The story's main events take place in California - beaches, Hollywood, sex. It does a fine job with those, but I have to wonder if the author ran up against a word/page limit set by the publisher, as the ending is so ridiculously abrupt (and wholly unsatisfying) at page 150. It's a shame because the first 3/4 of the book looked to be setting things up nicely for more excitement and narrative arc.
