Crescent Cove #9

Daddy Undercover

Rate this book
A baby in a basket left on a doorstep is such a clichè...

It’s also my life.

I carry a gun and a badge and help keep order in small town Crescent Cove.

What I don’t do?

Change diapers.

Sing songs about sharks.

Or...ask for help.

But my best friend, Gina Ramos, knows I’m in over my head. She’s the only one keeping me sane. And playing house with her is starting to feel way too real.

And get way too hot.

Because the biggest thing I don’t want to do?

Is to lose my best friend...or find out my little girl isn’t really mine.

Author’s note: This daddy isn't just undercover…he's clueless he has a baby! Daddy Undercover is a standalone romantic comedy with a happily-ever-after ending and no cliffhanger.

Spoilers ahead

This isn't going to be my typical review as I've ONLY got one major reason why this book broke my heart. Please note there are a lot of high reviews for this so don't let my rating stop you from giving this book a try, I myself generally enjoy this author's books.

****Right so the h/H have been best friends for years, he hooked up with OW while away at a convention and she got pregnant which he didn't know until she left the baby on his doorstep
*side note- I actually read this fully expecting that the child wouldn't have been the H's and they'd maybe adopt it because he of course had secret feelings for his best friend and would therefore NEVER have slept with another woman.....at least in my head and heart that's what I expected

All my issues with this story came from that ONE point ☝

1) He didn't take the h to the convention because he was afraid they'd have sex
2)He felt guilty at her finding out without knowing why he felt so guilty
*both points emphasize that there were feelings for the h there all along
3)the h was really hurt by the baby news, I teared up so many times during her pov
4) theh possibly can't have kids
5) from the very moment he called the h to help him with his child I hated his reaction, he relied on her way too heavily, just slotting her into the role of "mum" within the blink of an eye
6) the romance was soured by the fact that he seemed to love the ready made family he suddenly had. It's way too convenient he suddenly realised he'd loved the h all along when he's looking at her with his kid. You sir want a nanny and sex
7)even family and friends questioned whether he just wanted a babysitter or not
8)it isn't romantic to me that he hooked up with a woman who's named rhymed with the h's
**9)HE hooked up over a couple days with the OW, but while at home he'd warn other men away from the h. She's not dated or had sex in a very long while!
10)“Because it’s always been about you. Just you, Bee. I wish you knew that...... That is a mother Fucking lie dickwad!

*I've got a ton load of quotes I wanted to use but even now I'm teary eyed, I HATE that this is the way this h got her hea, it really disappointed me especially as she possibly can't have kids and they didn't even give her a miracle ending

Take one small bundle of joy left on a doorstep, one clueless man, and a woman who was born to mother but may not be able to and you have a heartwarming, engaging, and sexy holiday romance.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching by the book Sheriff Jared Brooks out of his element, figuring out how to deal with a situation he had no clue about, and admitting finally that his “best friend” Gina Ramos is more than a friend, not to mention his many, many screw ups throughout this book proving he is very human after all.

Gina Ramos is thrown for a loop when Jared presents her with a baby for a hook-up he had at a conference in NYC last year. While she knows she has no right to be jealous, angry, and sad, she is and has no idea what to do with all of that. One thing is for certain she can turn her back on the sweet precious Samantha or her clueless daddy.

This story was really quite complex because not only was Jared figuring out how to be a dad all while trying to keep it quiet from the town, he was making sure that the baby’s mother would not come back to claim his daughter, figuring out how to balance family life and his job, and his confusing feelings towards Gina. All the while Gina was happy to help with Samantha, but inside she was struggling with her own feelings of not being enough for any man especially Jared who was proving every day he was born to be a dad.

There was no doubt these two had a special friendship and that they both wanted more but had been afraid to move their relationship in that direction (hence Jared’s weekend fling), but they both were dealing with feelings they weren’t ready to face and Gina wasn’t ready to share the secret only she and her mother knew. I hurt for them, it was obvious Jared’s mother’s abandonment had made him closed off of the idea of a relationship and family and Gina’s medical condition had left her feeling like she wasn’t worthy of having a long term relationship. Even as the good friends they were, there was proof they both held their cards close to the vest and didn’t share some of their deepest fears and issues which I found to be a bit sad. They both made some mistakes, but they also learned to work through them together.

A hard won love story between best friends who finally figured out being more than friends had all kinds of benefits including the family they never thought they’d have, I loved Daddy Undercover.

When Jared needs her, Gina is there. She's been there for him through everything, and vice versa. But this one? A baby left on his doorstep? Hmm...this is a doozy. Moving in with him, helping him take care of his newly discovered baby, it's going to be hell on her heart because those more than friendly feelings she's long had for her best friend may not stay a secret any longer.

When it looks as if her dreams are coming true and Jared starts seeing her as more than his best friend, is it because she's convenient? Because she's taken so thoroughly to the role of savior to all his problems, because he has life planned out and she fills the empty role in his checklist? Will Jared need to cuff her to him to get her to understand just how he feels about her?

Crescent Cove is one exciting town! Jared and Gina are such a great couple, two friends who always felt more for each other but never revealed it. Of course Jared was also an oblivious guy, as guys tend to be...but when he fell, he fell hard, and Gina was perfect for him - really their chemistry was the kind only longtime friends have, where they know each other so well that they fit seamlessly into each other's lives. Throw in an adorable baby and you've got the perfect best friends to more love story.

Possible spoiler, maybe.

I tried to like this story, I truly tried. But, I would prefer to do dishes than read any more of those series.

Jared is the Sheriff, Gina is his BFF. You'd think that they would have their stuff together. Yeah, nope! They both have been secretly in love with each other for years, but neither is willing to make a move. So, during an out-of-town convention, Jared spends the weekend in another woman. Just before Thanksgiving, he receives his unexpected gift. In true male fashion, he calls his BFF to help handle the situation. Gina comes to the rescue! Instead of opening her mouth and talking to Jared about her feelings, she keeps her trap shut. Gina has some internal female problems and the chances of her being able to get pregnant, are extremely low.

The back and forth between them, leaves something to be desired. It all felt very juvenile to me. I wasn't impressed.

A nice story, but not factual concerning the baby: 2-3 month old babies cannot hold a bottle, sit up by themselves, start getting their first tooth, sit in a high chair, throw food, do not eat baby food until they are at least 6 months old, and do not eat "real" peas until they are 10 to 12 months old.
Another thing that bothered me is that the Sheriff has a big dog that he allows to jump on people, knock them over, stand on them, lick their & his baby's face, and it doesn't seem to bother any of his friends, family or his lover.

DADDY UNDERCOVER is the ninth instalment in Taryn Quinn’s (Cari Quinn and Taryn Elliott ) contemporary, adult CRESCENT COVE erotic, romance series focusing on the small town of Crescent Cove. This is thirty-four year old, Sheriff Jared Brooks, and twenty-four year old, diner waitress Regina ‘Gina’ Ramos’ story line. DADDY UNDERCOVER can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Jared and Gina) DADDY UNDERCOVER follows the best friends to lovers relationship between thirty-four year old, Sheriff Jared Brooks, and twenty-four year old, diner waitress Regina ‘Gina’ Ramos. Sheriff Jared Brooks is shocked to discover an abandoned baby on his door step but is even more ill-equipped to handle an infant without having any prior experience. Desperate for help, Jared calls in his best friend Gina Ramos, and Gina willingly yet reluctantly finds herself playing house with the man that calls to her heart but as Jared tries to keep secret a baby he believes to be his own child, small town gossip begins a betting pool as Gina and Jared are seen together at every opportunity. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Gina and Jared, and the potential fall-out as Gina believes Jared sees their friendship, and Gina’s growing love for the baby as an opportunity to provide permanent childcare.

The relationship between Jared and Gina is a friends to lovers relationship wherein neither one has crossed the line with each other into something more. Jared’s one-night stand, one year earlier, resulted in a child he knew nothing about but Jared lost his heart to Gina Ramos, a woman who struggles with the baby-boom explosion in Crescent Cove. As Gina and Jared’s relationship quickly turns into something more, Gina begins to withdraw when she sees nothing but potential heart break on the horizon. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful, energetic and familiar secondary and supporting characters including several of the previous story line couples as well as Gina’s sisters Erica, Frankie and Gabby, and their mother Bonnie, and police officer Christian.

DADDY UNDERCOVER is a story of secrets and surprises, family and friendships, relationships and love. The premise is inviting and lively ; the characters are flirty, dynamic and realistic; the romance is spicy and spirited.

This is book 9 in the Crescent Cove series and it can be read as a standalone although I recommend the previous books just because they are great reads! In this one we finally get Sheriff Jared Brooks and Gina Ramos's story! Jared comes home from work and finds a baby on his doorstep. What is he supposed to do with a baby? He doesn't know anything about babies! So of course, he calls his best friend Gina for help. Watching her with what could be his daughter sparks something in him that he was not expecting. But it also makes him realize what could be his if he would just step up. Gina knows that Jared doesn't see her as anything more than a friend. So in order to keep him in her life, she accepts what she can't change. But finding out that he was with someone else hurts more than she thought it would. But when things start spinning out of her control, and he starts talking about them being a family-she knows that she will have to step away. That she will to tell him her secret when she hasn't told anyone but her mother. And that she will lose it all because of it.

I really liked this one! I have been impatiently waiting for their story and I definitely enjoyed most of it! Gina has this snarky attitude that I absolutely adore! Jared tends to be uptight and follows all the rules, so he needs her in his life! My only drawback, I felt like the secret she was keeping was blown out of proportion. Although I do get how that could affect how you think of yourself, she always came of as confident and this kinda threw me. But other that, I loved everything else about it!! Never a dull moment in the cove! Although now I think I need to know more about the deputy!

This book was sent to me by the authors for an honest review. Gina and Jared are the next couple up in the baby-making town of Crescent Cove. However, there is a twist to their story that makes them different from all the other couples in town. Jared is the town sheriff who comes home one evening to find a baby on his doorstep. He panics and calls his best friend Gina for help. She goes to help him but feels betrayed. Even though they have never been a couple, she has always had a crush on him. Meanwhile, Jared doesn't want anyone to know he has a kid because he is still in shock to find out he is a daddy. With Gina helping him, he starts to get into the hang of being a dad. He also gives into his feelings and realizes that he loves her and probably always has. When things start to get really serious between them, Gina starts to freak. She tries to push him away because she is afraid of what he will do if he finds out her secret. Sami and Sadie are both adorable and the chemistry between Gina and Jared is crazy hot. The ending left me wondering and hoping that things worked out for Gina. Can't wait for the next book to come out.

Seriously! Could this town get any better? Now a baby has shown up on Jared's doorstep! Jared, the town sheriff who really has no clue what he is doing with a baby. So who does he call? His best friend, of course, and Gina comes to the rescue. Will this baby and all the playing house turn the tables and turn real? Of course it will! This is Crescent Cove where all things romance happen and friends turn into lovers and happy ever after saves the day. This one made my heart happy. This one, as can all the books in this series, is a standalone, but really this is a great series so I recommend going back and getting them all if you haven't read them.

The couple: Jared and Gina

Romance trope: secret baby
Series: Crescent Cove
Length: 304 pages

Plot: Jared, the uptight police chief of Crescent Cove, is shocked when he finds an abandoned baby on his doorstep, but it turns out it is his and there's nobody he trusts to help him except his best friend Gina. Of course the fact that each of them has secret feelings for the other might just come into play.

Commentary: It seems unnormally cruel to have a heroine who cannot have children even though she wants them, in a town known for people getting pregnant, with a hero who has a surprise baby he got because he had a fling with another woman. Yikes. Just to be clear, they weren't together when he had the fling, but we're supposed to believe that he always wanted her (the heroine). So yea, she gets to raise his fling baby while not able to have babies of her own.
That's just so sad.
And maybe (as the note at the end of the book indicated) there will be a miracle, because this is Crescent Cove, after all, but the whole 300 pages of this story are just a big pile of sadness with a clueless hero.

OMG, I LOVE This story. It was fun, at some points LOL and I want more of it. Gina and Jared (the sheriff of Cresent Cove). Gina and Jared have been best friends for so long. They were always together when they weren't working. But they never voiced that they loved each other for a lon g time. But now a new addition has been introduced and everything has changed.

I received an ARC from the author to read and give an honest review.

I really enjoy books written by Cari Quinn and Taryn Elliot. No spoilers, I just want to say how much I enjoyed reading about these two people and their lives. It was an emotional book without the feeling that they were just pouring lemon juice on an open wound, like some authors do with emotional issues/topics in books. I really like it and highly recommend the whole series.
I was given an ARC for an honest review.

Okay

It's been a while since I've read anything in this series, and maybe because of that, this book felt incomplete as far as background information and side characters, who are plentiful but somehow we're supposed to know all of them. A lot of putting on the gas and then hitting the brakes, and cluelessness on Brooks' part about how he was treating Gina. And please, I slept with someone because her name rhymed with yours? Really?

This... this is a trope that I don't particularly care for. So, I probably started off on the back foot with it. It just didn't work for me. Didn't hate it... but it was just OK... for me.

The characters were OK, but I do feel that in the earlier books we knew the H&h a lot more. In the latter ones... not so much.

I think the one sticking point for me was when he said that if he had taken her to New York for the weekend they would've ended up having sex... instead he slept with some random... for the whole weekend. Sighs. Just not nice... just a little icky.

Small town, best friends to lovers.

Gina is twenty-four and works at the Crescent Cove diner.

Jared is the local Sheriff, at thirty-three, nine years her senior.

Fast friends, he literally arrives home to find an abandoned baby on his porch and a note from a sexual encounter he had a year ago. The first person he rings is Gina to the rescue.

Arriving at the scene, she’s shocked into silence at the sight of a baby. He didn’t owe her full disclosure. Yet she feels hurt and betrayed believing they confided almost everything to each other, but clearly, that was not the case and she’d have to come to terms with her baby-making best friend.
Maybe by the time Samantha turned eighteen.

Away at a convention, he spent two days with a stranger.
“Did she leave you high and dry?”
“No. It wasn’t like that. It was honestly nothing but two nights in a hotel room. We didn’t make plans to connect afterward because we were blowing off steam. That’s all.”
“While you were blowing, did your hand slip on the latex?”
“My hand never slips, Bee.”
“Then what happened?”
“I don’t know. She said she was on the Pill too”.

We are to assume, two strangers exercising unprotected sex and then they also engage in unprotected sex with him. Anyone thought about possibly having a health check as Trina and himself were strangers???

He was with the mother (Trina rhymed with Gina) for a couple of days last December. She doesn’t have room to cast judgement, it’s not his fault he made her think inappropriate thoughts about him sometimes. He didn’t actively work at being enticing. Then she remembered that he’d slept with some woman last winter, because he couldn’t afford the temptation of her being with him. Right or wrong, she’s hurt. That she didn’t have any right to be didn’t kill her feelings.

She temporarily spends time in his home as they (she) share baby-duty. Jared plays at avoidance, until he’s forced to admit that he has a baby.

I liked that despite his constant referencing baby Samantha as theirs, Gina repeatedly corrected him pointing out it’s his baby not theirs. He’d been tight-lipped about the situation, relying on her and oftentimes shirking his responsibilities assuming she would care for his baby. They couldn’t continue playing house as if their situation was normal.

She’d assumed the sex dreams were strictly on her part, but with the belated conclusion she’d reached about him stealing her knickers (claiming he sneezed into them).

Perhaps people kept drawing conclusions about them because the two circled each other, without ever admitting their feelings.
One she couldn’t see.
Or simply couldn’t admit to, since he’d made a baby with someone else, and she felt like he’d cheated on her.
It didn’t make sense. Yet she couldn’t seem to convince herself of that fact.

The description attributed to Samantha at two months old, is unrealistic.
“The kid almost always reached for her first thing. Her fierce expression when one of us corrected her for patting the dog too hard. Not that she could hurt Sadie, but we tried to set her on the right path”.
A baby at two months is unable to pat a dog. Their motor skills are not developed at that age.

He eventually has a DNA test proving it’s his baby and finalises the paperwork for the legal transfer of parental rights.

***Mobiles in bras***
It is well documented that carrying a mobile on your body (i.e. pocket or tucked in a bra) puts you at risk from harmful mobile radiation leading to infertility and a higher incidence of birth defects.

For women especially, carrying a mobile phone in the bra or bra strap has been linked with the development of breast cancer.

WHO (World Health Organisation) has classified mobile phones (and any wireless devices that use microwaves to communicate) as a group 2B risk − which means that they are “possibly carcinogenic to humans.” Many experts believe evidence is already strong enough to classify mobile phones as definite cancer causers.

Environmental Health Trust facilitates that carrying a mobile phone on your body (i.e. pocket or tucked in a bra) puts you at risk from harmful mobile phone radiation leading to infertility and a higher incidence of birth defects.

It’s the beginning of the Christmas season for the tourists that had come through Crescent Cove. The Rusty Spoon is one of the staples. Not only did the townspeople expect it to be, they knew if Mitch Cooper still had one breath left in his body, but the repeat tourists did, too. They had put up, Christmas decorations already, it's all about Christmas, but don’t let anyone complain they aced out Thanksgiving. They did add just a few to say they did.

When Regina (Gina) Ramos started waitressing at the diner, she figured it would be good. Until she found something more permanent. It was a way for her to earn extra money. Five years passed, and she is still there. If you tried to give her an office job, she would get major hives. Her skin can’t breathe without the bacon, and grease in her pores. Inside joke read to see the two meanings. The diner gave her a direct line to all the 411 in the Cove. It also gave her the hours and freedom to play with side projects over the years. She also got to bartend at her sister’s bar.

Cash was not a problem for her. She had simple tastes, and a simple life small things made her happy. What can I say her family is a crazy hoot, it’s big, and a big influence in her life. At any given time, her family would pop in, and of course, that day for her do. Her mom, Bonnie, and her eldest sister Erica stop by. Erica’s baby was due soon, and her mom had her out shopping for baby furniture. However, Erica was starving, and their mother had a natural ability to nag about, well everything, but about her food choices.

But, today is not the day to mess with Erica about food choices. This was Gina’s time to shine. She made her the special off-the-menu items her sister loves, especially now during her pregnancy. The entire diner scene made me laugh, with the whole rolling of their eye, but putting on their sunglasses, first. I could totally relate. The baby shower for Erica was soon. Lunch was over and the two were leaving so Gina could go back to work. Her mom said Jared (Chief) Brooks is training Christian to cover dispatch.

For when her mom is out with her sister, during maternity. Gina says she will send over cookies. After her lunch visit, she gets a call, from her BFF Jared. He is in a panic and pleads, that he needs her help now. She asked is this a real 911, or is it one you can wait till she gets off work, what type of emergency? He said after work, but he pleaded with her that he absolutely needed her. But, in her wildest dreams, she never thought what awaited her would be the biggest betrayal that could ever become a couple.

On this night for them, it meant romantic or friendship. But, the most important piece of evidence this officer, chose never to notice was that his best friend had a massive, crush on him. He had even been dreading telling, Gina when she got there. It was what got him to the point he was in, of having a baby. Because he had only ever considered them just friends. This major bump in the road, would either make or break them. And, that night alone tested every factor and nerve to its max.

I feel he took advantage of her, and her kind heart, to get what he needed. Free babysitting, not having to tell anyone, and someone to teach him how to be a parent. Then, he could kick her loose if it didn’t feel right, or he didn’t get anything in return. But, the betrayal, devastation, anger, disgust, and distrust he saw flash right before his eyes. When Gina saw his two-month-old daughter for the first time, she was left on his doorstep in the dead of winter unattended, in inadequate clothing for him to find with a note.

Saying she is his. Fear of losing Gina gripped him, like nothing ever before, he had screwed up.

Gina Ramos is a waitress at the Rusty Spoon in Crescent Cove, NY. Her best friend is Sheriff Jared Brooks. Right in the middle of her busy shift at the Rusty Spoon she gets a call from Jared asking her to come to his house ASAP. But he wouldn't tell her why he so desperately needed her. Gina got to Jared's at quickly as she could. After all best friends always have each other's back. What she found at Jared's was a real shock. Jared needed her help alright - with his two-month-old baby daughter who seemed to have appeared from out of thin air as far as Gina knew. This would take some explaining. The baby was adorable but since Gina had fallen in love with Jared the appearance of his offspring really was hurtful. Sure she didn't tell Jared how she felt. She didn't want to ruin their friendship if he didn't love her back. So where do they go from here?

As the sheriff of Crescent City Jared Brooks felt he was equipped to handle anything and everything. Until he finds a baby in a basket left at his front door. Seems that weekend fling he had at the law enforcement conference in New York bore fruit. He would never have guessed that the woman he slept with would abandon their baby on his doorstep. So here he is an instant father to two-month-old Samantha Mae. He knows nothing about taking care of a baby. Good thing his best friend Gina Ramos is willing to step in and help with Sami. Oh man! Gina is a natural! She's the perfect mother for Sami and the perfect woman for him. Why did it take him so long to realize he was in love with Gina?

Daddy Undercover by Taryn Quinn is the ninth book in her Crescent Cove series. Gina and Jared's story is a delightful friends to lovers tale. The author brings their personalities to life with entertaining dialogue, perfect family moments, sweet scenes and some super hot sex scenes. This storyline flowed smoothly and kept me quite entertained. The secondary characters which include family members kept the fun going. I liked the instant protectiveness Jared's Golden Retriever Sadie felt toward baby Sami. Typical for the breed. This was a really fun read.

This is a story of 2 best friends that have unrequited feelings for each other. Things begin to heat up when the town’s sheriff, Jared Brooks out of town indiscretion turns up on a cold winter day on his doorstep in a baby carrier. Upon seeing the baby, he feels so helpless and overwhelmed with what to do that he immediately calls on Gina (Bee) Ramos, his best friend to come and help him. As Gina and Jared work together to take care of two-month-old baby Samantha, a family bond forms between the three of them. Then Jared, also called Brooks decides not to tell family and friends about his little bundle unless forced to do so because of the town gossip reaches Gina’s family.
Jared stumbles in the romance department but begins to catch on once Gina takes the initiative. The buildup of heated scenes throughout the story begins with banked embers that burst into red hot flames at the end.
There are hilarious laugh out loud scenes like the one where the deputy stopped to give a citation at a local parking spot when he spots a certain jeep with very steamed up windows. There are emotionally laden scenes where both Gina and Jared must make important decisions that will impact not just each other, but baby Samantha. Gina Ramos is sister to Erika in Fireman’s Daddy. Bonnie, their interfering, Spanish speaking mother is the Police dispatcher for Crescent Cove. So much fun to read in one sitting. I literally refused to do anything in the house until I finished reading Undercover Daddy. Taryn Quinn are masterful story tellers by weaving romance, sigh: sexy hot scenes with lol humor. Undercover Daddy contains all the magic of drawing one into the book that the reader never wants the story to end once the last chapter was read. Accolades for another spectacular read! You can not go wrong with the Crescent Cove series where romance combine with piping hot coupes that hmmm- often end up with unexpected pregnancies.
