This was such a neat concept! A soccer (football) player FMC who is big into STEM and who also hates American football players due to her deadbeat dad, ends up being recruited by the captain and quarterback of her college’s football team to be their kicker. Now why would she ditch the women’s soccer team to go play on the men’s football team? Simple, a full athletic scholarship, which she desperately needs.
Cue the slow burn as a secret, forbidden romance begins to form between her and the quarterback, despite her deep-rooted dislike of football players. To make it even messier, the team rules are very clear: no dating within the team.
The characters were well built and had enough background and family support/issues to give them solid definition. I really enjoyed that although they’re only around 21, they’re portrayed as level-headed and mature. They’re still human, so problems arise, but overall it was refreshing to see young characters making fairly grounded choices. That said, the side characters fell a little flat for me. I would’ve loved more substance there, especially more page time with her mother, who felt like such an important figure in her life.
This story leans heavily into the sports side of things and the relationships that exist within the college football world. There aren’t many scenes outside of that setting, aside from the STEM project and competition she’s working on.
Another issue, though, was the “daddy issues” on both sides. I needed more angst and more emotional payoff. These issues clearly shaped who they are, but they felt a little too lightly touched on for how impactful they were meant to be.
All in all, this was a cute, easy story to read and enjoy.
