Yu Zhengdu joined a small start-up company that claimed to offer “life management services”……as a programmer.
On his first day in office, he received a phone call from a stranger: “Hello, I received a text message from your company that informed me of my reincarnation tomorrow……”
Yu Zhengdu: “……??”
Shang Que, the beautiful little boss, said, “New employee, welcome to the Hell organisation in the human world. A thousand years ago, I was known to the human world as the Ghost King of Luofeng Mountain.”
Yu Zhengdu: “……??” From then on, he was incredibly distressed about the development of Hell.
I haven't read a book this absurd yet still was executed in the most hilarious way, ever. For real. It just never cease to confuse the hell out of you, and maybe it's entirely possible to be thrown off so much by a book and if you happen to want to experience it, New Times, New Hell is perhaps the book you're looking for. It's just so...unexpected that I even wonder what the hell goes to the writer's brain when they're writing this lol.
It hold a similar premise with Guardian written by Priest, as it features a core story where the world is told to be divided by 3 (three) realms; Heavens, Hell, and Mortal. Rather than focusing on the romantic plot-line as what most danmei I've read did so far, it went more into the daily happenings of Luofeng, a modern 'Hell' in the mortal realm disguised as an internet start-up company which later branches into various areas that are necessary for their company's growth. The story started when Yu Zheng-du, a nearly-graduated college student happens to enter a shabby company which is apparently owned by the Ghost King of Luofeng Mountain, Shang Que, the current boss of 'Hell'.
As the title of the book goes, with the appearance of Yu Zheng-du who is a gifted computer developer in making and his Boss who's just the most powerful being in the entire Underworld, both him & Shang Que went through journeys of improving the system that manages the Underworld through advanced techology system that even left monks speechless. A lot of things that go on throughout were, as I've said before, absurd at its best. Nearly every chapter ends in a moment where you're left speechless nor laughing in stitches, there's literally no in-between lol. The characters are so shameless either on their own or being put together, and the whole novel just screams the chaotic vibes that never fails to outdo itself the more you read it.
While it does left you stupid sometimes, the chinese mythology reference used were intriguing enough to keep you hooked, and it's still an overall insanely entertaining read that you'd want to taste when you want to shut your brain off. I though Fake Slackers was funny, but this was on an entirely different level lmfao. It's so weird that you know it's not to be taken seriously, but then again, the characters are smart enough to be able to give the perfect reaction to any situation, and the romance, while being very subtle, is sweet enough to keep you giggling in constant.
However as it focuses itself on being a delightfully enjoyable read on the occurences that revolves around its story, the character writing definitely left a lot to be desired and wasn't able to be give proper care in the long run. Both Yu Zheng-du and Shang Que were well-written yet still lacks the backstory to enrichen the depth of their own character, and it was the only less satisfying bits I've found, with how the romance didn't actually start in a proper note due to lack of character depth itself that makes you occasionally uncovinced whether these two are indeed in love with each other for life. Well, most of the times it was just cute nonetheless and them being a powerful couple, I wasn't able to nitpick much from it. I'm just contented that it fulfilled what I was looking for by reading it; to be pleasantly entertained throughout.
So yeah, overall this was worth the try by any means. Even if you haven't try reading danmei before, it's still a perfectly fine read to dive through and a much amusingly written at that.
Read it online as it is already (brilliantly) translated by Chrysanthemum Garden here!
Shoutout to the ghost king ML being a loser gamer who whales to win video games. Poor MC is hard carrying their company.
A kind of slice-of-life-y webserial about two idiots turning hell into a successful socialist company through the power of technology. You only really need to know MC, Yu Zhengdu, and ML, Sheng Que. The side characters don't get a ton of personality and the author/translator conveniently reminds you what chapters they're introduced in when they pop up later. I liked that even though SQ is YZD's cheat card when a problem gets too tough, the mysterious/power aura gets popped almost immediately after. Each arc usually centers around some ghost making trouble, YZD hunting down said ghost and arresting them (lol), and somehow turning that into a money-making scheme. Lighthearted and fun, I binged it in 3 days.
When a modern day IT’er got hired by the Ghost King, hilarious moments ensued. The “ancient”concept of reincarnation, exorcism, and ghost summoning suddenly took on a twist in the hand of Yu Zhengdu. I’ve laughed so many times because of him.
Unfortunately, the plot got repetitive and draggy after some time. I was also disappointed with the way the romance and the character development took a backseat. So many potentials are wasted, and instead, we’re served slice-of-life events that don’t matter much. I really struggled with finishing after around 60% mark—when I realized there wouldn’t be more to the story than this. But I came so far (the dilemma! 😝). After a few breaks, I managed to push through till the end. Phew!
this really really grew on me. i wasnt sold with the premise but oh god this has definitively become one of my comfort favourites. i just absolute adore it, it was so fucking funny I nearly cried of laughter several times. I'm gonna miss it a lot :!) I really liked how it wasn't one long storyline but small plots and focused on the company and their relationship, just a such an easy relaxing read
“Wait, if you hire a prostitute you, become a chicken. What kind of chicken?”
“Those Daoists spend their lifetime learning and can only borrow the power of ghost. How did you directly borrow a ghost?”
“Young people these days only wanted to make money fast; being a sugar baby was nothing, but selling one’s own body to be the vessel of an evil ghost, that was a bit too much.”
“The big-headed ghost eagerly grabbed a single use bowl and fill it halfway with earthworms. He handed them over. “Here, try some. I grabbed these from my grave. Guaranteed no additives. The texture is soft and they have high protein content. They can also increase your masculinity……”
“What are you two doing?” “Oh, I’m teaching him how to take his eyeballs out.”
“You even managed to get pecked in the spirit by a goose.”
I couldn't stop laughing in almost every chapter. The mood jumps from serious to hilarious in seconds depending on how bad Yu Zhengdu and his boss's brainwaves don't match up lmao.
There are so many great aspects about this book, but I'm sleep deprived and light-headed, so here's a basic list of all of the things I liked about this book: - Openminded, enthusiastic, and hilariously smart main character Yu Zhengdu - Gaming addict and easily misunderstood CEO male lead who only LOOKS like your typical iceberg CEO trope - Refreshing and hilarious take on outdated religion, hell, and cultivation - Super cute and funny side characters - Modern problems requires modern solutions lmao - Programmer stereotypes and jokes - Ghosts need social interaction too
I read this based on my search. And boy I regret just reading it now. It's funny and quite different than the others. While most of the Male Lead have RICH, dominant, overbearing attitude. This one is...POOR. The only thing I regret is that not only some chapter left unexplainable, it is also leave some plot hole.
Loved it silly cute slice of life. Will just leave my pro and con here
Pro: he is Reddit famous They cute and silly I love underworld shit Slow burn Over powered male lead with secrets (he silly) Them raising peppa the goose is hilarious
Contra: some parts are boring because they elaborate to much Feels like sailor moon the 90. Anime
when heaven and hell collaps, gods no longer had power and disappear.ML (the ghost king) trying to survive and make new underworld in realm world.ML rules the underworld, maintain the law and order for all ghost netizen.ML is very responsible and capable CEO but he is a gamers too, very competitive and proud.ML is typical wife slave, only show his soft side in front of MC. MC is a genius programer, always think out of the box, have a high sense of justice and the important thing is love to pampering ML. love all the employee, eventhough they are ghost they all very cute.MC and ML adoptive daughter is a cinnamonroll, adorable and precious. when MC and ML solving the "ghostly" problems they still manage to make it funny and hilarious.i can't stop laugh while reading this story.
This is a pretty fun story that mixed tradition with modernization. I think the authors idolatry of mobile phones, the internet, and fandoms is a bit naive, but it's her book - maybe in it there's no group think and fake news and extremism.
There's also a lot of nationalism in this book, so for people who can't bear the idea that another country might want to boast about themselves, this isn't a good read.
Otherwise, it's a pretty cute story. Slow romance based on some misunderstandings. There's a couple of supernatural mysteries that get resolved, and a surprising amount of face slapping. I guess the moral in the end is that humanity is pretty resilient and adaptable. And many people can change for the better given the opportunity and training.
I had such a fun time reading this! It was funny and ridiculous at times but the plot was solid. Luckily I was familiar with the concepts and terms that were used in this novel otherwise I would've been quite confused throughout the entire story. I really liked Yu Zhengdu (MC) and Shang Que's (ML) relationship and how they were more powerful together although they were both powerful as individuals. The development of their relationship which was related to the growth of the company was such a delight to read about too. The adventures they went on while being true capitalists were well thought out and the resolutions were always neat and tastefully done. I also liked the relationships they shared with the other side characters, it really made the entire story more wholesome.
A fun little Gary Stu comedy story about an up and coming developer who accidentally finds himself working for Hell to help them modernize their services and the shenanigans he gets up to with the Ghost King of Luofeng Mountain. I had a great time reading it for the most part but the constant introduction of new services/clients got a bit tiresome and I did end up struggling to drag myself through the last 40 chapters of so. It had a good conclusion though and was enjoyable.
This novel is just a good…. The comedy plot, the plot, the characters, the word building all are so good. I love the main CP so much. Yu Zhengdu and Shang Que are so fit together, image and characteristics wises. I don’t get why there are people who doesn’t like SQ, he’s funny. YZD’s thinking is just gold hahaaa 4.8⭐️ a bit unsatisfied with the reason of SQ was sealed in the Chaos realm. But overall, I love this story.
I dropped at Chapter 30... I really couldn't carry on reading. I wanted to like it because I think the concept is quite fun, but it is too flat. The story unfolds in a very repetitive way, like ghost appears, it is funny, gets resolved. There is no plot or character development. I don't feel anything for any of the characters. Although it is quite funny, it's not funny enough for me to keep reading. :(
Shout out to the writer for making me believe the absurdity of the story… if someone ever ask me to imagine a new hell I wouldn’t have been able to come out with such an incredible way to make it modern and still maintain the tradition or essence of the hell work environment… lots of traditional information but in a really good storytelling that even knowing it’s not possible I could perfectly envision all of it in the author portrayed
This book is one of the best books that I have read! The elements of supernatural and science interweaved together is so so good and well-written! The humour is very Chinese-y but it still translates well into English and I have laughed out loud in every chapter! Thank you to the author for giving us such a great book and to the translators for doing a job well done.
3.5 rated up This was an enjoyable and funny read. I really enjoyed the concept of modernism and technology being used to deal with ghosts. The MC and the ML's relationship is well developed and super cute to follow along. This was also really funny and there was a good amount of face slapping. Some parts can be a bit gorey. But I enjoyed the cuteness and the humor.
Why the fuck do I always finish books at like 2am. Is it enough of a review if I say that I made Ao3 open up a NTNH section so I can post fanfics? Sometimes slow, ridiculous in every way, but I wouldn’t have it any other way and full recommendation here coming from a Computer Scientist. Goodnight
