Puh. Schwierig zu sagen, was da zwischen uns schiefgelaufen ist.
Aber es hat einfach nicht gefunkt. Ich fand die Story uninteressant, mich haben die Figuren nicht berührt und Schreibstil, sowie die Dialoge wirkten auf mich etwas hölzern.
Alles in allem musste ich mich doch etwas quälen, und trotz meiner Hoffnung auf Besserung, konnte mich das Buch nicht abholen.
Vielleicht lag es aber an meiner Stimmung und den Erwartungen, die ich hatte.
Ich würde jedem raten, sich ein eigenes Bild zu machen (:

A reread of a new edition of one of my favourites from years ago!

Long ago in the land of Aorn, the despot Lord Regret was killed by a group of Threaders - users of magic who can twist the threads of the Great Spell to their will. His powers went into the eight Threaders - now called Wardens - who used their power for good or ill, and eventually were all killed. Now, decades later, the Wardens are back to continue or change their paths.

I first read THE LEGACY OF LORD REGRET back in 2013 when I found it whilst shelving at the library. I was immediately taken by the setting and the characters. Early this year I was thinking about a re-read, and looking on eBay for copies as the original books are out of print when the author Sam Bowring posted on Facebook asking for beta readers/reviewers for a new publishing run! Sometimes I believe that kismet exists.

I really enjoy the magic system in STRANGE THREADS - it rides a good line between Sanderson-style magic rules and Tolkien-style wishy-washy 'magic is magic'. I just upset somebody by suggesting that Brando Sando and JRR are the only two kinds of magic writer. The different abilities that each Warden picks up from their defeat of Lord Regret are interesting - being able to sense injustice, constantly spewing out random blessings to the world around, being able to 'steal' threads from the Spell and rhyme things out of existence. You have the standard super strength, freezing time, but they're mixed in with far more interesting and unique concepts.

We get POV chapters from all of the Wardens bar one who is killed very early and they are all pretty well rounded and interesting to see their perspectives. The 'evil' Wardens, Despirrow and Forger, get a fair bit of time and development - Forger moreso, who feels more like a character whereas Despirrow is kind of a cardboard cutout of 'Bad Guy'. It feels like Bowring needed a character to take out his edgy on. I didn't notice the overuse of r*pe as a threat/event when I originally read it but I certainly did this time.

Rostigan, our protagonist, has a kind of relatable melancholy to him and his relationship with his bard companion/lover Tarzi - while a little trite - is believable and sweet. The twist of his character is also rather good but I think that it could have done with being pushed back to later on in the book or perhaps in the second book as it happens pretty early on, but that would require a fair bit of shuffling of the plot.

Overall, really enjoyed my reread! Annoyed with myself that it took me so long but I do struggle reading ebooks. I encourage any of my fantasy reader friends to try it out, this series really deserves a lot more attention, especially from a local Aussie author.

Yeah, wieder ein Buch meiner „ #10für2021 “-Challenge geschafft und damit nur noch 2 Bücher auf dem SuB (Stapel ungelesener Bücher).
Tja und jetzt bin ich auch nicht böse, dass ich das Buch solange habe ich ruhen lassen. Wirklich gefesselt hat mich die Story nicht. Und das hat mehrere Gründe.
Die Story klingt spannend und es hätte mehr daraus gemacht werden können. So plätscherte sie dahin und selbst die Action-Szenen kamen recht langatmig daher. Die Spannung blieb auf niedrigem Niveau und ich konnte es immer zur Seite legen, wenn die Umstände es erforderten.
Durch Rückblicke, erfährt der Leser, warum es zu dem jetzigen Status Quo gekommen ist. Aber das war manchmal verwirrend. Okay, oder ich war so wenig in die Geschichte gezogen, dass ich evtl. Kleinigkeiten überlesen habe.
Und zu guter Letzt die Figuren. Sie sind interessant, aber nicht fesselnd. Keine schlich sich in mein Herz und auch die Geheimnisse und Wendungen in ihren Leben waren recht interessant, aber nicht mitreißend.
Ich fragte mich häufig, ob es an Rostigan liegt, der des Kämpfens müde und somit auch die Handlung „müde“ ist. Aber mittlerweile habe ich den Gedanken verworfen, das wäre dann doch zu weit hergeholt.
Also alles in allem ein interessantes Fantasy-Buch, welches mich nicht wirklich in seinen Bann ziehen konnte. Deshalb gibt es 3 Tränen-Sterne.

Rostigan ist des Kämpfens müde. Den Ruhm, den er in zahlreichen Schlachten erworben hat, hat er nie gewollt. Dennoch weicht die Bardin Tarzi, die ein Lied über seine nächste Heldentat verfassen möchte, nicht von seiner Seite. Da erreichen sie das einst so prächtige Silberstein, doch die große Stadt mit den weißen Türmen wurde vollständig vernichtet. Rostigan erkennt, dass Tarzis Wunsch erfüllt werden wird. Er wird sich einer neuen Gefahr stellen müssen, der größten überhaupt vorstellbaren. Die Wächter sind zurückgekehrt!

Да намериш наистина оригинално фентъзи в наши дни, е като да спечелиш от фентъзийната духовна лотария , където ти се падат три дракончета, от което едното е гей, второто живее в три паралелни свята едновременно, а третото знае какво мислиш, и го повтаря като известен фокусник от всеки ред, който минава пред очите ти. Поне аз така си го представям. В действителност все още има широк друм за оригинален поглед на обичайно повтаряеми и предвидими сценарии, които въпреки всичко все още ни радват и стоплят алергичните към реалност сърца с щипка драконов дъх. Пак на дракони ме изби. Не, че тук ги има, просто интересното е, че ги няма, поне не и в класическия им вид. Но не е само това.

Странни нишки започва след времето на една неразказана, но абсолютно епична история в клишето за добрия млад маг, покварен от силата на магията, който се опитва да прекрои света и времето по свой вкус и със собствена кофа лудост за фон, докато не бива спрян от осем треперещи мага със сравнително ограничени сили, както магически , така и психически, които вадят правилната клечка от купа на късмета, и някак си надвиват лорда на мрака. Само че тук се случва немислимото, и вместо задължителния удовлетворителен хепи енд, злото просто си намира нови приемници, нещо като Хищника среща Гандалф, и става мазало. От срещата с мрака се пръкват осем нови-новенички чудовища, всяко от които вади на показ най-тъмните баки с душевни екскременти и залива себе си и околните с вонята на най-сладкото бездушно зло. Но това, както казах е неразказаната история – за нея се намеква, тук-там някой неясен флашбек ти дава по парченце информация, което трябва внимателно да слепваш в нелицеприятен пъзел, посветен на това колко всъщност много са прецакани героите , тръгналите да се сражават със змейовете по принцип.

Самият сценарий на добрите се превръщат в зли ще кажете , че ви напомня на стандартна Марвелска история. Къде е оригиналното? Ами най-вече в думите, в езика, в начина на водене на историята, където сивите и черните герои задушават под ботуша си ясното бяло, и така не ти става ясно дали в крайна сметка на последната страница сме победили или не, и дали целостта на един свят си струва жертвата на най-добрите му деца. Злите са в някои моменти доста добри, морално справедливи и етично приемливи поне от съвремнна атеистично-хедонистистична гледна точка, а добрите са най-малкото неприятни в по-голямата част на времето., поделящи присъствието си между малодушно мрънкотене, търсене на виновни за неслучило се щастие, и въобще дразнещо мандахерцане във време за вземане на бързи решения. Яростта, жаждата за власт и алчността завладяват наравно всичките ни полубогове, и само въпрос на адски късмет е , че нещо от земята им оцелява въобще след сблъсъка на амбиции.

Имаме принц на болката, достоен за излязъл от ума на всевеликия Баркър; благородник – жесток изнасилвач, можещ да спира времето, за да удовлетворява страсти и болки едновременно; каменен призрак – асасин, търсещ баланса между силите, но помагащ по хермесовски на всички страни за всеки случай; получудовище – полувещица можеща да открадва света в стихове, унищожавайки с еднаква лекота дървета и градове за забавление. Тия бяха отбор Черна черешка. Бяла ягодка се състои от отчаяна суицидна белокоса жрица, мрънкаща за загубения смисъл на саможертвата; съвсем луд стар магьосник, стоял гладен, жаден и жив три столетия със съответните последствия; див тъпоумен богатир, живеещ за да въздаде справедливост в много много кръв на върха на меча си, даже насичащ на дреб самия Маркиз Дьо Сад в оплескана с лайна килия, и имаме за разкош и крал на гарваните, който разкъсва очи и сърца с еднаква лекота дори и в най-мирното си състояние. Въобще положението е хвани едните , удари другите.

Прекрасният дарк фентъзи сетинг се допълва достойно от извратени от природата хорица, които, забележете, смятаното за зло всевелико Заклинание е освободило от страх и болка, и ги е одарило със сила и забележителна издръжливост, с което автоматично ги е превърнало във всяващи страх чудовища в очите на нормалните фентъзи хора. Бих могла да се закълна, че съм срещала такива изроди из нощните клубове на София преди години, ама им викахме звезди и модерномислещи освободени младежи. Колко е различно във фентъзито, хм. А нещото им прилично на дракони, се състои от бяла коприна и човешки кости. Доста красива зловещност. Въобще ноарното лошо тук е доста смущаващо разбираемо и даже на някакво ниво приемливо за естетистическия ни съвременен поглед, което е най-малкото… ами странно. Странните нишки излезли от света на Сам Бауринг, някак са преминали страниците и са се влели в сърцата читателски. Дали светът ни е наистина толкова лош, какъвто май го виждат героите – жители на тази написана вселена? Или просто нормалното наше днес е кошмара на фантазията ? Дори и да няма отговори, пътят на въпросите на Бауринг е неоспоримо твърде красив, дори и мрачен, и бих поела по него във всеки мой читателски ден.

Das Konzept dieser Dilogie ist wahnsinnig spannend, aber der Autor hätte mehr draus machen können. Mir fehlte ab der Hälfte des Buches ein mitreißender Spannungsbogen, die Handlung plätscherte eher vor sich hin, bis auf den letzten 10 Seiten plötzlich alles auf einmal passierte. Die Kapitel mit Forger waren schlimm. Das sollten sie zwar sein, aber ich habe schon beim ersten Mal verstanden, dass dieser Wächter grausam und sadistisch ist. Überhaupt sind die meisten Wächter sehr klar, dadurch aber auch stereotyp gezeichnet: Yalenna ist die Gute und Gütige, Forger der Grausame und Sadistische, Braston der Starke und Gerechte, usw. usf.
Ich bin nun gespannt auf Band 2 und hoffe, dass dessen Handlung mitreißender wird und die Charaktere etwas "grauer".

Ursprünglich waren die Wächter tapfere und gute Menschen. Sie sind ausgezogen um den Herrn der Tränen aufzuhalten, der die Welt mit seiner magischen Manipulation in den Abgrund stürzen wollte. Doch etwas ging bei der Rettungsmission schief, die magischen Fäden wurden auf die Retter übertragen, statt das Gleichgewicht wiederherzustellen. Ein Großteil der Helden veränderte sich und wütete daraufhin noch schlimmer, als der Tyrann vor ihnen.

Doch diese Zeiten sind nun schon seit 300 Jahren vorbei. Niemand hat mehr einen der Wächter gesehen. In den letzten Jahren gab es zahlreiche andere Schlachten zu schlagen, bei denen sich der Krieger Rostigan einen Namen gemacht hat. Die Bardin Tarzi hat sich an seine Fersen geheftet, auf der Suche nach Stoff für neue Lieder und Geschichten. Rostigan ist das alles so leid und doch scheint sich Tarzis Wunsch zu erfüllen. Denn die Wächter sind zurückgekehrt.

Es gibt High Fantasy Bücher, die erschlagen den Leser von Beginn an mit Umfang und Komplexität. Viele Leser schreckt ab, sich erst in eine Welt hineinlesen zu müssen, bis man sie richtig genießen kann. Bei "Der Herr der Tränen" fand ich es unheimlich gelungen, wie leicht dieser Einstieg fällt und damit beweist, dass auch High Fantasy von Beginn an zugänglich sein kann. Anfangs lernt man Rostigan kennen, einen Krieger, der es leid ist zu kämpfen. Das passt seiner Begleiterin Tarzi gar nicht. Sie ist auf der Suche nach Stoff für neue Lieder und dafür müssen Heldentaten her.

Heldentaten gab es allerdings in der Vergangenheit zu Genüge. Ein mächtiger Fadenwirker, der Herr der Tränen, hatte Aorn unterworfen und drohte das magische Gleichgewicht zu zerstören. Er wurde gestoppt, doch aus den Rettern wurden noch schlimmere Kreaturen. Die Magie des Tyrannen lebte in ihnen weiter. Mir hat es gut gefallen, wie der Autor einem im Laufe des Buches sämtliche Wächter näherbringt. In wechselnden Perspektiven erfährt man, welche Menschen sie früher waren und was nun aus ihnen geworden ist. Die Diebin, Forger, Salarkis, Despirrow usw., alles Gestalten, denen man lieber nicht begegnen möchte. Demgegenüber stehen wenige Ausnahmen, die es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht haben, die anderen Wächter aufzuhalten. Mit Rückkehr der Wächter geht alles wieder von vorne los. Gut gegen Böse. Grausamkeit gegen Gnade. Ein Wettlauf gegen die Zeit.

Gelungen fand ich auch, wie greifbar und erklärbar das Magiesystem ist. Hier wird nicht mit Blitzen aus dem Nichts geschleudert, sondern alles basiert auf einer Struktur aus magischen Fäden. Verändert man die Struktur, verändert man dadurch die Umwelt. Daher haben die "Fadenwirker" ihren Namen. Jeder der Wächter hat zusätzlich noch besondere Fähigkeiten. Umso bitterer, dass die veränderten Wächter diese Fähigkeiten gnadenlos missbrauchen.

Ein wenig Schade fand ich, dass Rostigans Entwicklung und Stellung in der Geschichte zunehmend in den Hintergrund gerät. Nach einer schockierenden Enthüllung zur Mitte hin dreht sich später eigentlich nur noch alles um die Wächter. "Normale" Menschen sind eher Beiwerk und fast schon machtlos. Nichtdestotrotz ist dieser Kampf fesselnd und von Anfang bis Ende spannend. Hut ab davor, wie Sam Bowring dieser Welt Leben eingehaucht hat und mit seiner Geschichte durchgehend begeistern kann.

Fazit

"Der Herr der Tränen" ist ein faszinierender Auftakt. Innerhalb kürzester Zeit taucht man in eine Geschichte ein, in der es nur auf dem ersten Blick ausschließlich um "Gut gegen Böse" geht. Denn auf beiden Seiten gibt es Grauzonen. Am Ende wollen beide gewinnen, es bleibt abzuwarten, ob es auch für alle anderen (eigentlich unbeteiligten) Menschen ein gutes Ende nimmt. Besonders hat mir gefallen, wie zugänglich die Welt und ihr Magiesystem sind. Darüber hinaus werden einem die Hauptakteure Stück für Stück näher gebracht, ohne mit Informationen zu überfordern. Ich hätte mir nur gewünscht, dass Rostigan weniger zur Nebenfigur abdriftet. Und dieses abrupte Ende, fies! Aber ich freue mich jetzt schon auf den Abschluss!

Zum Inhalt

300 Jahre sind vergangen, seit die Wächter den Herrn der Tränen umgebracht und seine unmenschliche Macht gebrochen haben – denn dieser veränderte einst die Große Magie und griff in die Natur der Dinge ein, sodass der Schleier der Welt zerriss. Doch der Riss, der sich durch das innerste Gewebe der Existenz gezogen hat, wurde durch den Tod von Regret nicht geheilt und die willenlosen Geschöpfe, die der Herr der Tränen um sich geschart hatte, wachen noch heute unbezwungen über das Tal des Friedens.

Der Ritter Rostigan zieht mit seiner Liebsten durch die Lande Aorns. Die Bardin Tarzi bewundert den alternden Kämpfer, den Held, der sich in einer großen Schlacht einen Namen gemacht hat. Doch er ist des Kämpfens müde geworden, seine ruhmreichen Tage gehören der Vergangenheit an. Als sie jedoch entdecken, dass die prächtige Stadt Silberstein von einem Augenblick auf den anderen verschwunden ist, liegt die Vermutung nahe, dass die Wächter zurückgekehrt sind – denn sie haben die Ermordung des Herrn der Tränen nicht unbeschadet überstanden. Für Rostigan eine Herausforderung, der er sich nicht entziehen kann …

Meine Meinung

Seit ich das Buch zum ersten Mal gesehen habe, hat mich das Cover magisch angezogen. Es zeigt passend zur Handlung den Riss der Großen Magie, die in den Wolken klafft und den einsamen Ritter, der sich endlich seiner Vergangenheit stellen muss.

Der Schreibstil ist sehr eigenwillig, teilweise fast schon nüchtern und ich musste mich sehr konzentrieren, um der Handlung zu folgen. Es wirkt alles sehr kurz angebunden und ich fand nur wenige versteckte „Schätze“ zwischen den Zeilen. Rückblicke und Erinnerungen unterbrechen das aktuelle Geschehen und haben mich anfangs eher irritiert als mir geholfen, mich in der Geschichte zurecht zu finden. Der etwas trockene Schreibstil wirkte manchmal gefühllos und ich konnte mich dadurch anfangs nicht wirklich in die Charaktere einfühlen.

Rostigan war mir von Anfang an sympathisch. Er gefällt sich in seiner Rolle des alternden, zurückgezogenen Kriegers und überlässt sich gerne der Gesellschaft der quicklebendigen, sprunghaften Bardin Tarzi. Umso enttäuschter war ich, dass es anfangs die meiste Zeit um die Wächter ging, die zurückkehren. Alle Figuren erhalten einen prägnanten Auftritt und besondere Charakterzüge, dennoch hat es einige Zeit gedauert, bis ich mich mit dem Verlauf der Handlung anfreunden konnte. Trotzdem hat mich die Stimmung nicht losgelassen und ich war neugierig, was weiter passiert.

Bis zur Mitte war es ein gleichmäßiger Lesefluss ohne bemerkenswerte Spannung, trotz allem hat mich diese Welt fasziniert. Als dann etwa in der Mitte des Buches eine Wende eintrat, ein neuer Aspekt, wurde ich völlig an das Geschehen gefesselt; es wurde sehr interessant, das Tempo angezogen und die steigende Anspannung riss mich bis zum Schluss mit. Auch wurden die Zusammenhänge immer klarer und das unerwartete Ende ließ mich in großer Erwartung auf den zweiten Teil zurück.
Die Idee der Welt und ihrer Magiefäden ist sehr speziell und lässt noch einige Fragen offen. Hier hätte ich gerne noch einige Antworten gehabt und denke, dass diese im abschließenden Band aufgeklärt werden.

Fazit

Nach dem unerwarteten Anfang hat ein neuer Aspekt die Geschehnisse in interessante Bahnen gelenkt und die erhoffte Spannung entstehen lassen. Mit dem Schreibstil konnte ich mich nicht wirklich anfreunden, trotzdem hat mich die Idee fasziniert. Nach der packenden zweiten Hälfte hat das Buch auf jeden Fall 4 Sterne verdient.

Quick and extremely well written read. For a 400 page book, Bowring does and awesome job at world building! I love the multiple POV’s and the characters are all so well written! Don’t pass this one up!

A group of heroes defeat a dark lord who took part of the world as power. They inherit his powers afterwards. It twists the majority of them. Most of them die killing each other only to return 300 years later. This is where the story begins. A great fantasy story about good and evil and in between. Loved it.

I've learned that tempering my expectation when going in to a new book is the way to go about these things too.

I have only read under a hundred books since this year. Some really good, some okay, while others, not very good at all. I'm really glad that I was able to find and read a lot more books that I've enjoyed and found really great. And I started to expect the next book to be as enjoyable as the last. Oh, how naive I was.

I've only read a few fantasy books, and there were a few books that I tried to like but just couldn't. And I went with low expectations when I began to read The Legacy of Lord Regret. And oh my! I was very pleased and surprised at how much I really like the book. Every page was treat! There's a lot of action, plotting and interesting backstories. Basically, it's a fantasy book that I've always wanted to read. A world that's already seen the rise of a mad powerful wizard, the conception of a band of powerful individuals to try and defeat the mad sorcerer, to the downfall of said sorcerer. It made the world in The Legacy of Lord Regret feel firm, real and filled in. The characters aren't trying to save the world for the first time, no, they're trying to save it the second time, or more accurately, finish saving it.

There's a lot to like about The Legacy of Lord Regret. It's characters for one. Terzi is the best, no one can change my mind. I just wished she had a more active role in the story, but I'm just nitpicking. For a serious story, I was pleasantly surprised that there were quite a few scenes that made me chuckle. And due to that, it made me more invested in the characters.

Basically, The Legacy of Lord Regret sits as one of the best fantasy books for me. It's a really great book in my opinion. The world is interesting and the characters are well written, that talk and act like real people. The way Bowring wrote the dialogues is very interesting to me because it's not too much, unlike how other fantasy books I've read were written. It feels right, fitting. And I think that has also set this book apart from the other ones I've read.

And that's all about it really. I read this book not expecting too much and was then blown away by how good it was.

I was lucky enough to be able to read this before it comes out in stores. I've never read Sam Bowring before but I am so glad Orbit Australia gave me the chance to. This book is amazing and I was hooked from the first page! Bowring writes in a way where he manages to ensnare you very easily into the story and he never lets go. Interesting characters that make you wonder where their allegiances lay collide with a well developed magic system and story, making the Legacy of Lord Regret impossible to put down. Read this!

I can't wait for the next book.

Der Herr der Tränen hat mich so manches Mal dazu gebracht, das Buch fast abzubrechen. Es gab interessante Parts, aber an manchen Stellen hat man gemerkt, wie schlecht das Buch gealtert ist (hoffentlich - ich mag es einfach nicht mehr lesen).

In einer Welt, die einst gegen das Böse gekämpft und vermeintlich gewonnen hat, ist der Krieger Rostigan mit der Bardin Tarzi unterwegs. Doch Rostigan ist nicht ganz, wer er vorgibt zu sein, und bald entdecken sie, dass die Wächter zurück sind: berühmte Helden, die einst gegen den Herr der Tränen gezogen sind, um die Welt zu retten. Ihr Vorhaben ging aber nicht ganz so gut aus, wie gehofft, denn die Kräfte des Herrn der Tränen sind in die Wächter gegangen und haben sie allesamt verändert ... ohne dass das wahre Übel wirklich aus der Welt verschwunden wäre.

Soweit der wirklich interessante Teil. Das mit den Wächtern und den Verzweigungen mit der Vergangenheit der Welt hat mich wirklich interessiert und auch ein bisschen an Askir erinnert. Leider sind die Bösen durch diese Backstory auch einfach nur Böse. Sie haben absolut keine Motivation außer Spaß an Erobern, Morden, Foltern, Quälen, Vergewaltigen ... es war absolut unerträglich, Kapitel aus einem POV zu lesen, wo jemand nur darüber nachdenkt, wie sehr diese Frau sich winden und schreien wird und was man dann der und der antut. WARUM?

Ehrlich, wenn du, Leser*in dieses Reviews, das hier liest und auch schreibst: es braucht solche Szenen nicht. Einfach nein. Antagonisten sollten eigene Ziele und Wünsche haben. Und diese sollten nicht nur in stupiden "ich will vergewaltigen, das macht ja solchen Spaß!" bestehen. Das will einfach niemand mehr lesen.

Entsprechend keine Empfehlung für das Buch. Ich habe darüber nachgedacht, ob ich die Fortsetzung lesen will, weil mich die Sage an sich interessiert hat, und ich die entsprechenden Szenen ja auch überspringen könnte, aber ehrlich gesagt gibt es viele gute Bücher da draußen auf dem Buchmarkt und ich nutze meine Lesezeit dann lieber für ein anderes Buch.

This was a great read. I used to read a lot of fantasy, but haven’t read much for quite a long time as many of the recent books in this genre all seemed much of a muchness. But, I’m happy to report, not this one!
Readers have to understand that this book is, as the author points out in his blurb, a story split over two books. So at the end of this book, you don’t have the complete story - it’s not a cliffhanger as such, just incomplete. However, the second book is already out so there is no waiting, and the story will be complete at the end of the two books.
I’m writing this having read both books, so it’s easier to report on the entirety of the story than the first half. It is a really unusual, good story. It remind me of some of the more epic fantasy stories - you know the ones I mean - but this talented author has made up a pretty unusual device, the ‘threads’ of the title, by which reality is formed and can be manipulated. I don’t think it is too much of a spoiler to say that. This has given him a great idea to hang the plot on, and our main characters are those who can manipulate these threads. And it is so much more interesting than the usual ‘magic’ book as it has more a whiff of physics about it.
There are a great bunch of characters, well written and believable. There are also characters that I, as a reader, cared about, which I always find invaluable to keep my interest in the book. Plenty of action and some pretty good twists, and a very satisfied feeling at the end. It’s definitely worth reading, the ‘world’ is easy to understand and the world building done with a light hand so as not to be tedious. Give it a try! I thought it was great.

I have a variety of pet peeves when I read fantasy, and this book checked all my boxes.

Multiple antagonists gratuitously partake in violence and sexual assault. These topics must be broached with finesse in any piece of fiction. Sadly, they were only used for shock factor. Some SA scenes were written through a completely fetishized lens (gross).

The plot twists were also abysmal. Every character chose the least exciting possibility at every opportunity. Don't even get me started on the ending.

Overall, the magic system was the best part of the book. 3/10

Mesmerising adventure fantasy that hooks you in from the beginning. This is my first read of author Sam Bowring and I was not disappointed. Many twists and turns with a bit of humor made this a delightful read.

Highly recommend and will most certainly be looking for more from this author.

Intrigue, Betrayal

At first it was slow start, but soon it was picked up. I didn't enjoy it as much as I enjoy my other normal reads. I guessed a few things in the plot an turned out o be right. The names were a little hard to understand. Couldn't remember all of them, poor Mergan felt so sorry for him. Glad that Karack tried to change his ways though.

I absolutely loved this book! Beautifully written with a simple/easy-to-follow storyline. It reminds me of a children's novel except it's for adults. Perfect for me. Funny, whimsical, adventurous. It has everything and I look forward to reading the second book.

Auf „Der Herr der Tränen“ bin ich durch Goodreads aufmerksam geworden. Überzeugt hat mich dann aber doch das Cover, mit dem einsamen Krieger, dem riesigen Mond und dem blutroten Riss am Himmel. Es sieht nicht nur genial aus, sondern passt zum Buch.

Meine Erwartungen: Eine zerstörte Welt, die zu viele Kriege und Schlachten erlebt hat, gebrochenen Helden, die nur Frieden suchen und einem vermeidlich vernichtetem Bösen, dass sich wieder erhebt...
Gefunden habe war etwas ganz anderes. Eine friedliche Welt, deren Helden und Monster schon lange verschwunden sind. Eine Welt, die zwar noch Schlachten austrägt, die aber nicht mehr die Geschicke der Welt beeinflussen und deren Helden zwar bekannt sind, aber die eben nicht mehr die Retter der Welt sind.
Die Geschichte die sich dann entfaltet erinnert mehr an die Fortsetzung einer alten und vergessenen Geschichte, deren Helden und Monster wieder lebendig werden und die ihre Kämpfe weiter auszutragen, doch ohne zu wissen wie und warum sie zurück gekehrt sind...

Die Geschichte von diesem Punkt aus aufzubauen war mal was Neues. Zwar boten sich so noch keine Gelegenheiten für große, epische Schlachten. Dennoch war die Geschichte wirklich interessant, Positionen mussten bezogen werden, Informationen gesammelt und neue Bündnisse geschlossen werden. Klingt im ersten Moment nicht spannend, bietet aber die Möglichkeit sich näher mit der Hintergrundgeschichte der Charaktere zu beschäftigen.

Die Figuren, die Sam Bowring geschaffen hat für dieser Geschichte sind sowohl Helden aus auch Monster und während nach und nach die Geschichte des Herrn der Tränen enthüllt wird beginnt der Leser die Figuren immer besser kennen zu lernen. Man beginnt zu begreifen, wie aus Helden Monster werden konnten und was sie antreibt, das sie manchmal eben auch einfach keine Chance hatten ihrem Schicksal zu entkommen.
Besonders gefallen hat mir die Figur Rostigan, der zunächst nur ein alter Schwertkämpfer ist und eigentlich nur noch seine Ruhe haben möchte und trotzdem ist er der erste der bemerkt, dass die Wächter wieder zurück gekehrt sind. Zwar ist klar, dass ihm eine besondere Rolle zukommt, dennoch beginnt man sich zu wundern, was es mit ihm auf sich hat, nach dem er die Diebin, eine der Wächter, fast schon mühelos besiegen kann. Mit dem was man im Laufe des Buches dann über ihn erfährt hätte ich einfach nie gerechnet und hab entsprechende Augen gemacht. Aber auch gerade seine persönliche Geschichte macht ihn zu einer Figur, die ich einfach lieben muss. Ich hab schließlich so eine kleine Schwäche für Figuren die ein dunkles Geheimnis haben.

Das Magiesystem ist an sich nicht besonders kompliziert gestaltet macht aber auf Grund der Art einiges her. Denn Magier werden Fadenwirker genannt und können eben die Fäden der Welt beeinflussen, wenn auch nur bis zu einem bestimmten Punkt. Dezent, einfach, passt.

Ich stelle ja nie gerne Ansprüche an ein Buch und obwohl man sich bei vielen Dingen wie Worldbuilding oder dem Magiesystem noch ein bisschen mehr Tiefgang wünschen könnte ist dies Buch doch grundsolide und es macht eine Menge Spaß es zu lesen. Ich freue mich schon sehr auf den zweiten Teil.

I'm going to be honest with you here: I had forgotten exactly how mesmerizing Sam Bowring's writing is. I was hooked into this story moments after I began reading! The novel is equally driven by action and its characters, executed brilliantly by Bowring in his unique style. A wonderfully spun tale of magic, camaraderie and betrayal, The Legacy of Lord Regret sets up the Strange Threads duology beautifully, and I'm eagerly awaiting the sequel, The Lord of Lies, to bring this tale to (I'm sure) its thrilling conclusion.

The novel begins with the travellers Rostigan and Tarzi discovering that a whole town has disappeared. As though it never existed! As they continue on their journey, more strange tales reach them until it is clear that the Wardens, thought long gone, have returned. Bowring gradually introduces his readers to the Wardens, from the well-intentioned Yalenna to the sadistic Forger, and through each of them we learn a little more of the past and of this new world. I enjoyed Rostigan's character the most because he seems at odds with himself: he has created an identity for himself and has almost convinced himself of its reality, but the return of the Wardens has opened up some deep wounds and he has some hard truths to face. In contrast, I didn't like Tarzi much at all - as a performer she is skilled in using her body to get what she wants (and not just in the obvious way you are thinking) and she's skilled at manipulation, and something about her just didn't sit right with me.

Moments of emotionally charged character development and heart stopping action are cleverly interspersed throughout this book, resulting in a book with few, if any, lulls. It kept me guessing, and every time I thought I had things figured out something would happen and everything changed again. One of the wonderful things about Bowring's writing style is that he doesn't under-estimate his audience - so anytime he wants you to be in the dark about something, you are truly in the dark, which keeps the suspense levels high. The plot elements tie together beautifully and I enjoyed every minute of it.

The calibre of Australian fantasy keeps improving, and Sam Bowring's latest novel is a prime example! The Legacy of Lord Regret is a must read for all fans of Fantasy, and anyone planning their first foray into the genre should consider Bowring's earlier works: The Broken Well Trilogy.

Rostigan ist des Kämpfens müde. Den Ruhm, den er in zahlreichen Schlachten erworben hat, hat er nie gewollt. Dennoch weicht die Bardin Tarzi, die ein Lied über seine nächste Heldentat verfassen möchte, nicht von seiner Seite. Da erreichen sie das einst so prächtige Silberstein, doch die große Stadt mit den weißen Türmen wurde vollständig vernichtet. Rostigan erkennt, dass Tarzis Wunsch erfüllt werden wird. Er wird sich einer neuen Gefahr stellen müssen, der größten überhaupt vorstellbaren. Die Wächter sind zurückgekehrt!

Meine Einschätzung:
Nun habe ich auch den "Herr der Tränen" gelesen und zunächst muss ich sagen, dass ich es gut fand, dass der Verlag eine kleine Anmerkung auf die Rückseite druckte, dass "Herr der Tränen" Bd. 1 eines Zweiteilers ist.

Ansonsten war das Buch ganz okay.
In einigen Belangen erinnerte mich die Handlung ein wenig an "Das Zeitalter der Fünf" von Trudi Canavan, fragt aber jetzt bitte nicht nach, es war einfach so *lach*.

Der Schreibstil war recht angenehm zu lesen, aber nicht so fesselnd wie ich hoffte, denn zu leicht ließ ich mich ablenkne und ich merkte, dass ich stellenweise Absätze einfach nur überflog.

Die Idee hinter der Handlung mutete spannend und interessant an, aber sor richtig hinter den Sinn des Buches bin ich noch nicht gestiegen. Die Handlung plätschert fröhlich vor sich hin ohne nennenswerte Höhepunkte - finde ich zumindest, auch wenn mich der Autor einem wirklich SEHR überrascht hat, doch das war es auch schon.

Bei den Charakteren war mir außer Rostigan keiner wirklich sympathisch. Besonders Tarzi mochte ich gar nicht. In meinen Augen hofft sie zu sehr auf Ansehen und Ruhm und will sich profilieren.
Auch die anderen Wächter rissen mich nicht wirklich vom Hocker. Sie blieben irgendwie blass und farblos.

Alles in allem ein schwacher Fantasyroman, der mich nicht wirklich mitreißen und überzeugen konnte.

Mein Fazit:
3 Sterne - schwache Lektüre, ob ich Bd. 2 lesen were: keine Ahnung.

Isn't a dualogy refreshing? There's also no hiding the fact that I fancy the way the pair's spines form a striking, single silhouette image when placed side by side.

Onward -- to the content!

I was immediately struck by Bowring's writing style -- it is more fluid and modern, and less arduous and Tolkienesque -- having spent some time in the detail-heavy worlds of Rothfuss, Cooper and Canavan, of late, the contrast was marked and the relief was great. I needed me some Bowring, even if I am looking forward to returning to the Black Magician series soon. Please don't misunderstand, the descriptions are creative, vivid and effective...it's just not...well...constipated. As in Orson Scott Card, there is enough description, and the narrative momentum reigns over the painstaking painting of a scene.

Overall, the story is thrilling.

Also, clever.

There is this air of daring in the novel -- the laws of magic, the characters' power, and the confident plunge into a 300-year-old story - all invigorating. And the core team of legendary wardens are lent legend status, credibility and depth as a result of this plunge -- the spontaneous and early resurrection of characters is one of the daring + invigorating devices I loved about this book.

The characters are diverse in nature and serve as epicenters for engrossing spectacles.

The villains are certainly warped individuals, and we do spend time with them -- an editorial choice that can get my skin crawling if not kept in careful check -- but I think Bowring has managed to strike a fine balance between the scenes with the sick and depraved antagonists and those spent with our heroes. He also masterfully portrays wickedness without calling upon our sympathies.

I picked up this book randomly at my local bookstore when I was looking for something new by an Australian fantasy author I had never heard of before, and I was not disappointed. I read it in two days, ok maybe one and a half, which is something of a feat when I was at the beach with two little kids at the time.

Clearly that means it has excellent pacing and a decent plot. If it suffered anywhere it was in characterisation. The main character, Rostigan, is the best developed character of the lot and he carries the plot without difficulty, but there is a lot of black and white here, and where there is grey the characters are drawn with great simplicity. It is usually characters that carry my interest, so I was surprised, after how much I enjoyed reading this, to realise that I didn't really give a damn about any of them. That being said, they were all likeable and believable, just none of them touched my heart in that special way that makes you really invest.

The idealistic world (read beautiful cities and clean hobos) was nicely drawn, the magic was different to anything I had read before, and it didn't shy away from the gruesome without getting overly descriptive. It was also refreshing to read a fantasy novel in which very powerful people actually USE their skills/magic to the limit of what they are capable of, rather than the author constantly trying to find ways to keep them from doing so.

All in all it was a quick, easy read with enough to carry you through to the end. Very enjoyable, but I'm not sure it would be complex enough to carry a reread. Definitely recommended to anyone who likes their fantasy fast paced and light on description, perhaps not so much for those who like the in depth epic.

Strange Threads is a fantasy duology so here in The Legacy of Lord Regret we have the first half of the story.

On the world of Aorn the Great Spell that holds the threads of reality together is degrading.

It's 300 years since the Wardens defeated Lord Regret and then died to save the world.

The adventurer Rostigan, together with his companion, the beautiful minstrel Tarzi, has noticed that all is still not right and when a city disappears closely followed by the resurrection of the Wardens, the most powerful threaders, then it's time for him to take an active role in trying to restore order.

With the defeat of Lord Regret well in the past by the time the book starts we are thrown straight into the action and adventure and immersed in this well realised world.

The magic system with the threaders is unique and there are interesting abilities and concepts at play with the good and evil wardens. Strength, blessings, freezing time and rhyming things out of existence to name a few.

Great characters, lots of fun, drama and peril, action, and ultimately all of reality could be at stake. This volume ends abruptly as it's basically one story split across two books so I'm going to be moving swiftly on to volume 2 and maybe my rating will change depending how I feel about the story as a whole.

Sam is an Australian author and comedian and these books were first printed in Australia a good few years ago.
He's now taken ownership of the publishing and in March 2022 released new editions of both volumes which are available as ebooks in the UK. Judging by volume 1 alone they deserve to find a wider audience.

Recommended reading for all fantasy fans.
