcome – all of it is just perfection and emotion and the kind of blissful sigh that comes from reading a delightful-in-every-way book.
Bottom Line: Beth Carpenter’s Northern Lights series is one of my faves, and each new installment reminds me of exactly why. An Alaskan Family Thanksgiving is a sweet romance with vibrant characters (main and supporting) and the kind of community that restores your belief in humankind. Watching Adam and Sunny fall in love was truly a pleasure, and so was watching Adam fall in love with Palmer, Alaska, and its residents (especially those in a certain apartment complex). This book hit me in all the feels, beyond just the romance (though I loved that, too), and it will be a fave re-read for me in years to come.

I absolutely ADORE this book! It's rare to find a book that centers around Thanksgiving (more popular choices being Christmas, Valentine's Day, etc.). It's my favorite holiday because it's focus is more about the feeling of thankfulness and surrounding ourselves with family, friends, and good food, rather than gifts. This is going to definitely be an annual Thanksgiving read for me!
Sunny is such a warm, sweet woman who is working hard to raise her daughter Piper, while keeping the tenants of a senior apartment complex active and entertained. The cast of seniors each provided Sunny with the family members that she lacked. Their individual personalities were fun and spot-on for their character roles.
Adam had fallen into the trap of trying to please a parent. His mission in Alaska helped him open his heart and allowed him to find what he was missing in his life. He's excellent with Piper, finding a common love for capturing moments through a camera lens.

Relationships and hearts are healed, giving your own heart a sense of healing, too! The romance is sweet and clean. Wonderful read!

Single mother, Sunny Galloway works as an activities director at A senior citizen apartment complex in Palmer, Alaska where the people are her and her daughter’s family now. She and her daughter, Piper love the seniors there since they have no family of their own. Now Sunny finds out that the complex is being sold and taken over by another company. Will she lose her job? She loves working there.
Adam Lloyd is the new boss. He needs to see if it’s a profitable business to keep or to sell to someone else. Once Adam meets Sunny, he’s intrigued by her. He slowly meets all of the other tenets and finds that they are wonderful people. The more time he spends with them, the more he wants it to works. Being with Sunny and Piper he realizes that he’s missing so much out of life. Like having a wife and children. A real family to come home to. He enjoys teaching Piper photography. He’s very good and patient with her. That was his dream and enjoys doing it again. How did he forget his love of photography? He loves that Piper and he has a lot in common. He enjoys teaching her. All things he’s missing. What will happen to the senior citizens complex? Will he disappoint them? Will he suggest selling it? What will happen to Sunny and Piper? Will he walk away from them, who’s becoming important to him? Will he stay in Palmer? This is a feel good book. Wonderful characters, a precocious little girl and a strong, beautiful, loving woman. It’s a feel good book where they all come together and make you feel the love.

What a perfect story for Thanksgiving! What I loved about it was the genuine feelings for family, for friends, and folks who became more than friends...much more. It’s not so much that Sunny and Adam were “lost” as they were both so used to giving and not dealing with the emptiness of some of their days. I loved their budding friendship that was so much more. I loved how Adam took Piper, Sunny’s little girl, under his wing to teach her the things he had learned as a child. (Please don’t tell Piper I called her a ‘child’. She may just jump out of the book and give me a piece of her mind!) Seriously, though, imho this book embodies Thanksgiving. It’s about friends and the family you make. It’s about love and being there for those you love and have come to love. I really enjoyed this book and heartily recommend.

This was a sweet story set around the Easy Living apartments in Alaska. I liked how Adam's character changed in the story and I also liked Sunny, whose name was perfect for her. She was a sunny addition to the story with her cute, precocious daughter, Piper. The residents ofthe Easy Living apartments and all of their fun activities pulled me into the story. The ending was absolutely perfect too and made me smile. I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.

Sunny, Piper and Adam's story kept me smiling, chuckling and outright laughing out loud!! I didn't want to put it down!!!! It was such a wonderful story that included friends in it from her earlier stories. What a pleasure it was to be able to visit briefly with them as well! As always, her descriptions make you feel like you are there seeing it all. All of Beth's stories give me joy and happiness when I read them!! This story touched my heart strings!!!! :) This is an heartwarmingly magnificent Thanksgiving story, that is beautifully written and so very worth reading!!

A delightful continuation of the Northern Lights series, in which Adam Lloyd finds himself attempting to save a failing seniors' apartment complex that he wasn't expecting to care about. But he does, especially the activities director, widow Sunny Galloway, and her adorable 9-year-old daughter. When it becomes clear why the complex is failing financially when it is succeeding in all other ways, a grant is needed. But where to get one?
Then when that grant is achieved, but won't be provided until after the new year, all looks to be lost when the grantee turns out to have been a fraud. What's going to happen next and will anything save the little community? Down the hall in room 101, there could be an answer in the guise of the grumpy old man who lives there. But who knows what mysteries he maintains? And will he come through or will Adam have to sell the property to get his company out from under?

In steps Sunny Galloway the bubbly activities director and his love of photography is brought back into his life. But something has to be done to keep the apartments from closing, can it be done in time? Will Adam be able to save the day and keep his father happy and still keep his job at the company? You’ll have to read the book to find out!

An Alaskan Family Thanksgiving is a clean, heartwarming, inspirational romance. I love these characters - the seniors, Sunny’s adopted family, are awesome. Piper and Adam share a love of photography. Eventually, Adam found his way and everything fell into place in this amazing, well written story.

This was a feel good story about single mom, Sunny, who is the activities director for an apartment building for older people. The building is unexpectedly sold when the previous owners are killed in an accident. Adam, an employee of the buying agency comes to their small town in Alaska to develop a plan to make the property profitable. This proves to be a very challenging task, once Adam gets to know Sunny, her daughter and the residents. Set during Thanksgiving, this is a sweet story that was a delight to read.

FRAMED AGAINST A backdrop of snowcapped mountains, the old-fashioned water tower read Palmer, which meant Adam Lloyd had arrived in the right place after following Highway 1 from Anchorage.
He wasn’t sure he’d ever been on a Highway 1 before. Not a lot of roads in Alaska, apparently.
Now he just needed to locate the seniors’ apartment complex in Palmer that he’d been assigned to evaluate.
Following the GPS instructions, he passed the public library and turned right onto the next street.
As Adam drew nearer, the white-faced dog turned soft brown eyes in his direction and wandered over. Adam reached to pet him, and the woman said,
“Hi. That’s Bob you’re petting, and I’m Sunny Galloway.” She flashed a smile, and the brilliance of it almost made Adam blink. “Linda told me you’d be coming by this morning. We really appreciate your help. This thing just seems to get bigger every year, and we’re running short of space.” She reached inside the car and hefted out a large cardboard carton. “Here, could you take this one, please? I’ll show you where we’re setting up and get you started on the project.”
Before Adam could ask who Linda was, the woman had deposited a surprisingly heavy box in his arms.
She then balanced a slightly smaller box on her own hip, and in a well-practiced move,
I recommend this book..

I could see this being a cozy choice for the right reader, unfortunately this wasn’t the best fit for me right now.
I liked Sunny and Adam well enough, they’re genuinely kind people, but when characters have few apparent flaws to overcome, when they’re understanding to the point where it circumvents pretty much every possible conflict, there isn’t much of a character arc to invest in and really drive things forward.
I felt similarily about the romance, these are two nice people, they share some meals together, they work together, he’s great with her daughter, but I never felt that engaged with their developing relationship. Like Sunny and Adam themselves, I guess everything was all a little too nice and easy, he is from another state, so there was potential for that to be an issue but that barely materialized nor did any other reason for them to resist each other, and I like some resistance, some tension in my romance, whereas this one would work best for those craving almost no angst or hurdles for the couple.
There is a slim plot here, everyone working towards saving a senior living complex, an important goal yes, but since it’s a shared goal and Sunny and Adam are on the same page at every turn, it left me feeling like there wasn’t enough to the story.
It felt like this book focused more on minutia than anything else, detailed accounts of every photo taken, details on various craft projects, details about a wedding, a tour of the area, a craft fair, etc., these are not uninteresting things, but for me these details would have been more interesting had they been sparingly woven into a propulsive plot rather than seeming like filler for a book that didn’t have quite enough plot or character development. But if you’re in the mood for a quieter novel with an emphasis on extraneous stuff, this might be more up your alley than it was mine.

With the holiday upon us, this story was a reminder of what Thanksgiving and family is all about.
Adam Lloyd is in town to fix up the seniors’ apartment, Easy Living, in Palmer, Alaska. What he didn’t expect , was to meet Sunny Galloway and her sweet daughter Piper.
These two characters, even though they were dedicated to their work, were feeling that at times, something was missing in their lives .
As they work to together, feelings between them develop. Will it end when Adam leaves, or will he reassess his goals and discover new ones that will fill his heart?
The story was not only a sweet and touching clean romance, it was a reminder that family is not always those we have by blood, but rather, those whose friendship surrounds us and is treasured .

Book ten in the Northern Lights series is a sweet and heartwarming romance. The cast is entertaining with Adam and Sunny, Sunny’s adorable daughter, and the Mat Mates. They even have a Scrooge type of character who turns out to be a kind soul and helps save the day. There is a true sense of community within the senior’s residence that warms the heart. The story reads at a good pace but fuels heavy emotion during a crisis. Be sure to have a tissue or two nearby because those scenes are so endearing, you’ll smile and shed a tear at the same time. If you’re looking for a book to read on a lazy afternoon, I highly recommend this one. Reviewed for Still Moments Magazine.

An Alaska family thanksgiving
I enjoyed reading this book very much. I loved how Sunny and Adam meet and how their relationship grew during the book. I loved Sunny’s daughter. This is part of a series but don’t have to read the first book. So many good scenes in the story. A really great thanksgiving story.

this is a wonderful story sunny works at the assisted living center but it was sold and adam comes in to help with the transistion it is a warm well written story about family and second chances i was given a copy of the book but this is an honest review very good

I thoroughly enjoyed this heartwarming story full of friends, kindness, compassion and romance. When the residents of the Easy Living Apartments needed financial support so many people were willing to help, it was a very special Thanksgiving.

Single mother, Sunny Galloway works as an activities director at Palmer, Alaska. It’s a senior apartment complex where the people are her and her daughter’s family now. She and her daughter, Piper love the seniors there since they have no family of their own. Now Sunny finds out that the complex is being sold and taken over by another company. Will she lose her job? She loves working there.
Adam Lloyd is the new boss. He needs to see if it’s a profitable business to keep or to sell to someone else. Once Adam meets Sunny he’s intrigued by her. He slowly meets all of the other tenets and finds that they a wonderful people. He will try to make sure he finds a way to keep it. The more time he spends with them, the more he wants it to work. Being with Sunny and Piper he realizes that he’s missing so much out of life. Like having a wife and children. A real family to come home to. He enjoys teaching Piper photography. He’s very good and patient with her. That was his dream and enjoys doing again. How did he forget his love for photography? He loves that Piper and he has a lot in come. He enjoys teaching her. All things he’s missing. What will happen to the senior citizens complex? Will he disappoint them? Will he suggest selling it? What will happen to Sunny and Piper? Will he walk away from Sunny and Piper, who is becoming important in him? Will he stay in Palmer? This is such a good feel book. Wonderful characters, a precocious little girl and a strong, beautiful, loving woman. It’s a feel good book where they all come together and make you feel the love.

October 25, 2022An Alaskan Family Thanksgiving is a clean, heartwarming, inspirational romance. I love these characters - the seniors, Sunny’s adopted family, are awesome. Piper and Adam share a love of photography. Eventually, Adam found his way and everything fell into place in this amazing, well written story.
