I couldn't fully get into this book as much as I would have liked to. I think due to coming in on book 3 of the series, left me without critical information to fully under the main character. The switching between characters and locations did get a bit confusing as well. I did like the plot of the book though, but I think it got lost in the confusion for me.

This book was given to me from NetGalley and the publishers to read/review plus give my personal opinions on this book. All statements above are my own and based solely on my own opinions after reading the book.

Read my complete post on Rosepoint Pubishing.

Andi Silvers has settled in Coffin Cove and is working on the local paper as a reporter. Then some remains are found at a demolished cottage in the picturesque little settlement in Northern Canada, obviously forty or fifty years old.

Digging for info on the remains, old secrets begin to rise to the surface, and certain more powerful people would prefer the secrets stay just that—secret.

Given that this is my first in the series and this is Book 3, I seem to be missing a little backstory. I was busy sorting out main characters with the support characters when more were added, including PC Beth Stanton. (New to the story and new to the team?) Inspector Vega is supposed to be taking a break, but that isn’t working out well for him. The switch to the Yukon characters was a bit disorienting.

I’m not sure why I struggled with this novel. Perhaps an inability to engage with the protagonist, the confusion of multiple characters, or switch of locations. The investigation continued but didn’t seem to make much headway and as the plot swung into the conclusion became more brutal to the point of gratuitous violence and disbelief. I couldn’t buy survival of that last horrific scene.

I received a complimentary review copy of this book from the author and publisher through @NetGalley that in no way influenced this review. These are my honest thoughts.

This was my first book by Jackie Elliott and I wanted to like it more than I did. The book centers around Andi, a reporter at the Gazette who has relocated to the tiny fishing village of Coffin Cove. A body is found and so begins the mystery. The book is very confusing as there are too many characters introduced at different locations with different murders at each spot. As you're reading the first half or more of the book it's confusing how and why they are related. You eventually find out the connection but it takes way too long to get there IMO. I really enjoyed the characters in Coffin Cove, Andi, Hezbollah, Harry, etc and would've enjoyed the book much more if everything was centered more there. Having said that, this was the third book of a series, but my first book of the series. That could possible make a difference in your enjoyment of the book. The jumping around to the different locations with different crime scenes and different characters took away from my enjoyment of this book. There was way too much going on and it got confusing at times.

I would like to thank Net Galley and Joffe Books for allowing me an advanced copy of Hope Island.

A very good third book in series!

Andi Silvers is settling in to Coffin Cove; with somewhere to live, a relationship and feeling more at home in her job things are looking good. As a journalist, she finds herself not so much reporting the stories as getting involved in the investigation – she just doesn’t seem to be able to help herself! This time round there are not one, but two dead bodies to look into; one is a current murder when the owner of a nearby gas station is shot dead and the other comes under scrutiny when a dead body is found in a dilapidated cottage on nearby Hope Island – a largely deserted place except for self appointed ‘caretaker’ Joshua Moore. Can Andi work out what’s going on?

There is a lot going on in this book and the threads are twisted hard. I found I needed to concentrate to get it all straight in my mind and, although I didn’t get it all worked out, I did spot a guilty party fairly quickly. I really enjoyed the first in this series and was unaware that I had missed the second; unfortunately there is enough of it recounted in this third one to mean I can’t go back and read it now. That doesn’t take away from the entertaining tale here, well told and all wrapped up nicely by the final page. A great crime series and one to follow, preferably in order. Very enjoyable, 4.5*.

Exciting and Suspenseful

A discovery in the basement of a lighthouse shed brings the cold case to new interest for the past and current murders are occurred. The characters are both highly societies and natives. The characters are very realistic and the problem of past racism is past and the present is revealed. The environment of islands in the arctic provides a interest for the investigation. The story grew in my interest as more actions occurred. The book is completely, and the story is outstanding on its own. The story is entertaining and engrossing. It looks for reading are worth for more Coffin Cove Mysteries.

Fast paced and intriguing, I read this right after Books one and two of the series. But there were so many new characters introduced at the beginning in multiple locations it was hard to follow. I found myself having to go back to earlier chapters in the book to make it all make sense. I still gave it four stars because it is a good story and well written. If you stumble upon this review and haven't read the first book I recommend reading the first book 1st.

The tagline of this third book in the series of Coffin Cove thrillers is 'an absolutely unputdownable thriller' by Jackie Elliott 'best selling author'. This was more imaginative than the repeated tagline of the previous books in the series 'A gripping murder mystery full of twists'. I was glad that I had read the first in the series before tackling this one, with thanks to Joffe Books for a pre-publication proof. As a stand-alone novel this would be hard to read without prior knowledge of the principal characters and the setting. 'Andi' Silvers, an investigative journalist found herself in the remote West coast of Canada after being sacked from a high powered job in the city. She gets to know a brother and sister Harry a deep sea fisherman who lives on a boat and Hephzibah who runs the local coffee shop and also in book 3 gives Andi a home in her cottage.

I found the setting of the area less well described in book 3 and although past events were mentioned regularly there are so many threads in this book, hopping between chapters, that a new reader would have difficulty following the story because so much of it relates to the past. The novel starts with an incident in 1975 and several threads then link up to this as we discover as the book progresses. Some of these are barely touched upon (for example care of the elderly with dementia) and one wonders what the main focus might be.
Early on a body is discovered buried in a derelict cabin on the remote Hope Island where a new facility is proposed to honour the history and heritage of the Three Cedars First Nation people. The novel touches on racism, sexism, feminism, sibling/parent/political/business relationships. Two strands begin in the area of Coffin Cove and in the Yukon where a previous protagonist Inspector Vega says with 'dread' 'how could he have found himself in the middle of an investigation connected with Coffin Cove again'. The reader is tempted to agree.

If you add to the mix two characters with wicked deeds in the past who affect all that happens in the novel without us realising why until near the end, you understand why a new reader might find the story baffling.

The writing is good, without flaws. The characters are reasonably well defined. I honestly think it might have been better if the author had tried to knit fewer threads together. It was an enjoyable read, but I preferred the first book in the series.

‘Hope Island’ is the third instalment of the ‘Coffin Cove’ mystery series. I read, loved and reviewed the first two books in the series and so when I heard that Jackie was due to release another book in the series I knew that I had to read it at the earliest opportunity. Well ladies and gents the wait is over because ‘Hope Island’ was released on 7th April 2022. It’s another corker of a read and then some. I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘Hope Island’ but more about that in a bit.
As with Jackie’s other books I was drawn to this book by the eye catching cover and synopsis alone and the story within the book’s covers sealed the deal as it were. As soon as I started to read the book itself, I knew that I was going to enjoy reading ‘Hope Island’ and that reading it would prove to be rather addictive. I liked the character of Andi Silvers and in fact she began to feel more like a friend than a character in a book. I had to keep reading to see if she managed to survive to the end of the story and whether or not she managed to solve the mystery. I became so wrapped up in the story that I lost all track of time and just how quickly I was getting through the book. All too quickly I reached the end of ‘Hope Island’ and I had to say goodbye to Andi and to Coffin Cove. I found ‘Hope Island’ to be a gripping and dramatic read, which kept me guessing and which kept me on the edge of my seat.
‘Hope Island’ is extremely well written but then I have come to expect nothing less from Jackie Elliott. She certainly knows how to grab the reader’s attention and draw them into what proves to be one hell of a compelling read. Jackie has one of those easy going writing styles that is easy to get used to and easy to get along with. For me the story hit the ground running and maintained a fairly swift pace throughout. I love the very vivid and realistic way in which Jackie has written this story. She describes the characters, the places and the mystery so vividly that I felt as though I was part of the story and at the heart of the action. ‘Hope Island’ was an unpredictable and at times scary story with several twists and turns along the way.
In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘Hope Island’ and I would recommend it to other readers. I will certainly be reading more of Jackie’s work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.

Reporter Andi Silvers has been living in Coffin Cove on Vancouver Island for three years now, working under Jim Peters at the Coffin Cove Gazette. Recently the town saw four murders, something which Andi was involved in solving, and this has hit the fortunes of the town hard. Despite resentment from some of the locals, Mayor Jade Thompson has been trying to boost the flagging economy, first with the redevelopment of the old fish plant into apartments, a museum and boutique stores, and now making a deal with Chief George of the Three Cedars First Nation to turn Hope Island, once home to the women’s commune where Hephzibah grew up with her mother, into a cultural and historic venue. Unfortunately work has stopped due to the demolition crew finding old bones under the caretaker’s cottage at the site of the derelict lighthouse. They could be part of an ancient burial ground or something more recent and sinister, and have been handed over to the coroner. Before Andi can visit the island, Jim sends her off to report on the shooting of a petrol station cashier on the West Coast, and up in the Yukon mining gold, Virgil Bell, sister of Coffin Cove’s Clara Bell that readers of the series will be familiar with already, makes plans to right a wrong from his past. Also in the Yukon on holiday after his suspension is Inspector Andrew Vega who finds himself caught up in a case of murder and attempted murder and offers his help. Another killing in Coffin Cove sees Andi hot on the trail but how many more buried secrets can this unfortunate town cope with as all these cases start to converge? Oh, and just who is the new reporter in town?
As in the first two stories, there are lots of characters involved and I would suggest reading these books in order to get to know everyone and the history involved during Andi’s time in Coffin Cove. It was certainly nice to see many of the regulars back again. The author sets a great pace throughout the story as lots of history is revealed in this insular and often bigoted little town and many great suspicious characters, all with their own stories to tell, gradually get brought together to lead to a shocking and explosive ending. This really has become a super series and I can’t wait to read more! 5*

Journalist and sleuth Andi Silvers has got plenty to get her teeth into in Hope Island, the third installment of Jackie Elliott’s crime series set on the Vancouver coast.

Coffin Cove has, at long last, started to feel like home for Andi Silvers. Her job at the local paper is going well, she’s in a relationship and is living with her boyfriend Harry’s sister, Hephzibah. Having recently found herself plunged into two criminal investigations, Andi is looking forward to some peace and quiet. But she should know by now that life in Coffin Cove can be full of surprises and you never know just what – or who – is around the corner…

The discovery of human remains on remote Hope Island sends shockwaves reverberating all around Coffin Cove and with good reason as this discovery puts a spoke in the wheels of a new development – not to mention the fact that the only person living on the island is Joshua Moore who has lived in isolation for years. What is his connection to the remains that have been discovered? Can he help shed light on this mystery? One thing is for certain – there is certainly more to Hope Island and Joshua than meets the eye.

Meanwhile, a gas station owner is shot dead in cold blood on the west coast. Andi goes to cover the story and gets the shock of her life when she discovers that her estranged father is back and he left his business card with the victim of the shooting. What is her father up to? What does he want? And could he possibly be linked to the shooting?

Try as she meet, Andi cannot resist doing some sleuthing of her own. Can she solve these mysteries? Or has she come up against two cases that will leave her completely baffled?

Jackie Elliott’s Hope Island is another gripping mystery that will leave readers guessing until the very last page. Hope Island is an entertaining thriller about small town life, simmering tensions, dangerous secrets and old ghosts that kept me on tenterhooks eager to find out just what was going to happen next.

Tenacious Andi and the cast of characters that people this riveting tale of danger and suspense come instantly to life and will delight readers with their eccentricities, quirks and foibles.

Perfect for Louise Penny fans, Hope Island is a terrific Canadian whodunnit from Jackie Elliott.

This is the third novel I have read in this series taking place on Vancouver Island. This mystery is a little more involved in that we are also taken to the Yukon and murders there. Those murders do relate to what happened in Coffin Cove years ago and is happening today. The connection is slow in coming, as is the identity of the long dead person recently uncovered. We do get a very real sense of how hard it is to investigate a murder and identify the culprit. I like how Andi, Harry, and others in Coffin Cove pursue answers in a somewhat unorganized but effective way.

The plot is a good exploration of past actions, things done in the passion of youth, and how those actions have consequences into the present day. Those consequences can be deadly when the historical deed was done by someone of current power and influence.

I was pleasantly surprised at the introduction of Andi's father into the narrative. I look forward to seeing how he and Andi relate in future novels. I do like this series and will be looking for the next one.

I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

Andi Silvers is a reporter in Coffin Cove, a quiet town in Northern Canada. Some old remains have been found when a cottage is demolished, thought to be forty or fifty years old. The town has only just got over having four murders on their doorstep. When an old secret begins to come to light, several people have things they would rather others not know about and set about hiding them. Inspector Vega is taking a break after things not turning out at work quite as he planned. When he is on the doorstep of Coffin Cove and things take a turn for the worse he steps in to help.
I really enjoyed this and found myself racing through the pages. That I hadn't read book two didnt for me make any difference to my enjoyment of this- it all made perfect sense ( I just didnt know the scenario about the four murders). There is a good premise well executed and characters that you easily take to. Plenty to keep the grey matter active- just how I like it- without anything too complex. A highly enjoyable read.

This is book 3 in the Coffin Cove Mysteries series but they do work perfectly as stand alone.

Andi Silvers found herself in Coffin Cove when her life and career ended up in tatters. It was her only choice but although initially it was a chance to regroup now she has found herself regarding it as home. It isn't usually a dangerous job working for a newspaper but Andi seems to attract danger. The last book saw her home becoming a crime scene so she is now living with Hephzibah and building a relationship with Harry. Life is good finally she is happily settled but then her estranged father turns up, the remains of a body are found and suddenly life is once again a race against time to track down a killer before anyone else dies.

I love how the characters grow with each book and we learn more about them. I like the addition of Andi's father and the secrets that are tantalisingly hidden until the end of the book. The story is unique and complex with intrigue building all the way through.

A very gripping read and I am looking forward to more in this series.

Thanks to Joffe Books for an ARC of this novel. When I got the book, I hadn’t realised it was the third in a series. After reading a couple of chapters I decided I’d be better reading the previous books first. I’m glad I did as it was much easier to follow the story and characters.
It was principally set in Coffin Cove but the story was interlinked with other occurrences in different areas but it soon became clear how they linked.
Andi, the reporter, is still central to the story but other characters are also explored more, which is where the previous books help, as you know the back stories.
Initially Andi and Harry go off to cover a story outside of Coffin Cove at the same time some bones are discovered on Hope Island, where Hepzibah (Harry’s sister) grew up.
As the story progresses, Inspector Vega reappears, along with new characters and all the stories intertwine and the prologue starts to make sense.
I thoroughly enjoyed it, more because I read the previous books first. It can be read as a stand alone but I would recommend reading them in order to get the full story.

I voluntarily reviewed this book. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
When I requested this book, I did not know that it was book three in the series. I need to go back and read the other books only because I felt as though I needed to know some things like the backstory of Andi, Harry, and Vega. When a body comes uncovered at first, it is thought to be from the past, yet as the case starts getting looked into, it seems that it is more than that. While that is being looked into, a husband and wife are shot, and it seems like the cases will be linked, but how? It shows that things in a small town will not go uncovered; it just takes time. As Andi and Inspector Vega start getting closer and closer to the truth, they will find themselves in the crossfire of the one who wants to keep what was done a secret. There was a bit of confusion going on as we would jump around, but nothing too bad. I did love the setting of the town Coffin Cove, and I love the name. I would totally live in a place called that.

This is the third in the series but my first but it works well as a standalone. You are given snippets of a backstory which was enough for me.

The discovery of remains of a murdered woman sets off a chain of events and brings back buried memories and secrets to a number of people around Coffin Cove and the surrounding areas. This had a cozy type feel to it but while not a gritty tale, it definitely isn't your usual cosy book with baking and animals involved. Instead we are treated to some investigative journalism and a proper police type procedural and I must say, I found it a light and quite enjoyable read.

I will read more by thia author. My thanks to Joffe Books for providing me the opportunity to read this in advance and this is my honest review.

Although this book reads well as a standalone, like many in a series, it does benefit from reading the previous two as it gives it more clarity. Jackie's description of living so far west in Vancouver province is very good and as the reader, you are there with the vastness and the desolateness of Coffin Cove. There are also many references to the indigenous people from there, mainly how they had been treated and to a certain extent how some people still treat them which does give the story an edge. I did have a slight inkling as to part of the ending and look forward to the next book.

Thanks to Joffe Books for the ARC to review.

This book made a nice change, being set in Vancouver, and Vancouver island, both places which I have visited, so I was able to relate a little bit to the area.

It’s a fast moving storyline, old murders and scores to settle and Andi who’s living with Hephzibah, Harry’s sister, whom she is quite keen on.

There are a lot of characters and because I hadn’t read the first book I found I got a bit muddled, with who was related to who, but eventually I managed to get it straight!

It was on the whole a very enjoyable book with a good climactic ending.

My thanks to the author and Joffe publishers for the ARC.

Timely novel, important history

This morning I watched the news as I also read this book through the commercials. My interest was caught by CBS News report on American Indian "boarding schools". The horror of these schools, and the ones like them in Canada, is the basis for this third Coffin Cove novel. Jackie Elliott highlights the unimaginable treatment of children and even babies for over a hundred years in North America. The book is tight, well paced, and highly enjoyable. I recommend it, but do read the two prior books as well! And check out the article at CBS News, May 12, 2022 for more information.

HOPE ISLAND opens in the aftermath of a brutal act. In a future time, an unexpected, shocking find sends concern through a small coastal community. These and additional appalling incidents are like a wild rollercoaster ride of mysteries with every turn of a page. Riveting chapters fly by as the baffling conundrums leave you guessing. Suspense heightens once the mysteries begin to unwind leading to a race against time and a harrowing explosive finish

Coffin Cove is a dangerous place to live (or die!) and now Jackie Elliott expands her landscape to the freezing Yukon. It is a fitting backdrop to a dark and sometimes chilling plot. I love the way the author manages to bring together such a large cast of characters from the two previous novels in the series. The story is full of complex twists and turns, building tension skilfully for an explosive denouement.
A first rate crime thriller paced with pitch-perfect precision.

A murder mystery set in Coffin Cove, Canada. It was interesting to read about places I am not familiar with and the histories of Coffin Cove and Hope Island. Issues such as colonialism, rascism, abuse of girls/women and modernisation are all included and added to the intrigue.
In all I thought it interesting and entertaining.

Overall a well written, police procedural style mystery. Although this is part of a series, it read quite nicely as a stand alone. The characters were likable, although it was a tad difficult to keep up with them at times. I’d definitely check out the previous books in this series & more by this author.

During works on Hope Island, close to Coffin Cove, bones are discovered under the floor of a cottage. That of a young female. But Andi Silvers, reporter, is sent to another crime scene, one over on the west coast of Vancouver Island to report on a murder.
Meanwhile Inspector Vega is on holiday in the Yukon and gets involved in a murder enquiry.
But this is not the end of the killings. Is there a connetion betweens these deaths, and if so what.
An entertaining, well-written and well-plotted murder mystery with an array of likeable characters.
An ARC was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
