Born into a Persian family in Dashti in Bushehr Province, Iran on 31 March 1897. Ali Dashti received a traditional religious education. He studied Islamic theology, history, Arabic and Persian grammar, and classical literature in madrasas in Karbala and Najaf (both in Iraq). He returned to Iran in 1918 and lived in Shiraz, Isfahan, and finally in Tehran, where he became involved in politics of the day.
Rather than becoming a cleric, he became a journalist and published a newspaper (Shafaq-e Sorkh) in Tehran from 1922 to 1935. He was a member of Majlis at various times between 1928 and 1946.
His criticism of allowing the Tudeh party into the cabinet and concessions to the Soviets landed him in prison in 1946. He was appointed a Senator in 1954 until the Islamic revolution in 1979.
An Iranian newspaper reported his death in 1982.

هین کژ و راست میروی باز چه خوردهای بگو
مست و خراب میروی خانه به خانه کو به کو
با کی حریف بودهای بوسه ز کی ربودهای
زلف که را گشودهای حلقه به حلقه مو به مو
راست بگو به جان تو ای دل و جانم آن تو
ای دل همچو شیشهام خورده میت کدو کدو
راست بگو نهان مکن پشت به عاشقان مکن
چشمه کجاست تا که من آب کشم سبو سبو

در کتاب سیری در دیوان شمس علی دشتی نکته بسیار مهم بررسی تفاوتهای بزرگ کلیات شمس و مثنوی است. مولوی در مثنوی یک عارف متشرع است که از قرآن و حدیث دم می زند و در دیوان شمس یک عاشق تمام عیار که همه ی احساس و ادراک خود را از آنچه که یافته است در دریای مواج موسیقی جاری می کند کتاب نمونه های جالبی از غزلیات کلیدی دیوان شمس را به خواننده نشان می دهد و من از این بخش کتاب بیشتر لذت بردم: تا تو حریف من شدی ای مه دلستان من همچو چراغ می جهد نور دل از زبان من…
