Three times the action. Three times the adventure. Th-three times the Brody.
Amir belongs to more than exotic and wild beasts. Alexa, Brody, and the growing colony will cause long-hidden RUPAC elements to rise from the darkness, culminating in a struggle to control the new world.
As the enemies of the Osay will find, the most dangerous animals on the planet are Reach and the Rangers. But as the aftermath settles, the colonists realize that sometimes finding answers just leads to more questions….
This book has a lot going on and it was kind of hard to follow, at least for me. We're back on Amir, the planet humans reached after what was supposed to be a forty year trip in stasis, but turned out to be something like 400 years. The colony ship Boone was one of three that was sent out by the USA (Americans) with two of them crash landing on the planet. They had not received any further support from Earth since it was just about to kill itself off in WWIII. So, for 400 years, the survivors did what they could to survive. They had some assets, one of which was an Android who went by then name of Brody. He's a little bit eccentric, but he is also a very good defense weapon and has kept the survivors alive all these past centuries.
Now that the Boone has landed, they have went about establishing the original settlement which was named Ohio. They met the survivors of the other colony ships, who have become known as the Osay, and together are trying to make a new life on Amir. The only problem is that the planet is far from peaceful. It has a native fauna population that is quite dangerous to humans. Then there is the RUPAC or Russian-Chinese Pacific Alliance. They also sent colony ships and they did meet the same fate as two of the American efforts except their two failed missions resulted in very desperate, starving soldiers roaming about the planet killing anything they met. The Osay have been able to fight them off, but they are just barely hanging on themselves. With the help of the Boone's people, they thought they had finished the RUPAC off on Amir.
That didn't happen. The RUPAC wasn't giving up on Amir so they had sent additional new forces to capture the planet and start harvesting its resources. The Ohio settlement is now ran by Captain Boas who was the head of the military contingent on the Boone. He wasn't supposed to be the leader of the colony. When the Boone did make it out of long trip, the found most of the civilians dead. That's all covered in previous books. There is one civilian that has kind of taken a leadership role from the Boone colonist and that would be Jared Reach. During stasis, he was modified by Dr. Roman where the military crew would automatic look to him for leadership. He didn't understand why since he was not in the military although he had been a former Marine. Dr. Boone also enhanced some of Reaches physical abilities so he was faster and stronger than most of the humans. This made Reach a very valuable asset to the Ohio community.
AS for the Osay, they are now learning a lot of new things. One of which is they have a new leader. She is the daughter of their former leader and her name is Liana. While she was officially elected by the Osay elders, everyone initially thought that Jared Reach would become the leader of both communities. That didn't happen and he's just as glad as it didn't. Once stipulation in placing Liana in her leadership position is that she and Jared would marry at some future point. Nether one really objected to that idea, but they weren't quite ready for that step yet.
Their main problem was fighting these RUPC forces. They seemed to have a lot of different locations from which they sent out soldiers. There was also one group that seemed to have been experimenting with controlling the native fauna. They also seemed to have created a monster known as a Bangor. This thing had terrorized the Osay for years and almost couldn't be killed. Reach and Brody are going to eliminate the last one or die trying. After that, they would concentrate on driving off the RUPAC if that was possible.
Then came the sudden revelation of a group of very highly skilled soldiers from the RUPAC that were called "Ghost". They had amazing technology that almost made them invisible. Reach and Brody came upon them only to find out that they didn't want to be enemies. They wanted to form an alliance with the Americas and help drive away the other RUPAC. Why they wanted to do this is part of the story you'll have to read about. The fight to rid Amir of the RUPAC contingent isn't going to be easy even though they did surrender. That's where things get confusing.
Lots of fighting and lots of leaning what Rangers are about. More to come in "Wayward Galaxy 4", now available for pre-order on Amazon. Supposed to be released on 20 Feb 2022.
This book was getting a bit too hard to follow. The action in it became very fragmented and difficult to invest in. It was good enough for me to risk on book 4, but I need to see the story come back, the characters develop more - or 5 and 6 will get left on the shelf.
Good book, however, the acronyms are getting harder to understand as they don't seem to have any description of what they refer to in the book. NOT GOOD when you are trying to understand what the people are trying to communicate while on radio/neural link. I know what OJT means because I did that when I was in the army myself, but the others in this book are very obtuse. Previous books at least put in what they were discussing, but not this time. I sort of had to take what they were saying on faith alone that it was somehow meaningful but it didn't tell me what they actually meant. VERY CONFUSING AND NOT COOL!
If the next book is going to be this way I will not order it or read it as it wasn't as enjoyable.
I love the premise of this series - a group of recognizably-current Americans have had to leave Earth in the wake of an all-out assault on the Homeland by Russo-Chinese forces, and (tremendous suspension of disbelief here, which is OK for SciFi) have traveled many light-years across the stars only to have traveled to a dangerous new home that the enemy has effectively already colonized.
There's a LOT of action. Sadly, it is ill-concieved and very poorly explained. The author has characters just randomly appearing all over the battle-space; the reader will struggle mightily to comprehend just what the hell is going on. Little is explained, and the bad guys are incomprehensibly competent for such a group of nincompoops.
I think the author, who has a real gift for building out entertaining and relatable characters, just gets lost trying to explain wide-ranging events that are all happening at the same time.
This particular book desperately needed an editor of greater skill. Numerous times as I was reading, I'd flip back and around to see if I could figure out how a character I was following was involved in a plot point. I finally got to such a state of exhaustion with this situation that I just plowed through to the end.
I won't be moving on in this series - there's a bunch of writers who have produced remarkable books that are better organized, but I am saddened about this, because the author has created some truly memorable and interesting characters that I would like to see evolve.
I cannot express how much I have enjoyed the Wayward Galaxy Series. As a 'mature' sci-fi fan, I appreciate the subtle and not so subtle references to the many ground-breaking books, TV & movies of this genre that pop-up from time to time. This series deals with serious issues that confront all of society. For example, how do we get along with people (beings) different from us? The struggles to survive in on a new world that has brought some of the same problems from earth is a constant challenge. The characters are very real and easy to like or at least relatable. If you haven't read the previous two book, I highly recommend that you do. Can hardly wait to see what will happen in book 4.
The third installment keeps up with Reach, the enhanced former Marine, Brody, the slightly off AI in an android killing machine ( no I am not talking about a phone), as Liana, the Osay leader and leader of of the new free world on Amir, a planet colonists were sent to when Earth went to crap.
Got that? And that's just the back story.
The action keeps coming in volume 3, After the setup and the Bangora issue, we have the confrontation with RusPac and the Ghosts, who may be working on both sides.
Got that? It would take a lot to explain the whole thing, suffice it to say it's entertaining and a great read. If you enjoy military scifi you will enjoy this. And good characters of you hadn't noticed....
The series continues the way is started with plenty of action in typical Abspach/Chaney fashion. My main contention is although true to SOP a lot of the acronyms and standard US/Ranger speak takes a while to figure out especially during hectic action scenes where trying to work out the full details loses the pace somewhat. The other is Brody is a great and fun character but the number of film references/ quotes is so many that im sure loads are missed but everyone gets a few due to the spread of topics and name drops. Still, the series is well written and interesting, so I shall keep an eye out for book 4
The authors clearly loves the Army, Army Rangers, military jargon and loving descriptions of battles; and those things are fine, in small doses. However, this book spends way too long on descriptions of the Army, Army Rangers, military jargon and battle descriptions. Of course, having read the first two books, I knew this; however, I assumed the author would pick things up in book three, but now, the book continued to obsessively describe military life, stereotypes and jargon. The large case of characters are poorly described and largely interchangeable. I think for me this book is the end of the series.
Reach and others encountered a band of Ghost RUPACs that appeared to be friendly, but do they have ulterior motives? They share their tech and hatch a plan to take over a base of vehicles and track Karta who escaped on their last attack. Liana has a crisis of ability as she self doubts that she is up to the challenge of leading. Reach goes undercover and Brody gets to kill commies! More fighting as the Osay and RUPAC square off again.. Graphic violence, detailed military attacks, suspense, double crosses, technical advances, pain weapons and mire all make this a fun tale as the stakes become bigger.
More B-b-brody, More Madame Osay & lots of Action.
Liana is learning on the job to be the Leader of the Free World of Amir; a world that hunts back. RUPAC is back; will they run to cryo or join the Osay? This book had more action than the last & we got to know the main characters better. I'm hoping this series keeps going, as I am absolutely enthralled. Great job.
The mystery of the three colony ships is gradually unraveling; the nature of the Rupac enemies and splinter groups are being defined but a lot is still unknown. Tremendous warfare and great military strategy involving rangers . Ossuary, androids, AI’s and dna altered alien creatures. A great story.
Brody is starting to get old. I like Jared Reach and I like Liana. I also like Captain Boas and Sherman, Dr. Roman and especially Alexa. So the characters are pretty enjoyable. But I'm tiring of this world. Life circumstances interfering? Maybe. My attention span is distracted? Possibly. But RC Bray just makes it so worth it and it is an interesting story. I'm continuing on to book 4.
Excellent read. The book has lots of twists and turns. If you enjoyed the first two you will love this books. A struggle to live on a new world is only amplified by threatened hostility for the past. Our heroes, Reach, Leona, the Rangers and the OSA are putto the test when they fins more of the enemy on the planet.
Boom, battle, shoot, something, description, boom, talking... wait... huh, where are they now, oh a hundred things happened mid confusing battle and your lost, okay, well first... boom, battle, shoot, something... ahhhhh not again... worst of the series so far. Not even sure I read it. Litteraly nothing of consequence, just a long battle scene, i think.
There has been no letdown in the fast paced story line, and the build-up has been maintained very well. I'd love to see more of Brody's dialogues as they are the best of the best, a great character with the kind of humour which makes you laugh out aloud.
This book is following in the terrific steps of the first two episodes. It was great picking up the characters as they continue their struggle against the RUPAC. Read the first two books in order and you will be caught up in this awesome adventure!
This series has had me at the edge of my seat, pumping my fist, grinding my teeth, tearing up and generally running the whole gambit of emotions that comes with reading a really good book or watching an epic movie. I am obviously hooked.
This series is like 70% battle, 20% explaining technology, and 10% character stuff. But I've read 3 of them now and I guess I have to keep going. The audiobook narrator is excellent. He makes the characters all sound different and he does all kinds of accents.
Reach, Liana & the Osay join forces with the Rangers in fighting off not only the expected RUPAC forces but also a new unexpected force. We of course continue to get craziness & movie quotes from Brody.
The authors have written a very interesting and engrossing Sci-Fi military action third book in this series. Very detailed military action with excellent descriptions and characters. Difficult to put this story series down!
Good realistic and informative action sequences, excellent characters, and warm emotional contexts. No simple formulaic star troopers here....and interesting AI notes.
Although the story line is good, these books are for the military minded. I had trouble keeping up with the acronyms and movie references even though I'm from the correct generation. The author seems up on his science and applied sciences but gets mired in the detail at times.
Meh, empty action without a lot of direction. Makes it hard to care. Seems the nooks were written to drop 80's movie quotes and talk about blowing stuff up.
Overall it's fine... but not the best work of either author
Another great book from the Anspach/Chaney team. It was even better this time around as I can go on straight to book 4 (wasn’t out when I read 1-3 the first time!) keep up the great work boys. Thank you!
Third book was a charm. The story continues and will not let you stop! Characters are are memorable and the story line is superb. Keep writing and I'll keep reading and enjoying!
