“Our weakness doesn’t make us weak. Our weakness makes us strong. For we had to carry it all these years.”
I missed the feeling of reading a cosmere book that wasn't a reread and this book fulfilled that enjoyment along with the nervousness, the fear, the enjoyment and the anticipation which is what I expect to come with a Stormlight novel and honestly I know that they all are 1000+ pages but I want them to be even more than that because not once do I feel like they are a slog to go through. Like did this read like a science textbook at times? Yes, but it was a very enjoyable textbook mind you. Like if they serves us with this textbook in school you bet your ass I would get A* on all my subjects. Petition to make Brandon my professor. That way I can study and have fun and urge him to give Kal the peace he needs and write a VinElend a novel which we deserve, The principal would have to call the security guards to get me off of questioning him....Okay I ventured off a bit out of topic (🤡) but can you really blame me?
This was the longest Cosmere book besides Wind and truth. The audiobook was 57 hours the Ebook was 2000 pages and my paperback editions combined were 1490 pages and I savored them all, every comma, every full stop, even the ellipsis. The book itself is just so fun to read like it takes off after the events of Oathbringer and it deals with them in such a fun way, It's broke my heart, it had it almost on the verge of a cardiac arrest and it also had me confused at times but I loved every minute of his writing!!! It was so simple and so vivid and it felt so good to read, the way he puts his special twist on characters and they shape up to be the best characters that you read and it's the way the story keeps on moving forward, unraveling things without repetition and the way it has the ability to keep me hooked throughout and the way every single thing is connected is so mindfuckingblowing that I can't stop with his books.
I love how he is that one author who has never ever disappointed me at all! I know that I will read his books and they will be five stars and worst case scenario a four star, It's very very very rare for a book of his to be below that, he just knows what to serve and I love that because he does what he intends to do and what initially planned ( keeping in mind everything about this series was planned during the 1990s-2000s) but still deliver on what the fans want and I feel like he in a way manipulates to want the things that he knows is what he's gonna write next (😭) and I just love that so much and honestly the sanderlanche (aka the last three hundred pages) are what I crave, like it's a drug and I am addicted because there is no other explanation for my not so unhealthy obsession with them, like keep me away from that for too long and I might get a seizure (🌚)
“It will,” Wit said, “but then it will get better. Then it will get worse again. Then better. This is life, and I will not lie by saying every day will be sunshine. But there will be sunshine again, and that is a very different thing to say. That is truth. I promise you, Kaladin: You will be warm again.”
The amazing cast of characters that never fail to capture my heart except for one bitch who will get a hateful essay:
Kaladin Stormblessed, the man that you are! I love, love. love, love him like you do not know the love that I hold for him!! he literally blows my mind with the things he does and like even the most subtle things he does has me screaming! yes I am his number one fan and I will fight anyone who takes me up on that (looking at you Hoda stay away) his arc was so well done, like I honestly was a teensy bit reluctant when I saw the direction it was going but it was so needed!! this healing arc
HEALED
me like I cannot fathom how people read that arc and still thought 'Nah this book is bad' like bffr it was amazing. I also love whoever is even a teensy bit rude to Kaladin, me and Hoda start hating them lol but you cant blame us for that because
Live, Laugh, Love Kaladin
is a ritual that I live by.
Now, coming to his character, I feel like Brandon is such a brilliant author for writing a character this complex that you can write 4 1000+ paged books with things still left for his character to explore and while exploring those things you are constantly putting him on a journey so he can move forward and evolve and develop and that is just so brilliant from his side. I feel like this journey was needed because the strained relationship between him and his father was steaming up since book 3 and the trauma that he went through for like the past 8 years was getting neglected so in this way It felt nice to see him reflect on his trauma and deal with it and oh my god there was this scene near the end with Tien and it had me on the verge of tears which is honestly expected when Tien pops up, but I loved his relationship with Teft and I loved how they believed in each other and have been inseparable like I loved them together and honestly Kaladin's relationship with his mother Hesina is so precious!! Also we got to see Kaladin out of uniform which was (🫦)
“Who do you think is stronger?” Adolin asked. “The man who has walked easily his entire life, or the man with no legs? The man who must pull himself by his arms?”
Adolin, My second favorite character because he's so precious the enjoyment he brings, the way he makes me laugh the way his scenes are almost the most climatic and powerful scenes at times!! like I am not even joking and it may seem blasphemous lol but his arc was the best in this book even better than Kaladin! like I absolutely loved his trial at shadesmar arc and like that just proves how good of a man he is and how much honor he has because he was willing to stand on trial for people WHO he had no relations with and didn't know or share crimes with just for the sake of saving humanity and like the penance for failing the trial was equivalent to eternal damnation so I think he deserves way more praise that he gets because like I cant imagine this whole series without Adolin like honestly I just cant there would be a massive chunk missing if you remove Adolin from the books, I loved him and I loved how patient he was with Shallan!! there romance was very cute.
“Heroism is a myth you tell idealistic young people—specifically when you want them to go bleed for you.”
Shallan, All that work revolving around Shallan in the previous books are really shaping up in this one!! I just loved her arc on this book, it was so well done like with all the personalities and like as much as it was tedious to read at times in Oathbringer I loved it that much because they were developing so much and the steam was following them and it finally snapped and oh my god the whole formless scene gave me so much anxiety like you guys have no idea I was biting on my nails ( AND I NEVER DO THAT) it was so stressful! the things that she did were so amazing like Brandon sanderson is absolutely killing it with her arc!! I can't wait to see more of what she does and how she progresses the story forward!! Also thanks to her we got a major Kelseir mention which could probably and most definitely lead to a cameo in the next book.
“You don't have to smile. You don't have to talk. But if you're going to be miserable, you might as well do it with friends.”
Navani, Ladies and gentleman the star of this book. The one and only Navani Kholin. Me throughout the book; "Who is this diva? (purple heart)" Her storyline ate and I honestly was not expecting it to be a Navani focused book because I have been following sanderson's blogs and he usually refers to a book with a character who have their past perspectives written in them, so main signs were of Eshonai and while she had them, it focused on Navani and honestly I loved. She's a lioness for keeping up with that rat that Gavilar is and omg she is so smart, I can see that Jasnah takes after her and not that rat and the way she handled the whole tower situation was so well done. She avoided so many casualties, discovered so many things, got successful with a special gift lmaoo. Also I am a strict Navani X Dalinar ship but did anyone else feel something between her and Raboniel lol.
“I know what you are,” Shallan whispered. “You’re the blankness upon my memories. The part of me that looks away. The part of my mind that protects me from my past.”
“Of course I am,” Veil said. “I’m your veil, Shallan.”
Dalinar, He surprisingly wasn't the main focus of the book?? which is shocking since we got an overwhelming amount of chapters in the previous books and it kind 0f felt refreshing to read the other povs in abundance rather his but his journey was interesting to read, I wanted to see what would happen with his journey and honestly for a bondsmith he can be pretty dumb or travangian is pretty smart (the latter) I liked the way Dalinar's story was headed and the ending??? NEXT BOOK PLS. Jasnah I love her so much and her with wit is everything also I wanted more of her scenes! The battle scene that she had absolutely ate like she is such a bad, she was literally clawing her way forward and uff my heart was in my throat the whole way during that scene where she stopped thinking and raged. I love her arc as queen.Szeth
“If we can choose, we can change. If we can't change, then choice means nothing. I'm glad I feel this way, to remind me that I haven't always felt the same. Been the same.”
Bridge four, They are everything!! Leyten had my heart, I missed Rock and Lopen a lot and I already had this connection with sig because of the sunlit man but Teft, his arc broke me, the words he spoke and AHHHHHHH BRANDON I HATE YOUUUU for writing him heal and ending it with that it honestly broke me like how dare you. The audacity??? Why did you do that!!! I loved him soooooo much. Wit, I love him so much the way he was tempering with the contract and the way he had the main goal of keeping Odium here and tricking him was awesome but the ending?? absolutely mind fucking honestly I was tripping! I also loved how he tipped Kaladin back and kept him away from Odium and I also loved the stories that he told!! + his spren design is so funny I love their bickering. ALSO Wit is 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓴𝔂 that whole safehand makeout was 🫦 Lift, I just included her because like first of all that Moash scene she dealt it with it in a very smart manner but her running after a chicken while her being besieged had me creasing.
“I accept that there will be those I cannot protect.”
Travangian, Guys he's so creepy and scary, he freaks me out but you guys won't believe me!! I predicted the BIGGEST plot twist like oh my god I cant believe me and hoda figured it out! it was amazing. Also Trav is gonna fuck so many things up I hate him. Moash, You know who I hate more than |Trav this motherfucking bitch right here, he deserves eternal damnation! like this bitch, I would personally shove my thumb in his eye sockets and slice him a hundred times while having an edgedancer beside me so I could heal him and make him go through that again and again and honestly I will never ever take his redemption arc I just know it will be an immediate one star!!! Also, he fumbled really hard with what he did here, there is no going back from here. He needs to die.
“I know how you feel. Dark, like there's never been light in the world. Like everything in you is a void, and you wish you could just feel something. Anything. Pain would at least tell you you're alive. Instead you feel nothing. And you wonder, how can a man breathe, but already be dead?”
The plot, the action and the worldbuilding/magic systems, the plot of this book was divided into three sections. One was following Dalinar, the other Navani and the last one Adolin and they all were heading towards wind and truth so I loved seeing them collide and be set into motion, the politics that were brought within it was so fun to read, the different cultural aspects and the deeper lore behind Urithiru and the Pareshendi that we got to read was soo fun!! the action sequences were breathtaking, the whole armor scene of Kal was also another of my favorites but the action scenes were so well done, they feel like a time bomb and it's been too long I think, he's definitely killing someone in the next book!! A main character is gonna die and I AM NOT READY. Please help! but yeah the worldbuilding just evolves and it grows and expands and takes its form to be the best out there and the magic system gets more complex and fun to decode so honestly, I love these aspects also the political intrigue was really fun to read!
Overall, this book was everything I hoped for a stormlight book to be!
Some quotes I loved:
“Our weakness doesn’t make us weak. Our weakness makes us strong. For we had to carry it all these years.”
.
“Why do we fight, Kal? Why do we keep going?” “I don’t know,” Kaladin whispered. “I’ve forgotten.” “It’s so we can be with each other.” “They all die, Tien. Everyone dies.” “So they do, don’t they?” “That means it doesn’t matter,” Kaladin said. “None of it matters.” “See, that’s the wrong way of looking at it.” Tien held him tighter. “Since we all go to the same place in the end, the moments we spent with each other are the only things that do matter. The times we helped each other.”
.
“I’m not strong enough,” Kaladin whispered. “You’re strong enough for me.” “I’m not good enough.” “You’re good enough for me.” “I wasn’t there.” Tien smiled. “You are here for me, Kal. You’re here for all of us.”
.
“Some people charged toward the goal, running for all they had. Others stumbled. But it wasn't the speed that mattered. It was the direction they were going.”
.
“Kaladin’s anxiety began to subside, and he pushed through the worst of the darkness. He always emerged on the other side. Why was that so difficult to remember while in the middle of it?”
.
“You just want to stop existing,” Kaladin said. “You don’t want to actually kill yourself, not on most days. But you figure it sure would be convenient if you weren’t around anymore.”
.
“No one ever accomplished anything by being content with who they were, Shallan,” Adolin said. “We accomplish great things by reaching toward who we could become.” “As long as it’s what you want to become. Not what someone else thinks you should become.”
.
“That’s because Wit is an asshole,”
.
“I am an artist,” Wit said. “I should thank you not to demean me by insisting my art must be trying to accomplish something. In fact, you shouldn’t enjoy art. You should simply admit that it exists, then move on. Anything else is patronizing.”
.
“We need both heart and mind," Lirin said. "The heart might provide the purpose, but the head provides the method, the path. Passion is nothing without a plan. Wanting something doesn't make it happen.”
.
“You're always willing to give others more charity than you extend yourself.”
.
“Fine,” Navani said. “I hope when you die—knowing your homeland is doomed, your families enslaved, your queen executed—you feel satisfied knowing that at least you maintained a slight market advantage.”
.
“History is like that, always gobbling up the present.”
.
“WATCH, the Rider said. YOU WANTED TO KNOW WHAT WAS BEYOND THE NEXT HILL. SEE THEM ALL.”
.
“That night, it rained on the other dogs, who slept outside in the cold barn, which leaked. But the little dog snuggled into a warm bed beside the fire, hugged by the farmer’s children, his belly full. And as he did, the dog sadly thought to himself, ‘I could not become a dragon. I am an utter and complete failure.’ The end.”
.
“No army, no matter how clean its reputation, walked away from war untainted. And no leader, no matter how noble, could help but sink into the crem when he stepped into the game of conquest.”
.
“Radiant,” he said. “How? How do you still fight?” “The same way you do,” Kaladin said. “One day at a time, always taking the next step.”
.
“Honor is not dead so long as he lives in the hearts of men!”
.
“Strength before weakness. He was coming to understand that part of his first oath. He had discovered weakness in himself, but that wasn't something to be ashamed of. Because of that weakness, he could help in ways nobody could.”
.
“Who is a better swimmer?” Veil whispered. “It’s the sailor who has swum his entire life, even if he encounters rough seas that challenge him. Who is the stronger man? It is the man who must pull himself by his arms.”
.
“Yet the misery did lessen around others, and it required Kaladin to keep up a semblance. To pretend. It might be a front, but he'd found that sometimes the front worked even on himself.”
.
“It was a nice dream, wasn't it, Syl?" he asked. "That we could escape? Find peace at long last?"
"Such a wonderful dream," she whispered.”
.
“You should have been the surgeon Adolin," Kaladin said. "Not me. You care about people." "Don't be silly," Adolin said, pulling open the door as he gestured at Kaladin's work clothing. "I could never dress like that." He left Kaladin with a wink.”
.
“Deal with your own stupid planet, you idiot. Don’t make me come over there and slap you around again.”
