It's interesting how a person who studies mental health can write a book that completely ignores people with mental health issues or neurodivergent brains.
In fact, this book only seems to address middle class people with rather stable lives and a few privileges, who are also in a committed relationship with our system. (I say this, because motivation is mostly focused on getting things done, without really asking how to deal with the feeling of things not being worthy of being done. Like ....in our capitalist society the majority of jobs is only necessary because of capitalism. They have no higher purpose then to feed the person doing the job. So, people who want to gain something by reading this should be okay with possibly leading a life that has no other use than to keep capitalism alive.)
Don't get me wrong, most tips are good for SOME people. And they are scientifically proven. But keep in mind that science, until lately and in some cases still, focused on the middle class, white, dya cis allo-hetero, neurotypical and abled male.
So ... whoever might not check all those boxes might find, that their life's reality is only partially taken into account - or not at all.
And then there's also the issue of personal taste. Like ... I assume it's not due to my disabilities or my mental health that I UTTERLY dislike constantly happy people. Okay, then drain a lot of energy, that might be partially linked to my neurodivergence. But in the end this is probably just my personal taste. But even that is an issue here because the book seems to value these nuisances of humans, while it doesn't like pessimism. (It even links pessimism to anxiety, which is a bit odd, because personally I feel if I know what CAN go wrong, I'm more relaxed when approaching something. But again, I'm not part of the group that science likes to focus on.)
So ...yeah, the book is probably immensely helpful for some.
Just not for all, because humans come in all varieties and personally I was not addressed here at all.
What great little book. This was a short read - only a 100 or so pages but it packed in lots of information and practical strategies. Moods were categorised into 10 types and the author provided quick, short remedies for each, a discussion of the science behind each, and five strategies for dealing with each. The writing was easily understood but not overly simplified. The strategies made sense and do not appear to be onerous to undertake.
After watching a few of Olivia Remes' Ted Talks, I was really excited to read her book, hoping it would offer academic insights into ways to improve low mood. Instead of this, the book is a surface-level synthesis of simple common sense, presented as something more. I get that this book is supposed to provide instant solutions, but in most instances I found the fixes irritating, with not enough meat to contextualise why said intervention works.
I liked bits of the book - about blame in relationships and focusing on goals as opposed to moods. But ultimately thus was undone by an unnecessary chapter on spirituality and God.
I really do feel utterly disappointed, and know the author has something better to offer than this.

This book is fantastic, something that we've needed for so long. It's science-based and contains so many coping strategies for all areas of life. My sister has been suffering from anxiety for a long time and she can't wait to read this book - she's watched Olivia's TED talks on anxiety and they changed her life. My sister started practicing the strategies Olivia talked about in the TED talks and it's really turned her life around. I think this book will be a goldmine of amazing strategies and I can't wait to read it!
I just got this book, read it in a few hours and I have to say, it's the best book I've read in the last 10 years. It's such an amazing book. It has everything you could want - it teaches you simple steps you can take to change your life, your mindset, everything. It helped me overcome stress and just become a more motivated person that isn't afraid to take risks. It's changed the way I see and approach life. I couldn't recommend it more.
I really like accessible science and this is absolutely accessible, and the advice is good on a broad, superficial level, but the overall this book didn’t meet my expectations.
I think the problem is that it LOOKS like a book for people with clinical anxiety, but it’s written in a way that doesn’t demonstrate an understanding of what mental illness can actually feel like, eg. what it’s like to be totally knocked down by anxiety or depression. The subtitle mentions “emergency remedies to beat anxiety, panic or stress” but the example emergencies are things like thinking that reading journal is articles boring or wanting to eat less junk food. Yes there is mention of cancer and death but the associated feelings aren’t engaged with.
It also has a bit of a right-wing vibe in the sense of assuming that the solution for mental illness is for everyone to try harder, rather than acknowledging neurological and socioeconomic factors.
Worth flicking through or reading if you want some general good advice for life, but not for actual mental health emergencies.
Didn't find anything new in this book, so was a little bit disappointed. I guess if you're interested in psychology this will not be useful. A lot of the things briefly mentioned here do work, so if someone is looking for quick tips on how to elevate mood, it's a quick, evidence-based read, that can be helpful.
non-fiction/self help books are different for every person. This one for me was perfect. It fell at good timing for me. It was simple and quick. I felt the little tips did get me started in a better direction after a hard year. I felt uplifted and would recommend to those who need something postive to help them pick up a little.
Nice easy reading. I read the book cover to cover instead of picking specific sections at a time to focus on. However, I found that some chapters clung to my mind more than others and these were the ones I related to personally, the ones I will use going forward and refer back to.
A good intro to mental wellbeing for someone who hasn't looked much into it. It would be a good book for young teens, aside from the chapter on finding God.
I just wish that chapter had been more focused on finding something meaningful to believe in, rather than only based in Christianity.
Not big in addition to what we know and what is available but the book calls for a read for its structure and concise collection of remedies for 10 situations everyone deals with life.
