This book has very mixed reviews, which I read after I read it myself. Reading those reviews had me questioning my own experience, but I can only share what I felt.
This is a very quick read and only very small parts of it include a story. The majority of it is an analogy and uses brief, simple terms to explain it.
This simple analogy will make you think. It can be related to any part of life and isn't specific enough to give you a step by step guide to achieving your goals. But to me that is the point. This book wants you to think for yourself, to be brave and make mistakes in translating its meaning, to determine what it is saying to you. Not what it is saying to someone else.
There are plenty of self help books for those looking for guided plans but this is not one of them. Look to this book if you are in the mood for a more zen, thought provoking idea that will encourage you to come up with your own answers.

This novel unfolds as a series of motivational aphorisms that grind away on archery as a metaphor for a life well lived. But the conceit quickly gives way to redundancy and triteness, and we’re left trying to shake the image of Stephen Covey wearing a leather tunic with a feather in his cap.
“The Archer” contains many blank pages and many full-page illustrations by German artist Christoph Niemann, as though to give readers quiet space in which to digest such wisdom as, “Trust your intuition and pay no attention to what anyone else may say.”
The whole book evinces the depth of Melania Trump’s “Be Best” program. Which suggests at least part of the problem: The superficiality of “The Archer” is exacerbated by its deadening style. A sentence with a shaft this crooked should never have left the quiver: “Once the arrow has gone, it will not come back, so it is better to interrupt a shot, because the movements that led up to it were not sufficiently precise and correct, than to act carelessly, simply because the bow was fully drawn and the target was waiting.”
I have no idea what that arrow was aiming for, but somehow it seems to have impaled Jonathan Livingston Seagull.
The oracular urge runs hot through Coelho’s lines but rarely generates much light. . . .

Why present a potato as double cheese burst pizza?!
That blurb is the most misleading one ever.
This isn't a story. Only the first 2-3 and the last few pages mentions the characters.
Otherwise the book is actually full of half-filled pages of 3-4 lines of teachings and preachings.
Actually a wholesome story would have been nice like it's promised in the blurb and that's how irritation bubbled up with each passing page and yes, more mind cursing for the great betrayal once again with a book (is it actually a book?!) which could have ended well in just 40 pages or so and have been stretched - like for the world to see that the endless loops of a metaphorical intestine if stretched to a straight line would cover that much distance kind of long, which the world do not need in real - and also, the book is quite boring.
I would have liked it if it was honestly marketed as something of a self-help kind of motivational book. Because it is that. But I have been fed with false hopes of finding a good story of a little guy asking big questions (which the half-filled pages do not say anything about) getting answers for them.
But instead, it's like a manual of posing and pausing and quoting and blah-blahing.
These things can be found in many other self-help books as well. If it was an old book from a library, I would have argued with the librarian feeling sure that the book have been tampered with with some unknown contents put in between.
So clever of you, author, to actually make the book look like an actual book with a story with just the first and the last few pages with proper sentences and mention of the characters.
Otherwise the inbetween is like a raw potato (yes, of course, we can make use of the potato like we can use those quotes and lines of motivation out of nowhere but believe me, I expect a proper whole story when I buy a book for the story and not just lines) delivered to me with the double cheese burst pizza box.
Yes, I see what you are doing there.
And hence, the reveal!
And tada! I am never going to buy your next book again.

So far I had loved all the books by Paulo Coelho. Unfortunately I was very disappointed with his latest book. There is a short story that works as a metaphor and -for me at least- not a very successful one. The words of wisdom sounded completely barren and pretentious.

What a delight to receive Paulo’s latest bestseller this week - it is a wonderful book for several reasons. It’s a beautiful keepsake volume with inspiring illustrations by award-winning illustrator Christoph Niemann that are in perfect harmony with the subject of this book: inspirational meditations on Zen and the art of archery.
Zen Buddhism can, for those of us growing up in the west, be very difficult to grasp with it’s multiple paradoxes, but this book eases the reader into the very essence of the philosophy through the analogy of archery. As Paulo says in his blog, ‘It is a short book, you don’t need to complicate things. In fact, life is simple. We complicate a lot. And a fable or allegory talks to the hidden parts of ourselves.’
Why did Paulo choose the art of archery to reveal the life-art of Zen? Besides being a weapon of war, in many ancient texts on Buddhism, listed among the sacred implements is the bow and arrow. The premise is simple; by understanding the art of archery, we can learn the art of Zen - which is the art of life. In addition to this, archery is Paulo’s favourite sports pastime, so he has a knowledge of the intricacies of the skills needed.
What can we learn from archery about Zen and the art of life? Through his poetic and soulful thoughts, Paulo offers insights into a number of key lessons from Zen:
Know and respect your allies in the contest, while learning from their successes and failures.
The bow is your greatest asset and is the source of your energy.
Your intention is within the arrow.
The object of your focus is the target.
How you execute a successful shot - from your posture, through letting fly the arrow, to hitting the target - is the same as the skills you need in life.
The Archer will not leave my bedside and my guess is over many years, I will subliminally commit most of the wisdom it imparts to memory. Even if I never become a full time student of Zen Buddhism, I will at least have learned to adopt it’s most essential life enriching lessons by making this book my daily companion.

Annyit emlegettem már szegény Coelhót, mégpedig nem feltétlenül hízelgő kontextusban, hogy gondoltam, olvasok tőle valamit*. És ez akadt a kezembe.
Tényleg érdemes az ajánlással kezdeni. "Leonardo Oiticicának, aki egy reggel Saint-Martinben meglátta, hogy a kjúdót gyakorlom, és felvetette e könyv ötletét." No most szinte látom magam előtt.
-Paulo, te meg mit művelsz azzal a nyíllal?
- Hát nyilazok. Vagy trendibben mondva: a kjúdó művészetében gyakorlom magam.
- De basszus, te ilyesmit tudsz, és még nem írtál belőle könyvet? Ez olyan, mintha a saját zsebedből lopnád ki a pénzt! Azonnal húzzál be az íróasztalodhoz, holnap reggelre kész legyél harminc oldalnyi limonádéval!
- Harminc oldal? Nem kevés az?
- Majd rakunk bele illusztációkat, és feltördeljük úgy 150 oldalra. Na, még mindig itt vagy? Tipli!
Különben azt kell mondjam, Coelho jól ír. Elegendő talentummal rendelkezik ahhoz, hogy százszor lerágott közhelyeket úgy írjon meg, mintha azokon maradt volna némi hús. Ez a keleti filozófiába hengergetett pihe-puha gügyögés az íjról meg a nyílról, amit jobb híján könyvnek kell neveznem, áll ötven százalék innen-onnan nyúlt falvédőidézetből, és ötven százalék semmitmondásból, de akkor is, a jó öreg C. zseniális. Az egészet olyan finom homályossággal írja meg, hogy komolyan, néha még én is azt hittem, jelent valamit ez az egész. És hát biztos jelent is valamit - valakinek. Annak, aki annyira szeretne Nagy Tanítókra lelni, hogy tárt karokkal fogadja azt, aki kellő határozottsággal adja elő magát. És C. nagyon elő tudja adni magát, ellentétben mondjuk az akadémiai professzorok és vakcinakutatók jelentős részével. Ráadásul az van, hogy ez az olvasó (az Örök Tanítvány, aki vágyik arra, hogy a bölcs szép szavai úgy mossák le róla a világ szennyét, mintha slaggal veretné végig magát), szóval ez az olvasó nyugodtan hivatkozhat arra, C. valóban zseni kell legyen, hisz ha nem lenne az, akkor ugyan miképp kereshetné dögre magát azzal, hogy zseniségeket mond? A pénz beszél, a kutya meg hadd ugasson. Eme érv előtt pedig nekem is meg kell hajolnom. Bár halkan megjegyzem, ha C. zseni is, zsenialitása nem a világ megértésében nyilvánul meg, hanem abban, hogy tökéletesen átlátja, mi mozgatja azt a speciális olvasót, aki szomjúhozik mindenre, ami kulcsot kínál neki az egyre bonyolultabb világhoz. És tökéletesen tudja azt is, hogy lehet legombolni róla 3500 forintot. Végül is ez egy igen hasznos képesség, valljuk meg.

This was a short but yet very inspiring book✨ Paulo Coelho’s writing really never disappoints~ As someone that took archery lessons for a few months about two years ago this book made me want to go back to that time and try to adapt to the teachings that were mentioned here. I learned a lot of things through this book that could be used in archery lessons and also in our daily lives. Also reminder that this book is not a novel but rather about inspiring teachings about archery, following your dreams and being one with your intentions…

The archer is a character who teaches a young boy on how to use a bow but imparts many lessons applicable to life such as patience, learning from mistakes, take risks. and to embrace changes fate gives us. Some people will not like how the narrator requires the reader to ponder every section but it can be rewarding to ponder what he has to say. The book fits in well in our current era of self improvement literature and it echoes much of the old wisdom being repackaged for modern times. I enjoyed the book's lessons about life and focusing our goals like mastering archery.

طريق القوس قصة قصيرة للروائي البرازيلي باولو كوليو. تدور أحداث القصة في قرية هادئة حيث يتنافس رام سهام محترف مع بطل القصة تيتسويا الذي يعمل نجارا ويبدو متواضعا لا يعلم أحد عنه بأنه من أفضل رماة السهام على الإطلاق. يشهد المنافسة صبي من أهل القرية ويسعى بعد أن شهد المنافسة للتعلم على يد تيتسويا مباديء فن رمي السهام. يقدم تيتسويا نصائحه للصبي والتي تبدو في ظاهرها إرشادات لكيفية حمل القوس ونصب السهام وتحديد الهدف والتصويب ثم الرمي. ولكن الموضوع لا يتعلق بمهارة الرمي والتصويب بقدر ما يقصد به تحديد أهداف الإنسان في حياته. فينبغي على الفرد أن يحدد هدفا معينا يريد تحقيقه في فترة زمنية محددة، يحيط نفسه بجماعة تشاركه اهتماماته وتشجعه على تحقيق طموحه، يقدر روح المجازفة ويخاطر بطريقة محسوبة، يعرف قدراته الحقيقية بصورة موضوعية، يتأمل في نواياه وأعماق مشاعره. رغم قصر القصة إلا أن الكاتب نجح في إيصال الفكرة بصورة شيقة وسهلة وقد تفنن بذكاء في تصوير تحقيق أهداف الإنسان في الحياة وكأنها رام للسهام قد يصيب أو يخيب لكنه لا يكف عن المحاولة.

"The Archer" is a fast read. It amounts to 160 pages including illustrations.
It is not so much a story as it is a collection of insights and advice rolled out in a highly condensed form. In all, it is sparse on character development leaving this reader wanting more. It reads more like a synopsis than a story. Think of it as a Twitter parable.
My advice is to save your money and check it out at your local library. At ten bucks for the Kindle version and roughly another eight for the matching Audible version (not whispersynched), I'm feeling bamboozled - that my money was taken by a famous author who has relied on his reputation as a storyteller to market a pretty skinny story for a premium price.
Borrowing from Coelho, I advise you to seek a metaphorical quiver with more arrows that give substance to the arrowhead jewels of wisdom Paolo has collected to share with you.
If I was a publisher, I'd expect to have this story fleshed out a little more. But who is going to have the temerity to tell Paolo Coelho he can do better?
In teaching my students regarding targets, reconciling the concepts of accuracy versus precision is always a challenge. Accuracy is about hitting your target. Precision deals with how tight groupings fall within the target. It is entirely possible to be accurate without being precise and vice versa. The archer hits its target. Precision-wise? Meh, not so much. In the contest between image versus substance, "The Archer" failed to deliver in the details.
I wonder what a synopsis of this allegory might read like? How about this, "I came, I shot, I left."

Can çok akıllıca bir iş yaparak kitabı çok özel illüstrasyonlarla donatmış. 170 sayfalık bir kitabın ağırlığını hiçbir boyutuyla taşıyamayan metinse bu illüstrasyonları hiç hak etmiyor ne yazık ki. Bir de biz böyle ticari yönü öne çıkan, boş popülerliğe oynayan (Mete Gazoz'a imzalamalar filan) kitapları çok hak etmiyoruz.
Ek: Kitabın İngilizce baskısını inceledim. İllüstrasyonlar tahmin edilebileceği ancak benim belirtmeyi unuttuğum üzere Can'ın fikri değilmiş, başkalarınca yapılan başka illüstrasyonlar anladığıma göre her baskıyı süslüyor.
Bir önemli şeyi de belirtmekte yarar var: Kitap birer-ikişer tümcelik aforizmalardan oluşuyor. This is my first book by Coelho, though I have quite a few of his books in my collection. I don’t know what’s taken me so long to read his work, and I can’t say why his newest book is the first I’ve read, but I’m a new fan! “The Archer” can be interpreted in so many ways - as a lesson on life, following your dreams, honing your craft, overcoming your demons - all of these can be takeaways from this elegantly written story.
The illustrations were beautiful, as well. The simplistic - yet highly metaphorical - language within this tale is poetic and inspiring. Coelho has penned a book that I will return to on multiple occasions throughout my life.
I would recommend this book to fans of Coelho, and for readers looking for inspirational prose through the form of fable-like, or almost mythological, storytelling.

Libro corto de 41 paginas.
Generalmente no suelo hablar de la persona que hace la introducción que habla del autor y el libro, pero creo que es necesario.
Básicamente empece a leer este libro porque, la persona del prologo, afirmaba que era una recopilación de cuentos.
No podéis imaginar mi sorpresa cuando descubrí que se trataba de un libro de autoayuda...
A ver lo que voy a decir es presuntamente, pero me imagino a la persona que hizo la introducción así:
A ver primer capitulo un cuento, ultimo capitulo un cuento, ya esta es una recopilación de cuentos (los 2 únicos cuentos del libro), vamos a coger esta otra introducción cambiamos el nombre por Paulo Coelho, el titulo por El Camino Del Arco y voy a wikipedia y copio la trayectoria, ya tengo la introducción hecha mas rápida que un informe de la agencia NÓOS...
Bueno hablando del libro, primer capitulo es un cuento que va de un maestro arquero que recibe un desafió de otro arquero, capitulo que me gusto mucho y el único que me gusto, luego estará 14 capítulos hablando del camino del arquero que son reflexiones varias y finalmente acabara con un cuento que dará una conclusión a todo lo anterior y nos explicara como aplicar lo del camino del arquero a nuestra vida por si eres un poco lelo y no eres capaz de entender la conclusión tu sólito o como aplicar los capítulos anteriores a tu vida.

I've re-considered my view of this book upon re-reading it:
Paulho Coelho clearly knows a lot about archery, and describes the route to technical mastery well. His description of the reasons for success and failure are well made. However, this book is basically a straight rip-off of 'Zen in the Art of Archery', and has missed some of the finer points of that great book by Eugen Herrigel (written in the 1930s). Coelho's writing is muddled in comparison. It's worth commenting here that Herrigel basically invented the idea that Japanese people had a spiritual connection with archery - Herrigel was very keen on Western mysticism a la Eckhardt, and tried to find it in the mistaken translations of his rather eccentric archery teacher's instruction. Herrigel's instructor, Awa Kenzo, was very atypical in connecting the art of shooting with Zen Buddhism.
Also: the translation (if it is a translation) of my copy is poor. For example, the word 'fired' is used incorrectly for a bow. You 'fire' a cannon or gun (as in, 'set fire to the fuse'). You 'shoot' a bow. There are quite a few of these errors in the text I had.

Don’t go into it thinking it’s going to be a novel. After finishing this book, I had to take a second to comprehend what I just read. I sat there thinking about how this book relates to my own life, my own experiences, how I handle situations, what I want to do, what direction I want to go. For me, it was a great source of self reflection and it truly depends on your own interpretation. It was thought provoking with the beautiful metaphors. I would highly recommend!

Το τελευταίο πόνημα του Coelho δεν με κέρδισε δυστυχώς, δεν συμπυκνώνει ηθικά διδάγματα όπως ''Το εγχειρίδιο του πολεμιστή του φωτός''. Μας προτρέπει να προσεγγίσουμε τη ζωή και τις δυσκολίες της όπως ένας τοξοβόλος αλλά επαναλαμβάνεται μετά από ένα σημείο. Οι έννοιες τόξο, βέλος, στόχος αναλύονται και συγχέονται χωρίς να προσφέρουν κάποια ψυχική αρμονία. Όμως οφείλω να διατυμπανίσω πόσο εξαίσια ήταν η εικονογράφηση του Γιάννη Βαλυράκη.

I think I would describe this more as an inspirational meditation than a novel. I finished it in under an hour and appreciated the basic wisdom of the extended metaphor, but it’s not a novel.
