A steamy, full-length, standalone holiday romance with a guaranteed HEA from Amazon Bestselling author J.H. Croix! If you like smoking hot romance with alpha men and strong women, you’ll love this series!
Sometimes it takes more courage to love than to be alone.
When Janie Stevens gets fished out of the icy ocean after a boating accident, she doesn’t expect to fall for the man who saves her. Travis Wilkes, the man in question, is all kinds of man—firefighter, emergency responder and pure, rugged masculinity. She’s completely unprepared for the burning, yearning craving he kindles.
Travis is the quintessential sexy outdoorsman and much too busy for love. He’s been honed by a life on the edge in Alaska and not much rattles him. When he yanks Janie out of the freezing waters of picturesque Kachemak Bay, he takes one look into her eyes and can’t stop thinking about her. A man who doesn’t blink in the face of danger finds himself nearly brought to his knees by a woman.
Janie has her reasons for being committed to a life that doesn’t include romance. To say she has trust issues is a bit of an understatement. With the sparks flying between Janie and Travis burning too hot for them to ignore, they discover there may be much more than passion binding them together. Steamy nights, snowy days and Christmas just might convince Travis and Janie that love is possible.
*All novels in this series are full-length standalone novels with an HEA.

I thought it'll be one of the sweet and swoony Christmas romances, but after reading it, I don't know why the author has given this book this title. It's very little about Christmas in the story. This is a contemporary romances that shows the life of Alaska's citizens and their daily routines. It's a nice and sweet love story, but it's a very slow one. A love story with some emotional background and a lot of descriptions about the Alaska's wonderful people and nature. To be honest, for me was it just boring. I couldn't connect with the characters and therefore the love story felt rather plain and not emotional at all. Or maybe it was just not the right book for me 🤷🏻♀️
Sympathetic characters, a nice plot and some humour make this quite an enjoyable read, at least most of the time. The narration of the developing feelings between the two main protagonists and how they deal with it, however, have a tendency towards the boring sometimes, especially Janie's repetitive yay-nay attitude. On the whole, however, although this was nothing I was glued to, the book and the story were still interesting and captivating enough to keep me reading, and I even would not mind to read more in this series.
it was a sweet read. the page seemed a bit slow to me. I found my eyes scanning through sections when it slowed, like my brain was getting a little bored. but I was happy to get to their happily ever after.
Well then. This was quite a surprise! Surprising in how much I enjoyed - and devoured - this book! It was a fun, light read after the heavier previous books I'd just finished. I got this one during Christmas, though I didn't get to it during the holidays. To be honest, I was hesitant. I liked the difference of the setting and the story line and that I could read the book out of order (which I normally hate) and not feel like I missed anything in the story line. I definitely didn't, this can be read all on it's own with it's own HEA as the author notes in the description. Though of course now I have to go back and read about the Winter brothers!
I liked Janie and Travis' characters and enjoyed reading both of their POVs. Janie had some heavy stuff from her past, but despite her hesitancy in dating, it didn't really detract from her attraction to Travis. I think my only real quibble was that the 'conflict' wasn't really a conflicting conflict. Sure Janie struggled and she blew Travis off when she got scared. And her ex-step-dad reappeared in the story, but it wasn't overly dramatic or gripping in that edge-of-the-seat kind of way. After I finished the book, happily satisfied of course, I sat back and went 'well that was kind of anti-climatic...' Sure there's the fire drama that got Janie out of her head and admitting her feelings to Travis, but the potential conflict with Randy could have been better utilized.
What I liked most was Stella's character, Janie's adopted daughter. How refreshing for a character to adopt a foster kid and to love her and have a good relationship with her as Janie did with Stella! And to have Stella be such a solid character in the story. That was well-done I thought.
"You can’t change the past, but you can take a hard look at how it’s affecting your present and try to make sure you don’t let it run your life.”
Perhaps I do need to go back and read the rest of the series to fully get the story.... I did enjoy it though and that should be evidenced by how fast I finished it!
Romance trope: contemporary Series: Diamond Creek, Alaska Length: 234 pages
Plot: After a boating accident, firefighter Travis rescues Janie from the cold water. He comes to visit her in the hospital, just to make sure she's okay. He can't really explain why he is so drawn to the single mom, but he asks her out and they begin a relationship. Janie knows that Travis is a good guy, but because of past trauma, it's hard for her to trust. He just needs to make her understand that he isn't going anywhere and he will never hurt her or leave her.
Commentary: First, I love the book covers in this series - I find the watercolor look so pretty! Secondly, even though I know this is the last book, I would definitely read more in the series. The one thing that bugged me (and I know it did others as well because I saw this part underlined in my kindle) was that we know Janie adopted Stella when Stella was 16 per book 3). In this book, it says that she adopted Stella 3 years ago, but Stella is now 17. That doesn't add up. For some reason, I had in mind (from previous descriptions) that Janie was an older woman - much older than in her 30s. I imagined a dowdy, earth mother in her 50s, and that's not what she was at all. I don't know if I simply read wrong or didn't give it too much thought in Emma's book when we first met her. Also, I felt like the trauma that Janie suffered, not to downplay it, was a little overblown. She was hit by her mom's boyfriend (and had to see her mom abused, which is probably the more damaging of the two) and a decade later lets that still dictate her dating life? It's not that I don't see that as trauma, but if she forces Stella to go to therapy, maybe she could get some help as well? It feels like that one part of her life just paused. She was able to adopt a child (as a single mom), get a degree, become a teacher - but not date. I know part of it must be because she saw what dating did to her mom, but does she also see that her mom is actually doing better than she is? I don't know - I felt like it was blown up a little in order to introduce a conflict into the story. Still, I liked this story; it was nice to see Janie in a relationship and to revisit the characters from the previous stories in the series.
The setting kept me interested, I loved reading about Alaska in the winter, shivering at some of the snowy, windy days. The characters were likable but I thought Janie's reluctance to enter into a relationship was a little overdone.
It was predictable. I didn't connect with the characters. The steamy parts were not believable. What happened with the end? What was the message? Not my cup of tea. wouldn't read any other book of the author.
Janie is a school teacher, Travis works for the Fire Department. These two have been coexisting under each other’s noses for the past few years but never really noticed each other until Janie is a boat that starts to sink in the bay and Travis is the one to save her.
Now suddenly, they seem to just keep bouncing into each other and they definitely notice each other. Travis has never had an interest in a relationship, keep it all casual because he will travel on fishing boats, be gone at a moment’s notice with an emergency call or simply he likes to be able to come and go as he pleases until now. Now it all seems to be for not, he’s more interested in experiencing life with Janie.
Janie on the other hand, has avoided relationships. It started with a childhood incident, then the adoption of a child that had been in her care. As a teacher and a single mother, Janie thinks her life is full, now Travis is filling her thoughts.
Can Janie learn to trust? Can Travis find a way through Janie’s defenses without sending her running?
This was a refreshing romance story. It wasn't just about sex. Janie and Travis are quite the pair. I absolutely loved the back and further between the pair. They had some serious chemistry and it was off the charts. Travis was used to the single life, dating here and there, never anything serious. Janie never worried about a relationship, she had her adopted daughter to raise, plus her issues from growing up.
Upon a chance encounter, Janie almost drowning and Travis saving her, the whirlwind begins. Both don't know how to handle their feelings, but leave it to a teenager to call them out on it.
I adored this couple. They way that J.H. paints a picture of the pair, plus the scenery of Alaska, swoon worthy.
I voluntarily received a copy for my honest review.
I love returning to Diamond Creek, Alaska! This book follows Janie and Travis, two characters that have appeared in several other books in the series. I was so excited to hear that they would get their own happy ending and it does not disappoint! I really enjoyed Stella and her interactions with and acceptance of Travis.
JH Croix always has such well rounded characters and the setting of Diamond Creek is a character in and of itself.
I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
Janie & Travis' story is awesome. You'll find sweetness, adventure, steamy nights and even some laughter with their story. I truly enjoyed reading this book. The characters seems so real that I would get so lost in the story, it was like I was there watching everything unfold. I could feel all the emotions they felt. Now, this is the kind of books I love to read and J.H. Croix knows exactly how to write them. She's one of my very favorite authors and once you read her books, I'm sure you're going to feel the same way!
I had read some of JH Croix's other books so was happy to pick this one up for free on Amazon. Once I started it I couldn't put it down, I loved it and I loved Travis. I definitely need to go back and read the other books in the series as this was book 6. The build between Travis and Janie felt real and whilst other reviews have said this book was too slow and boring, to me it was neither. I particularly loved the relationship between Stella and Janie and Travis. She was a great kid. A definite yes from me and I'm now going to read the rest of the series.
This was disappointing. I was looking forward to a holiday book, but it really had nothing to do with Christmas. Despite its name, the book basically ended with Thanksgiving, then skipped ahead to the following year. It was just OK for me. Travis, our hero, was great. He was quiet and sweet, a firefighter who is a solid and dependable guy. When he saves Janie from a ferry accident, he suddenly "sees" her and falls for her right away. Janie, on the other hand, is a single mother of an adopted daughter, and she is very gun shy about relationships after a bad history with her stepfather. Janie is less appealing because she spends so much time waffling about Travis. Everyone tells her he's great and trustworthy, but she just keeps being undecided--first leading him on and being overwhelmed with passion, then backing away for several days, then coming back for more. I couldn't understand why he kept sticking around. And I thought that Janie's daughter was about 11 or 12 years old because of the way Janie parented her, and I was shocked to discover she was a senior in high school! With Janie's fairly strict discipline of Stella, I was then further surprised that Janie had no problem with Travis sleeping over. There were some exciting moments based around Travis's firefighting job. And when things worked between them, Janie and Travis were definitely hot together. It was the off-and-on nature of their relationship that drove me crazy. All that being said, I am interested enough in the series to go back to the beginning and catch up with the characters. There were mentions of couples from previous books that caught my interest.
I think it was so cool for J.H. Croix to heed the request of her readers to write a story for Tristan. It's like a gift for her fans! I loved that this book not only made references to other books and characters in the Diamond Creek series, but this happened enough years after Sarah and Luke’s story (When Love Comes) that we had references to the Last Frontier Lodge series. Since I totally dig cross-referrences, I was giving silent thumbs-up to the author throughout the book! As for Tristan and Janie, it was sweet and tender, yet still oozing with hot chemistry. We’d met Tristan a few times before as he was friends with the Winters, especially Nathan. We met Janie in Love Unbroken as Emma was providing therapy for Janie’s then foster child Stella. Janie happens to also be a beloved school teachers at the school where Ginger works from the Frontier Lodge series (Falling Fast). This book allowed us to get to know each so much better, and to see how perfect they were for each other. I’m still swooning!
I enjoyed reading this book I found it quite a cute book, there where some places where it got a little sexual but I did enjoy how the story come together, the story is about how 2 people come together, but how lust and desire turns into love. you have one woman who has been so hurt and crushed by what's happened to her mother in the past in an abusive relationship that she puts up a wall to protect herself by being independent and socially awkward around men, then you have the guy who is use to play on the field flirting & banter with all girls, who volunteers with the fire department and works and helps out with other things across the island. when they first meet its attraction at first site which is a trate I am sick of in books really; as they get to know each other things start to progress deeper and they are confused and in denial, until tragedy hits and their forced to admit how they feel. this is the 6th book In a series i did not read the others yet but this one can be read as a stand alone
I am debating if I liked this book or not. First there was no chemistry between Travis and Janie. Not to downplay Jamie's one time physical abuse, but come on. It's been 10+ years. Get over it. Look at her adopted daughter. She was abused for years and she is doing better than Janie. To quote Stella. "My first mom died of an overdose, and I’m the one who found her. I can deal with all kinds of things. I am going with you." Janie let a one time incident to herself be the mainstay in her life. Yet it was her Mother who was beaten regularly .
Travis had potential for being a more standout character. Only Janie's problems manipulated the whole relationship. Did some author say the 'H' word? Honesty? I can't believe it "His unflinching honesty made her feel a tiny bit less mortified....". Yep Janie's emotions come first.
Now it could just be me but Janie was so needy is a manipulative way. I liked the premise of the read just not the main character.
I received a free copy of Christmas Nights and voluntarily chose to review it. J.H. Croix is a pleasure to read. If you haven't read any of her books yet Bella Andre would be a close comparison. I pick up a book by J.H Croix I can't put it down.
When Janie Stevens (Teacher) is pulled from Kachemak Bay by Travis Wilkes (First Responder Fire Fighter) after almost drowning and hypothermic following a boat accident, attraction snaps between the two of them like electrical sparks. These two strong independent loners are well known and loved by friends in small town Diamond Creek where gossip travels fast everyone knows everything and everyone offers their relationship advice. While Travis is putting out fires and playing chase with a moose. Janie is dealing with her sweet mischievous students. Stella (Janie's adopted daughter) decides to offer her observation "Why aren't you spending the night" in typical no nonsense teenage fashion. It's not all grins an giggles Janie deals with trust issues having had an abusive Stepfather and the journey this takes them on. Having to overcome hurts emotional as well as physical leaving a dark past behind, moving toward a brighter future. Learning to trust their judgment building a strong loving relationship and family together. After the abuse in their past, Janie and Stella have Travis who makes them the center of his world. Truly enjoyed the way this relationship came together. The stories and characters feel as if your visiting friends the occurrences make you feel part of this small community... Can't wait for another visit to this small town or J.H.Croix new series.
Janie has lived in Diamond Creek, Alaska, all her life. She's never had much to do with men because after her father died. her mother took up with a seemingly nice guy who turned out to be an abusive jerk. He slowly undermined her mother's confidence until she was a shadow of herself. Her mother found the courage to leave him after her assaulted Janie and broke her jaw.
Travis moved to Diamond Creek five years ago. He's dated, but never gotten serious with anyone. After fishing Janie out of the bay after a boating accident, he can't stop thinking about her. He starts "checking in" with her and eventually asks her out for dinner. Janie's life is complicated - not only is she wary of all men, she's also the adopted mother of a 17-year-old, so feels she has no time for men.
I liked Travis, but was frustrated with Janie's emotional detachment that she blamed on her mother's ex-boyfriend. I wanted to tell her to grow up and get over it.
Janie's mom had an abusive boyfriend and made her leary of men in general. Then one day she decides to go for a boat ride with her daughter Stella and a huge wind comes put of no where and knocks the boat over. Janie ends up in the river fighting for her life and worrying about Stella. She looks up and sees these deep blue eyes of the person who saves her, Travis. Travis is a firefighter and sent out on a rescue of a capsized boat in a river. He gets there and finds some people in hysterics. He grabs a drowning Janie while trying to console her and let her know that Stella is just fine. He just can't get over how much he's attracted to her. He checks on her in the hospital and sees she's fine. Janie realizes when he walks in that he's one that saved her life. Now she must come to terms with these new emotions that have to come to life in her. Will they fight their attraction for each or give into it?
I really enjoyed the bond that Travis and Stella developed throughout this story. I also enjoyed parts of the Jane and Travis's love story. That being said, Jane wasn't my favorite heroine. It's as though she was looking for an out before anything even began. So why bother pursuing things?
The meet cute was decent, but I honestly think the situation that happened later in the book would have been more fitting. But that's just me. The tie in with Jane's past was an interesting addition, but I also don't know if it was needed. I mean it kind of explains why Jane is the way she is, but it also just seemed "filler-ish".
I don't understand why JH Croix chose Christmas Nights as the title for this book. At no point during the story did I think "oh that makes sense".
All in all the story was decent. Was it my favorite from the author? No. Will I still read other books by this author? Yes I will.
This was the first book that I read and I didn’t know it was the last one in a series. I got a hint from Bookbub and decided to give it a try. It can totally be read as a standalone though. The story is ok. There’s nothing much happening apart from a guy and a girl meeting and falling in love. I didn’t find any excitement or angst. I don’t even know why this book is called Christmas Nights! It’s all very ordinary. Even the romance is not very swooning and it’s all just a bit boring actually. We don’t know much about Travis and I don’t know if it’s because he was introduced in previous books or if the author decided to focus only in Janie’s background, which seems lazy to me. So, I wouldn’t recommend this book because there are better ones out there to devote your time to. Not that this one is bad, it’s just not good either.
Another great book in a great series by J. H. Croix.
I can understand why Janie feels the way she does about relationships after she watched her mom go from being a strong woman to someone who was subdued by an abusive man. Things get emotional when Randy, her mom's ex, comes back to town and is arrested for hurting another girlfriend and also assaulting a police officer. Travis just never found the right girl for him and when he fished Janie out of the bay and their eyes locked they both knew their life has changed. They just never imagined how the other would effect them. Will Janie be able to get out of her own way and get over her past to allow Travis into her life and admit that she loves him? What will she do when Travis admits to her that he loves her?
This was such an awesome holiday romance from JH Croix! Janie is dragged out of the icy ocean by Travis, while her daughter Stella watches frantically from another boat! Sparks fly instantly, and Stella is all for it, however Janie has a past, that has most definitely affected her future and any relationships. Travis has a very busy career as a firefighter and wasn’t looking for anything either. Stella steals the show in the story, she is feisty and damn fun keeping Travis on his toes regularly! Love sneaks up on these two, question is, can they get out of their own way and just let it happen? These two have a fiery chemistry! I am so sad to see this series end, but I absolutely recommend it!
