Forced into exile by Aspen’s past, Aspen and Charm have grown closer, but they can’t count on a future together until Aspen confronts the Hanging Scale. Her enemies will never leave her in peace.
To survive, Aspen and Charm will need both fighting prowess and trickery, and still it might not be enough. Vanquishing the Scale will require them to rely on the friends they’ve made in their travels, and most of all, to trust each other.
If they can take down an organization of violent mercenaries, then they’ll face their most difficult challenge yet—figuring out how to make a life together.
Errant, Volume Three is a single sapphic fantasy novella of approximately 27,000 words.
L.K. Fleet is the pen name for the trio of authors K.R. Collins, Felicia Davin, and Valentine Wheeler. They are longtime friends who share a love of fantasy settings and romance tropes. Errant, a series of sapphic fantasy novellas, is the first thing they have written together.
Aspen and Charm finally consumate their love, but it didn't really ring true to me. Their lack of communication beforehand and sudden leap into intimacy wasn't earned enough. There was too much push/pull in the previous installment for it to suddenly be no big deal now.
I didn't like the conclusion of this story as much as the first two novellas. Still, I'd recommend this series to anyone looking for a sapphic fantasy romp with a very episodic feel! ----- My misgivings with the third volume started with the sex scene at the beginning. It just really didn't do it for me, writing or timing wise, despite reading these novellas back to back. Honestly, the whole story felt a bit rushed in the end and heartfelt character moments were far and few between. I really wish there had been more time spent on getting to know the characters that were introduced at the end of the second book, as well as their place in the world. The high stakes fell completely flat, and there was simply no nuance in the denouement. I'm all for a happily ever after with a dash of uncertainty, but honestly, I was left dissatisfied with a lacklustre conclusion.
The final novella, and we finally get Aspen and Charm actually together! I like their interplay and how they both bring different strengths to their relationships and endeavors. I personally related a lot to how Aspen felt during intimacy and really enjoyed that. The storyline was good and allowed the characters to go their own way. I still wanted one more where Aspen did more than get a letter from her family in the Silverglade, though.
There's a hole in my life where this series used to be. I loved this story SO SO much. It's wholesome, sweet, tender, hopeful, and soul-nourishing. I don't know if I'm a fan of hardcore dark romance. This is what I find meaningful: Stories about people being good and kind and tender to one another. People who are messy and damaged but still try to do what's right.
My only complaint is that
Still, this book leaves me feeling both satisfied and inspired. This falls generally within the realm of what I want to write.
I know I'll be re-reading Errant again. And fortunately, I bought the paperback compendium that compiles all these novellas into one book... so it'll be easy for me to re-read it whenever I want!
Between a stoic warrior-woman and the flamboyant lead actress in a troupe of wandering players. Aspen is slow to trust (her best friend is her very smart horse) and in hiding from her former team in a vigilante organization that has turned from law-abiding to criminal. Charm is an irrepressible flirt and skilled pickpocket, as well as a well-rounded performing artist, but like Aspen, she compensates for a very painful past. The first two novellas feature their adventures (Aspen can't resist the urge to help a person in need, and Charm discovers she rather enjoys it too) in a continent with diverse elemental cultures--Earth humans, avian Sky-people, reptilian Fire-people (Aspen came from a reclusive Wood culture where the people have the traits of forest creatures). There is magic, but it is not concentrated, except among the Moon people who host Aspen and Charm in one of their adventures. The romance is very slooow burn, but Charm really is irresistible, and eventually Aspen gives in to her bliss. The third novella sees the final confrontation between Aspen (with new and old allies, incuding the theater troupe) and the vigilantes-gone-bad who have been chasing her throughout all three books. I really enjoyed the world-building, the easy dialogue and concise characterizations. This was a low-angst story, even when dangerous confrontations led to dire outcomes. I liked it that the authors very clearly conveyed the soul-sapping effect of killing, even in self-defense.
It's so hard to end a series, and this was done really well. Aspen and Charm finally get into a bed and past their hangups (ok, Aspen's too-chivalrous hangups).
The Enemy plot was wrapped up well, with some good fight scenes, and the resolution of how Aspen and Charm could be together felt natural.
Now I'm just waiting for more "The Adventures of Charm and Aspen" as an ongoing series. If not official, then fics welcome! :-)
