After recently finishing high school and thoroughly enjoying my French learning adventures... I decided to learn Spanish to quench my boredom and because it seemed like a cool thing to do. Evidently, I speak not a word of Spanish and have only scratched the very basics on Duolingo... my best friend says I am a 'fetus' in Spanish terms. So, we decided the best place to start was in the children's section with the bilingual edition of Richard Scarry! I read these in English as a kid and still fondly remember days spent perusing these pages. Enlightening experience returning after well more than a decade to the same books in a different language.
This book is beautifully illustrated, and the pictures certainly make for a more enjoyable experience. I really like the cats... but I can't for the life of me remember their names. By dividends of having images that are representative of the words, it's easier to connect the dots about the meaning of words (even if you do have the English translation right there). This book serves as a very good introduction to the most basic of Spanish vocabulary, which would definitely be used in a child's everyday life. I would say that some of the words are not overly relevant if you aren't a kid... but, hey, my bad for reading a children's book.
I do think that when it comes to learning vocabulary, it's quite important to grasp the pronunciation, and this is something this book could improve upon, as it had me saying things in a very French or English accent in my head... which I'm almost certain is wildly wrong. I also think, in comparison to Scarry's other words, it lacks a storyline which makes for a somewhat tedious read, but, hey, it takes a total of 10 minutes to read, so that's a small hindrance.
So, all in all, there's definitely other books that retain my interest for longer periods. However, having said that, I think this is a good place to start if you want to learn Spanish, and certainly a book you'd like to have on your shelf as a reference book for future days :)
