Magic Rises

Blood magic is an abomination.

Those who wield it work dark deeds.

Never let a Blood Witch live.

My name’s Lucy Driver, I work three jobs to make ends meet. I’ve perfected the art of being entirely normal, hiding in plain sight to protect myself and those around me. The witches think I’m a dud, the vampires have ignored me, and the shifters don’t think I’m worth their time. But when a Blood Witch appears in my city attacking supernatural children, I have to risk exposing my secrets to stop the witch's plans.

No matter the outcome, the life I’ve carefully crafted for myself in Wayland City is forfeit. If I’m lucky I can stop the Blood Witch before other, more deadly, supernatural forces discover my secrets.

I’ve never been the lucky type.

Magic Rises is the first book in the Magic Returns series. It’s full of vampires, shifters, and witches. If you enjoy urban fantasy stories with plenty of action, snark and a kick-ass heroine, then you’ll love reading Magic Rises. Grab your copy today!

almost…?

This could probably be a four star read, but for me it would require a few solid rounds of editing- not so much wrong words used or grammatical errors, though there’s a few- more that while the bones of the story and characters are decent, the writing has that ‘young writer’ feel, like plot armour, ridiculously overpowered hero, everyone loves them except, inexplicably, the villain, who ultimately is just jealous… that said, I probably couldn’t write it better myself, and I’m not prepared to put in the time and effort required to try. As long as you don’t get annoyed by my little niggles, if you liked the blurb there’s a solid chance you’ll thoroughly enjoy the book.

Oh, and there’s a possible love triangle or maybe ménage situation in the making, but it doesn’t come to a head in this book, so I can’t tell if it’s drama and heartbreak in the making or if it’ll be a very chill little harem of guys (I know it doesn’t technically count as a harem without one more, but her best friend [female] is supposedly in love with her and there’s a few attractive guys floating around, so you never know)

I wanted to love this book…. I liked it ok, but could not love it…. There were quite a few things that nagged at me…

1 - channeling IA ( the Goat)…. Sure the hidden legacy concept is an established trope that goes beyond IA, but it’s so obvious here (even book titles) and not awesomely done

2 - the wolf thing was so obvious …. To the point where the big reveal was positively cringey

3 - unnnecessary repetition to explain in cryptic terms why she’s hiding, why no one can know who she is, why she probably won’t survive this and that’s ok, etc…

4 - not feeling anything…. At all.. nothing…. Not when a key character dies, not when she’s falling for those guys…

5 - love triangle w shifter and vamp… and no clue (beyond physical appearances) why she’s interested in either of them…

But apparently I liked it enough for three stars…. I finished it…. I’ve definitely read worse…. And I’m about the start the next one…. So….

frustrating

I enjoyed reading the first half of the book but by 3/4 mark it just stagnated and zzzzzzzzz I ended up just skipping to the end

Awesome character, decent world, needs am editor

I'm giving this story five stars because that's what you do when you find out just-starting-out author with amazing potential who is well worth reading. You work the algorithm to get her noticed.

This book is about a kick-ass powerful woman who is keeping herself small to hide.

This book is about the importance of accepting help and trusting your friends.

I like competent heroines with snark. This book definitely has that.

It is not, however, flawless. It needs an editor. Desperately. At the very least it needed one more read through, but another full draft with a good editor could have raised this from merely very good to excellent. I'm a little mad/feel a little cheated.

And now I'm off to read the next book, which hopefully has been seen by an editor.

Because when you get back down to it, it's still a good book. Glad to have found this author, looking forward to her career.

This story pulls readers in with its fast-paced action, high-stakes mystery, and intricate world full of unique lore. It gives just enough away to keep pages turning as the characters face down not only challenging foes, but the complicated feelings rising inside them. Add in the complexities of keeping long-held secrets intact, and this book keeps readers on their toes from beginning to end. Told in a single POV with a possible love triangle or throuple situation, this series looks to become more interesting as more of the story unfolds.

It has to be mentioned that this book needs a good few more round of editing to polish it up. It’s not unreadable, but there were enough mistakes to distract from the story.

All in all, this was an engaging, intriguing story that would be phenomenal with more editing.

It's unusual for me to find a paranormal book that I give 3 stars to in Kindle Unlimited, but this deserved it.
There are some editing issues that need to be sorted out, using fair instead of fare, that sort of thing.
However I liked the writing style and I liked the way supernaturals are "out" to the human population.
There is a love triangle, which is not something I am hugely fond of, and it seems a bit odd that Lucy doesn't realize that the new dog/wolf she is walking/running is not all that he seems to be, but overall I liked the story and it kept me hooked in.
Seems like this is a relatively new author and I feel like there's a good chance she will grow as she writes and give some of the big names a run for their money.

Well if you've ever read Alice Worth then you are going to have a lot of deja vu. I'm not saying that's necessarily a bad thing- I love Alice Worth and this was different enough as to be interesting and original, but not a radically different book.

I enjoyed the world building, the characters were interesting, Lucy (fmc) was awesome and the plot surrounding her was sensible and fun. The twists were a little painfully obvious, but it wasn't cringey or unbearable.

Overall, solidly enjoyed this series. I would note that I strongly felt that there should have been a third book- it felt like the author had been gearing up to write it in the second book, but got bored with the series? Sad times, I would have enjoyed.

Felt a lot like this author was trying to piggyback on the success for another author by choosing both the title of this book and the name of the series from the other authors published works.

Like the other reviewer mentioned, lots of silly errors that should have been picked up by an editor. The big twist (the wolf) was so bleeding obvious the main character seemed utterly stupid not to realise.

Main character is SO SPECIAL, so POWERFUL, so PRETTY, so HUMBLE. Two super powerful supes are so in love with her cause she is just so super special.

That said, I did manage to get through it, but won’t be returning to this world or this author.

This was good. There were spots where the typos were distracting because the sentences were hard to piece together (e.g. words out of order or missing). But the world building was interesting and the main character was intriguing. The romance was… there? I didn’t totally buy it. The two love interests were engaging but her interactions with them didn’t seem to fit into the same book. And it was never explained why they were both drawn to her nor was the dynamic between the three of them explored. She just kept kissing everybody. I think if the conflict went a little deeper and the dialogue was ironed out a bit this would be a four star read for sure.

Honestly, it has a great premise and interesting moments with potential
However, after only 75 pages in, I just couldn't anymore. The FMC is ridiculously overconfident, and everyone loves her but truly has no substance and conflicting ambitions and goals. The intro was incredibly rough, and I felt very much rushed with someone shoving half-baked exposition down your throat. I also noticed incorrect sentences or just incredibly confusing dialogue. The only reason this isn't a 1 star is because I do see some potential or moments that were pretty decent writing.

3.5 star for me. This book has a great story, it felt very much like a Kim Harrison style where the main character is a badass lead who is solving a mystery/fighting the bad guys (or girl in this case). I felt like parts of the story could have been more developed. For example, I enjoyed the love triangle idea but I wanted to know why they were so into the main character. Overall I found the story interesting and the magic world/system great.

Loved it

This is a new author for me, and I am so glad I found her! I loved this book! Lucy is a butt-kicking, stubborn, quirky lady, hiding from her past. As a threat against the shifter kids in her city comes to light, she is the only one who can stop it. So excited to read the next book!

Great Read

When I first saw this book, I thought it would be just like all the other books out there, but boy was I wrong. I didn’t want to put this book down. But now I’m sad because I really can’t wait until the next installment about this story.

I was very conflicted on what to rate this. In the end I went for 4 stars because I enjoyed it but word of warning, it is FULL of grammatical and punctuation errors. I’m guessing the author didn’t spring for an editor on this one which is a shame.

absolutely great start to a series

Loved this book. MC was likeable and the story was in the moment fast. Looking forward to getting more of the backstory in future books.

Good universe. Good characters. A few plot holes and some average editing made me drop from a 4 to a 3 star review. Very similar to the Mackenzie Green series by JS Kennedy.
