This was so adorable. I loved the Chibi art style. Probably the best part was Zuko trying to get Appa into the tea shop in the background. Very funny and cute.

Such a cute story and even cuter artwork! My nephews are just getting into Avatar and I already know they’re going to love this book too.

Sehr spaßig und kurz für zwischendurch. Die Story war natürlich sehr vorausschaubar, aber das ist in Ordnung. Besonders gut haben mir die Illustrationen am Ende gefallen, die zeigen, wie der Comic entstanden ist.

It was such a cute read that I really enjoyed. I've been in the mood to just read everything that has to do with Avatar: The Last Airbender lately and I saw that this just come out so I decided to read it since it was a short read. I really have to say that it was so cute and something that I highly recommend to anyone that loves this universe. I didn't know what it was going to be about but by the title, it's pretty obvious and I think that's what made it so cute. The artwork itself is different from the show and it's more targeted for children but it was still very enjoyable and well done.

Oh, my goodness. Did you know there's a chibi version of Avatar: The Last Airbender? Because I certainly didn't! Where has this been all of my life?! Let's dive into Avatar: The Last Airbender Chibis Vol. 1: Aang's Unfreezing Day.

As you might have guessed, Aang's Unfreezing Day is as cute and charming as one might have hoped. It revolves around our favorite Airbender and a surprise his friends are desperately trying to keep from him. Easier said than done. We all know how nosy Aang can get.

Honestly, this break from the normal storytelling style was refreshing and fun. Yes, it fits into an odd place in the continuity, but that's okay! It lets us celebrate the characters and their relationships. No need to dig deeper.

I'm just going to say it: I would die for chibi Appa. That is all.

When nobody knows your birthday because you have been closed off in ice for 100 hundred years, what are friends to do when they throw you a party?

This felt distinctly middlegrade and is set after the animated series without really including spoilers. Our gang is living in Ba Sing Se, Iroh has his tea shop the Jasmine Dragon, and life is good. No adventures require immediate attention, so a bit of slice of life plot can go on.

Felt not drawn to this as with the usual graphic novels to the series. I guess I am just too old and have read far too many stories with this premise. Will be fun for younger readers though.

The arc was provided by the publisher.

I cannot emphasize enough how cute this is!

Not only that, but it handles its sweet-as-pie premise without being saccharine. Everyone feels very in-character, despite being written for a much younger age group than the OG show.

Little things like Sokka wallpapering Aang's room with suspicious notes, Toph's specific brand of snark, Zuko's social awkwardness (and the fact that he's more shy than the others about giving Aang a present, despite getting him something as cool as fireworks) all come together really beautifully to make the group feel like themselves.

The characters' chibi models are adorable while still retaining the essence of each character. As a kid, I would have really eaten up the section at the back of the comic explaining the process of developing the comic (and okay, I still ate it up. I am an artist, after all). I liked the notes on their character designs, like Appa's "bison hump," using a paler color scheme for Toph's eyes, and the emphasis on Zuko's scar (his chibi design emphasized that he couldn't open that eye very wide, and that he had no eyelashes on his scarred eye. For some reason, a comic for kindergarteners is better at depicting his scar than any live action adaptation so far). Even things like using the right pigment for the whites of Aang's and Iroh's eyes go a long way. With character design, detail really is everything, especially on "simple" character designs!

I love the Gene Luen Yang graphic novels, which are very much centered around complex political and philosophical situations, but many people want more slice-of-life stuff that showcases the daily lives of Team Avatar. If that's what you're hankering for, this is for you! And let's be real, who doesn't crave a little wholesome Team Avatar content once in a while?

What an adorable little comic. I picked this up on free comic book day and read it with my wife. It was a nice little time.

THE STORY: this story takes place shortly after the end of the original TV series 3 season run, roughly 1 year after aang was unfrozen from the iceberg.
katara, sokka, toph, and zuko are trying to throw a surprise party for aang, as this is the closest thing he has to a birthday.
But chaos ensues when aang catches his friends suspiciously preparing for the festivities. Aang gets angry as the misunderstandings pile up.

THE BAD: if you're expecting big reveals about the lore or major new developments for the characters you know and love... look elsewhere. But I don't think that was the point. This is supposed to be cute and fun.

THE GOOD: it's... so... CUTE!
If you read this, it's going to put a smile on your face. You get to see toph with her signature snark, katara very awkwardly trying to hide what she's doing without upsetting aang, sokkas inept and goofy attempt to deter aang from leaving the house, zuko getting angry, and even a lovely little chat with Iroh. It's everything you could want in an avatar comic.

THE CONCLUSION: final rating is 5 stars. It's not a complex or thematically deep story at all, but who cares? This comic was just trying to be fun and cute- nothing more. And it succeeds at doing so with flying colors. Seek this one out and give it a read.

Oh and also, Michael Atiyeh did the colors! That's awesome, he was one of the two main artists behind John Jackson Miller's Knights of the Old Republic comic, which is my favorite comic. So he delivered more of his excellent work here.

I've always liked Chibi-art (cartoony style with overly large heads, usually adorably cute) - and while we've seen it a few times in the Avatar comics, it's usually only in a simple short story or in one of the art panels. This time, we get a full (well, 50 pager) book with the style.

The story is simple: team Avatar is trying to set up a surprise party for Aang for his 'unfreezing day'. Usual antics follow as they try to keep it a secret and Aang wonders if anyone likes him anymore. The fun is in the dialogue - and to a larger extent in the cute art that carries the story. I loved it - especially the section where they try to coax Appa into a building for the surprise.

While the art style looks childish, and likely this is a good fit for the younger reader, this graphic novel is perfect for a mature reader as long as you like the comedic aspects of Avatar, and you don't find the art style off putting. Highly recommended. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

Call me a sucker for anything ATLA related, but this was just plain adorable. Simple story, but it's more for a younger age group than the usual graphic novels, and the chibi style and expressions are super cute. Took me leas than a half hour to get through, but still good! And theres a cute blurb at the end for kids on how to make comics so that was nice!

This was a very cute and quick read. It was lovely to see everyone give Aang an unofficial birthday, especially when you take into account that he most likely forgot when his birthday is due to being frozen for so long.
I wish this moment would’ve been in the original animated series since it would’ve been adorable to see.

Literally the best way to describe is "cute."

The storyline was endearing and the ending with Zuko's gift was just so adorable. It was nice to go back to Ba Sing Se with our favorite Team Avatar. Loved it.

For all the delays this received, the result was just kinda "eh". I don't mind the pacing, but I've read far more interesting ATLA comics with this sort of page count - it really doesn't amount to much on its own. What you see in the blurb is what you get in the book.

Super cute quick read! The gang celebrated the day Aang & Appa was unfrozen from the iceberg. In my opinion there is nothing to dislike, it met all expectations. I just wish Suki could have been apart of it too. Sometimes she’s forgotten, I think she’s part of the gang too.

It's for incredibly young readers.
But I have to give it to the writers because even with the more immature tone, compared to the cartoon, the dialogue is still so representative of each character that I could almost hear their voice actors speaking it.
Delightfully simple.

I got it because I wanted a physical piece of ATLA art that shows ALL characters in some kind of story - including Toph, Momo & Appa.

Definitely not regretting it - PLUS there's some cute & helpful "comic making process" bits in the end!

A slight and short Avatar: The Last Airbender story for younger readers. It's very straight forward and easy to figure out what's happening from the start.

The art style is so cute. Wish this vol would be longer and can’t wait if there are more coming. I agree this is best for younger readers.
