Superb writing! It was so easy to get into Azalea's head and feel the things happening around and to her in this first installment of The Shadow Atlas. There are many, many attractive aspects of this book:

- intricate worldbuilding: 8 different houses, two branches of magic, the Hollow, the gods and goddesses... I'm excited to meet more mages from different houses in the continuation of the series!
- dark academia magic vibes - it's the Harry Potter goes to uni story we all wished for
- Faraday the cat? LOVE
- the gallu demon is cool and creepy

I am a fan of hot messed up uncles, so I enjoyed the bits of pieces from Fabian's point of view, and really hope there is more in the next book :D

The hints of romances in this book are just beginning, and it's fun to see the various types of relationships Azalea has with the men around her: Isaac, Erik, and of course, Torin. I think I know who she will end up with, but I'm not quite sure AAAA.

In reading this book I had a feeling that I was in the good hands of an author who had thoroughly, in a very detailed manner, thought over every word, sentence, paragraph, and chapter. So even though there were some parts in the middle that I felt dragged on a bit, I was completely sure the author would be able to take the reader towards a solidly satisfying ending.

I can't wait to read more of Jenny's work!

I recieved an ARC through Booksirens and am leaving a voluntary review.

I thought this was an excellent start to the series! Diving into Azalea’s world, we really get to see her relationships with others and how she develops into her powers. The world building was excellent, but I do wish there was a bit of guide in the beginning. I felt it was hard to keep track of things at times but overall I understood everything in the end.

This book does switch POVs throughout the novel but I felt that it was done properly and didn’t feel too disjointed.

It really has everything you want in a fantasy novel, from magic to romance to creatures. It’s like modern day Harry Potter meets City of Bones, but make it college.

I’m excited to see where the rest of the series takes us!

This is an ARC review. All opinions are my own.

This was such an exciting read! The magic in this world was so unique; I’ve never read anything like it. It was definitely a complex system and I think Jenny Sandiford did a good job of taking us through it. I wished when I was reading that there had been some sort of prologue or some world building prior to the situation we are plunged into at the beginning of the book, but I do feel that the world building as the book progressed was very successful and established the setting and magic system well. Definitely an engaging read, and I loved reading about the dynamics between Azalea and some of the characters. I would have loved to dive more into the characters of Danni, Maiken, and Isaac, and I’m hoping we get to learn more about them in the sequel! I did love the way Azalea’s relationship with a certain Shadow Mage was developed throughout the book. Also, as someone from the US, I felt Sandiford did a great job of transporting me to London. Overall, this was an excellent debut and I am excited to see more from Jenny Sandiford!

**ARC PROVIDED FOR FREE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW**

This book is the perfect first installment for the series. I am in love with everything in it. From Azalea who is trying to learn how to use her powers to the magical book, trying to bring her father back, and the brooding love interest... the best kind of roller coaster.

I haven't enjoyed something like this in a while. The plot twists were right where they needed to be and you will not be able to put the book down.

To tell you that I screamed when I saw that Torin had povs is an understatement. Dual pov is the dream in an NA urban fantasy book.

I will not rest in peace until I know what happens next. Count me in for the next one. ;)

An exciting first volume with a complex universe full of magic and mysteries. Azalea is an endearing heroine even if she has this capacity to get into trouble. Her quest is honorable but doesn't go quite as planned. I loved discovering the different facets of magic in this world and I can't wait to go back...

A great NA read by Jenny Sandiford
Seriously, what’s not to love? Magic, monsters, a cryptic enchanted book, a hidden magical school, ghosts and blood lust, mixed in with a very special black cat, tricky student interactions, and a hunky, enigmatic mage.
Eighteen-year-old, Azalea Sharp, is a witch who has been denied her heritage. But Azalea is strong with Shadow Magic, and it’s growing. It’s the same Shadow Magic she inherited from her father who paid the ultimate price for his skill. When her magic becomes too much for her and evil pursues her, Azalea ends up at The Tower, a school of magic hidden in the Tower of London. Here, Azalea must find her way in a world she has not, up to now, been permitted to learn about. And let’s just say, her naivete not only causes her to make some bad decisions but she is also exploited by evil forces. Confused and alone, Azalea must navigate her way through danger and try to figure out who to trust. Or who to fall in love with…
Initiate has vibes of a university-level Harry Potter. The magic system is complex and tight. The dangers are real, and the world-building is superb!

Initiate (The Shadow Atlas #1) by Jenny Sandiford
This place was riddled with ancient scandals, dead kings and queens, and countless enemies and traitors that had never made it out. Death soaked into the very walls and earth. She could feel it.

I can’t wait to follow Azalea’s journey in Book #2!

My favorite books are thrillers. My jam is faced paced chapters, twists that make you shout, "Holy Sh&t!" and well written procedurals; hopefully with a ton of murder/mayhem/chaos involved. But I do love a good dystopian / scyfi/ urban fantasy and every 5-6 books love to throw one of those. Maybe because they are fantasy light? Over a epic high fantasy book which I have a hard time getting into. So I was thrilled to receive a early copy from a debut author: Jenny Sandiford and her urban fantasy book: Initiate.

Like a traditional urban fantasy this one takes place in modern day London. With people practicing magic unbeknownst by the common population. In the beginning we have eighteen year old Azalea trying to get rid of her "Shadow Magic" It's like the very taboo magic that nobody is suppose to practice. In doing so she gets a message from her dead father to learn how to control her magic. And with the help of her estranged uncle Fabian she finds herself in a community of mages learning how to work their magic right in the middle of London: Under The Tower of London to be exact.

And what follows is a total mind-melt of a urban fantasy. It's basically Harry Potter for adults and we have a epic world building scenario for the first 150-200 pages. But unlike Harry Potter with it's four houses and one magic type here we have eight houses with origins from the Gods and TWO types of magic. Literally Harry Potter on steroids. Like just when I'm patting myself for keeping up with the first round of magic, Jenny Sandiford throws that out and we start learning a new one. Like I kick total ass painting my fence and when I'm congratulating myself my wife goes, "You got both sides right?" Uh no.

This book is totally epic in scope. The world building and amount of characters are huge. But the magic of this book (no pun intended) is right at the half point where it just takes off. What I love in books is when they are just so organic and free flowing that you can't help but read it nonstop. This one has it...... You just have to get past the world building. Uhg. Ok, it wasn't that bad and I know most people who read urban fantasy will LOVE it.

When you do, OMG this is urban fantasy on steroids. (I know I said this twice) Building to a climax where Azalea and her classmates band together to face a creature in modern day London so horrible and evil that its actually terrifying to read. My scariest reads are reading about creatures (and humans) who kill so indiscriminately and without empathy. This book has one and its anarchy and chaos.

It's not a perfect book, however, IMO. Some of the characters are really underdeveloped. Mainly her classmates which she goes to battle with in the end. The main characters are outstanding. (Torin, Danni, and Fabian) But I think with the worldbuilding we go through in the beginning, the only way Sandiford could have developed them more would be to add 100 pages on already a 400 page book. Then we are really talking epic high fantasy. Also I love a kick ass female lead and Azalea was really too much "tea and biscuits" in the beginning. But make no mistake she throws that out the window in the end and kicks all types of ass.

Fortunately this book literally ends on about five plot points going into book two. And without the worldbuilding that we don't need going forward then book Two just promises to be pure adrenaline. Plus, I'm sure we are going to get a much better backstory and character development with her classmates. I was so entertained at the end of this one that when I got to the last page: Preorder Book two I bookmarked it.

So a highly recommended Urban Fantasy and I can't wait for book two.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This was a fantastic fantasy story with amazing imagery and outstanding world building. I was instantly swept up into a world filed with magic, darkness, monsters, demons, gods and goddesses. The story is intriguing, captivating and suspenseful.

Azalea takes us on a journey of self-discovery, with possible love interests and a strong determination to bring her father back from the dead. It kept me flipping the pages quickly to see what would happen with Azalea next.

I highly enjoyed this story. The writing was well done, the characters were complex and unique and the storyline was filled with twists and turns that kept me gripping my kindle tightly, not wanting to put it down.

I received an ARC copy and am leaving a review voluntarily.

This was a wonderful read. I found myself captivated by the world quite easily and the magic system was a pleasure to explore with the characters. Magical academy stories need a unique twist to them and this one certainly has that.

I enjoy the darker tone and seriousness given to the magic and threats. The author isn’t afraid to go dark and disturbing and we have a marvelous and driven heroine to follow.

If you want to see a story that explores all possibilities that a magical academy and hidden backstory entail, make this your next read.

This is a fab urban fantasy read that draws you into the exciting story filled with danger, secrets, forbidden magic and so much more. The world building is captivating as we enter this incredible magical world of mages set in modern day London. It’s exciting, it’s dark, it’s a little serious and yep it’s Harry Potter for adults. It’s an entertaining and unique storyline that grabs you from the start and does not let go as we follow our intriguing characters in this epic world and I am so ready for the next book!

This book is simply AWESOME !

It's the first in the Shadow Atlas series, a YA/NA crossover perfect for fans of Cassandra Clare.
Azalea is a smart heroine- not perfect, but that makes her even more likable. She was such a pleasant character to read about. The setting (the Tower of London!), the witty dialogues, the magic system with different magical houses and powers, and a superb plot twist... this book packs a punch!
I can't wait for Book 2.

An excellent debut novel from Jenny Sandiford -- you're transported to a nuanced, captivating world that is accessible. A real page turner - couldn't put it down once I started! If you like fantasy novels with magic, intrigue and a bit of (chaste) romance, you'll love it. I can't wait to see where the story goes next!

ARC kindly provided from the author/publisher via BookSirens for an honest review.
I grabbed this book last minute before I went to house sit for a week and was walking into a no internet, no tv kind of situation and the 4 books I was bringing with me didn’t seem adequate. So I grabbed this one not thinking much of it, it looks kind of like something I would enjoy but we will see kind of thing.

Azalea Sharp lives in a world where magic exists, but the general public is unaware. Her type of magic is looked down upon and her powers in particular are out of control. She must hide her identity and head to a school in London to try and learn control.
Also her dad is dead and wants her to revive him with necromancy.
And there’s a family Grimoire that you have to feed your blood.
A big scary monster on the loose.
Magical school.
The ever tiny flicker of romance.
GODS.

This book took me by surprise; I was not expecting to be as pulled into and invested in it as I thought I was going to end up being. The beginning was a little slow and felt a bit disjointed with the rest of the book, but once it found its footing it really took off! The author took their time building this intricate world, mythos, religion, and characters. So much so, it feels like there are a lot open ended plot points in regards to the greater series story that I can’t wait to read more about. I do wish the school/hospital/living grounds in the London Tower had been described a little more. I did at times find it hard to image where and how they were getting around. As someone not from there nor have visited I had to look up pictures on the internet and it just made it harder to envision how that ALL fit in and under there….at times it felt so maze like I was never able to truly feel like I had a good visual representation in my mind. A map would be nice…..

Generally I enjoyed the fast paced even telling of this novel, though there were times I found some funny disjointed points where I wasn’t sure if a week went by or a day. But it was usually quickly rectified or figured out later and never at any point ruined or took me out of the book. The same goes for the characters, there are a few spots where it seemed incredulous that the character didn’t figure that piece of information out ahead of time or keeps repeating the same mistake over and over. But honestly, it didn’t matter, the book kept moving without stumbling on it and I barely thought about it in the grand scheme of my enjoyment.
I look forward to the next one….one year is too long…

This book follows an eighteen-year-old girl, Azalea, in a world with magic. You watch as she tries to get rid of her Shadow Magic, which is seen as a bad thing in this world. She ends up at The Tower of London. Which is a community of mages learning how to use their magic.

I enjoyed the world-building in this book, which is unusual for me as I normally find it extremely boring. However, I think the author did an amazing job describing this world and the magic in it. I found myself being able to understand and enjoy this world quicker than I normally do with other fantasy books.

I loved the different types of magic you got and the gullu demons and honestly the overall vibe of the book. This world was truly original and so creative.

I also liked the possible love interests in this book. Normally I can pretty much guess who the main character is going to end up with but with this book, I have no clue.

My favourite character had to be Faraday. Yes, the cat. How could Faraday not be? Azaela was a close second.

The different points of view were also nice to have. I like when you get to see what other characters are thinking and feeling. I enjoyed seeing Fabian’s point of view the most.

Although there were times, especially in the middle of the book, where the story slightly slowed down a bit, the overall outcome was totally worth it.

Jenny Standiford must write quicker, as I cannot wait for the next instalment in this series. I would definitely recommend this book. I look forward to seeing what Jenny Standiford will do throughout her career.

Fun contemporary magic YA. If you are a fan of contemporary magic, magic school, spirts and ghost hunting then this book is for you.

The elemental based magic system was fun with some unique twists. I loved Faraday the cat side kick. There were some enemies to lovers/love triangle vibe, but no real love interest in book one, we will see in the sequel.

Overall a fun read and I'm looking forward to finding out what happens in the next book.

Thank you so much to The Next Step PR for sharing an advanced copy of Initiate with me.

I had such a fun time reading this, especially as someone who loved books like The Worst Witch growing up. It was fun to return to a "school" for magic but this time with an adult student. It was like returning to a familiar place that will always hold a special spot in my heart.

This is the first book in a series and there are certainly plenty of unanswered questions as this book comes to an end. Which I find really exciting because I feel like a lot of opening books tie things up a bit too neatly. And while the plot arc of this book is definitely completed, there is still lots more to dive into in upcoming novels.

Most importantly (in my opinion) the romance! It's fun to see the various types of relationships Azalea has with the men around her: Isaac, Erik, and of course, Torin!!!

I feel like the book could have been a bit tighter and I kind of cringed at how overtly British the slang was. To the point that it felt over done and made it obvious that the author isn't English.

But I loved the worldbuilding and I cannot wait to see what Azalea is up to in the second book.

New Adult is kind of new to me (I don't even know there's a genre called NA lol).
This book has interesting concept and characters and Torin is so kyoooootttt. I read the ARC version so of course it will need more editing, so I'm not complaining on that...

I loved the magic, characters, and overall story of this book, especially the twists to it! I enjoyed the magic and the ability to receive tattoos once your house was chosen and the more experience you gained with magic. As a small business owner myself, I really enjoyed the little details of our main character being a small business who fixes clocks. A few things I disliked though were this did take a lot from Harry Potter, even if it was subtle/made into a different concept. I also felt this book jumped around too much. It was hard to follow the story sometimes due to it as well as it would randomly jump POV from our main character to one chapter about her uncle and then later jump to one chapter about another character. Overall though, I really did enjoy this book and will be reading the second book in the series when it releases.

I received an ARC copy of the book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

The Shadow Atlas had quite a few turns within it and a very intricate magic system. A few questions were answered, and some where left unspoken. The MC spends quite a bit making choices that lead to events in the book, often not the right choice. But if it was the right choice, then there wouldn't be a book.

If YA/NA is your thing, you will likely enjoy it.

Magic was once a gift from the gods, now it's a well-kept secret in the heart of London.

Welcome to the world of "The Shadow Atlas", where magic, mages, and demons clash.

In Jenny Sandiford's debut novel, we meet Azalea, a young woman plagued by a shadow magic she cannot control and ghosts only she can see. Her plate was already full with her father's ghost seeking to return and a book demanding to be fed, but her troubles turn to chaos when the House of Ravens finds her. Now tasked with learning magic in the Tower of London, Azalea will have to keep a level head if she wants to survive. Especially now with a monster terrorizing the souls of the dead.

"Initiate" is the first novel of "The Shadow Atlas" series, and an intriguing introduction to this world within our own. The systems of magic are unique while understandable; they also don't fall prey to the archetypes normally associated with shadow and light. No one house is completely good or completely evil, and none are bound so tightly to their magic.

Azalea herself is a breath of fresh air. She makes mistakes, she rushes into situations without thinking, and her aptitude with magic is low. But she has heart, and will do anything for the safety of those she cares about. For that she reminds us of a strength we can find in ourselves, even without the magic.

Warnings: This novel did contain themes such as violence, mild language, and Death. Sandiford did not disregard the gravity of such scenes and handled those scenes in ways that were not gratuitous.

Whether you are starting the journey with "Initiate" or picking up where the mysterious Torin's story leaves off in "House of Ravens", Sandiford's work pulls you in and locks you into a thrilling maze of adventure and ruin. For fans of "Harry Potter" that grew up looking for magic (and still do), "The Shadow Atlas" series will feel both nostalgic and fresh. So find your preferred drink and favorite reading nook, because once you pick up Azalea and Torin's story, it will be hard to set down.

Note: I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Initiates is a program that trains beginners with the magic. Azalea joins in this program inorder to learn magic and bring her dad back from dead(Is it even possible🤔?) But house of snakes are not safe beacuse of house of ravens.
She manages to learn little magic and necromancy(which is illegal to perform) and tries to bring her dad back. Something goes wrong and Mage Dumont comes to the rescue. Whatever they both did had very large consequences after that.

Does she successfully brings her father back? What are the consequences of performing necromancy? Is she even able to do complex magic?

✨️ Seriously, I was afraid to read this book after reading first few chapters. It opens with Azalea and her mom in the woods in the night-time. Bonus point - Azalea can see spirits.
✨️ I was so freaked out because I mostly read e-books in the night time. I was like, come on you can not do this to me.
✨️ Progressing through the chapters, the story got so interesting. I took so many days and many breaks for reading first half. But second half - I finished just like that.
✨️ I really loved the plot and the characters are given their own importance and it felt perfect.
✨️ Her grandmother's name, RoRo, felt so cute. And I am guessing Torin(Mage Dumont) is the hot, shy, not so social and 'people are afraid of him' type guy but a sweetheart.
✨️ I got bored at few parts but overall it's good.
✨️ I am waiting to read the sequel for this book, Apprentice(The Shadow Atlas Book 2).

Do I recommend this book?
Hell Yeah. Fiction lovers, please give it a try, you will definitely love it.

What a stupendous book! This is my first time reading this author and I am in love! This book had my attention from word one and I was completely sucked in.

I love Azalea's mom and RoRo. They seem like fantastic people and to have a friend like Isaac? Oh man! I would be in heaven. No judgements, just acceptance and the way he cares about her and her family? Just wonderful.

All of the characters are so well fleshed out. I really didn't like Erik or Torren at first but they both grew on me. I am so hoping for a relationship between Torren and Azaela in the next book.

An original story, a very interesting premise. The whole thing just blew me away.

I would give this book a ten if I could.

More! I need more!

I absolutely recommend this book!!

I was offered an ARC and I am leaving a voluntary review.

Where do I start? This book has a Harry Potter feel but for the NA audience!!!! Imagine Harry and friends living their university days! Grown up enough to not engage in childish games but still on that road to finding oneself amidst a magical world that has yet to disclose all it's secrets, including who the characters really are, how they fit together, what future relationships could look like . The author did an excellent job of building the world and the magic system. Actions and suspense galore up till the end of this first installment. It was addictive to the point I read it in one sitting. My mind is already building up several scenarios for the second book. I can't wait to know more about it all.

A book with a lot of action, thriller and magic. The characters are very well done and the plot involves you, making you feel like as you is inside the book with the characters.

Spunky heroine shadowy past mysterious pet forbidden powers mortal feud. Not your typical academy read. Good cliffhanger. Book could have been edited better. Loads of info that didn't necessarily add to the story.
