Once Upon a Scot #1

A Scot of Her Own

Rate this book
Fire and ice. Powerful forces on their own. Combined? Invincible passion.

When mighty Thorburn MacDougall, commander of the Lord of Argyll’s warriors, overpowers the canniest Norwegian he’s ever battled, he rips off the man’s helm to savor the look of horror right before delivering the killing blow. But the canny Norwegian isn’t a man at all. She’s a blue-eyed beauty with fire in her eyes and fury in her soul.

Adellis Bjørnsdóttir weighed the risks and found them worth it. Freedom. At any cost. The only other escape is death, and she’s not ready to give up yet. But the Gallóglaigh warrior, the fearsome Scottish bear she allows to capture her, isn’t the cruel tyrant she thought to endure long enough to secure safe passage to Scotland. He’s protective. Considerate. Stubborn as an ox. And entirely too tempting.

Honor. Chivalry. Outwitting traitors, murderers, and old enemies? All easy enough. But trusting? Finding the courage to love? Therein lies the challenge.

Note: This series is part of Dragonblade's Flame line, so this is a sexy, steamy, and scorching-hot read with multiple sex scenes. Be advised.

Loving this new series.
So good, filled with action, and romance ,with some excellent and interesting characters.
Maeve always excels at these highland based stories and I can honestly say she’s becoming one of my favourites.
Thorburn and Adellis are so chemistry driven, they make for a very addictive read.

If that’s the sort of escape your after this is definitely the book you should be reading.

I enjoyed this one, there wasn’t as much angst or drama as I’d expected. But it made for a nice entertaining romance.

Maeve Greyson has started a new series featuring medieval highlanders and Norwegian warriors. I enjoyed this story and liked that the female MC was fierce and not afraid to fight for her happiness. The story was easy to read and all the supporting characters were interesting and I can’t wait to see which of them gets featured in this series.

I was a little frustrated with the lack of angst and the ease these MCs moved from battle to battle. Situations throughout the story were just resolved too easily for my liking. Add in the instant love aspect after the MCs meeting in battle, just not enough strife. Yes, I guess I like my MCs to work a little harder for their HEA. 👀

Thorburn MacDougall is from Scotland and is commander of the Lord of Argyll’s warriors. He fights what he thought was a man and read to dive in for the kill until he removes her helm discovering it’s a beautiful woman. It turns out it is the beautiful Adellis Bjørnsdóttir, a Norwegian woman from Norway. Now he ends up making her a prisoner something their clan never did as it was just another mouth to feed. He calls or the spoils of war!

Thorburn does not realize this woman allowed him to capture her as she wanted freedom no matter the consequences and need a way to get into Scotland. She was expexting this Gallóglaigh commander to be cruel and abusive, but he was quite the opposite. He was honorable, kind, caring and protective but with an obstinate determination!

The attraction to this handsome warrior is immediate but can she trust him with her life. As death was not the answer for this Norwegian woman. This chemistry between Thorburn and Adellis absolute sizzles off the pages with a passion that is so hot!

This is a new series by Maeve Greyson that is sizzling hot. This riveting, romantic adventure filled with all the element the draws readers in with, murder, traitors, enemies, betrayal, mistrust, intrigue, passion and love. An awe inspiring story that I couldn’t put down, Will Adellis ever open her heart and bare he soul to Thorburn? If she does will he accept her delemma. Read and find out .

In medieval Scotland, Thor and his men are attacked by Norwegians. Lured by a warrior into the forest, the battle ends when he discovers the warrior is a woman. Intrigued he takes her prisoner, something he doesn't normally do. Adellis has reasons to be in Scotland. It may be possible this warrior would help her gain her freedom. Seduction is her weapon, but love will be the key to win the warrior's heart. Her vile brother, her twin, isn't done with her yet. Between the warrior she is and the bear she loves, fate may be on her side.
A short novella with romance between battle scarred warriors. Heat level 3.

The Plot
I didn’t feel much romance between Adellis and Thornton, but, without a doubt, I believed their love and relationship. There was sex, but, what it lacked in romance, it made up for in lust! And there was protection and compassion, but not a lot of wooing. So I’m not sure how she did it, but I devoured this book and believed all of it! The action and adventure were perfectly excited and keep me glued to the page. There were twists I didn’t see coming but none I balked at for ‘trying to hard’. This is my first by Ms. Greyson and I’m eager to grab some of her other books.

The Heroine
Adellis is a kick-ass Warrior and has been to hell and back at the hands of her father and her brother. The only way she can escape them is to allow herself to be taken prisoner by the Scottish. It’s a great plan to get her into Scotland and her freedom, but one look at her Scottish Bear and one night of his kindness and protection (which she has never had a man do) and she can’t imagine leaving him. I loved Adellis; she was a breath of fresh air and a nice change from the usual heroines. She didn’t necessarily need rescuing or protection but she allowed Thornton to do both and enjoyed it!

The Hero
Thornburn is a tough Scottish Warrior who plans on never marrying or doing anything other than fighting for Lord Argyll. But taking Adellis prisoner on the battlefield will change all that. He is not like most Scottish Warriors; he has more honor and compassion, refusing to steal or harm women and children. He treats those he fights with, his brothers and his fellow soldiers, with honor and values each of them.

The Steam
There were a couple of scenes but not too graphic or even romantic matter of fact.

Tropes

A delicious enemies-to-lovers romance set in 1273 Scotland

Thorburn leads his small army against a rogue band of insurgents that is led by an especially cruel and delusional narcissist. Not one to ever take prisoners, he removes the helmet of the small but fierce warrior who almost took him down, only to find that she's quite a dangerous handful.

Adellis knows that being taken captive by the enemy is her only chance to escape her barbaric brother, but she now has to escape the Scottish bear that has her chained in his tent. I loved how unapologetic she was about using whatever weapons - physical or otherwise - she could find to defend herself. I loved every bit of her character - her compassion, her fearlessness, her determination to never again be at the mercy of a man.

I loved the secondary characters, especially how the author highlighted the fact that heroes come in all shapes and sizes, and a man doesn't have to wield a sword to prove his worth. This may be a short novella, but it's packed with loads of action and all the passion a reader could hope for. Thor and Adellis finally bring justice to their region and are rewarded with a very satisfying HEA. I couldn't have loved this more, and highly recommend it for anyone who loves Scottish romances. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

A fast-moving Highland romance that has all the elements of a great love story, this novel had me enthralled from the opening pages. Thorburn and his men come under attack and they respond with deadly efficiency. That is until Thor finds himself face to face with a warrior that outwits him at every turn even if it means employing deadly tactics. Gaining the advantage and subduing his captive, Thor goes in for the kill, but his hand is stayed when he discovers that the warrior he is holding down is no man, but a beautiful woman with fury in her eyes. Thor has his own injuries to contend with but as he observes his hostage he finds his interest piqued at the vulnerability that lies beneath her facade and her willingness to give aid when he needs it most. At the same time, Thor is not at all like the warrior she believed he would be but rather is considerate, kind, and generous. Unfortunately, Adellis has her own enemies, and making an escape from their clutches is not as easy as she thought it would be. Together they overcome and the novel does come to a very successful conclusion. I received a copy of this book as a gift through Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.

The start of a new series & what a page turner it was, I devoured it in a sitting. Strong characters, fast paced story, sizzling chemistry all made for a very enjoyable read & to cap it all Highlanders & Norwegians. I loved that Thorburn & Adellis actually talked so there weren’t misunderstandings nor angst, they did fall each other hard & fast but it was a novella. I look forward to the rest of the series

A great start to a new series. Maeve Greyson writes a highlander like no other. Few can match a highland warrior but a fierce Norwegian warrior who happens to be a woman, just might be the match Thorburn MacDougall didn’t know he was looking for. Though he does not believe in prisoners of war, he can’t help but take her. The fast attraction of these two is intense and wonderfully written. As is the ensuing battles to keep them together. Despite the fierce strength of Adellis Bjornsdottir, it is beautiful to see her accept Thor’s protection, strength and love. Creating a true partnership between them. Fighting side by side, protecting one another. The love story is strong, but so are the epic battles waged to win that love. The ending scene sets up the next book to perfection making you eager for the the continuation of this Highland family’s story. Can’t wait to see what is in store for Thor’s womanizing brother Ross.

It's always a thrill when Maeve Greyson writes a new book, this author is a "must read" for me! I thoroughly enjoyed this latest story and I loved the characters....well, except for Adellis' twin brother! lol I also loved how Adellis and Thorburn first meet, talk about a tense situation!!

All Adellis wants is freedom from her tyrant twin brother and if she has to be captured by an enemy to gain that freedom, then so be it. When Thor makes her his captive, she soon realizes he's not the brute she thought he would be. As attraction turns to love, not only do they have to fight to have a future together, they must also battle the enemies and traitors in their midst.

No excess drama, well written steamy scenes and with Scotland as the background, this was well worth the read. I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

The Bear and The She Warrior:
The enticing book cover that depicts just what this story and its characters are all about.
A gripping fast paced beautiful love story with powerful characters had my complete attention.
Thornburn, his 3 brothers and the warriors are looking to take out the Norwegian invaders who
just attacked and a fierce battle ensued, but the capture of the woman warrior Adellis
brings forth some new problems for Thornburn.
Being a captive that is beautiful, intelligent, intriguing along with an immediate attraction
is going to cause some difficulty for the big warrior known as The Bear.
The romance turns quickly to an all-encompassing powerful love that takes your breath away.
Many intense moments, battles, some sweet romantic situations and more.
A wonderful story that was thrilling and enjoyable to read.
I would like to recommend this story to romance readers.

I liked this story. Adellis was such a strong, resourceful woman and wanted nothing more than a safe place to live. Thorburn was quite a warrior and leader. His loyalty to his men under his command and those who worked on his home gave him an almost sweetness to offset the strength. With sneaky family, danger, and plenty of honest steamy scenes, this was a wonderful journey.

I am ready for the rest of the series. A Scot of her Own was an excellent start to this series and as complete as the story was, I want more of these characters. The chemistry between Adellis and Thorburn could melt the page. It was there from the beginning. Not only were those two main characters beguiling , his brothers ,Ross and Vallen were as well. I am sure their stories will be just as captivating. There is hot, steamy well-written sex scenes. I read this book in one sitting. It was hard to put down.

As a romantic at heart reviewer, I have a mind of my own and feel compelled to always use it, folks. So here goes ... Something early on took place between Thor and Adellis, the main couple, that did not set well with me. It irritated me so much I had to fight off an overwhelming urge to stop reading in silent protest right then and there. To be honest, I'm still obviously harboring resentment. You see, I did not think the inappropriate, uncalled for graphic smexcapade (shortly after meeting/while still complete enemy strangers, adversaries) should have been thrown in, especially considering the circumstances. It felt lecherous and wrong on both their parts. We are to believe it was uncharacteristic for him, but, well, not so much for her. Her sad past was meant to justify it, but for me, it did the opposite. I strongly felt it exploited her further, IMO.

I'm all for strong, resilient heroines who can protect themselves. It was cool she had not just fighting skills but a brain to boot regarding healing, etc. Despite being a warrior like princess, Adellis was more like a damsel in distress on the run and in serious need of help. Thor, her unlikely hero, did soon become protective of her and fall for her in a verra big way. I just can't say I was comfortable with how it all started off. For quite some time, the lack of established emotional connection had me cringing when they even touched. I guess you could say the cart was put before the horse here in establishing a relationship.

Of course, I'm glad they eventually prevailed and bonded on all levels. Bad guy got what he deserved, naturally, and they got their HEA.

I've read and enjoyed at least five other books by this author. Time will tell if this "fly in the soup" element was a fluke or if something similar will surface again. Regardless, that mind of my own I just referenced will be sharing it with you once again, my fellow romance book loving friends.

Romance Safety Gang:

Title: A Scot of Her Own, Series: Once Upon a Scot (Book 1), Author: Maeve Greyson, Pages: 142, stand-alone but part of series, alpha warrior leader hero, warrior skills but damsel in distress heroine, definitely non-virgin main couple, some graphic smex scenes, have smex while still strangers/enemies, nudity scenes, opposite sides but 1 same enemy.

Book 1 - A Scot of Her Own (Thorburn & Adellis)
Book 2 - A Scot to Have & To Hold (Ross & Elise)
Book 3 - A Scot to Love & Protect

One of the biggest reasons I enjoyed this book so much was that the two main characters were adults and they fucking acted like it. They actually talked to each other when there was a misunderstanding and they did not keep secret why they did something. It was so refreshing! I hate how far too many authors have the characters act like they can't tell their partner anything just so it'll stir up more drama. They're adults. They can use their words.

I really liked Thor and Adellis together. Thor is constable and is currently leading his men to fight against the Northerners who are blatantly breaking the peace treaty. He finds himself fighting a small warrior, swift on their feet, and who clearly knows how to fight. But imagine his surprise when he finally bests them and removes their helm only to discover it's a woman. And killing a woman goes against his honor. But he's never taken a prisoner before either. Even so, he is fascinated by this feisty hellcat and takes her along as his prisoner. A position that doesn't even last the night.

Adellis has quite a tragic background. And this is one of the points I liked with her just telling Thor why she is there. Instead of holding her tongue and being defiant, Adellis tells him of the cruelties she has suffered at her own brother's hands and why him taking her as a prisoner is exactly what she had been hoping for. Her honestly only adds to everything that Thor already admired her for, and he frees her.

Of course, there was an instant attraction between these two. But this was one of the very rare times that I didn't care. At all. Because these two are so similar to each other, they just worked together perfectly as a couple. It's this attraction, and the fact that Adellis actually feels safe for once, that she chooses to stay with Thor.

Unfortunately, her brother will not her go that easily and he sets a trap to capture her again. In a most painful way. Needless to say, Thor is livid when he returns to his camp to find it ablaze and his woman nowhere to be found. He knows he can't just rush in to save her, but boy does he want to. It's a few days later when him and his men find the enemy camp with Adellis inside. But her strength and determination surprise him again before he can even be the one to save her.

Together again, these two finally go face off against Adellis's brother. I will say that it was rather anti-climatic, but all in all not necessarily bad how that all goes down. But now they must face the Lord that Thor serves and that scares Adellis the most. Everything works out in the end, in a way that had me chuckling a couple times, and we even get a nice epilogue of a few years later.

This was definitely a short, enjoyable read for me. So it wouldn't be too hard to get me to check out any more of this series.

A Scot of Her Own by Maeve Greyson is a short but powerful read. It is much more gritty and raw than many of her books, but that is probably due to the presence of Northmen (Vikings), who seem to engender that sort of story. Thorburn MacDougall was the constable of the troops of the Lord of Argyll, who was the liege to the king of Scotland. He exerted strict discipline over his warriors, including his two brothers, Valan and Ross, and he and his men were trying to enforce the treaty. All of a sudden he spotted a lone warrior, small but scrappy. He took him to the ground and pulled of his helm to see the man's face as he died, and it turned out to be a woman . . . a beautiful woman. He normally did not take prisoners and never allowed his men to harm women and children, but she was now. While trying to wrangle her she kicked him in the knee, with a boot that had a spike on it, covered in poison. He would have to get the medic, this wound being above the powers of his knave, Hendry. When the healer, Marta, was called from the village, the girl, Adellis, spoke against her methods of healing her own wound and Thor's, as well.

This was a case of love at first sight, although neither of them knew it at the time. Neither had any experience with love. When their best spy entered the encampment with a story of the enemy, Thor was quick to follow up, only realizing later it was a trap. He raced back to camp to find it in flames and Adellis gone. Trying not to go off half-cocked, he sent another spy, a novice, to track the Northmen. He had to get her back. Hopefully, alive. This was cunning emotional capture of a strong man, determined to stay on top and always win, and then, brought low by a small woman. She was a woman who had been used and abused and lived by her own wits. She hated her brother and wanted him dead but had promised her mother it would not be by her hand.

Thorburn MacDougall is a fierce Highland warrior that takes no prisoners. In a battle against Norwegian forces, he fights against a warrior that meets him at every turn, but when he finally gains advantage and rips off his helm to deliver a killing blow, he's shocked to discover its a woman. He and his brothers have vowed never to hurt women and children, but what can he do with this fierce fighter other than claim her as his own.
Adellis Bjornsdotter has lived a life of abuse at the hands of her father and brother, and now they're determined to marry her to a powerful ally that's known torturing and killing his wives. She needs to be taken prisoner and given Safe passage to Scotland. She never expected to feel protected and even loved by her conquering warrior.
I loved that the MC in this book was a strong warrior in her own right, refusing to be the pampered and coddled woman left at camp. The story progressed way too fast though and there was no room for romance, though a lot of steamy scenes. I thought the book could have benefited being a little longer. It was good enough to make me want to finish the series.

I enjoyed this story with all the characters that were within this book. The main characters were Thorburn MacDougall and Adellis Bjornsdottir.

Thorburn MacDougall is a commander. He commands the Lord of Argyll's warriors. He has two brothers who are also within the warriors. They are looking for any Norwegians to battled with. While looking, they find some. While battling the capture, a Norwegian woman that was pretending to be a man. He doesn't hurt women.

Adellis Bjorsdottir wants her freedom from her brother. She decides to run away with a small group of men. But they are attacked by Galloglaigh warriors. Now, she is captured and has to find a way out of their camp. But the more she gets to know their leader, the more she not sure she wants to leave.

This was a fun story to read. It had action, adventure, and drama throughout. There were a few giggles within. This is the first book in a series of three.

I received a complimentary copy via Netgalley. This is my honest, unbiased opinion.

WOW what a Fantastic Story! Adellis and Thorburn (aka Scottish Bear) are believable and so realistic with such depth and individuality it's easy to relate to. A Scot of her Own is the first in the series Once Upon a Scot and I can't wait to read the next one. It's a rollercoaster ride that brims with tension building twists and turns, trials and tribulations, danger, revenge and suspense that will keep you sitting on the edge of your seat. Maeve Greyson has given readers a book that is well-written, filled it with great cast of characters that come off the pages and pull you into this emotional ride that keeps you involved until the very end, sizzling passion, fast paced and great dialogue. With setting descriptions and action sequences that are wonderfully vivid that brings the story to life and as the uncertainties escalates the suspense builds and danger abound which brings this read together perfectly.

Thank you to Netgalley, Dragonblade Publishing, and Ms. Greyson for the opportunity to read an ARC of this title. An honest review was requested but not required.

I somehow missed going in that this was a novella. I kept thinking, wow, they’re moving awfully quickly, and then noticing with surprise that I was already 2/3 of the way finished. Okay, a novella, now I guess it makes sense. There wasn’t a ton of plot (it’s a real feat to pull off a reasonably finished plot in a novella) but the characters were well drawn and the love story (while basically instantaneous) was fulfilling. I especially liked the very early medieval setting, with the Scottish/Norse terminology and roles. I would definitely try another book by Ms. Greyson but I think I would prefer a full-length novel; there’s more time for the relationships (and plot) to grow organically.

A Scot of Her Own is a tale as old as time... Boy meets warrior on the battlefield, warrior is revealed to be a girl, girl tries to kill boy, boy takes girl as prisoner, and then they have a passionate hook-up in the middle of the night, Classic!

This historical romance is bursting with energy (and muscles), a kickass heroine, and a tough Scottish warriot with a heart of gold. Adellis and Thor have an undeniably explosive chemistry from the very start and it is so much fun to witness their relationship develop in the midst of the violent conflict surrounding their story. A Scot of Her Own is a fast-paced historical romance perfect for anyone the loves adventure, love at first fight, and hunky Scottish Warriors!

A Scot of her own is a short Historical Romance that has been expertly written and crafted to deliver an enticing adventure taking place in the year 1272. Scottish warrior Thorburn MacDougall is in the midst of a battle and about to vanquish his enemy opponent when he discovers a SHE instead of a HE under his enemy’s helm. Norse woman Adele Bjornsdottir has her reasons for concealing her identity and fighting in the battle, most important of which is her plan to escape the clutches of her tyrannical brother.
Now a prisoner of Thorburn a battle of wills soon ensues along with an attraction for each other that will bring about complications, political intrigue and a fiery hot passion that when combined make this narrative a very engaging read!

Lethal but gentle warrior heroine done right!

I really lived that although the h had secrets they were not kept from the H throughout the book. It was very early on in the story that she revealed her secrets to the H and allowed them to work together instead of how so many novels make it where one party is hiding something through half or even 90% of the book. Those always irk me.

I also loved how strong the h was but without being too stubborn. Along with that the H had a great mixture of hardness in general but sweetness for h.

I love an intelligent warrior who is hard outside and soft inside! The MMC is brutal and fierce to enemies, but funny, personable, protective, gentle, and caring with friends/family.

The FMC is a warrior two-fold. She’s a fierce fighter to enemies and family alike. The FMC meets the MMC on the battlefield and is his perfect match. She wields wits, skill, and strength equally.

Although suspicious of each other, the MMC wins the FMC over with the consistent kindness and care that he shows to others under his charge. They build trust and work together to defeat a common enemy. Their union is super sweet as it’s the first time the FMC experiences genuine love, affection, and friendships in her life.

I’m also interested in the side characters, so I’ll continue the series.

This is my first read from Maeve Greyson and I enjoyed it! I'm a big fan of historical romance and really like more medieval periods as opposed to Victorian. The heroine is feisty, strong, and can fight with the burly guys. The hero is surprisingly gentle for a tough mercenary. They work well together and have sparks. I only wish it was longer to give more space for character and relationship development. It's a short read- only about 140 pages. But I just saw that her other books are available on KU, so I'm going to check those out!

I received an ARC through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Thorburn was battling a fierce yet small warrior. This warrior was very fast and great at fighting yet so small for a man. When he pulls off their helmet he discovers it is a woman. Adellis has suffered so much due to her mad twin brother. She has escaped him again and is determined this time to never go back to him. She did count on being taken captive by such a handsome and strong warrior. She starts to develop feelings for him and she feels like this could be a great start to something great. Will she be able to escape her brother’s wrath and kill him for good? Will Thorburn be able to marry Adellis? was given an ARC through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review?
