Katherine Anne "Katie" Couric is notable as an American journalist who became well-known as co-host of NBC's Today. In 2006, she made a highly publicized move from NBC to CBS, and on September 5, 2006 she became the first solo female anchor of the weekday evening news on one of the three traditional U.S. broadcast networks. She currently serves as the anchor and managing editor of the CBS Evening News, having replaced Bob Schieffer on September 5, 2006. Schieffer served as the interim anchor following the departure of long time anchor and managing editor Dan Rather on March 9, 2005.
If you are looking for an in-depth dive into the gossip and inner workings of news media, this book does not "go there". There are some revealing moments and some fun stories, but this is mostly a group of chronological essays about Katie's rise and life. As much as she wants to "go there" she never quite gets down and dirty. Her memories of her husband and his death are heart-wrenching, and she is honest about it all. This book is honest, but sort of glosses and dances around a lot of issues. Even while being successful and publically loved, Katie does reveal that the media (and the bosses) were not entirely helpful ( some were downright harmful) in her desire to deliver news over fluff. Try as she might, she seemingly was unable to garner the gravitas she desired. This is an easy read and is interesting. I don't recommend reading or skipping. If you have time and you like Katie, go for it. If you aren't particularly interested or don't care for Katie, this probably won't change your mind.
