Christie Gordon is the author of steamy, heartfelt gay romance novels that explore the emotional journey of men discovering themselves and finding love. It all started when she stumbled upon MM fanfiction by accident—and let's just say, it was love at first read. Inspired by the genre's mix of passion and complexity, Christie transitioned from reading about men in love to writing her own stories. After taking fiction writing classes at a local community college, she published her first MM romance novel in 2009 with a small press, and she’s never looked back. When she’s not writing, Christie watches boys-love dramas, creates digital art, or is serenaded by her snoring one-eyed rescue pug. A graduate of both Electrical Engineering (BS) and Business Administration (MBA), she spends her "day job" navigating the high-tech world, but her heart belongs to the characters who live in her books. Christie currently resides in the Phoenix metro area, though she’s also lived in California’s Bay Area and Minnesota (which probably explains her deep love of pumpkin spiced latte coffees and hockey). She’s also the proud mother of two young-adult sons who provide plenty of material for stories—usually in the form of chaotic shenanigans. But no matter what, Christie’s always up for a new adventure, whether it's on the page or in the real world.
I wanted to like this, based on the plot synopsis and positive reviews. But this was like reading a middle schooler’s first fanfic. The pacing was slow- nothing happened and I was just bored. The author needs a thesaurus because a character smirks on every page and it’s never a situation where a smirk is the appropriate facial expression. The romance itself was not believable and cringy to read. I did not buy their insta-love and did not root for them to get together. Honestly I assumed this was a teenager’s first published book and wasn’t going to leave a review at all. Then I read the author bio, saw that was not the case and she has no such excuse, and decided to save someone else from wasting their time on this.
Firstly let me say I’ve got this book from gay romance reviews And this is me leaving my honest review. Wow this book just made me smile instantly I like the main characters of this book Max is just out there he’s out and proud and was very lucky because his family was very excepting of who he was. When he sees a group of guys skating he is instantly attracted to one of them. And he finds himself going there most days to have lunch just to watch Skater boy. But when it looks like he has a boyfriend Max decided to take a step away. But before anything else can happen his mum rings to inform him he needs to get a roommate or find a job. So Max had to find a roommate. And who would come looking for a room no other than his eye candy skater boy. Tanner and Carter had been roommates and after a drunken kiss they were hooking up quite regularly and Tanner was starting to have true feelings for Carter but Carter decides he’s not ready to be out there. So Tanner decides to find somewhere else to live and he find Max. He instantly finds Max attractive but he doesn’t want to go down that roommate relationship route again. But what happens if they can’t stop their feelings for one another. These boys just stole my heart. I really liked Max and Tanner. Tanner has got so many insecurities bless his heart. He doesn’t feel like he can come out to his grandparents he’s been hurt in his past and Max is just so reassuring for him to tell him that what he says is true oh my, just thinking about it now, it’s just a wonderful read and I had to read it in one day. I can’t believe this is the first book that I read by Christie Gordon. I am so glad I have found her because I cannot wait for the second book in the series. Just amazing a fabulous book
Catching His Fall is book one in the Mesa Boys Series, an m/m romance. This book is a great start to the series. I got fully engrossed in their world and loved every minute of it. I couldn’t put it down. Max and Tanner are both so different but equally as great and absolutely perfect together. Tanner definitely has some issues and finds things hard. He’s been through a lot in his life and finds it hard to trust and always worries that people will leave. He’s been raised by his grandparents and feels he can never come out to them through fear of them rejecting him. Max is the total opposite and will openly show affection in public and open his heart for all to see. He loves and loves hard. There was a few times I really felt for Max. He’s opening his heart and soul and doesn’t always get what he deserves but he’s very patient with Tanner. Stan the Guinea pig!!! There was a lot of funny moments there. He’s a bit of a naughty Guinea pig but Tanner loves him fiercely! I don’t want to go into too much detail and spoil the book, but I would highly recommend reading this. As always with Christies books there’s steam, emotions, great storyline, and a real page turner. I love the Mesa Boys world already and can not wait for Carters book. A huge ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I loved this book. Emotional and entertaining. Enjoyable and steamy. Young innocent love. Max is obsessed with "Skater Boy". He eats his lunch at the skatepark in his Prius and watches him from afar. He does not go unnoticed and is referred to as "Prius Boy" by Tanner "Skater Boy". Tanner has been living with and sleeping with Carter. When Carter decides he doesn't want to be gay Tanner knows he needs to move out. Max needs to cut back on college expenses and decides on getting a roommate to share expenses. He places an ad and who should apply but Tanner. A dream come true for Max. Max recognizing him immediately but it takes awhile for Tanner. The attraction grows between the two and things heat up. Can Skater Boy and Prius Boy find their HEA? Lots of complications and surprises. I highly recommend.
Tanner and Max were perfect together! I feel in love with them, I was hooked as soon as I picked up the story and it left me smiling for days! Max is instantly attracted to Tanner as soon as he sees him, call him skater boy. Tanner has a complicated living situation, he’s fallen for his roommate but that roommate doesn’t want a relationship. He ends up at Max’s door. Loved Stan the guineapig!! Overall, a fantastic read. The story was really well written and engaging, the pacing flowed smoothly, highly recommend. I am voluntarily leaving a review form an advanced copy that I received. My reviews are solely based on my thoughts and opinions.
I totally fell in love with Max and Tanner. This is a roommates to lovers m/m romance.
Tanner needs a new roommate after a breakup with his old roommate. When he meets Max his new roommate he doesn’t know how they will keep their friendship only a friendship. Max has had a crush on Tanner since he first saw him skate and when he shows up as a new roommate option he knows he needs him in his life even if it’s just as a friend to start. But their friendship turns into so much more. And they will have to figure out how to be roommates and lovers. This book was a super sweet love story that I could put down once I started. Loved it.
This is a sweet, New Adult romance, with a lot of plot points that, to me, felt conveniently coincidental. Tanner’s relationships are all imploding at the same time and Max is totally there for him. Tanner’s not sure if he can trust anyone, but he’s leaning hard onto Max, only to feel like he might be dependent on a man he has begun to love, but who could leave him in a matter of weeks to return home when school ends. Tanner’s so unsettled emotionally, he tries to get space from everyone, and only ends up, predictably, hurting himself.
For me, I felt the plot pacing was kind of slow, with lots of mooning about and waiting for the next plot point to turn. I kept wanting to skip ahead to when Tanner’s life would settle into a new, happier normal. In contrast, the romance between Max and Tanner seems to move at warp speed, with barely a week passing before they are falling in love.
I'm all for an opposites attract situation and a forced proximity trope that's got a good amount of spice to it and this book delivered on that. The characters were engaging, the steam was adequate, the drama was reasonable, and the ending was sweet so overall this was a good book and worth the time. What held me back from a higher rating was the stilted writing at times. I couldn't get into the pacing or the level of detail that was often far too present and sometimes not enough. The flow felt off, just off enough to take me out of the storytelling a few too many times. This was my first from this author and because the outcome of the story and men were good I'd give them another read at some point in the future.
This was the first book I picked up by this author and I expect it to get only get better as the series goes on. This was a SPICY roommate romance. The MCs are in their early twenties, who seemed unable to keep their hands off one another or their thoughts out of the gutter. All the guys introduced had well-developed individual personalities which ended up keeping me most engaged in the story.
Max is equally a dedicated student and partner. He wanted to make sure if he was going to take focus away from school that it would be with someone who he could develop a long-term relationship with. He is a pining and cheesy character but it’s adorable ha. Tanner has the CUTEST freaking pet that I want to cuddle and watch movies on the couch with! Tanner himself falls fast and he falls hard. His indecisive and immature attitude frankly upset me at times and I did have to put the book down and come back. However, I believe that this speaks to being attached to the character and wanting him to make the “right” decision.
The way these two end up getting together and having some of their problems solved is a little convenient, although I think this story is meant to be light-hearted and provide some giggles so I’m not going to factor that into how I rate it, more of just a personal add on. I can’t wait to see how the rest of the guys get their happy ever after- I’ll be reading the rest of this series coming 2023 after the holiday season.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Max’s admiration of Tanner was sweet. Tanner, a little naive but very likable. Together these two build a romance, a life and a happy ever after without a whole lot of drama just mostly happiness. Tanner has a moment of truth with his past but that adds a little more flavor to the story and simply enhances the reading. A safe story of lovers to friends, new friends to lovers and a treat with a look at what’s to come. I voluntarily reviewed an arc of this book.
'Catching His Fall' (Mesa Boys, #1) by Christie Gordon
I really wanted to like this series, but only got as far as reading Books 1 & 2, and just had to stop.
Confession: I bought Book #1 because the model on the cover is the same model that's on another book (different author) that I loved...and, skater boys, lol!
I have no excuse for buying Book #2, except I wanted to find out what happened with Carter, even though he was quite the annoying little git!
Disappointed that this storyline seemed kinda disjointed, and (omg!) the dialogue was so lame! No...just no! Too much repetition with all the smirking and lip-lifting and so on. Reads like a teen fan-fick, a not-very-good one. (sorry)
Also, don't need a play-by-play on all the details, for example: "he walked over to the refrigerator, opened the door, took out a beer, took the cap off, walked over to the counter, set the cap down on the counter, raised the beer to his lips, took a drink, then swallowed." Seriously?
This was actually a scene out of the 1st book, but the same type of writing style permeates both books.
Does the author get NO feedback from anyone? Stretched out scenes like that, as well as a plethora of sex scenes, seems to me to be 'filler' because there's so much lacking in the storylines of these books.
Ugh! Please, someone, get this author a Thesaurus, a dictionary, a good editor, and some decent Beta readers! Oh and some 'Creative Writing' classes! The writing seems very immature, like a horny teen wrote it...(no disrespect to teens intended, horny or otherwise. FYI: I've read some really great storylines written by teens & YAs in Wattpad, etc)
(the writing style in both books annoyed me to the point of distraction)
Of course there are some obnoxious and dangerous characters in these books, to cause angst and chaos for our guys! I loved that most of the guys in this series are 'skater boys'; that was a new angle that I could relate to and appreciate!
Also, it was clear that the boys weren't all carbon copies of each other, as some of them were in college and some were working at diverse types of jobs. Plus their sexuality was also portrayed as diverse. It was cool that several of them didn't want to be labeled (ie, gay, bi, straight, pan, queer, etc), they just wanted to be free to love who they wanted to love. So that was cool!
Tanner & Max are the MC's of this first novel in the "Mesa Boys" series. Max is a senior at Arizona State majoring in sustainability and interning at Intel. Tanner is the Asst Mgr at Safeway Grocery and a top-notch skateboarder and owner of Stan the guinea pig. There are some interesting side characters who add to the drama, and I get the feeling we will see them pop back up as the series progresses.
The book kinda flatlined for me in the first half. There is ongoing drama regarding romances between room mates. The kind of stuff that happens between early-20's folks. As a mature reader, it really didn't grab me. Once the merry-go-round stops, Max and Tanner are sharing an apartment together and a romance breaks out between them.
About the 50% mark a mysterious woman named Cindy appears who nobody has any clues about. All of a sudden the plot takes off at this point and we have a good last half. The issue is family abandonment and the heavy toll it can take emotionally. Happily, things eventually get sorted and we have a nice HEA. I am sure Tanner & Max will cameo in future installments.
I enjoyed all the hijinks about Stan and the efforts the guys put into having a guinea pig as a pet. When they finally found Cartman and adopt him as a brother for Stan, that was a highlight. Also LOL'd how Christie wound in a plot bunny about reading MM romance novels written by women.
Definitely looking forward to installment #2 in the series - out summer of '22 according to the follow-up notes. Four stars for this one!
A hot skateboarder/guitarist who also has a killer set of pipes and a sexy guy wanting to save the planet and give the skateboarder all the love he's ever wanted? Sign me up! This was a great start to the series! We get Tanner, who is an assistant manager at a grocery store that he's been working at since he was 14, and Max, who is in his last semester to get his bachelors in sustainability before heading home to get a job in his field. Max has had a crush on Tanner for a while after his first glimpse of him skating at a skate park, so imagine his surprise when he needs a roommate, and Tanner shows up to answer his ad. Tanner had to move due to a conflict with his ex rommate/guy he was hooking up with and falling for, so he can't believe that when Max answers the door he's almost immediately attracted to him. After last time he isn't keen on making the same mistake he made before but what both men don't realize is that the attraction they feel moves into so much more than they ever thought or expected and after three dates they're almost certain they're all in. The obstacles and insecurities they go through together solidify that they were always meant to happen. This book was swoony and cheesy and oh so spicy! I'm super excited to get into the rest of the books and dive right in!
I didn't finish this book. I know a lot of people don't think it's fair to rate a book that one didn't read completely, but I disagree when the reason for the DNF is a decision based on poor quality rather than just failure to complete the reading.
Some of the things that were off-putting about this book: - this has to be the "whitest" world I've ever read. Everyone wears white t-shirts, every sheet is white, every sink, counter top, tile, cabinet, door, etc. - the way objects and spaces are described is awkward to the extreme. It's like the author wanted to increase the world count, and went back in after writing it and threw in a bunch of descriptors here and there. - early in the book, there were at least 5 instances where someone "stood up and pulled their shirt down over the top of their jeans." - the dialogue. It's just painful! And the inner monologuing is just as bad, if not worse. - the spicy scenes are so boring.
Those are just a few of the factors that made me DNF.
This is the first book I've read from this author. I wondered if it might be the first one they wrote, but after reading other reviews, it seems that is not the case. Based on some reviews, here other people who didn't like this book have like others by this author. Maybe I should give something else a try?
This is the first book I have read by this author and I am so excited to have found a new author to read! This was such a cute book and a really great read! My heart broke a little for Tanner. He had so many fears about being abandoned and that is such a real fear for people. This book was written very beautifully and it’s touched on very real subjects. Max was so sweet with Tanner. He gave his reassurance that he wasn’t going anywhere and it was so great to see this beautiful love between these two men blossom. I loved that this is a skateboarder romance because there is not very many of those and I loved that aspect of the story as well. This was a really great read and I will be on the lookout for more books by this author.
I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.
POV: 3rd Person
Standalone or series: Book 1 in the Mesa Boys series
Would I recommend it: 5 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ highly recommend!! 🤩
Is stalking ever a good idea? Max, saw Tanner at the skate park and was absolutely enchanted. He is a student interning and expecting to move back home after graduation. He thought Tanner, graceful. Tanner, worked as a Manager at a box store having worked since he was 14. Josh, is Max's best friend and serves as his rock. Carter, is Tanner's roommate & employee and recently they ventured into a personal relationship. He is confused and trying to figure out his sexuality. Carter, backs out of the relationship and Tanner moves out of the apartment. Max, needs to find a roommate due to a financial hickup. Tanner and Max end up as room mates. So many questions. So many secrets. How do you ask if one is part of the Community? Does Max let Tanner know about his stalking? What happens after graduation? I liked this story. I felt it dragged a bit in the beginning though. I had to keep reminding myself these guys are young. The series is good and it pays to read in order. Well done. Excellent cover art!
So I'm not sure what happened with this one, but it did NOT work for me. Don't get me wrong, I love this author and have read about 10 of her other books and LOVED them. This one.....not so much. Maybe it was because it was written in the third person which I HATE! Not sure.
The relationship moved WAAAAY TOO fast! Like insta love on crack! Omg....the whole thing was just too much too soon and didn't leave any time for character development or to develop their relationship within the book. The first 2/3 of the book was extremely choppy and felt like it was written as a high school creative writing class and the last 1/3 finally felt like the author's writing style I've read in other books! The characters were almost a little creepy! I didn't fall in love with any of them! Honestly, I couldn't wait for this book to END!
The other books in this series are also in third person so I'm hoping they're better than this one. Going to keep pushing through since I have confidence in this author and her writing! Fingers crossed! 🤞
Max a college student at ASU is in need of a roommate. When he gets a text about the extra room he’s renting out, he sets a day for the guy to take a look at it. When he opens the door there stands his crush Tanner/skaterboy. Tanner needs to move away from his roommate where things are now awkward. Tanner hooked up with his roommate and was falling in love with him but Carter wasn’t interested in a relationship. He told Tanner he wasn’t into all that gay stuff. When the door opens to the apartment Tanner is going to be looking at, there stands the most beautiful man Tanner had ever seen. Come to find out Max is Prius dude. Read what happens with Max and Tanner and how they both learn a lot from each other. I enjoyed this book. It was heartwarming at times, smutty for sure 😁, and decision and discussion to be made. Find out how they worked through it all.
Max was interested in the skater boy that he would go to the park to see every lunch hour that he could manage. But he could not bring himself to go introduce himself. Fate worked in his favor when Tanner needed to move from his apartment because of a roommate with benefits situation that turned sour for him. They become roommates - a bad investment situation forces Max to have to advertise for a roommate - and then friends and then more but this was a good thing for both of them. They make each other better people and their love for one another comes to ground them and they are both aware of what and who they want. I liked both Max and Tanner and really liked them together. Their story is a good start to this series. I received an ARC from the author for a voluntary review.
Max and Tanner Max has been watching the long haired guy at the skatepark for a while, almost obsessively. When his “skater boy” shows up at his door as a possible new roommate, Max is elated, afraid, and so ready to make Tanner his.
Instalove is definitely on the menu here. Their romance is fast, hot, and so sweet. Their backstories were filled in throughout the book. A bit of angst with them wondering about what the future will bring for them and the family drama was actually fairly low key and thoughtful.
The book kept my interest. I liked the characters and the storyline.
Review Copy requested and reviewed on behalf of OMGReads.
Really enjoyed this story of Max and Tanner. We get to watch Max go from being attracted to just what he sees of Tanner at the skate park and then getting the chance to have him as his roommate, get to know him and try to find a way to get him and Tanner to become more. I like the way he navigated all the obstacles Tanner put in his way, from his reluctance to get involved after his last boyfriend/roommate dumped him to issues with his family. The attempted return of the ex-boyfriend provided a nice bit of suspense as well. I enjoyed the differences in the two characters as Max was trying to finish college and Tanner was a skater, grocery store assistant manager and band member.
This book was pretty good. The writing could use a little polishing but hopefully that will work itself out as the author continues to write. I was a little surprised at how immature the characters seemed at times during the book, but had to keep reminding myself that they were supposed to be in their early 20’s. I haven’t gotten that vibe as strongly with some other books with similar settings, so like I said it took me by surprise. Tanner and Max are sweet together and it was nice to see them right from the beginning figuring out if and then how they wanted to be together. They seemed to have great chemistry as well, like they were very passionate about each other. Recommended!
This book broke my heart a little bit. Not in the relationship between Tanner and Max but in Tanner’s fears of being abandoned or left behind. And yes, those feelings are very real for people who have ever had something like that happen: it doesn’t matter how old you are/were or who it was. It was beautifully written and dealt with. This book was a good read. I was worried there for a bit about Carter, but it’s all good. I promise! These two recognize that they have found their person. Max can even be a romantic when he wants to be!
This was a sweet story with low angst and instant attraction. Max has been watching Tanner skate at a park for a while and has an instant attraction to him. He goes everyday to watch him, but can't bring himself to talk to him. Tanner needs to find a new place to live and when he shows up to see an apartment it's Max. They become friends even tho both want more, I loved watching the relationship grow and see them fall in love. They have some stuff to deal with and I thought it was written very well. It definitely kept me invested till the end.
Tanner and Max are such young sweethearts!! This book really took me back to my high school days with all the skateboarding and the guinea pig! Fond memories! It is Max who is crushing on Tanner from a far, but when Tanner needs a place to stay, he ends up at Max's door! Loved the sweet chemistry between these too even though they were so different! I was really pulling for Tanner because he was so insecure about Max leaving him! I received an ARC Of this book and if you love the roommate set up for a sweet romance this one is for you!
Absolutely worth the read. I loved Max and Tanner, their relationship was sweet and sexy. The Mexico trip was fantastic. It was heartbreaking how Tanner was always worried about losing those he cared about. Him and Max not communicating properly caused unnecessary stress, these were the moments I would get frustrated with them. I really liked Tanner's grandfather, and Max's family was wonderful, especially his sister. The ending was perfect for them, and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.
Super cute storyline with easily lovable characters. Honestly, not sure it’s possible to NOT like this story. Yes, there’s a bit of instalove here but not without some actual plot and character development. Their relationship did move pretty quickly from introduction to friendship to lovers, and it was sweet to read. If you’re looking for a good book with little to no angst, this would be the book to read! Don’t see where you could go wrong.

This was a great start to a new series. Max and Tanner really brought out the best in each other. Clearly from the beginning Max is more invested in the relationship. Tanner is coming out of a friends-with-benefits but felt like more with Carter. I did feel that it was odd how quickly Tanner got over Carter but then kept inviting him along to everything, even the trip to Mexico.
However, I really enjoyed this book and I am eager to see where book 2 goes with Carter.
This is the first book in a new series by Christie Gordan and I LOVED it! Wonderful story and amazing characters! This is Max and Tanner's story I found their story to be emotional, warm, engaging, steamy, romantic, funny, and a real page turner from the beginning until the very end. I'm so excited to read the next book in this series! I read an advanced copy of this book and this is my unbiased review!
This was a sweet story about two roommates falling in love. I liked the idea and story line, and I enjoyed the side characters as well. I had a difficult time with the writing though. I didn't feel that it flowed well, and I sometimes felt there were too many details that stretched things out further than they needed to. This made it a long read for me. The premise of the story and wanting to know what happened kept me reading.
