Waverly Wildcats #0.5

Holding Harper

Rate this book
#PrinceCharmingFallsHard

I know what you’re thinking, but trust me, there’s nothing cute about that hashtag. Not when Prince Charming is Waverly University’s starting kicker and 'falls hard' is code for 'breaks leg in three places.' Now the Wildcats’ shot at a national title is on the line, and the fans are out for blood.

Me? I'm just trying to get through nursing school and graduate on time. No one knows I was responsible for Chase Spellman’s accident, and I plan to keep it that way.

Which might be easier said than done since my new patient is the smooth-talking, sexy-as-sin Prince Charming himself…

Jennifer Bonds is the USA Today bestselling author of sizzling contemporary romance with sassy heroines, sexy alphas, and a whole lot of mischief. She’s a sucker for enemies-to-lovers stories, laugh-out-loud banter, and over-the-top grand gestures. Jennifer lives in Pennsylvania, where her overactive imagination and weakness for reality TV keep life interesting. She's lucky enough to live with her own real-life hero, two adorable (and sometimes crazy) children, and one rambunctious K9. Loves Buffy, Mexican food, a solid Netflix binge, the Winchester brothers, cupcakes, and all things zombie. Sings off-key.

RATING: 3.5/4 stars to Holding Harper! ★ ★ ★ ★

➜ Football player
➜ Nursing student
➜ College Romance
➜ Injured Sportsman
➜ Bed-bound pursuit
➜ Pro-relationship pairing

A novella comes into play when a full length read becomes not the demand for the moment. I love indulging rather effortlessly in a creative style designed for an ephemeral reading experience. After completing Holding Harper, and fully enjoying this fun, flirtatious and charming read, I had to ask myself why I hadn't read a Jennifer Bonds romance novel antecedent to this. Time is indeed of the essence, and the essence of my current desire demands the hero potential of a male love interest that Chase Spellman succeeded in the very best way. All that to say, if I had known this would be the sweet and wholesome delight that it was, I would have picked up a Jennifer Bonds book long ago. This novella opens with nursing student, Harper Payne, as she accompanies her best friend on a reluctant trip to a college party. It's their senior year at Waverly, and just a few days short of a new semester and all of the academic demands that await her as a nurse in training, she's participant to the agenda of her best friend. Her only stipulation that she remain unnoticed, and a red wig take care of that need to great effect. It's there that she meets student athlete, Chase Spellman. And in spite of a very comely immediate attraction with a guy quite clearly cut above the rest, knowing what her forthcoming curriculum requirements and workload will demand of her, Harper's determined to avoid further frivolities. And Chase seems entirely designed to disturb Harper's scholastic aspiration.

But a missing shoe, an act of pride and a fight with gravity later and all plans for potential romance (and more) fall as fast as Waverly's star kicker does when he tries to help a lady in frustration. A very Injured Chase now looks forward to the disappointment of a benched season. Having had to withdraw from the semester due to his current state of compromised mobility, two months off of his feet is going to be a challenge for a student sportsman who is no longer able to compete in the running for a national championship with his team. Summer break may have ended in disaster but that's apparently not all she wrote for this twosome. Chase is about to be presented with a second chance, only he doesn't know it yet. He may be benched, but he's not afraid to make a difference kind of play. Earning her hours in clinical placement, Harper's very familiar with the fact that there's no rest for the overbusied student. But when she comes face to face with Chase's familiar face, now a patient in her care, the severe-looking leg brace wrapped around his leg only has her guilt growing in size. And when Chase shows no signs of recognition and every sign of attraction, Harper plays the part of a student nurse entrusted with his care, and not the interested girl who lost her opportunity with him after a disastrous dare, fretting over her part played in Chase's life-halting injury. With every waking minute of her study schedule and her placement taking up her life, and under the scrutiny of a curt supervisor, she's already in full demand. But it doesn't stop her from feeling responsible for Chase's condition. Chase, on the other hand, has every reason to pursue the attractive nurse who's partly responsible for his duty of care with unveiled interest.

For its shortness, Holding Harper's storyline is well depicted, well-written and very easy to read. The story supports a believable Integration of academic pressure and collegiate obligation in its short span through Harper. Additionally, the protagonists were more than likeable. Of course, as short as it is, the story won't have the most explorative coverage, and that's to be expected, but the characterisation of both Harper and Chase boasts the effort of a storyline that promoted instant like for me. For readers who enjoy a sweet, flirty, easygoing and playful people person in a hero, you'll love Chase Spellman as a pursuant who is wholly pro-relationship, and reveals as much in a pursuit unhindered by his current handicap. Harper, on the other hand, has convinced herself that nothing can come of a romantic relationship, certain that the truth could threaten any kind of a positive outcome. She's so busy concerned with the impossibilities, she doesn't stop to see the possibility. Until it might be too late, that is. As a romance division, collegiate romance isn't a regular selection for me, excusing my earlier reading choices. I often abstain more than I indulge, and that hesitation is derivative to the unappealing lifestyle representation of college goers, unrelatable and sophomoric character profiles and unsatisfying relationship representation. I have a soft spot for functional, emotionally engaging and lovable male love interests for that reason. That being said, I'd be much more amenable to picking up a college romance if it reads like Holding Harper and features protagonists like these two; with good character chemistry and relatable personalities, the likes of which both Chase and Harper exhibited throughout. This endearing standalone collegiate novella previews promising content from Jennifer Bonds. An Inception to the Waverly Wildcats series as a Bonds beginner for me, it is all the more endearing as it paints a picture of a sportsman out of commission, one who refuses to give up without a bed-bound fight.

Content Warning/Listing: some swearing and a bedroom scene near to the end of the story (most are referred to and off page). Adult content.

Holding Harper was adorable and funny. Harper (h) and Chase (H) meet at a party and the start to sparks fly, but then Chase gets injured while trying to help her, causing him to have to put football and college on hold for a semester. The story is written in first person, dual POV. No ow/om drama, neither are virgins (it's been a while for both and H is an athlete who doesn't do casual hook-ups, score!), bc used.

Harper feels overwhelmingly guilty about what happened (and even though the rest of campus aren't sure who she is, there's hate flying around for the woman at the center of the injury). Then Chase ends up as her patient for her nursing degree clinical. Except he doesn't recognize her since she wore a wig at the party and he's fuzzy on events because of the injury. He's then re-intrigued with her as his nurse and we get all the cute chemistry and bonding. Chase admires Harper's brains as well as her beauty and Harper can't help falling for the good guy Chase is.

This was a light and sweet read that was low angst, despite Harper's fears of coming clean (which does happen before anything romantic happens between them). There's one steamy scene close to the end that turns up the heat, but most of the story is about the romance and taking the chance on a shot at love. Chase pursues the heck out of Harper and I loved it. The book ends on a HFN with I love you's being exchanged. The rest of the series follows other teammates of Chase's so I would expect we'll catch glimpses of these two. I would have loved for this to have been a bit longer, but it does make a great novella, Harper and Chase just made my heart happy.

Creo que nunca había disfrutado tanto un instalove.

Me gustó muchísimo la química entre Chase y Harper, ya quisiera yo que me coquetearan así. Las referencias a Harry Potter fueron lo más.🙂‍↕️

Harper wasn't supposed to be at that party, and she definitely shouldn't have jokingly asked someone to get her shoe down from the roof. She never expected a gorgeous athlete to actually do it... and then fall off.

Weeks later, Harper is still feeling guilty for her role in the triple leg break of Waverly Universities starting kicker, Chase Spellman. Thankfully, her costume hid her identity so no one realises that she's to blame. Which is lucky as she has bigger priorities to focus on, like passing the extended nursing prac from hell!

Imagine her horror when her newest patient is Chase himself, and thanks to a concussion he doesn't remember her. Will their initial spark rekindle? Or when Chase remembers, will he blame Harper for his actions?

This was a great prequel to the Waverly Wildcats series by Jennifer Bonds and I'm excited to continue reading! I haven't read many sports romances but I'll definitely read these.

Meeting Harper and Chase at the party, and hearing their dual POV, was essential to understanding how the fall occurred. I enjoyed hearing their own internal dialogue, then seeing how that was perceived by the other and how that played out in the story. Seeing Harper in her element at the hospital, and how Chase had to rely on his personality to win her over was sweet. Ultimately, a fairly closed door romance (part of me wishes there was a bonus 🔥 chapter as their chemistry was amazing) and a great short story.

3.5 rounded up

It was cute and wholesome, i just wish there had been more tension or affection before they became a couple, however its a novella and they spend it all in a hospital.

It was good and would recommend for a cute quick read.

Safety:
◇no om drama
◇no ow drama but the H doesn't wanna mention red because hes afraid mentioning ow will ruin things with harper. Little did he know red was harper
◇no cheating
◇no separation
◇idk if it was mentioned but i dont think either are virgins and H is not a manwhore
◇HEA a couple months into the future

This is a hot romance about a football star and a nursing student. The story flows well and the characters are interesting. The characters read a bit younger than I expected but it was still an enjoyable read.

Surprisingly I was satisfied with the length of this book. I wasn’t itching to have it be longer like I am for most novellas. I think because they really only see each other in one location if it was a full novel it would have dragged on a lot. Overall was very cute and I should have probably read this first but oh well I still appreciated it!

Lovely little story about Harper, a trainee nurse and Chase, a football player at the same university, who meet at a feat party that ends in disaster for him. That he doesn't remember her is a blessing for Harper. Or is it? Well drawn characters and a great scene for the development of this story.

This Novella is a very fun read. It’s a quick read and both Harper and Chase are great characters. I was definitely routing for them all through this book. I really liked the flirtiness that Chase had as a character and the innocents of Harper. I might start reading the whole series. <3

Quick and cute novella to kick off the Waverly Wildcats series.

4 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
While this was a short story, it was a delightful. This was my first Jennifer Bonds read, and won’t be the last.

Nursing student, Harper, is dragged to a party by her best friend, where she meets Chase, star kicker for their college football team. When things start to get messy, Chase gets injured trying to help Harper, and ends up being out for the season. When Harper shows up to her first day of clinicals, her first patient is Prince Charming himself, Chase. He doesn’t recognize her, which is great for her, because she feels terribly guilty for what happened. Will they be able to start over, or will he remember her and blame her for everything?

🚨SPOILER ALERT - Proceed with Caution🚨
This sports romance was such a fun and light read that I couldn’t put down. I loved getting both MCs POV, it really help explain how the fall happened. And I really enjoyed getting to see their own internal thoughts and how they played out in the overall story. The only downside for me wast that like most novellas (especially prequels) I was left wanting more… so is that it really a downside?

🩷Harper & Chase The chemistry between these two was instant and undeniable. Harper is a smart and confident woman, who dishes out the banter just as well as she takes it. Chase is totally smitten with harper from the moment he first saw her, and really had to turn on his best flirting skills, because with his injury he would have to win her over on his personality alone. And let me tell you this guy has there personality of a horny golden retriever. And even as much as Harper tried to resist him, she couldn’t help but be drawn to him when their time was almost ran out. So darn cute.

❤️‍🔥 2/5 We do get a little sprinkling of spice, but not right away. While this was short, it was indeed a slowburn

Overall this was a good story. It was a well written, well paced novella with a fun storyline, playful banter, great chemistry, and a happy ending. It was a great introduction to this series, and I can't wait to check out the rest!

**Each book in the series is a standalone, but there are cameos from other main characters in each book.**

What a great introduction to the Waverly Wildcats series. This is a short novella so we don't get too much information about the football team or even their classes as this takes place over a 2 week period right before school starts.
We have senior Chase Spellman, the kicker for the football team, and Harper Payne, a senior nursing student. They meet at a frat party right before the start of the new semester. Chase is a few days away from starting football training camp and Harper is trying to catch up with her clinical work for her degree. They meet at a party and he is left smitten by her and Harper is trying not to get distracted this year. Well, one thing leads to another and Chase ends up breaking his leg badly. His college football career is put on hold, as well as his academic ambition because his scholarship is dependent on him playing.
Harper and Chase meet again in the hospital, where Chase is a patient and Harper is his nurse-in-training. Chase is still crushing hard on Harper, only he doesn't know that Harper is the same girl from the party. Over the two weeks that he is in the hospital, Chase is bringing his flirting A-game and Harper is trying, and failing, not to fall for him. How do they end up together? Just read and find out.
This is a cute story that works great as an introduction to the series. I really hope we see more of Harper and Chase in the Waverly Wildcats series, although, I do doubt it as Chase is currently on leave from the team and school while he recovers from his injury.
Still, I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

Received an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.

It was a quick read. I enjoyed it. It was fun and reading some dumb things boys/ men do to get some attention from the opposite sex is hilarious. Chase wants to be the hero and show everyone up that he is just as good as them. Unfortunately gravity has other ideas. ‘Ariel’ just doesn’t want to be at a party she has goals and she has clinicals. A jock trying to be Spider-Man ends up in the hospital. Guess who the nurse is?! Yup it’s ‘Ariel’. It was a short cute story of two college kids falling in love. I enjoyed it. I needed a quick and easy story to read and this one didn’t disappoint at all. It was sweet how they kept trying to take care of the other. I would read again and recommend to others. I just wish it was a little longer and Chase gets back to school. I kinda feel like we left him hanging with school and his future.

I seriously love reading Jennifer Bond's couples!

The writing style in this series is super easy to read and the perfect beach/rainy day read.

Harper is a confident FMC who is a hard worker, a fantasy book nerd, and totally taken with Chase. Their meetings are so cute and their interactions gave me serious butterflies ♥
Chase is a funny, nerdy, feminist, sporty MMC who breaks his leg and is confined to a hospital bed for most of the book but that doesn't stop him for flirting and trying to convince Harper to give him extra attention.

This book had some of my favorites for a romance book:
HEA
Gushy epilogue
Grand gesture
Open door romance scene
Shameless flirting

In this Opposites Attract sport Romance, it was 112 pages of a good time. I was looking for a book that was feel-good and easy to read and something to get lost into, and this hit the spot to a T! It was an optimistic story that I was sad was only a Novella as I didn’t want it to end. This was the first book I have read by Jennifer Bonds but I am looking at getting the other books of the series so I can keep reading about them. It was so enjoyable; I can’t recommend it enough.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review honestly and voluntarily.

This is a great slow burn sports romance. Harper meets Chase at a fraternity party, and things just does't go as Chase has planned. On a drunken dare, he goes up to the roof to get Harper's shoe for her. Two other drunk frat boys threw it up there. After he falls and gets severely hurt, he becomes her patient at the hospital. She is a nursing student trying to get through her senior year. This is a great read with a happy ending.

I didn't even realize this book existed until after I finished Reid and Coop's books so going back to see what exactly led to Kennedy's inclusion on the team was a lot of fun! Chase and Harper had great chemistry, and her turmoil over keeping her secret was obvious. I enjoyed this quick read and backstory to the other 2 books!

A quick novella for an introduction to a series about a college football team (sports romance).
This one is a student nurse and the kicker for the team who meet at a party and things don’t get off on the right foot. At 200 pages it’s easily read on one sitting and there are brief introductions to a few of the upcoming characters.

Harper and Chase's story was short but playful and hella sweet, with a sprinkling of steam.

I loved the way Harper dished out the banter as easily as she took it.
I adored the way Chase didn't give up in his pursuit of the feisty, smart, and independent girl who had grabbed his attention.

I’m not sure why this series isn’t getting more hype. The characters are written wonderfully. There’s chemistry, spice and sports all wrapped up in this novella. This is the first novella in the series but it can be read out of order without being confusing - I know because I read book 2 first LOL
