They were both scheming to get out of the marriage before the date was even set.
In the rugged Highlands, a proud warrior is about to fall. Highlander Brus MacLeod doesn’t want the betrothal forced upon him, and he certainly does not intend to take the woman as his wife, no matter who commands it. He has every intention of driving the unexpectedly feisty lass to break the marriage contract and has no plans to let her into his head, bed, or heart.
But then the funny, warm slip of a woman invades his home, his life, his soul, and he finds himself unable to forget her, even when she seems to have utterly forgotten him.
Julie Johnstone is a USA Today and #1 Amazon bestselling author. Scottish historical romance and Regency historical romance featuring highlanders and aristocrats are her love, and she enjoys creating both with a hefty dose of twists, plenty of heartstring tugs, and a guaranteed happily ever after.
Her books have been dubbed "fabulously entertaining and engaging," making readers cry, laugh, and swoon. Johnstone lives in Alabama with her very own lowlander husband, her two children - the heir and the spare, her snobby cat, and her perpetually happy dog.
In her spare time she enjoys way too much coffee balanced by super hot yoga, reading, and traveling.
The perfection of a brilliant Scottish Adventure and romance. This book ticks all the boxes, so much tension, chemistry and sword swinging. It was one of those that once you opened you couldn’t put down. Excellent writing too, I can’t fault it.
I adored the characters so manly in his case, I love and appreciate the way Julie wrote in Scottish accent, it makes the book even better. A strong and independent female character was great.
There’s nothing to fault here and everything to praise. Any lover of Scottish romance will be in heaven.
I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review
4.5 Stars Brus MacLeod & Sebille MacWilliams were secretly betrothed twelve years ago by their parents mainly so that the MacLeods could obtain a tract of land. Brus doesn't want the betrothal forced upon him, and he certainly does not intend to take Sebille as his wife, no matter who commands it. He has every intention of driving the unexpectedly feisty lass to break the marriage contract and has no plans to let her into his head, bed, or heart. She feels exactly the same & is only agreeing to spend time with Brus for her sister’s sake. Then Sebille runs away & Brus is determined to find her as he finds himself unable to forget her, even when she seems to have utterly forgotten him. This is the second book in the series & is very easily read on its own. Another well written engrossing read, which had an unusual turn of events. I loved both Brus & Sebille, he’s always thought that his father didn't value him so has trained harder in the lists than anyone else & will do anything for his clan but he does have a bit of a reputation with the ladies. Sebille hasn’t had a happy childhood & distrusts men as they only think of themselves but she is very protective of her sister. I loved how the pair clashed, sparks certainly flew whilst their attraction sizzled. The book takes place over two time frames a year separating them. Once I'd started the book I found it very hard to put down & was totally invested in the pairs journey to a HEA. One villain seemed to get away scot free & I would have liked Brus to have met her! My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Love this story and it was expertly told!! This author begins this story in the middle and slowly lets you in on this couple's history. Brus was determined to never marry but I'm thinking he mistook his need to protect her from him actually loving her.
Their journey begins in the middle where he saves her (ok, kidnaps her) marrying a nasty man. He had no idea how he'd go from there but his only need at the time was to remove her from potentially a very cruel man. They history unfolds little by little letting you into their lives. She has lost many of her memories but her heart is telling her to trust him.
(Somewhat spoiler, so read no further if you haven't read the story.) Loved this story, my only complaint.....we never know what happened to her sister. I kept waiting during the epilog for her to surprisingly appear, but she didn't. Perhaps we'll find out in the next book???
I was gifted with an ARC and wanted to post a review.
Brus MacLeod is a proud Highlander who doesn't want a betrothal forced upon him, and he doesn’t intend on taking the woman as his wife, no matter who commands it. He has a plan and that is to drive the feisty lass to break the marriage contract herself. He has no plans to let her into his head, bed, or heart.
But then Sebille invades not only his home, but his life, and his soul. He cant seem to forget her, even though it seems she has all but forgotten him.
Julie Johnstone is simply fantastic. This book has it all. From the moment I started reading until the very end this book ruled my life. All I wanted to do was keep reading. Ms. Johnstone gives such vivid descriptions that it's like you are watching every thing play out before your very eye's. Brus and Sebille were perfect for each other, they just had to take the time to find out what love was. If your in the mood for a romantic read that will leave you breathless, look no further you have found your book.
Scotland 1387 Bruce McLeod had six months to get the lass to break their engagement. He knew he could not so it was up to her! What he did not expect was "She wasn't the sort of lass that a man could not look away from... She was the sort that could stop a man's heart if the man was not careful."
Sebille did not want to be forced into this marriage but now her father was dead and her brother was not giving her any choice... he wanted her to get close to Bruce for other reasons... She could not help but remember how braw he was..
An Adventure that will keep you reading as fast as you can!! Love this author and her fabulous stories!
This is the second book in Julie Johnstone’s fabulous new series Of Mist and Mountains, although it features characters from the first book and her previous medieval series this can be read as a stand alone but I am certain you will want to read the others after you finish this one. Our hero is Brus, second son and brother to Royce, new laird of the MacLeod clan. He has always felt harshly judged by his father and never felt he’s been good enough, this has led him to not only train harder and longer to be the best warrior but also be a ladies man, a rogue. He is angered to find that his father has betrothed him to our heroine Sebille, sister to the new laird of the MacWilliams clan. Neither want this betrothal Brus, never wanting to be a prisoner to love and Sebille has always wanted a love match. Sebille has always been stronger than her father and brother have allowed her to be, she has had to keep her fiery nature contained, that is until Brus, he stirs her in a way she has never felt before and she is suddenly able to express her thoughts and show her true strength. There is also a plot to kill the Scottish king that Sebille’s brother uses her love of her sister and need to keep her safe against her in an attempt to manipulate her into aiding him. This leads to an accident leaving our pair separated for almost a year. When they next meet much has changed except how they feel about each other. There are many twists and turns making this such a fantastic read to say more would reveal too much and spoil it for the reader. I enjoyed the first book of the series, but this one I loved, I could not put it down. The characters have a realness and you want them to find their happy ever after, especially what they both have to go through. I highly recommend this to everyone, Julie really has outdone herself, it’s up there as one of her best books. I received and reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book and this is my honest opinions and review.
Highland Reckoning is book 2 in the Of Mist and Mountains series. Although it is book two it can be read as a stand alone, but I highly recommend reading the first book in the series Highland Hope. Many of the characters are featured in both books. I loved this medieval second chance romance. Brus and Sebille’s love story is breathtaking. Here’s one of my favorite quotes: “My mind only recalls bits and pieces of ye,” she said, the words ragged with her racing heart, “but my body…My body knows ye as if yer hand is my hand. Yer desires my desires. Yer pleasure my pleasure. Yer heartbeat my verra own. It feels as if ye left an imprint on my soul.” “Aye,” he said, his gaze turning like a storm as he leaned down and brought his face close to hers. “I did.” Bravo! This is a magnificently written story. I hope there will be more to come in this series.
Book #2 Of Mist and Mountains, Highland Reckoning series. This is definitely a 5 Star, well written story with amazing characters, great plot, and a great range of emotions and action. It’s always great to have the ability to listen to the audiobook narration if it’s well done, and this one is extremely well done! The characters seem to come alive and the reader feels as if they are actually in the story. I love this series! 😍
An intricately woven story. Strong characters caught up in intrigue and circumstances beyond their control. Deception and lies keep a wedge between this couple, add in amnesia, magic and treachery and you have a story that will have you riveted.
Worthwhile. The book has memory loss so it’s constantly back in time and then to the present. It was worth wile read but lacked steam. The one flashback of an intimate scene and the one that happened where VERY brief. Plot 6(1-10) steaminess 4.5(1-10)
One Is The Loneliest💔 Number ADULT Medieval🏰 Romance💕 and Road Trip Adventure🐎. Amnesia in the female character plays a very large role in this second chance romance💕 with abduction elements.

This is the second book in the Of Mists and Mountains Series which was I could not put down. I read in one setting as it was a total nail biter.I personally find any story involving Dunvegan castle and the MacLeod’s will always have a bit magic. After all if you are a lover of Scotland and it’s history you will know this is where the fairy flag lives even today! So I am always drawn to Macleod stories that surround Dunvegan castle in the Isle of Skye, Scotland. Furthermore, I love how this author connects true history and a fictional romance plus there is a lot bit of magic too. This is a wonderful story about a real castle and a clan that still occupies Dunvegan castle today.
This novel definitely swept me away in this story and the plotting was magnificent right from the start. Of course I was filled with so much empathy for the heroine, who was so powerful, brave, plus dealing with so much pain and suffering. Yet she would do anything to protect the people she loves! Seville was written beautifully and of course she had to put the egotistical player Brus MacLeod in his place too. Even Scottish rogue’s might make the best husbands too. I look forward to the next book in this spectacular series! You can read this as a stand alone book but I highly recommend to read Highland Hope too. It tells the story of Brus’s older brother Laird Royce MacLeod and Eve Sotherby, especially since both MacLeod brothers are in both books. Plus you can read their parents story in Julie Johstone’s previous series, Highlander Vows: Entangled Heart Series in “When a Laird Loves a Lady” plus their Aunts and Uncles who are all mentioned in this book too.
Of Mists and Mountains Series 1.Highland Hope 2. Highland Reconing
Disclaimer: I received a generous advance readers copy from the author for a fair and honest review. I voluntarily agreed to read, review and blog All words, ideas and thoughts are my own.
This is an okay Highlander romance, and a good addition to the "Of Mist and Mountains" series. It gets 3.5 stars from me, rounded down to 3 stars.
The books in this series can be read standalone, but I believe reading the "Highlander Vows: Entangled Hearts" series first, then this series, would make it more enjoyable. The characters from the Highlander Vows series are frequently mentioned/included in this book, and this series is a spin-off from it. The family/friend relationships are complex, so the reader might have a tough time understanding the characters without reading the Highlander Vows series first. I also think it would be a good idea to read this series in order, starting with Highland Hope.
I mostly liked Sebille, but thought she was too trusting of her stepbrother. He showed her in the beginning that he was cruel and uncaring, yet she still trusted him anyway. Then, after she lost her memory, she believed all the lies he told her -- even when she was given reason not to.
I also liked Brus, and felt bad for him that he had always felt his father wasn't proud of him. I was glad that was finally resolved in the book, even though Brus suffered a great deal before it was. I also thought it was really sad that his father was proud of him, but was so bad at showing his feelings that Brus didn't know it. I thought Brus' mother should have intervened in their relationship sooner than she did.
My rating system is below. 1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it. 2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws. 3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating. 4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one. 5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.
Also as always, my reviews are less of a traditional review and more of my notes to remind myself of things that I liked and didn't like about each book, because otherwise I will not remember.
It's so crazy to think of Iain, *IAIN MACLEOD* treating Brus like a "second son", or the "spare". I can't believe that Marion would even allow it. So wild.
Duncan had to return to his dad, the King, year after year for... punishment? Or be eliminated? That is so tragic. Even with him primed to be the villain, that is heartbreaking.
I *love* the time jump and Sabile's loss of memory. It moves the story and it makes it a mystery and I loveeeeed it.
I love when Witches are good people in these books. Esmea might be my new favorite. And, as always, I enjoy Yolanda. It's nice to see Fae and Witch working together.
Would the MacKenzie's hurt Esmea for helping Brus and Sabile?
Lanark, Cousin- which group of parents does he belong to? Was he the one sent to find Cecily?
I love Iain and Brus's reconciliation. THAT is the Iain I loved.
I don't feel like Duncan was a completely dark character, and I love that Yolanda didn't think him to be one either. For him to be tortured as he was. The way he tried to save Sabile... I do think that he loved her. I think that his time with his "dad" (the king) grew the darkness inside of him. And lets not pretend like his mother was a loving, doting, supportive parent either. I find his whole story line sad, and the only thing I can say about him losing his life, is at least he is free from his demons.
Royce's new wife- Abigail? Did she decide not to go by Eve? I thought she went by Eve...
I was expecting for Cecily to show up as part of Sabile's birthday celebration. Now I'm wondering if she will get her own story?
There are still characters from Engangled Hearts that I want to get their own story, like Thomas, but I am excited to read about Thor's story next.

INCREDIBLE!!! Highland Reckoning by Julie Johnstone is book 2 in the Of Mist and Mountains series and Oh what a series this is. Though in a series this book can be read as a standalone. Julie Johnstone is one of the best writers of today and this book did not disappoint. I have to say it is a bit of a sad story but full of action and adventure. The romance between Brus and Sebille just sizzled and I now have a new hero and his name is Brus. I found this story to be original, captivating, loving and it gave the real feel of the medieval era. Another perfect book by Julie. I am so looking forward to the next in this series. This story has a betrothed that is not wanted by either party, a plot to kill the king, an abused lady that has been whipped by her stepmother, a warrior and guard for the king that does not want love, falling for their fiancé, a misunderstanding, and accident that causes amnesia, knowing to many secrets, a horrible stepbrother, a loving family, protection, illness, feeling guilty, kidnapping, wanting their memory back, spells to cure, no protection from their father, wanting a father’s approval and a second chance at love. I could go on and on as this book has it all and it will keep you captive from page one to the very end. I am highly recommending you read this book. It is so very well written!!!
***This book was gifted to me and I am voluntarily reviewing.
Highlander Brus MacLeod will not be forced to marry. He and Sebille MacWilliams have secretly betrothed twelve years by their parents. He plans to get the fiery lass to break the marriage contract. What he doesn’t expect is to be quite so attracted to her, he just needs to keep to the plan and keep her out of his bed and his heart. Sebille feels exactly the same way she doesn’t want to marry him and after meeting him she runs away. Brus goes chasing after her when he realizes he can’t seem to forget him. The story starts with Brus’s needing to see Sebille one last time only to find she’s about to be married to another man. She was a duty he didn’t want, but she soon became the air he needed to survive. He kidnaps her to save her from a cruel husband and possible traitor, only to discover she has lost her memory. What a fun and captivating story where Brus can’t forget Sebille, but it seems she ran away from him and has totally forgotten him when she lost her memory. A story filled with treachery, betrayal and revenge. I have voluntarily read and reviewed the excellent book.
Brus and Sebille did not want to be wed; they did not want anything to do with each other, but they are caught in a web of intrigue. Their story is an adventurous tale filled with betrayal, blackmail, treacherous plots, and revenge. All kinds of sparks fly when these two meet. The only reason Sebille is part of her brother’s plot is to protect her sister. They do not mean to fall in love, but the chemistry is undeniable. Just as they work up the courage to share their feelings, something happens to cause Sebille to disappear. Why did she leave? Will Brus be able to find her? Can they find the path to happily ever after?
Highland Reckoning is a captivating story. Both the storyline and the characters are well-written and complex, and brought to life by Tim Campbell in his always first-rate narration. I love Brus and Sebille. I am glad they were able to see that they were perfect for each other. Not every HEA is easy and sweet, but they are all worth the work. Great read!
Sebille has 1 mission in life to protect her sister Cecily! Duncan is truly and evil twisted step brother bastard son of the King! Duncan is truly mad over the way he was treated by his father! He hatches a diabolical plan and uses Sebille to execute it! Brus had always lived in the belief he is lacking and will never measure up to his fathers expectations! When Sebille feelings become real she goes to Brus to tell him the truth! Believing he has betrayed her she flees into her brother Duncan arms and another twisted plot of his! Brus wants 1 more chance to see Sebille and hear from her own lips she will wed another of her own free will! When Brus realizes something is very wrong he kidnaps her and their wild adventures grow even wilder! If you want to laugh, cry and breathlessly turn the pages then then get ready to read an adventure so filled with Braw Highland heroes! This one definitely stays with you!!!
I am really enjoying this series, which are the first books I’ve read by this author. Her characters are well-developed, even the secondary ones. The plot is compelling and draws you in. However, and it’s a big however, I have a big negative with the books. Book 1 had an unresolved situation which I thought might be addressed in the 2nd book. Not so. In addition to that, it has left me with several questions regarding some of the events in this one. It’s made me angry, quite frankly. I invest in the stories I read and I want to know the outcomes. This one especially kind of just wrapped up, leaving many details hanging. That left me hanging. In my opinion if a writer takes the time and word space to introduce a subject, that subject should be followed through to its conclusion. I’m giving it 3-1/2 stars and I will read the third, final book in the series. Right now I have a sour taste in my mind. On a pleasant note, Timothy Campbell is terrific as the Audible narrator.
Very sweet story of Brus and Sebille. Brus is the second son and his brother Royce is the currently laird. Brus was betrothed to Sebille but he only recently found out and had a plan to make her break the betrothal so he wouldn’t have to marry her. She didn’t want to marry him either. Her brother Duncan was forcing her into a plot to kill the king and she wanted no part of it. Of course Brus and Sebille grow on each other and it appears all is well. Then the drama begins. Betrayal, abandonment, hurt, and lost memories make this a good story with strong characters. I really enjoyed the story but did not like it as much as the first book in the series.
The story of Brus and Sebille is so full of ups and down it is crazy. There is a horrific plot evolving around the two of them as well as an accident that creates havoc for Sebille. Her wicked brother wants nothing more than to use Sebille, his half sister, as a means to rid him of his father. ( Ohhhh and who his father is, well that would be a spoiler, soooooo nope no hints.) The situation between Sebille and Brus is like a game of he/she loves me, he/she loves me not. This story keeps you hooked wondering what is gonna happen next. Loved it!! Get the book!!
This book was amazing from the beginning. It definitely surpassed my expectations. The characters were very well-written. In the beginning I wasn't sure I would like Brus, but that quickly changed. I immediately liked Sebille. She was full of strength. Book one in the series was an excellent start and this book was equally as good. It can be read alone, but I highly recommend both books. Both are interesting and entertaining.
Julie Johnstone did not disappoint with this book, great read, couldn't put it down- loved how the chapters intertwined past to present showing pieces on how Brus and Seville met. Lots of mystery, deceit, memory loss and love on two people who did not want marriage. Love historical romance books with strong women who can hold their own can't wait for the next book.
I can always count on a great story from Julie Johnstone and this one did not disappoint. There was a lot of action and adventure in addition to the story of the hero and heroine. The layout of the story was different that the usual presentation and I really enjoyed how it unfolded. It was fun to revisit characters from the other series also. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series!
Brus MacLeod was pledged to a woman for land and he didn’t want her. He felt like he was never good enough for his dad and this was a big betrayal. Sebille MacWilliams had been betrayed by her dad and brother. She had lost her memory and struggled with her feelings for Brus.
I liked Brus and Sebille's story. She did get all her memories back and realized her brother had been lying to her all her life. Brus did get her back and did save her life. They did find her sister, but did not bring her back in the end. Will there be another book about Cecily? And also will Elina get her story since her fiancee came back after he had disappeared a year before?
I absolutely loved the characters and storyline so much. I loved Seville, Brus, and all of the MacLeod’s. I was hopeful at the end Cecily would have been there. I really loved reading the family’s stories. They are all wonderful. Now to find a new author to read. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
This story was very good, excellent characters and descriptions. There’s a plot that takes the lady Seville through good and bad times. Well written with so very few edits needed, that’s always refreshing too. Thanks Julie Johnstone for the adventure, love your books!
Treachery, deceit, betrayal, seduction, love and fae... This story has it all!
Wow , this author has a wonderful way of telling a story if you like flashbacks to get the backstory details! I loved the slight inclusion of fae magic as well as the memory loss to create the intrigue. Sebille and Brus' story of enduring love is a keeper!
I am not a fan of flashbacks when they don’t add anything. The story would have been so much better if it just went in chronological order. Also, what happened to her sister? That needed a resolution. I didn’t feel a great connection between the mc’s because it was so disjointed with the flashbacks.
