When two women set out to rescue a pregnant homeless donkey in Desert Valley someone tries to kill them while they are on their rescue mission. They don’t know who wants them dead or why someone is after them. Nora Duke and her friend Felicia work for a donkey rescue mission but now they need someone to rescue them from a ruthless killer who seems to be know their every move and is always one step ahead of them.

I found this book by Dana Mentink to be gripping at times and an action packed nail biting suspense. This suspense book happens at Christmas time but the killer doesn’t care what time of year it is as long as he gets the opportunity to kill those two rescue workers who could identify him and destroy all his well made plans and secret identity. Romance also blossoms when Seth Castillo comes to their rescue and becomes Nora’s protector. This was a good suspense story and it didn’t disappoint this reader.

I recommend this book to readers of Suspense Thrillers and Harlequin Love Inspired Romances. If you have been following Dana Mentink’s Desert Valley Justice series this is book five.

I purchased my own copy and all opinions expressed here about this book are entirely my own.

This story was such an exciting and action-packed addition to the Desert Justice series! You could easily pick up and enjoy Christmas Crime Cover-Up as a stand alone novel if you wanted to. However, if you read book two in the series, Missing in the Desert, you will get a better idea of what happened to Seth and how far he has come since the tragedy that impacted him in that novel.

The author really kept me guessing with this story. I just could not figure out who wanted Felicia and Nora dead. What in the world had happened to put them in someone’s cross hairs when they had both simply returned to save a wild donkey in the desert? There were some excellent twists in this novel.

I really liked Seth. He had overcome so much and was a good and patient man with Nora. They worked and fit well together and I liked seeing them grow close in this story, even as Nora pushed back against any connections to Furnace Falls. I also enjoyed how much Jude was entwined in this book and am looking forward to the final book in the series, which will feature him as the hero.

'At this point, her mother would have dropped to her knees and prayed. No way would Nora waste time with that. Prayers were for people who needed saving. Nora intended to do the saving herself.'

Boy, this one ticks all the boxes for a suspense lover like myself. Mentink hits the ground running with an action-packed story and continues throughout the book. Her characters are well developed and the plot a good one. It was good to see friends from previous books in the series also. I read it in a day! Well done!

My thanks to the publisher and author for a copy of this book. The opinion in this review is entirely my own.

I have read all five books in this series and have enjoyed each book. This book had a surprising ending. This is a quick read. I suppose if you haven’t read the other in the series you could still enjoy this as a stand alone but I recommend reading them all and in order. This book just mentions characters from the other books.

Christmas Crime Cover-Up ( Desert Justice #5)
By Dana Mentink
Christmas Crime Cover-Up is the fifth book in Desert Justice series. I love this series and this one was a little different. Animal rescuer Nora gives it her best with a pregnant donkey, but someone is desperate to silence her. Can they save the donkey, facing her past, suspense, and pack full of action and danger. I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

I loved this book!!
The mystery begins on page one. What is Nora Duke searching for, and what is the sound that startles her? The tension only increases from this point on.
Interwoven with the suspense are themes of forgiveness, renewal, and trust. Nora has been running from her past for ten years and returns to her home in Death Valley only out of necessity. But someone wants her dead and will stop at nothing to accomplish his mission.
Seth Castillo offers Nora assistance and a place to stay. Against his better judgment, he falls in love with the headstrong young woman. But will he be able to convince her to stay in Death Valley and make peace with her estranged family? More importantly, will he be able to keep her alive so they can celebrate the holidays together?
I really enjoyed the setting, the fast-moving plot, and the romance interspersed with the suspense. I especially loved watching the characters develop throughout the story and seeing how they learned to put the past behind them, as we all often must do.
Christmas Crime Cover-Up is the fifth book in Dana Mentink’s Desert Justice series but can certainly be read as a stand-alone. This is definitely a novel that can’t be put down once the front cover is opened!

The author sure knows how to reel you in from the first chapter until the end! The reader always thinks they have it figured out, but the twists and turns keep you guessing all through the story! One of my favorite characters through this series has been Seth and I'm so glad he finally gets his own story and HEA. Earlier in the series, he was shot and almost died. It has been heartwarming to see him go through extensive therapy to get back his mobility and health. His deepest yearning has been to be wanted for who he is since his ex-fiancée left him. When Nora contacts him over Zoom about helping with a wayward donkey that is in his area, he is happy to help, and he's smitten from afar! She lives in Colorado, but she actually grew up in his town and is the sheriff's estranged sister. Nora has a boatload of issues from her youth! She's not planning on staying in town but soon, her and her friend are being targeted by a murderer and Seth is going to protect them! There is a lot of action, a lot of self-reflection & forgiveness and starting over. I enjoyed this story so much. These characters, along with all the other ones in the series, feel like family now! It's also great to learn more about Death Valley!

Christmas Crime Cover-Up is a fantastic addition to the Desert Justice series. The main characters are likable, and upon learning their background, their actions are very believable. I was hoping for that HEA for Nora and Seth, and author Dana Mentink delivered. I love the whole idea of rescuing wild donkeys and now am wondering if all donkeys like peppermints. I relished the closeness of the Duke family and thoroughly enjoyed the way the themes of forgiveness and reconciliation were woven into the story. The explosive action, suspense, and mystery in the book are thrilling. This is one of those books that you won't want to put down until you finish. I would definitely read more of this author's romantic suspense books and highly recommend them.
I received a complimentary copy and am sharing my opinion of this well-written book.

The Desert Justice series, authored by Dana Mentink, continues with book five, “Christmas Crime Cover-Up.” Each story builds upon the others with regard to the characters and their relationships but does come to a conclusion, so although I would recommend reading them in order, it isn’t required to enjoy the series. I have thoroughly enjoyed each book, but “Christmas Crime Cover-Up” is now my favorite. There is so much that I love about it, from the donkey connection to the seasonal setting to the intriguing cover itself, which instantly reminded me of Moses and the burning bush. God might not speak as directly as He did during that encounter, but He definitely communicates with the characters in the novel, just as He does with us.

In “Christmas Crime Cover-Up”, Mentink tells the story of Furnace Falls resident Seth Castillo and prodigal daughter Nora Duke, who left home abruptly after graduation and never looked back, taking her best friend Felicia Tennison with her. Now working with animal rescue in Colorado, capturing a feral donkey brings them home, but they soon become targets of an unknown assailant. Nora finds herself stuck in her old hometown with a killer and the helpful, affable Seth, bent on protecting her. However, as she sees it, “Prayers were for people who needed saving. Nora intended to do the saving herself.” Her independence and stubborn streak cause her to hold people at arm’s length, especially after the decisions she made in her past, and she avoids revealing her “weak and vulnerable places, places she did not want to acknowledge.” Can she really go home again, and does she even want to? As Seth, who always wants to do as much as he can for those he loves, acknowledges, “Need made people stay close for a while. Want was the thing futures were built on.” The same holds true for a relationship with God; someone can hold tightly to the Lord while they feel that they need help or intervention and then drift away afterward, but true faith means remaining close to God regardless of circumstances because they want to out of love, not just necessity.

I love the inclusion of the donkey, Bubbles, in this story, and because it takes place at Christmastime, I can't help but make a symbolic connection with the birth of Jesus in a stable. The theme of the prodigal and the burdens of the past speaks to a wide audience, counterbalanced by the man who always does the right thing but starts to think that he will always be overlooked. The best lesson in “Christmas Crime Cover-Up”, I think, is that although you can run away from home, you can never run away from God. He is always there, loving us and waiting for us to surrender to His love, no matter what the season.

What I think you should know:
Christmas Crime Cover Up by Dana Mentink is the fifth book in the Desert Justice series. While this book could be read as a standalone I recommend reading the prior books in the series as this book does give spoilers and updates on the characters that were featured. If you don’t have the ability to read all of them I highly recommend that you try to at least read Missing in the Desert prior to starting this one. This book features Seth Castillo and Nora Duke, who we have not previously met.

What you might need to know about:
Seth was shot in the head in Missing in the Desert, this book does discuss some of his feelings and his road to recovery.

What I think about this book:
I have fallen in love with the Duke family and Furnace Falls so imagine my surprise when we meet Nora ,the supposed black sheep of the Duke Family. After 10 years away she makes a return that she hoped would not last more than one night, but in true Mentink fashion things quickly escalate with a series of attacks on Nora and her best friend. Nora made a series of bad decisions as a teen and has allowed the decisions she made keep her from her family and faith. This was a very interesting perspective for a character. I enjoyed seeing how the Duke family handled it and how Nora responded. I loved getting to know more about Seth, he is a wonderful character (and it didn’t hurt that he drove a Bronco). I have loved every book in this series and can’t wait to see what happens next in Furnace Falls.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Celebrate Lit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

I have very much enjoyed reading this series. It’s so fun to follow a family and a location through a series. You get to see some of the characters again and again as they grow and change through the storylines.

So a fun fact in this book that I had no idea about is the wild burros in the desert. I’ve never been to the desert and it’s not something that I’ve studied before so I have enjoyed learning things from the books. I thought the donkey was a fun touch!

This is a great mystery with twists and turns galore. I read it through as fast as I could. I had to. You see my older teens have discovered that they enjoy reading the mysteries and suspense books that I enjoy and they’ll sneak them away while I’m reading them if I’m not careful! I’ve often been finding other bookmarks in my books lately.

We met Seth in earlier books in the series. I loved his character and what he’s been through and overcomes. Nora and Felicia are in danger and he’s set to protect them. He wasn’t set on falling in love but that might just be a bonus if he can keep them alive!

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received through Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.

This was such a good read. I love romantic suspense and this one was really great. I absolutely love when the writer makes the female lead stubborn and not so easy to save when she needs it....Nora is perfect! I absolutely loved and related to her.

There is action from start to finish and I truly loved it. This author is one of my absolute favorites and this may be my favorite book of hers to date! I loved seeing past characters and just adore this book.

5/5

LOVE Inspired books are really a favorite of mine. They are short books, but packed with great stories. Dana Mentink has become my favorite Author for the LOVE-Inspired Suspense book. I recently had the opportunity to read Christmas Crime Cover-Up by Dana Mentink. It is Book 5 in the Desert Justice series. I have read the first 4 books in this series and have been anxiously awaiting this book.

Nora Duke is an animal rescuer who loves her job. She has just returned home to Death Valley and someone tried to hit her with an ATV. She is now unsure coming home was the right plan. She returned home to help with a Pregnant Donkey Rescue and she is now at Seth Castillo’s Ranch for safety. Seth Castillo will do everything in his power to protect Nora and help her with the Rescue. Being back home brings back many family issues about why Nora left her hometown. Will Nora and Seth survive the holidays in hiding from the Criminals wanting to take Nora down? Will Seth be able to convince Nora to stay in Death Valley?

I have never read a book by Dana Mentink that I didn't like and this one has to be one of my favorites. The twists and turns in the book really kept me glued to the storyline. I really LOVED reading Seth and Nora's story. Seth is a GREAT character in the book and puts his life on the line to protect Nora as she is under attack. I LOVE how Nora is here to rescue the donkey, but it seems she is rescued with the help of Seth. Nora had to face her past and realize why the family issues were there. Seth also had some obstacles from his past that he took a deep look at. This book is one of Faith, Forgiveness, Romance, and looking to the future. The book reads good as a Stand Alone, but I would recommend reading from Book 1! I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone who loves Suspense Filled Rog romance books with a Faith aspect. AWESOME BOOK!

Christmas Crime Cover-Up is written by Dana Mentink. This is book 5 in the Desert Justince Series. I have read the whole series, but they can be read as a stand alone. I do not want to see this series end. I have enjoyed getting to know the Duke family. This one is probably my favorite so far. Nora, who left Furnace Falls after high school and has never looked back. She has built a life for herself in Colorado and works at a rescue facility. She has come back to Furnace falls with her friend. She is on the hunt for a donkey that is in bad shape. While she is in the process of capturing the donkey someone tries to hurt her.

Seth Castillo is grateful for Nora's assistance. He flies a drone to assist in the search and rescue of the donkey - he hears when an ATV trying to run down Nora. Seth finds himself with a deep desire to protect Nora on his ranch. Seth was introduced in a previous book and was shot and has been recovering. What he does not count on is the feelings that he has toward her - and is hurt when she makes it clear that once they get the donkey, she is heading back to Colorado.

It took me a bit to figure out who was behind the attacks - the author does a good job in laying out a few suspects. I loved Bubbles the donkey they were after - I wish I could pet her. In true Mentink fashion, you will get a lot of action and heartpounding suspense.

Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read a copy of this book - all thoughts are my own.

When I’m looking for a book that is inspirational with suspense and great characters this author is my go to. I have never been disappointed with her books and this one is one of my favorites from her. I love the setting of the series and have come to be intrigued enough to do some research on Death Valley.

In this installment we find a collection of characters that have something in common. They know each other but there are feelings of anger, pride and not letting go of the past that pushes this story to the limit. I loved the rescue that Nora and Felicity were part of. Bubbles is by far one of the best animal characters I’ve read. Who wouldn’t love to be around a donkey who wants to be loved and cared for? I wonder if I can talk my husband into getting a donkey?

The danger starts immediately when someone tries to run down Nora and Felicity as they are on a rescue to save Bubbles. It is not everyday you see an ATV in the desert at night, so who is out to do harm? The author gives us an adrenaline rush as Nora seems to be unwelcome at her home town. There are frictions between her brother, mother and herself which adds tension to the story . I can’t forget to mention that Nora hasn’t been back home in awhile and all those insecurities she had are coming back.

I enjoyed Seth and am happy to see him front and center in this story. He helps with the rescue which finds more drama than he wanted. Trying to keep Nora and her friend safe becomes a full time job. I liked his patience and his desire to see Nora reconcile with her family. Seth adds a layer of comfort to Nora which will become very important in the story.

Surrounded by a mystery the story is well written and I especially loved the theme of forgiveness and coming to terms with your past. Even though this book is in a series, it can be read alone and enjoyed without feeling that you are missing parts of a story. The ending is good and I was surprised at who was behind everything.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

Whew. Christmas Crime Cover-Up is fast-paced and action-filled. There’s risk, mystery, and romance. Three things sure to get my heart pumping.

I liked the characters in this book. Even the donkey. Haha Nora is interesting and so is her friend Felicia. And a going-back-home story always grabs my attention.

I wasn’t expecting the danger to pull me in, and a theme of forgiveness is one of my favorites in fiction. Seth is a unique hero. I love his growth, forbearance, and relationship with Nora. The romance was a little fast for me, but I still enjoyed it. This is my first story I’ve read with a Death Valley setting, and now I want to go there.

A pregnant wandering donkey, Christmas, and suspense all meet up in this novel when prodigal daughter and sister, Nora Duke comes back home to get said donkey. I know, just that information had me hooked on this novel trying to piece all of these pieces together.

Nora has not been back home in a long time, and she is estranged from both her mother and her brother, Jude, who just happens to be the chief of police. Even changing her name to her middle name can't hide the broken familial relations she has. She is also with her best friend Felicia, who has also come back home. However, someone does not want either woman to accomplish their goal or make it to Christmas alive. But why? With the help of Seth who has now recovered from his gunshot wound to the head, Nora will soon learn what family and love means again and that some bonds go deep.

In a town that I have enjoyed visiting, I am so glad for this continuation and that we get to see Seth again after his grievous injuries.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

Christmas Crime Cover-Up by Dana Mentink is the perfect inspirational holiday suspense novel to read this holiday season. It is the fifth book in the Desert Justice series and definite must read if you love inspirational romantic suspense.
When someone on an ATV tries to run Nora Duke down as soon as she returns home to Death Valley, Seth Castillo does everything he can to protect her which includes keeping her on his ranch until Christmas while they track down and stop the killer from his or her evil plan.
I really enjoyed this holiday book and look forward to reading more from the author in the future.

As is usually the case with Love Inspired Suspense novels, the danger and action began in Christmas Crime Cover-Up almost immediately and only took infrequent breaks along the way. Someone is trying to kill Nora Duke and her friend Felicity but no one seems to know who or why.

I enjoyed taking another trip to Death Valley and catching up with members of the Duke family as well as other characters from previous books in this series. It was also fun to meet new characters, especially Seth and Bubbles the donkey. As expected there were multiple twists and turns to the exciting plot that climaxed with a surprise villain. Just try and guess this one!

Nora’s visit to her hometown was intended to last just long enough to rescue a donkey but her plans changed drastically. She was reluctant to face her family and others in the community after her abrupt departure years ago. Although Seth had a few struggles of his own, he was compelled to act as Nora’s protector and offered his support and advice as they became better acquainted.

I loved how Nora’s attitude toward the Lord and her family changed over the course of this excellent story of forgiveness and reconciliation. I thoroughly enjoyed Christmas Crime Cover-Up and will continue to read any book Dana Mentink cares to write.

I’m never disappointed in a book written by Dana Mentink. She’s a master in suspense and intrigue. Death Valley, desert and Christmas doesn’t seem to go together but it made for a great story. Nora and Felicia together run a donkey rescue service. While tracking down a pregnant donkey, they are chased by an ATV with the driver intent on doing away with them, but why? They are back in the town where they grew up and others are suggesting that they leave before they are killed. Nora will not leave before their mission is accomplished. Lots of close calls, suspense and entertainment are woven into an interesting book that kept me prisoner until the very end. Does what’s happening have anything to do with the past? Or is this just a crazy person trying to get their kicks? If you’ve never read a book by Dana Mentink, what are you waiting for?

I am loving this author's books more and more. This one was just perfect for the season. Two women, a donkey and horse rescue, and explosives. What more could we have? Romance! With a donkey due to birth at any moment, and a killer on the loose this is going to be a Christmas to remember. I found this to be action packed, with plenty of suspense, great characters, and a message that reaches your heart. Themes are forgiveness, and dealing with your past, and that how we see God the Father is so often affected by how we view our Earthly father. Sometimes we have to work with a change of perspective. I loved how included the mystery was with this story, and would actually read it a second time!

I enjoyed getting to read Seth's story. He is such a gentle soul and I liked getting to know him better. It was also nice to see the rest of the Duke clan that I've gotten to know in the other books of this series. I found the book to be easy to read and with a nice biblical faith thread. I recognized one of the clues, but I didn't know how it fit into the story. It was nice to see the growth and change in the characters. I look forward to reading more books by Dana Mentink.

A fast paced adventure that kept me guessing, with each twist and turn!

Nora comes home for what is supposed to be a quick trip to pick up a donkey, but when she finds herself the target of a killer she takes refuge on Seth Castillo's ranch as they work to get to the bottom of the threats.

A well written read, and especially satisfying if you have read the others in the series to have a book about Seth after all he has been through. This book would also be enjoyable as a standalone. Seth is an amazing man, I admired his faith and perseverance to keep going after everything that has happened to him.

Riveting read with compelling characters, relationship building and friendships. A thrilling read, with twists that made it hard to put down. I loved revisiting the Duke family and hope that there are more stories in store for this family!

Wow. Author Dana Mentink had me in a cardiac workout. And that was just in Chapter one! Christmas Crime Cover-up will keep you on the edge of your seat, reading to see what happens next.

This is book five in the Desert Justice series but don’t let that stop you. I haven’t read books 1-4 and could follow this one just fine. I’m pretty determined, though, that I’m going to go back and read the others.

Strong, well developed characters and a really interesting story line gave this it’s intense feeling. Nora is a target and a prodigal. Seth is recovering from wounds, both physically and emotionally. Can they work together to save a donkey and catch a killer? Twists, turns, and a surprise ending making this book one you have to read if you enjoy a clean mystery. I highly recommend it!

This was a great romantic suspense. I loved how the story kept you on the edge of your seat the whole time. I liked that it wasn’t obvious who the bad guy was until the end of the story. I liked the pacing of the story and I liked the characters. I liked the Nora learned that people can forgive past mistakes. I liked seeing the turning to God that Nora experienced as she faced her past. I thought this story was well written and I really enjoyed reading it.

Having read the other books in the Desert Justice series, I looked forward to reading Christmas Crime Cover-Up by Dana Mentink. An ATV tries to run down Nora Duke, she realizes she should have never returned to Death Valley. She finds herself on Seth Castillo’s ranch with a pregnant donkey at Christmas time.

This story combines elements of suspense, faith, forgiveness, and overcoming the past. The author took twists and turns that surprised me, but proved to be well-developed. I loved getting to know Nora and Seth. So if you are looking for a Christmas novel or a suspense novel, check out this book for yourself.

Great characters and steady, interesting story plot that kept my interest from beginning to end. There were alot of (non graphic) action and suspense which kept me on the edge of my seat. I liked the ending and that it wasn't predictable.

I liked getting to know Jude, Seth, Felicity and Nora throughout and their interactions with each other. Great holiday book about love, forgiveness, second chances, faith and family. I have read the other Desert Justice by this author and have enjoyed them as well.

I would recommend this to anyone wanting a quick, easy to read, suspense book!

I just have to say that I'm so glad to see Seth get his story! And what a wild ride it is. Dana Mentink does such an amazing job bringing her stories to life, and this one is no different. She totally got me with the ending. Did not see that coming, and I loved every minute of the journey from page one to the end. Nora and Seth are like two bulls in a china shop. They just keep coming up against each other, and neither wants to give in to change. Nora is exceptional. The depth of her pain and all that she goes through in this book was really brought home and made me feel every moment. Seth has this way about him that is endearing but he's also no pushover, and I got goosebumps when he stepped into his role and fully accepted himself. I have read a lot of Dana’s books and I really enjoy them. She develops interesting characters and plot lines. This one was no exceptions but I will say I didn’t get into as much as I have other books until the end.

Wow, I never saw that end coming. It was a great twist and surprise. I knew something was up with this person but what it was was something I didn’t have a clue of.

As always not only are the main characters great but the surrounding characters lend a warmth to the story that will make you smile.

A copy of this book was given to me by Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.
