Love in Wildes #1

Almost Maybes

Rate this book
Even at 36, Oleander Bowen has to do things she doesn’t enjoy to appease her grandmother: meet eligible bachelors who will definitely make terrible husbands, hide her sexuality and make excuses for working late. While Oleander hasn’t had to battle the patriarchy the way other Indian women have, she’s tired. She’s also tired of the boring one night stands and tired of working two jobs to pay back her parents.

Then he steps into her bar.

For Jackson Huxley, being 26 means living his best life, hanging out with his friends, nerding out over Star Wars and the Ninja Turtles. But also healing his broken heart. He’s never been the kind of guy that women want—too nerdy, not enough muscles and far more inclined to break out pop culture references every single time.

Then he met her.

Neither of them were looking for love, but persistence and charm not only gives Jackson a chance to be himself in a relationship, but also encourages Oleander to drop her walls and open up to something new.

Till his past, unacknowledged ignorance and one hurtful incident turns them inside out and suddenly all the perfect times they’ve shared shatters everything.

They almost had it all. And maybe they can get it back.

This is a really sweet contemporary romance with a plus size Indian American woman and the man 10 years younger that she falls in love with. Jackson is the ultimate cinnamon roll and worshipped Oleander in every way! They had great chemistry and swoon and are both dealing with some trauma from previous relationships.

Around the halfway point, the author's writing started to weaken. There was much more telling than showing, and some of the dialogue started to fall into the cheesy category. Which I hate to say because I thought the first half of this was super cute.

In the author's note she states explicitly the themes she's going to be working with and this book did have quite a lot of heavier moments dealing with fat phobia, homophobia, and racism.

I do feel like those themes were handled with care, but the third act conflict felt VERY forced and heavy handed and gave the book a didactic, teaching moment feel. I wish that had been incorporated in a more natural way instead of a sledgehammer approach.

I do think this author has a lot of talent and potential.

This is the first book in the Love In Wildes series. This book follows Oleander (a badass plus size bi Indian woman!) who works at a bar and one day bumps into Jackson (the cutest nerdy guy ❤️❤️). It’s a hilarious meet cute and starts our story. This is also an age gap romance. Oleander is 36, 10 years older than Jackson (26). I liked their age gap, it didn’t feel weird as I felt like their maturity level was the same and they are so cute!! Plus they have both had a history of bad relationships so you just can’t help but root for them.

I love these characters so much. Oleander especially. She is so confident and unapologetically herself. The characters and their relationship feel so real, which is often missed in some contemporary romances so it was very refreshing! Their interactions and story gave me the best warm fuzzy feelings. Plus the steam was very descriptive and well written 🥵. The cuteness and steam make for the perfect romance read. Plus throw in some nerdy Star Wars talk and it’s my perfect read. I could go on forever about how much I loved this book!

My favourite part of this book was seeing all the different dates they went on. It was so fluffy and fun. Also warning if you read this you will 10000% crave a milkshake.

If you are looking for a romance with excellent character rep, cuteness, humour and steam, I highly recommend picking this up. I loved their story and I can’t wait to read more from this series/author!

Also I’m obsessed with this cover! It’s so pretty!

I received this as an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

It's finally here!! My friend released a book into the world yesterday and I'm here to give you my take on it.

Almost Maybes by Anna P is the story of how plus sized, bisexual, brown Oleander and nerdy, lanky Jackson find their HEA.

Almost Maybes was a soft and sweet story that tugs at your heartstrings. Oleander, unlike the usual heroines, was more sassy than sweet. She was fiercely independent and confident with her body and her choices. She was flawed, scared and very much aware of her flaws. Jackson was an awkward cutie and the perfect sort of calm for Ollie.

I loved how gently persistent Jackson was in wooing Ollie. I loved how they were direct with each other throughout the story and how willing Jackson was to learn from his mistake and do better the next time.

The mentions of physical, emotional abuse, gaslighting, racism, homophobia and how it is often brushed off, were all handled with immense care. This book was an eye opening experience for me and I am forever grateful that I got to read it.

I can feel the love, effort and care that Anna has poured into this book and I cannot be more proud of her than I am at this moment. Other than being a talented author, she is also an amazing human being, friend and a supporter of other Indie authors such as herself.

Almost Maybes is a perfect debut novel with sweet characters, food trucks and milkshakes, some heavy topics and an epic wooing.
I am incredibly honored to have read an arc of this book.

Tropes:
~age gap (heroine is 36 and hero is 26)
~cinnamon roll hero
~fat rep
~bisexual rep
~nerdy hero AND nerdy heroine

This was a book that I grabbed on Kindle back when it was free so I decided to give it a try, and am I ever glad I did! I really enjoyed that we have an older heroine who is living life on her own terms, regardless of societal judgment (she's BIPOC, fat, bisexual, tattooed, and works as a bartender and dance instructor, the horror! lol). And our hero is immediately infatuated with her and worships the ground she walks on. There was also quite a bit of spice in this one to balance out the cute moments!

I will say that things get heavy with the third act conflict, as there's a side character who is horribly racist towards the heroine. I did appreciate how it ultimately played out, especially with how it caused the hero to need to take a look at his role in the conflict and become aware of dynamics he previously used his privilege to ignore. I will say that I was a bit surprised not only that the topic of race wasn't really discussed in their relationship until the conflict happened, but that the heroine also mentions how discussing it with the hero was a bit of a new experience for her since her and her best friend (who is White) never had to have conversations about race over the years due to her friend growing up around her family and understanding privilege and racism without needing to talk about it. I'm not saying that's incorrect for all friendships, and I'm far from an expert on this as a White woman, but it took me off guard to hear that about their friendship. I personally don't shy away from making space to discuss the topic of race and privilege with my BIPOC friends, and I think if I did shy away from it or we never brought up the topic then I'd worry that they didn't feel safe to discuss their experiences and frustrations with me. Which I'd think would ultimately hurt our friendship more than help. But that's just my own opinion/experience and the heroine's lack of ever really having these conversations with those close to her stuck out to me when reading this, especially since race was such a prominent topic in the last chunk of the book. But otherwise, this was a fantastic debut and I'll definitely be keeping the author on my radar!

I am a firm believer that every art work is a reflection of its creator. This book is proof of that. This masterpiece is magic, just like its author. Ollie and Jackson are as beautiful, inspiring and full of love and the hope that Anna irradiates everywhere. She's blessed the Romance community with the best reviews and incredible mood boards and now, she's brought us a romance filled with passion, true love, acceptance and understanding. I just wish my rating would be enough to give this book the credit it deserves.

"You said you like the way I look at you. How do I look at you?"

"Like you've seen a rainbow after days of darkness."

"You are a rainbow, Oleander. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise."

I've said it before and I say it again: There's no one (except for Anna, of course) that loves Ollie an Jackson more than I do. They made me swoon from the moment I read the 120K word first draft. But the way Anna shaped them and polished their already provoking personalities and intense chemistry and bond blew my mind in another dimension. The level of swoon you'll find in this pages combined with the hottest sexual tension will glue you to your Kindle.

I need to start talking about my beautiful Oleander by saying she's probably one of the sweetest, yet strongest heroines I've ever read. She has a heart of gold that's been scattered in the worst ways. I love how unapologetically her she is. A woman who takes no shit from anyone, who doesn't need anyone to give her the moon, because she's already taking on the world by herself. I love how real and proud she was of being who she was, even if some people wanted to fit her into a mold she was too good for. The way she embraced her bisexuality, her body, her career aspirations despite what the world wanted her to be and what society demanded of her is the most inspiring part of her. My heart broke for her. I wanted to transport myself inside the book to hold her and fight everyone that made her feel less than who she was. Despite the rocky start, I loved the way she slowly opened up to Jackson and gave him a chance without putting herself in second place of her own life. I understood her POV in every single situation she hesitated or felt insecure and made me swoon hard as she let herself trust Jackson more and more.

"You're my knight in shining armor." He whispered.

Oleander laughed. "Well, I'm definitely no damsel in distress."

Jackson is that hero you want in real life. The cinnamon roll hero who's shy, awkward and nerdy and doesn't feel worthy enough to deserve the woman of his dreams. This man! Aaahhh... He made me swoon so freaking hard with his adorableness and sweetness. From the moment he laid eyes on Ollie, he was a goner that did whatever he could to reassure her and let her know how wonderful and beautiful she was inside and out. I loved that he felt so comfortable and safe around Ollie to be vulnerable and share his insecurities and fears because even though she was hesitant at the beginning, he knew she was going to take care of him. I absolutely adored how Anna made him grow through the story and the awakening he experienced. I felt so proud of him as he allowed himself to accept his privilege and learn how to support and love Ollie the way she needed. He was simply book boyfriend goals!

"She might have been worried about dating him in the beginning, but Jackson proved he understood her in ways other partners hadn't."

Even with the struggles and the pain they had to endure to reach their happily ever after, their entire relationship was the sweetest freaking thing. A not so cute meet-cute, unexpected swoony encounters, heart melting dates, the most adorable geeky conversations and lip-bite worthy sexy times that made the book absolutely unputdownable! Anna wrote the perfect combination of sweet and hot with Ollie and Jackson. They were patient with each other, learned with and from each other and found the hope they thought they had lost with their past experiences.

The supporting cast didn't disappoint either! The group of friends that they formed with each other's friends is so fun and full of joy. I'm excited to see where this series goes and what more beautiful stories Anna has in store for us.

I go back to my initial comment: Anna is a magical human, therefore, her writing and her stories are 100% magic. Believe me, the joy and love of this story, the hope it brings to the Romance genre and the depth and heart of these characters is something you cannot miss. Give this book a chance, I promise you won't regret it

Anna, I love you. I have no words to express how immensely proud of you I am.

This story has more than you'd expect. Almost Maybes is the love story of swoony Jackson and tough as nails Oleander. Jackson is a cinammon roll sweetheart and Oleander is the heroine you root for always. As a brown kid, I could feel Oleander's insecurities as my own.

Oleander's strength is definitely hiding her sweet heart in the beginning but in no way is it a facade and the strength lasted beyond the shield of protecting her heart. She was passionate and no nonsense in every which way(iykyk😉) and inspirational without trying to be.
Jackson's perseverance and the whole plot twist with Oleander standing up for herself just gave me everything... Also the fact that they never gave up on each other, even in the time apart. He is a cinammon roll and not without faults.

This is a debut novel, and it reached far beyond what I was expectations. It reaches beyond the formula of a fluffy rom-com and is successful at it. The author managed the pace of story very well and kept me hooked from the very beginning. It is light and witty, and still focused on important issues. The characters are well fleshed and their behaviourisms hinted on the backgrounds they come from which ended up being such an important plot point which I didn't expect. The tiny details were so very thought out. If I had to be nitpicky and persnickety, I would say I wanted more of Frankie( which now I know will getting more of...soon!).

Also, the book made me so hungry and crave milkshakes!!
(Also ready to sign a petition to get a Niles love story.)

Lastly, Anna, Congratulations on your debut novel. It was wonderful and thank you for the arc, i cherished the story and can't wait to read more of your work!)

P.S. How freaking beautiful is the cover!!

I really, really enjoyed this debut! It hit my radar earlier this year when I saw the adorable cover reveal. It’s fun, tropey, delightfully queer & steamy, yet doesn’t shy away from real life hurdles.

I had been on the absolute verge of a bad reading slump when I recently decided to dive in and I’m so glad I did. Anna’s voice grabbed me immediately and I couldn’t put it down. It was just what I needed. The book is set in a fictional town in Delaware and starts with our heroine, Oleander (a 36yo South Asian woman) tending bar but secretly wishing to teach dance. She’s just kind of plodding through life with the ever present weight of familial expectations of marriage (arranged, if her grandmother has any say). She has the perfect meet-disaster with the hero Jackson, in said bar and rest…well, you know.

Here’s what you can expect:
-bisexual brown woman + white man, both cis
-fat heroine who loves her body (so does he)
-disability rep (anxiety/panic, PTSD)
-super sex positive
-age gap (she’s 10yrs older)
-“I better not fall in love with you”
-THEY ACTUALLY DATE EACH OTHER
-the sweetest cinnamon roll hero
-horny for milkshakes & TMNT
-“rolled up sleeves + forearm hair” 1-2 punch
-couples sex toy play
-FREE in KU

I also just have to touch on something I loved that you don’t see enough of, in interracial romance. And that is the white character doing their own heavy lifting, with regard to educating themselves on racism and their own white privilege. And seeing how a mixed couple wades through all of that and comes out stronger on the other side. That was well done.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Heat level: 🔥🔥🔥
Swoon factor: 💖💖💖💖💖

CW: Homophobia, fat shaming, racism & bigotry (challenged), gaslighting, past physical assault, past attempted sexual assault.

*The author and I follow each other on social media, but I borrowed this book from KU on my own

Almost Maybes 🥤
by Ana P.

Charming, geeky love for those warm and fuzzies! Definitely a feel-good debut.

Oleander is a strong heroine, with a hard exterior. Unapologetically herself in a world where plus size brown women aren’t always respected, she had a nice balance of tough and soft qualities. Many lighter romcom heroines are obnoxious but she was never annoying.

Jackson knows how to woo a girl, what a sweetheart. You definitely root for him to win her over right away from the MeetCute and he honestly works to better himself and confront his privilege. Although I don’t think I could look at a tattoo of a karate rat and think “sexy,” more power to Oleander for being into his Master Splinter ink. 😉

Bedroom scenes are honest, exploring intimacy after trauma and insecurity. Entire chapters are devoted to this component of their budding trust so don’t let the illustrated cover fool you. It gets SPICY!

There is a decade between them, Oleander being older but since they had common interests, it didn’t result in a generational dissonance. She also deals with some racism and lingering effects of a gaslighting relationship, but it doesn’t delve too deeply, keeping it lighter overall but still satisfying.

If I could capture this book in one word it would be HOPE. And hope is what draws readers to romance.

Jackson and Oleander are flawed and real. Swoony and strong, respectively. I loved the sensitive Jackson. More sensitive heroes in romance, please! I loved Oleander's conviction and dedication to her own path to happiness. I loved that she let him in. There were so many small details to fall in love with in this debut novel: TMNT references, endless milkshakes, sweet dates, a grand gesture to end all others.

Despite past harm and heartache, despite families in the way, despite bumps in the road, these characters leap for love and it is SO satisfying to see them land. Almost Maybes is a great debut novel from this avid romance reader! Excited for more from this author.

Almost Maybes is a special story and a fabulous one at that.

Oleander is probably one of the most confident, strongest and yet sweetest heroines I've ever read. Being so confident in your skin is something that I need to learn. She is unapologetically 'Oleander' and takes no shit from anyone. The way she embraced her body, her sexuality, her life goals are really inspiring.

From the outside, the story seems like a simple one but the main characters are what make this an amazing one. Especially that last part which turned the table for me. That was awesome the way it was handled.

Oleander, a 36 years old bisexual Indian-American working as a bartender in the evening and a dance teacher in the morning, meets Jackson in her bar. Jackson tries to woo her to go out with him but Anna is reluctant initially because of the age gap, and her brutal past. But eventually, after many awesome dates planned by Jackson, they commit to a relationship. But both have their past luggage and have to overcome that to be transparent with each other.

Two nerdy selves falling in love was probably the cutest thing to read. Jackson is the cinnamon roll hero who seems mature despite his age. But the way his character arc was developed towards the end of the story by Anna was super impressive. I didn't expect that tbh but I loved the way Jackson's awakening arc was written.

Also, this book will make you crave milkshakes! That was another of my favourite part of the book- seeing all the dates Jackson planned for Ollie.

The supporting cast of Jackson's and Oleander's friends was pretty great. Everyone needs that kind of support group. I can't wait to read their stories next.

If you are looking for a romance with representation, humour, fun, and steam, I highly recommend checking Almost Maybes. And also, support Indie authors :)

P.S. Isn't the cover so swoony?

Almost Maybes is a light-hearted romance novel that handles so many tough topics. Our protagonist Oleander is a hurricane of a character and as a plus size bisexual Indian American, the representation is handled very delicately! She meets a walking- talking symbol of privilege, Jackson, who is actually a sweetheart of a human. And watching them both grow is a real heartwarming experience. ♥️

I really liked this book!!

I loved Oleander and Jackson’s relationship and their banter back and forth with each other 😍 I love that they were both nerdy and quirky and they fit so well together. Also the food trucks?! 😍 so freaking cute!

It deals with body positivity, as Oleander is plus size and Jackson loves her just the way she is 😍 As a plus size woman myself, I really appreciated that part of the storyline.

Definitely check trigger warnings for this because there are some harder topics dealing with Oleander’s past relationships, and Jackson’s relationship with members of his family. I really liked how those conflicts were brought up and dealt with also. They were written very well!

I only took off a half of a star because I felt like the second half of the epilogue just kind of dropped off quick to end the story but I still loved this book so much!!

What a wonderful debut from Anna P!

Almost Maybes is the sweet and swoony story of a sassy, confident woman and a nerdy, sweetheart. Oleander, AKA Ollie, is a 36 year old Indian-American, bi, plus size woman who has had her fair share of heartbreak and less than healthy relationships. Jackson is the nerdy, cinnamon roll hero who was formally bullied but has grown to embrace his tall lanky build and love of things some would call nerdy. The two meet and an age gap romance ensues filled with adorable dates, the swooniest moments and some steamy ones too!

I loved these characters and their connection. I really enjoyed how upfront they were with each other, creating a strong bond and a dream worthy comfort with each other. I loved how self aware both characters were but especially Oleander. She was strong and confident, having learned from her past and knew what didn't want out of life. Jackson, while ten years younger, was also mature and open to learning from his mistakes, especially where Oleander is concerned.

Anna's writing was wonderful and I really enjoyed the flow of the story and how things unfolded. I was pulled in by her characters from the very start and absolutely adored this story!

Firstly huge congratulations to my little profiterole Anna P for releasing her DEBUT novel, how amazing is that???

Secondly, buy this book.
For a debut this book is fantastic, it's sweet, hopeful, steamy and contains an epic wooing.

Ollie is tough, beautiful and not afraid to call people on their shit but she's also incredibly vulnerable and Anna wrote her development beautifully.

Jackson too is extremely vulnerable and I wanted to gobble it all up. He's nerdy, cute AF and super swoony and determined to win Ollie over (and me) 🤣

You go on such a journey with these two, you'll meet the awesome side characters, the villains (spit) and read a lot about food and milkshakes so do not read on an empty stomach. I won't go into anymore detail as I don't want to spoil anything, you just need to trust me and read it.

On a personal note I got to read an early draft of this one and provide feedback and I'm amazed at the journey this book has taken in itself. Also it's kinda awesome when you see your name in the acknowledgements, in a super sobby way 😭💜

My fave quote:
"You said you like the way I look at you. How do I look at you?"
"Like you've seen a rainbow after days of darkness."

U.G.H
Anna my love, braf*ckingvo! 🥰

These are my own thoughts an opinions, thank you to the author for providing the ARC.

I am not a romance reading person but I loved reading this book. The characters are so real and their challenges so relatable.

Being fat and brown, I have had my fair share of remarks from family and society. Everything Oleander went through spoke to me so closely. And oh my lord, Jackson is the sweetest person ever.

Anna has done an outstanding job of writing her heart out and I could feel it throughout.

Loved it 💞

This book was good but I felt like their relationship progressed really quickly. It had me thinking “they’re together already? What’s the rest of the book?” The author also wants us to think these people are opposites but they both teach a sport to children (dance and karate), they both love Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and they were both sweeties. This book tried to do the grumpy/sunshine trope but Oleander wasn’t even grumpy past the first couple chapters. The ending got a little too preachy for me.

I really struggled to decide between a three and four but ultimately with the three. I did really like this book though and think I’m just perhaps a touch apart from the target audience!

Jackson and Ollie are likeable characters with a not too big group of friends who are both leaning into a relationship after meeting at the Barrel where Ollie bartends. Jackson and Ollie have some super hot moments 🔥 and there’s a lot of openness with regard to sexuality throughout the book.

The author also chooses to use a verbally abusive (and racist) attack as the aha or major uhoh moment which is really well conceived from start to finish so props to her for that.

I tried really hard to finish this book as it was an ARC from the author, however I just couldn't get into it. I made it about halfway and it felt more like a homework assignment than an enjoyable book. While I loved their dates and the getting to know each other/opening up, it was almost immediate. I felt like I wasn't really reading towards an end goal. They make a cute couple, but I just didn't think the book was for me.

DNF at 32%. I’m bored.

A lot of things to like about this book... but once again we have a heroine who wants a relationship but says she doesn't because she's been burned in the past. Why can't it be "I've been burned in the past and I want this... but you're going to have to show me it's worth it"? Rather than the "I'm just here to have a good time, not a relationship". Ugh.

It’s perfectly fine but I’m not drawn in.

A fact! I enjoyed this so very much. I loved Oleander. I loved Jackson. Bear with me for a second, I have so much love to share. I loved Frankie. I loved Mindy. I loved Milo. I loved Be.. No no hell no. I apologize; got carried away with my love declarations. This person should be left on a deserted island with oneself to keep company to contain all her evil to herself & not infect the world. She angered me extensively. Anna, I’ll be sending you my dentist bill for the damages to my teeth with all the grinding & clenching I did reading her rubbish thoughts.

The writing was smooth and simple. I enjoyed the gradual flow of the storyline. It started slowly with us getting the feel of the characters, knowing them better as separate, being invested in them, cheering them to come together, and witnessing all the emotional fluctuations in a true honest transparent relationship.

The way it tackled those harder & deeper topics and how these were embedded within Ollie and Jackson relationship was superbly done. Do check the trigger warnings here as it touches upon topics like abuse, racism, trauma, gaslighting, shaming & fatphobia. Unfortunately, all still endured in our current days.

Oleander, a complete sassy badass! Opinionated in a good way. Confident. Strong. Speaks her mind clearly. Knows what she wants. Cares less what others want. Vulnerable. Survivor. Warrior. She lives her life taking her own choices being with whomever and however SHE wants despite what others want and expect from her. Even her career aspiration, her say. Poetically inspiring.

Body positivity. I strongly believe this is a journey we are all embarking on with all being at different junctures of this journey’s path. At a certain point of time, we will all reach there on our own pace and time. Applaud those who have reached the final line & have accepted themselves fully as they wish, root for those that are still on the way, & support those who are struggling.

Jackson, my nerdy sweetheart. Adorable. Loving and lovable. Unselfish. Sympathetic. Understanding. His growth breakthrough was dealt with such care & understanding. Opened his eyes to issues he unintentionally did due to ignorance. He wasn’t afraid to admit and learn. Key word here! It’s not a shame to educate yourself at whatever age you are at. We all can learn more & improve ourselves to become better & human. We are all flawed somehow.

Their relationship was genuine with all its upbeat, smiles, flaws, pain, & struggle. It was amazing & fire when they connected & heart wrenching when they clashed. Reading about all the fun, flirting encounters, romance, the heart wooing dates they went on and these characters in general brought so much joy to my heart.

Now the juicy parts. The combination of the innocence and hotness elements of their relation was perfection. Scorching. Intense chemistry. Swoon worthy. Spicy. I was blushing, flushing, and fanning quite a lot. Red cheeks anyone 🤚🏻. Appreciated how comfortable, open, & quite vocal they were with each other in those scenes.

Excited for more from this author.
Can’t wait for Book #2

I read this almost exclusively while on the treadmill and it was such a fun book to look forward to every day! It was really sweet and a little spicy, but also just really solid in terms of romance. It would’ve been 5 stars if the pacing had been slightly better and there was just one scene later on that felt a little cringey to me, but otherwise I loved the characterization, I felt like the romantic dynamics really worked, and it was plenty spicy. I also really liked that there were conversations about the FMC’s size and race that felt really authentic and natural. Sometimes those type of scenes can feel a little hamfisted and like an infographic, but this author really made them make sense narratively. I would absolutely read anything else this author writes, and hopefully I’ll pick up another one of hers soon!

This was really sweet, and sometimes fell into cheesy territory. It was very cute while also touching on some heavy topics. I suggest reading the trigger warnings. Looking forward to reading more from this author!!

Sometimes you stumble across a book that surprises you in the very best of ways. Almost Maybes is one of those books.

Yes, it’s sexy. Yes, the pacing is phenomenal. Yes, the characters are engaging and smart and likeable. And yes, the relationship between Jackson and Oleander is phenomenal. Their banter, the adult conversations and communication, the fun dates, the age gap (she’s older!), he falls first (and SO hard)… it’s full of all of the things I love most about romance novels.

But this book is worth reading for more than that. Oleander is a plus-sized, Indian-American, bisexual lead, which means there are incredible conversations surrounding fatphobia, racism, and homophobia. Physical and emotional partner abuse, as well as gaslighting, are discussed throughout. Nothing is glossed over or simply mentioned once and forgotten about, and though it was hard and incredibly uncomfortable to read at times, that is why I believe this book is such an important addition to the genre. Romance can be light and swoony and sexy as hell, while also tackling difficult topics. I love that Anna did both, and with such care and respect.

I am so excited to read Frankie and Milo’s story next!

Please note: Anna provides content warnings (including chapters to skip, if needed) at the beginning of the book, so make sure to read that first and check in with yourself prior to proceeding.

I enjoyed everything about this book. Reading it was like eating my favorite dessert! Oleander (Ollie) is such a strong woman. She is comfortable with her body and doesn’t care if people do not like what they see. I think it’s great that a character emphasizes this because we all look different. Ollie was judged even because of her name and cultural background. This plays an important role in the story and the author did a great job in addressing racism and discrimination.

Jackson is an adorable book boyfriend. When she discussed her negative experiences in relationships and how it led her to develop defense mechanisms, he listened to her and was supportive. He initially seems shy and nerdy, but he is also brave and ambitious. He knew he wanted to be with Ollie and fought for her. He demonstrated that when you want something, you put your fears aside and go for it. I also really like that he enjoys romcom movies because it gave him hope to find his person!

We know both characters love each other, but they have their own identity outside of that. This is what makes the book even great; their love brings them together but they have their own interests/goals that makes them realistic. This book evokes beautiful emotions, and really captures that feeling of being in love. There are so many cute, romantic, and steamy moments that were perfect. Ollie and Jackson were both afraid of getting hurt, especially Ollie, but they both took a chance and it was so worth it. I can’t wait for the next book to revisit this lovely couple and see the development of another couple.

This book honestly has me speechless and definitely need a physical read. Ollie and Jackson were just sweet and just amazing. Before around the 80%, I was high on their story and just their feelings for each other. Beth GIRL…someone should have gotten physical with you. That scene was so overwhelming and just made me mad. Even the drive back and the conversation after was nerve-wreaking and I was filled so many other emotions. I’m happy how the writer handled it and the time separated was so needed. I enjoyed seeing Jackson grasping some idea of how Ollie must have felt, and where he went wrong. Also, I enjoyed Mindy telling that however Ollie chooses in their relationship, he must respect it. I did not really enjoy the grand declaration just because I don’t like them. The ideas in the grand declaration were so sweet though😭😭😭😭 Ollie and her grandmother at the end ❤️ love this book and I can’t wait to read the rest

Highly recommend!

Curvy bisexual brown woman and younger nerdy cute white guy? Um yes, please! Oleander and Jackson’s story starts deliciously slowly with lots of banter and sass as we learn why each has their own relationship hang-ups. But their pull toward each other is too strong to resist, and soon there’s wooing and milkshakes and cuteness aplenty. This sweet and sexy age-gap romance is sprinkled with things I love including band tees, TMNT, sex positivity … and did I mention milkshakes? ;) But like all good romance stories, there are bound to be issues. And though Jackson never even mentions Ollie’s brownness, others … well, not so much. And the way that played out? At first awkward and stunningly horrible. Then explosive. Then *gasp* growth and learning (by those who mattered, anyway). A masterful demonstration that racist behavior can’t be brushed under the rug, written off, or downplayed. All in all, this book was an impressive combination of refreshingly representative main characters, addressing discrimination of all kinds, and a truly heart-melting love story with a good helping of steam. Highly recommend!

My Rating : 4.5/5 🌟🌟🌟🌟✨

HOLY OMG I CAN'T...
Okay this book follows our two main characters : Oleander, our bisexual Fat MC queen with sass & Jackson, a shy Ninja turtle nerd with a persistent streak. It has a reverse age gap rep, plus size American-Indian MC, adorable kids with tutus, Milkshake dates, sexy times with lots of laughter, AND an epic grovelliinnggg scene to diiee for. And
.
First, let me say I absolutely love Jackson. He was thoughtful, shy yet confident and flawed in ways you want a character to be. Oleander was the depiction of Rose with thorns, and once you are in her inner circle, you are it. Oleander was one of my favorite characters ever okay?? She was confident, sassy, spoke her mind and wasn't shy about asking what she wanted. The dynamic between Ollie and Jackson was playful, sexy and kind of a slow burn and I was all for it !
.
“A date with you at a food truck festival.”“Should I pick you up?”“I’m still not sure you’re not a serial killer, so no.” Jackson snorted. “Do I get your number instead?”“That seems less dangerous, so yes.”
.
The author does a great job discussing emotional trauma with some quirky dialogues and fangirl moments, that it doesn't feel heavy. The side characters all made for an amazing gang. Frankie and Milo were amazing, and I absolutely loved the wooing that happened.
.
“You’re my knight in shining armor.” He whispered. Oleander laughed. “Well, I’m definitely no damsel in distress.”
.
The story and character development were gradual yet significant, that you don't realise you are gearing up for that ending. The discussion of racism, emotional trauma, abuse and culture shaming comes as a surprise (but not really), but the personalities of the MC's make it so they have to take a step back and resolve their issues. Like what?? The pacing was great the first half of the story, and when life happened, the characters have their issues. Now at this point, I wished we had a faster pace. The events leading to that misunderstanding was quick and I wanted it drawn out. (Or it might just be me.)
.
“Moral of the story, if we fuck up, we put the pieces back together.”“And we do it together.”“I really hope I’m not the one to fuck it all up.”
.
Even though I wanted to read more about Baby, Ollie's parents and family, it was a great discussion and conflict of interest. Overall, I'm so happy to have read this book, and the representation and the plot this book had will always be close to my heart!!
.
PICK THIS BOOK UP ONG THE CHARACTERS ARE ADORABLE ASDKFKFKBFJDDKD...
.
Anna, please include a scene elaborating Jackson eating dinner at Baby's place okay?? 🤣
.
